Damn... should've been a head coach.
The perks alone are better than upper middle class!
The ugly truth is often downvoted
That extra income will come in handy when the credit card bill for Christmas comes due in January.
One incentive he will never get is Big 10 COY.
I don't buy one goddam drop of gas in the state of Michigan!
Weave, you made me LOL.
Being the same age as Day, the competitor in me would do well not to compare success measured by $. Others moving up doesn’t push me down. I’m very happy for him. What an amazing accomplishment. He comes off as so humble and genuine and this come-up couldn’t happen to a better coach.
Damn... I went into the wrong career. Darn you Air Force!
Fighting the good fight in SEC country. "Our honor defend"
Let's Go BUCKEYES!!!!!
Thank you for your service !
Here. We. Go!
Gus, is that you?
Wise men speak because they have something to say; fools because they have to say something.
I bet his past, present, and future amounts do not include the title, championship, and bowl bonuses.
He should be able to pay the family bills!
Beat everyone, in every sport, all the time!!!
Plenty of dough left over for some great new assistants!
around 3mil less than what Urban was making, so definitely dough for assistants.
Depends on what Urban's payout contract is.
GO BUCKS!!! *ichigan sucks!!!
and $10,000 in Coca-Cola appearance payments.
Damn. That’s some lucrative work, holding a bottle of Coke at press conferences. Saban never even touches the bottle at his pressers.

He's not even eligible for this:
Big Ten coach of the year: $50,000
That should be a damn lotto ticket given his chances!
I would rather be on hand with 10 men then elsewhere with 10,000 - Timur Lenk
No doubt about that - 39 years since and Ohio state coach won the award Since that time:
- 25 other coaches have won the award, all 11 other schools have won the award at least twice, Kirk Ferentz won it 4 times, Joe Paterno won it 3 Names that won it twice Dantonio, Alverez, Mallory, Mackovic, Barnett, Moeller, Chryst. Guys I cant believe won it once - Brady Hoke, John Smith, Leon Burtnett (Purdue 1984 because no one know the name) Mike White (Illinois 1983) Ron Zook
What Ohio State coaches did but DID NOT WIN the award:
- 2 National Champion ships, 13 times in the top 5, 3 times ranked 2, 21 times in the top 10 and most importantly to the Big 10 coaches award, 16 time 1st in the Big 10
What about Bob Evans Breakfast Coach?!?!?
They have no life other than football 24/7/365. The last thing they need to worry about is silly ol' biills.
OH-IO living BACK IN COLUMBUS after 32 years in the ATL.
Like us average Joe's paying all those damn bills.
Urban Meyer left an incredible legacy. 12/4/18 Ryan Day begins his.
Sounds like you can order sex toys and bang assistants in the woody js
You had to go there?
I'd rather be an hour early than a minute late.
It was set up so nicely.
Aside from the money the university will pay to Coach Meyer going forward, will Day's salary provide a cost savings that they can use toward giving Larry Johnson a raise (as well as other assistants as necessary)?
Larry Johnson is the only defensive coach he should retain, other than LJ, there are way better defensive coaches that would give their left nut to coach at OSU. And get a new OL coach too.
Im sorry, why is the “left nut” always the donor in that phrase? What’s wrong with the right nut? Or the sack itself for that matter? #stopthehate
Or middle nut?
Damn it feels good to be a Buckeye
Dude, you need to get that looked at.....
I volunteer the "big nut"...
I love when our fan base does this.
we already have massive turnover due to so many highly productive seniors leaving along with Meyer going and the answer is to blow up the staff by firing 4 defensive coaches and an offensive coach at the same time.
all after going 12-1, ranked #6, demolishing our rival, winning the conference championship game by 3 TDs and going to the Rose Bowl and winning 27 of our last 31 games,,,but yeah lets blow up the entire staff
Bama and Saban are a full 2 wins better than us in the same number of games so instead of 27-4 they are 29-2
I'm not really defending the OP, but according to ESPN our Team Total Defense finished 93rd in the country. If you want to be a top 4 program in America, the defense has to get much better. I don't think we had a talent problem, so that leaves me with scheme.....
