You earned it and deserved it, Coach.
"The only good thing about it is winning the d*** thing" - Urban Meyer on The Game The War
Did I miss it or didn't anyone ask about a timeline to consider any changes in the coaching staff?
Day said everyone will be evaluated after the bowl game.
He said they're all out recruiting right now but no news till after the bowl
And one step further, Speilman said today on the radio that a source told him tOSU will be moving to a “pro-style offense”, so....transfers on the horizon?
"Three things can happen when you pass the ball, and two of them are bad." - Woody
Is this fake news? Are you messing with me?
Not at all. Was listening this morning to him and Hooley on 105.7. He actually got a text while speaking on air, came back on and made the pro-style comment. Said it was a source very close to him and one he trusts, typically accurate.
This is very interesting. Hopefully he is thinking of a Patriots/chiefs pro style offense not a Harbaugh disaster.
We were pro-style this year.
They're all chickens. The rooster has sex with all of them.
Maybe. For the most part. But 7 is leaving. Tate v Baldwin...[a kid recruited by Day btw]
Day said he wants to throw it all over the field. Good news for Baldwin if true.
Yep. Thought of him first this morning.
Although Martell does not have Haskins' uber elite "arm talent," he's already shown that he can throw it all over the field. We've heard good things about Baldwin, but haven't seen him throw in a game/exhibition yet. If Haskins leaves, they'll have an open competition at QB. I have no reason to suspect that Day's offense will better or worse news for Martell, Baldwin, or other potential OSU starting QBs.
Dwayne gone. Top ten pick. I’m glad we had him for the time we did but he gone.
I agree. The only expectations I have for the successor to Dwayne is that there will be a large bloc of fans that will troll his every mistake.
Never place a bet on anything that can talk.
I have to figure Martell will transfer. A pro style offense is not a good fit for his strengths.
"In America, anyone can become president. That's the problem." George Carlin
Aleyard: I realize that you said "figure," but this is another thing that you cannot possibly know.
First off, it's just a rumor that Day will run a "pro style offense."
Secondly, what does that even mean in the year 2018? A lot of NFL teams are using RPOs and "college" concepts as part of their "pro style" offenses these days? Is the mobile Russell Wilson not running a pro-style offense?
Thirdly, even if Day were to deploy a more traditional pro style offense - which I doubt will happen - how do you know that Martell won't excel at running it? He threw for a ton of yards in h.s. He might be a bit on the shorter side, so is Drew Brees.
Well fwiw, Speilman also said the games Urban was suspended for, nobody in the locker room was worried about. or saying “we gotta get Tate in”. It wasn’t until Urban came back that there was a push for Tate. Personally I could see Day favoring Baldwin. Day was his main recruiter.
I’m giving my opinion on what I think will happen, same as everyone else on here.
I am sure that Tate wants to play QB in the NFL. He will not transfer because of the style of offense, unless its a bad offense. I think he would transfer if somebody (Baldwin) beats him out, because he absolutely wants to play. But he won't shy from the challenge of leading Day's offense, and Day will give him a shot. He's a competitor.
With the kids we are bringing in for 2019, 2020 we were already heading down this path. Day and Wilson glowed about Baldwin earlier this year.
I'd LOVE!!!!! to know Baldwin's health status. Because getting him some snaps in the Rose bowl could be huge and it won't burn a redshirt...
With the way they call pass interference on every play now why not?!
Day said he feels really good about the offenses’ capacity to adapt from year to year to the strengths of their talent. He cited JTB to Haskins as the example. Same offensive philosophy but different talent/styles at QB.
I think Tate would be very much like Kyler Murray on offense under Day. Tate is a better passer than JTB. But Baldwin and the rest Day has recruited are more true pass first guys.
You win with people.
And so forth...
9 Units Strong!
From the article:
Day said Ohio State's other assistant coaches are still on the road recruiting, and that's the focus right now. At the end of the season, he'll go through and evaluate things and make decisions on which staff members will be retained.

Damn, what a run. Let’s do it again.
I can handle another 7-0.
Go Bucks. Thank you Urban, and lets get after it Coach Day. One more time on Jan 1st Urban!
Good luck coach. Vaya con dios

Man, what a bittersweet day. Sweet because it's been an amazing 7 years with one of the best ever; bitter because it's going to be sad to never see the Urban Meyer double fist pump on the sidelines again. I love the Day hires though, and believe he will succeed here. Still just hard to process everything.
We can't stop here; this is bat country...
Was very impressed with Day's statement and his responses. I think we're in good hands.
Well change happens no matter what. We have to embrace it. Personally, I’m excited for the [Day] future.
I like that Gene Smith said
You still need to win football games
To Coach Day.