They hate us cuz they aint us!! ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I'm with you 100% JPF. The last thing a new, first-time, Head Coach needs is a bunch of new assistants.
"We gotta go win this next game and make the State of Ohio proud!"-UFM
Really depends on how he relates to those coaches and whether he has better options. But the default should be to retain as much of the staff as possible for recruiting.
What money will they be paying Urban going forward?
None. He stepped away from 38 mil
He will have some kind of pension contract to leave with. He isn't leaving with nothing.
And use of the private jet right? (Id press for that myself)
"I find your lack of kalua disturbing" - Darth Lebowski
I knew I should have gotten into football earlier in life. Now I'm stuck as a two-bit writer.
Here's hoping Day is worth every penny. I'm inclined to think he will be.
The only good thing about The Game is winning it - Urban Meyer
Hey, Crumb, what do you write?!
Another Two-Bit Writer
"Be a first rate version of yourself, not a second rate version of someone else." - Judy Garland
Can he recruit the elite players ?
He already has.
Hey Alexa, teach me to coach college football
College Football Playoff semi-final appearance: $250,000 (Day will not receive the bonus if Ohio State wins)
...huh? Why not?
EDIT: wait, I see now that he gets the Final bonus instead. But there's no bonus for winning the title game?
He'll never see the B1G Coach of the Year $. Cause Ohio State.
“Ain’t life grand when you finally hit it!” DLR
Was wondering to myself over the weekend if this should actually result in reimbursement to the university.
Why bother, a coach would be fired by then.
New Day for OSU. Same noon for TTUN.
It should be $50,000 per year, but the pot grows each year if the Ohio State coach doesn't win. So $2,000,000 for next season.
Is there no bonus for beating TTUN? That type of incentive might speed up the indoctrination process for coaches who aren't indigenous to Ohio.
East Division champ might cover it. But I agree with you, it couldn't hurt to be a little more direct with what matters.
Ahh, good point. Didn't think of it that way.
Is there no bonus for beating TTUN?
Yes. He gets to keep his job.
Urban's "new capacity" with the program is to ensure that Ohio State continues to dominate that team. Otherwise, he will be all over Day like a cyst in his brain.
Incentive is, lose a couple and you don’t worry about any.
No i don't like the idea. All the kids i knew growing up whose parents paid them money for good grades did horribly later on. You just need to KNOW how much it matters. It doesn't need extra motivation and that's how it should be
I'm in sales, so my entire career centers around performance-based incentives. When I get "good grades", my family eats steak and goes to Disney World.
Cool story!!! ~*WOW*~ good job :)
$1.25 million in apparel/shoe/equipment
I assume this is $1.25 million for wearing the apparel, not $1.25 million worth of shoes, shirts, and jackets, right?
Honey, we're gonna need a bigger closet!
The Nike deal usually includes a prescribed number of appearances at Nike camps and coaching clinics. I seem to remember there were two to three nationwide events that Tressel had to attend in the off season under his Nike deal.
LOL...they should make the B1G CoY bonus a million dollars or more.
Safest money ever
Coach Of The Year: a kagillionbagillionquadmillion dollars.
I know there's a game Saturday, and my ass will be there.
I Believe In Ohio State.
Guess Ohio State couldn't afford to send his whole family to the basketball games.
I don't think our offense is that far away from a pro style offense as it is. Day will continue to use the spread concepts its more about personnel than x & o's. As long as they keep adapting to the personnel the roster shouldn't be a problem. I think if anything Meyer proved that you have to have a capable passing attack to keep defenses from loading the box. We unfortunately just couldn't put a capable defense on the field at the same time our offense blossomed with Haskin's as QB. Losing Bosa really had an affect on the defense as a whole. With Bosa we probably cut down on a few big plays here and there. The back 7 definitely would of been more effective with a better pass rush. Just ask ttun fans how a pass rush helps your DB's, lol
MICHIGAN STILL SUCKS
He should get a “Just For Men” stipend - that black hair of his will become increasingly gray starting in September.
"Buclkle your chinstrap, we're gonna grind meat!" - Woody Hayes
Gillette needs to sign him up for a sponsorship to get that perpetuale 5 o clock shadow.
You win with people.