Thank you for everything Coach!
Fields of Dreams
"It didn't take long for me to figure out what the expectations are for Ohio State football. No. 1, win the rivalry game, and No. 2, win every game after that."
For those concerned he didn't 'understand' the rivalry, you can rest easy.
New No 3. Don't lose to Purdue
Head north till you smell it, west until you step in it
Or anyone else, according to " No. 2, win every game after that.""
I'd settle for tieing BYE the week after Penn State
For those of you who were concerned, Ryan Day more than understands the rivalry.
I don't give a damn for the whole state of Xichigan.
I gotta say I'm not as sad as I thought I would be about this day. Obviously it sucks seeing Urban go but knowing that he will continue to be around OSU constantly is very reassuring. And Day carries himself quite well and without a lot of charisma. I hope he continues what Meyer started and then some in the years to come. Go Bucks!
Ryan Day has an incredible standard to follow. Tough shoes to fill and I certainly hope he's ready. The last two years of ups and downs have given him a pretty clear view of what's expected. I really hoped we could have Urban for a couple more years, but I like what I'm hearing from Ryan. The quote about winning the rivalry game and every game after that shows he has a pretty good idea of what it's about.
I have been left very, very confident following this presser.
"To Buckeye Nation: You have my word that I'm going to give everything I have to continue the tradition of excellence and winning that this program has enjoyed during its storied history."
I think this is a guy that knows what he now has his hands on... Hope Urban will be a phone call away to bounce things off as well. Urbz would be a hell of a consultant.
Reading these remarks from the coaches, they are definitely doing recruiting during the press conference as well. Always recruiting lol. Putting all the great things about what Ohio State can do for student athletes out there.
Why weren't any of the reporters bright enough to ask Day:
"You've known you had the job for 24hr or so...what have you done to help you beat TTUN since then?"
Coach speak at the highest level of the art form, yet the statements made during the presser seemed to be genuine and heartfelt.
Too much time spent at the North Heidelberg rather than the classroom. SSD 68-72
It's another reminder of how fortunate we are to be Buckeyes. The next man up is on the staff and already got a taste of the gig earlier this year. You retain the key off the field folks, tweak the coaches and the train keeps on rolling. Seriously, it's just such a gift. Think about Michigan. If Harbaugh left or was fired they don't have a next man up. They'd have to reboot the whole thing once again and a new outside coach almost always equals staff overhaul...
As always... it's great to be a Buckeye...
Day absolutely killed it. Very good introduction as the new head coach, it gave me a lot of faith and I feel good about the hire right now.
Urban Meyer left an incredible legacy. 12/4/18 Ryan Day begins his.
What’s even funnier it hit me that the weasels prolly think we’re all “the Sky is falling”. Yet we are genuinely excited for Day. Meanwhile, ttun has had their guy for how long now...and still.
Go Bucks! Go Coach Day!
He has to keep LJ!!!! Has to
i still cant believe it
I had sincerely hoped this day would NOT come so soon. MUCH love to Urban FRANK Meyer. May God bless
Why the hell do I have to keep seeing Wint give up big plays? Is our defensive coaches fucking blind???
Where was Drake at???? Don’t get me wrong, glad he wasn’t up there.
Drake's job is Urban's next job. If Tressel can be president of an Ohio state university, why can't Urban be the president of THE Ohio State University?
"The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing." - Edmund Burke
IB--I like how you think...
AD is not a low stress job. I don’t think that will be an option. Edit. I misread your post. President is definitely not a low stress job either. Pure politics and not likely either.
Our people are everywhere, Esto Dignus.
You did notice that my post was in italics, right?
Who would DV this question, aside from Michael Drake?
Glad he wasn't there as well. Very telling.
Thank you Urban Meyer and Gene Smith
It's not telling, because the football program is just one very minor aspect of Drake's job. Gene's the more relevant figure for this kind of presser. Doesn't mean a thing
I feel great about the hire. Totally understand not going out on a national search for a big name coach who built another program. For one, that coach would bring and establish his culture, his work ethic, his traditions and practices. I like the idea of Day being passed the torch and continuing something that an outsider would try to fix or replace but is not at all broken.
Whats more, what would we be looking for in this national search ? Perhaps a proven winner, but any proven winner we get would be a guy who didn’t do it as well as Urban. Maybe a young, up and coming coach? Someone like Matt Campbell? He is a very good coach, but I think we saw that Day has all that we would find attractive in Campbell. As others have said, we would want a young rising star in the game, hungry to chase titles. We have that in Day.