According to usa today coaches salary database, he will be the 17th highest paid head coach. Right below Ferentz and right above Dantonio.
Also to win the big ten coach of the year, all the other coaches will have to die simultaneously
The lord of brevity.
I wish I made enough money to discover it doesn't buy happiness.
Good to see the $1,200/mo car stipend. Otherwise, maybe a stretch in affording reliable transportation.
Interesting.. golf... wonder if he will upgrade to the real Scioto from Riverside....
“And in the night of death, hope sees a star and listening love hears the rustle of a wing.”
I'm jealous of Coach Day's hair. And his paycheck.
Fields of Dreams
Congratulations, Coach Day!
Here is part of my previous post:
I thought I heard a sigh of relief from Ann Arbor, and maybe from all of TUN state folks, after the Urban news, with the thought, "So, you're sayin' there's a chance?" But, then their hopes were quickly put to rest, as the story continued to unfold that YOU, Ryan Day, are taking over FOR GOOD.
I believe "Taps" would be the appropriate musical selection for TBDBITL trumpet players everywhere, saluting the Maize and Blue. Shall we pause for a moment of silence?
GO BUCKS---let the domination continue!
JI row end 78
I’ve never been to a basketball game so maybe if he doesn’t need those....
Imagine walking into work on a Tuesday and management says: hey, you are getting your bosses job and the pay is over 4x what you made last year. Crazy.
Bears...Buckeyes... Battlestar Galactica.
Happy for Coach Day, but with money comes expectations. He's not just holding the wheel while the ship's captain is away. He is the captain now, and now he has to run the whole ship.
It's not just the challenge of beating teams or recruiting, it's pleasing the donors, going on cancer cruises, running real life Wednesdays, overseeing the APR, being on television all of the time, radio shows, etc. etc.
I hope he is up to the task.
"We get paid to score touchdowns, not kick field goals"
-- Urban Meyer
I hope so, too. It's an entirely different world when you're "The Big Dog."
Right now. In some basement. There is a man working at a computer. Furiously creating the best gifs known to man. Creating a new catalog of masterpieces to bestow upon us. His timing? Impeccable. His talent? Unmatchable. His taste? Unimpeachable.
Who is this mad genius?
You know his name.
And I can't wait to see his work.
"five press box credentials"
"Coach of the year incentives". Urban's first job mentoring him should be to inform him that he coaches The Ohio State Buckeyes, and is therefore ineligible for the award.
They are for bribing the press to vote for him as COY. Clearly this is the new tactic that Gene is trying out.
"Day gets 12 football season tickets for home games, five press box credentials and a suite for family and friends."
Can anybody explain the press box credentials? What value do those have? Just wondering...seems odd.
I'd rather be a minute early than an hour early, 'cause I like to procrastinate.
GPA bonus over 3.5 lol!!!!
what are we recruiting: football players or nerdy scholars? This is a freaking joke and a sham. Shameful in fact
Should have paid him $2mil with a $2mil bonus for beating TTUN, $1mil bonus for winning 11 games, $100k bonus for winning a bowl, $500k bonus for CFP appearance and $1mil (and an extension) for a Natty.
That would double his salary immediately and gives him beaucoup incentives.
any fixed salary over USD1.0MM is crazy for a coach. make most of the comp be based on performance. Can't imagine any coach not being able to provide well for his family on a USD1.0MM fixed salary. There's enough objective KPIs to enable a pay-for-performance scheme. Set the performance yardsticks achievable, if you must, but hopefully the USD4.5MM is properly structured to reflect a performance based comp package.
don't get me wrong, HCs are very important, but Day has practically zero HC experience to justify a fixed salary of USD4.5MM. let's see his recruiting class rankings for a few seasons and on-field performance of his teams before the school start splashing the cash. it's only fair and if he's worth his salt, it shouldn't be a great demand. It's never too late to overpay.
This is Ohio State. the brand, the facilities, the history, the tradition, the fan base, the support, the boosters, and the fertile recruiting ground that is the state of Ohio.
like iv'e said before..obviously the BIG COY goes to at best a mediocre coach with a mediocre team that over achieves...so we better hope Day never gets that award...
He will need a razor contract I would hate to shave that beard he has.