"Woody would have wanted it that way"
Anyone else get the impression that they started working on this plan much earlier? Like maybe Day knew those 3 games were his audition for the HC gig in 2019 and moving forward, and Meyer suggested it? Feels like Meyer felt screwed over by the administration, and with his health issues, just decided this wasn’t worth it anymore? Then you set up this presser, and overcompensate him for whatever role he’ll have as a settlement of his buyout of sorts? Right or wrong, this feels like Drake and others basically forcing him out a year or two before he really wanted to leave.
I don’t know, but something about Meyer’s demeanor, and the press conference as a whole, just felt off to me.
"Always bear in mind that your own resolution to succeed, is more important than any other one thing." - Abraham Lincoln
Sounded like Meyer has been having these issues to varying degrees the whole time he was at OSU, or nearly so. Sounded like they have gotten worse recently and that is one reason he wanted Day around. Although it also sounded like he was not really confident of his choice until yesterday morning or Sunday night for sure.
I mean I'm probably reading too much into it, but it just seemed weird for a coach who's stepping down. Maybe they should have just waited until after the Bowl to do this? I don't know, but I guess his actual farewell presser will be the Rose Bowl postgame. yet another reason that I hope they win.
That's a fair question.
If the Buckeyes had made the playoffs I don't think this announcement would have happened this early.
But given my secret power of 20:20 hindsight, the writing was on the wall. Urban was having headaches. The team needs to be overhauled next year. All veteran receivers gone. 3/5 of the offensive line gone. A major shakeup across the board with the defense is needed. Urban is past the point of rebuilding again, he already rebuilt us.
With one game left this gives time to comfort the players and recruits, and hopefully we'll put a beatdown on Washington.
"We get paid to score touchdowns, not kick field goals"
-- Urban Meyer
Meyer said the decision to not wait until after the bowl game was based, in part, on the early signing period. He wanted the recruits to have the real story before signing. Class act as always!
"If you're going through Hell, keep going." Sir Winston
I think they want to have a smooth transition on the recruiting front.
Hopefully Meyer gets his health in order and they’re able to find a meaningful role within the program/athletic department for him and he sticks around for a few decades. He gets a lot of shit for supposed character flaws (the “too loyal” one might be accurate), but it’s pretty evident to those that are actually paying attention his impact on the culture of the program has been nothing short of amazing. I’d hate to see that influence leave.
I'll say it, if its not on the minds of others, pretty damn excited to see what Day can do. The guy has the "it" factor. Go Bucks.
It doesn't matter whether you're the lion or a gazelle-when the sun comes up, you'd better be running.
Every coach who ever put a whistle around their neck strives to be the head football coach at Ohio State University ... being on the same list as Paul Brown, Woody Hayes, Earle Bruce, John Cooper, Jim Tressel and Urban Meyer, it's extremely humbling, but I'm prepared for the challenge
Poor Luke Fickell.
"¯\_(ツ)_/¯" - Joey Bosa
For what its worth I don't think Fick was ever one of Urbans guys, even after the great job he did with those teams.
I feel like the successor would be hand picked, unless Urban was flat out fired. In this case, I don't think Fick was ever in the convo.
Nah, it's not a slam on Luke Fickell, we just all agreed to pretend the 2011 season never happened.
Luke's year was rough. But Luke did hold the team together. They never acted out and never misrepresented the university on or off the field despite the losses. Can't remember specifically which game, but one of Luke's players had an unsportsmanlike personal foul type call, and on the way to the sideline, Luke grabs the kid by his collar and lets him know his displeasure. Didn't see that problem reoccur throughout the rest of the season.
Dan Hope had the best questions of any of the reporters on site today. He asked what I wanted to know and what is really important here. Thanks Dan
I Wish Urban good health and a great Future. What a wise choice to step away now before the worst happens.
#HireDay - We are behind you Coach Day!
Boy, I got vision and the rest of the world wears bifocals! - Butch Cassidy
Meyer said he wants to continue to have a role at Ohio State: "God has a plan. I'm not quite sure what that is ... I hope to stay involved."
Urban Frank Meyer, 16th President of Ohio State University.
Heh, heh, I hope Urbs can fit The Vest in somewhere. ;) Damn, I'm down. I was fortunate to be at Jerry's World to watch Urban and The Buckeyes defeat the ducks in 2015 to win it all. I really thought Urban would have at least one more championship with The Buckeyes before he rode off into the sunset. I'm glad to I got to witness in person the one he did get for The University. You only go around once.
Wow, what a roller coaster year. Down, up, down, up, up, down... I hope Day's selection is a big up ride. Best wishes to Urban.
The 2017 and 2018 classes were, combined, the best classes in the country. They are in their 2nd and 3rd year in the program next year. Day has all of the horses he needs to win big, right out of the gate.
Also... if Day beats Harbaugh the next two years, I think that will be end of the road for Jimbo.
"I don't think you necessarily have to get a trophy to be a winner." - Nick Saban 1/2/15.
Urbs left Day a pretty good hand to play. I do expect to see Day make some significant coaching changes, especially on the D, though. Still, Day has some very, very big shoes to fill. I hope he can handle it, including keeping the recruiting looking good, especially since he's up against the likes of Saban and Dabo.
and the next two years schedule seems to be able Coach Day to do just that
This presser makes me wanna go back to 2012 and watch our first game vs Miami Oh all the way through the 2018 B1G championship. This has been 7 years of football bliss, THANK YOU COACH MEYER
regarding the godfather of soul's observation that the presser felt odd...what did Gene mean he "was going to make a move one way or another'??
I think he meant a definitive statement that Urban was here long term or he was stepping down.
"You can never pay back, but you can always pay forward."
A minor side note . . . did anyone else get the vibe that Coach Meyer does not like Doug Lesmerises?
Wasn't he one of the few reporters he talked to earlier this year about his health?
i picked up on that
Maybe we knew it was coming, It is still an emotional time for Buckeye Nation...
From all his interviews and his demeanor i think day is one of the normal guys in the profession. I know that sounds strange but, most current big time head coaches seem way too knotted up.
Dear Coach Day
Recruit the best players and best coaches and everything will take care of itself.
And remeber these two words:
Hate to be Jim Smith right about now. He's the guy who took over for Archie in 2016. CEO of the Alumni Association like Archie was is like the no-brainer transition for Urban.
Buckle in folks- going to be an interesting year!!! Change always brings some uncertainties, and time will tell what they are.
Hope Coach Meyer enjoys retirement- and thanks for all the great years!!!
Enjoying daily the 62-39 ttun beatdown.
"I look forward to working with Urban in his new capacity," but he did not specify what that capacity is.
Maybe Director of Recruiting and his first order of business is one Zach Harrison... STAT!!
"Defiance in Silence"
Woody, Earle, Cooper, Tressel, Urban: 65+ years of HOF coaches. Our honor defend Coach Day!!!! Go Bucks!!!
Day says that whatever role Meyer wants to have in the program, "the door will always be open." "Coach Meyer is always going to be a resource for me, personally."
The Coach is dead...
Long live the Coach!!
Welcome, Coach Day.
I'm confused. Urban didn't explicitly state why he was stepping down. I know he sort of cited health concerns but he didn't explicitly say that was why. I have a bad feeling he is going to be the head coach elsewhere in a couple years. I can't be mad at him because he ultimately won us a natty and went 7-0 against the bad guys. Hope he gets his health under control and am excited to see what the future holds for Buckeye Nation.
stop worrying about it. his decision is his decision and not everyone has the right to know about his personal life. If he chooses to coach again, so be it. don't be mad
Ok. Will do. I guess I just wish he was a Buckeye for lifer. Oh well.
I like it. I'm sad because its over but I get it. Meyer did not (and may not) lose 10 games in his time here. Chew on that. Thank you coach.
Ryan Day is also going to eff some people up, badly. I hate that Meyer is leaving but love that Day is in the saddle.
Now go out and kick Michigan's ass again.
Proudly dispensing unbridled arrogance since 1983.
Urban cares about Ohio State - there's no way he'd be pushing for Ryan Day to be the new coach if he didn't think he was the right guy for the job. With that said, impressed with Day (that Michigan game plan was a master class). I am 34 years old - I can't imagine being head coach of Ohio State football just a few years older than I am now.
Not a bad man for Coach Day to have on speed dial to help. G.O.A.T.
i honestly feared this day but knew it would come. How blessed were we to have UFM as HC.
Day having his blessing makes me feel 100% confident this program is in good hands. Day is hungry, talented, young, and ready to prove he’s the right man for the job.
Round on the ends and "HI" in the middle. O-HI-O.
Maybe "Taps" would also be appropriate for the Huskies. Good luck UW, and Coach Peterson, if you thought you had a decent chance against the Buckeyes, after watching the Purdue fiasco.
I seem to remember OSU Coach (Fedora-donned), who though went out in a less honorable way, lead his 5-4-1 Buckeyes over the 8-3 Wolvies in Ann Arbor. Oh, that's right- another year TTUN was favored, AND LOST.
I'm sure the players will want to send this Coach off the right way. Peterson-if Dwayne is set free-GOOD LUCK TO YOU Pac 12-ver's!

happy birthday Troy
Anyone else feel Gene’s statement that he was going to make a decision one way or the other strange? Made it sound like he was forcing Urban out ??? Or am I reading to much into that. I tend to do that all the time.
