I tell ya one thing is for sure, if he changes his mind, I'm not gonna be a UF fan and hate him for no good reason. Thanks, coach! You killed it here!

Exactly. I wouldn't have cared if all he did was beat TTUN, but he gave us a national title and single digit losses over 7 years. He's done more than enough to take his place among our legends as he deserves. Next up, it's time for the university to welcome Tressel back and acknowledge his accomplishments as well.

Your claim will be tested I believe.

Maybe not soon.

Winning is one of the expected outcomes of continuous mastery of his craft. I believe only death can keep the likes of UFM from pursuit of perfection. There is no other recourse for what drives him.

We will see him in action again, borne of a different form on the surface, but the Wolverine Hunter at his core all the same but hardened for his new foes.

The conversation actually went as follows:

Urban: "I believe I will not coach again."

Reporter: "Are you certain?"

Urban: "I am certain."

IMO, it's important that he reiterates and says he is certain. Though, I won't be mad if he takes another job in a few years. The man did so much for this university. We should only be thankful, regardless of what he decides to do.

Well....

He said, "believe" not "know". In fact, the follow-up question seems kind of stupid when considered in context. It doesn't matter to me either way and I'm certainly beyond grateful for his seven years here. It should be noted, though, that Meyer gave some of the most confounding answers ever! Best of luck and enjoy your family.

The cyst, his age, and grandchildren were enough for him to finally retire. Several coworkers said in two years he’ll take the USC or Miami job. Glad he’s staying around the school

Urban Meyer, puppetmaster from the press box. I like it lol. Jk, while it will be great to have Urban around the program still Day needs to make it his own as much as he can.

I don’t think anyone will get him because it’ll be too toxic for the next 4-6 years.  Imagine the bad press at USC or ND.

HS
Chewbucca's picture

I like the idea of him moving to a supportive role on the administrative side of things.  It could still be a benefit to Day to have Meyer's input on certain things.  Recruiting comes to mind.

HS

I too am glad that he’s going to remain in Columbus and stay close to the athletics program. I agree that he could indeed be very helpful with recruiting and other things related to the athletic department in the future.

The last sentence of this article, like are you kidding me ESPN, this man brought you a team that gave you some of the highest rated games ever, made you a ton of money and you honor him like this? Garbage, absolutely garbage.

With BTN and Fox taking many of the B1G games this year, thankfully, I did not have to watch that *#%@ channel very often.  Even Game Day sucks now, with Herbstreit becoming a typical ESPN political lemming.  In my book, he is no longer a Buckeye!

We desperately need an alternative to that piece of garbage masquerading as a sports channel.  If someone started a competing channel that just aired sporting events, didn't engage in political commentary, and didn't try to profit from character assassination, that channel could bury ESPN!

Please, by all means keep him in the area and around the athletic department.  Never say never, health could return, Day might not pan out (or pan out too much and go to the NFL) in a few years.  And it's hey Urbz got another 6-7 years in ya??

I man can dream.  But yeah, after what the administration allowed to happen to him, will not hold anything against him if he is on the opposing sideline in 2022 or whenever the hell we play ND at home.

HS

Why does everybody think ND is his dream job over OSU, that's just stupid, it's not OSU, it's not where he grew up, it's not the team he rooted for growing up and not the coaches he idolized....I know he loves Lou H (hell I hate ND and love Lou) and I know he did a brief stint there but he never had the kind of ties he has/had to OSU, never, this was his dream job.

Coach Meyer has built a juggernaut and did exactly what he said he’d do when he got hired: Make the Great State of Ohio Proud. He did just that. He’s done everything he can do to ensure the program continues that momentum with having Day succeed him and making a clean handoff in recruiting. I hope he remains in Columbus and stays involved with Ohio State as he says he will. This program will continue its dominance. We should all be thrilled to have been a part of this past 7 years, and I have a feeling Coach Day will to continue this program’s success. Godspeed, Coach Meyer!

Once Brian Kelly gets his ass handed to him by Clemson and the ND faithful grow tired of him, you'll hear the speculation of Urban going to ND.

If he ever coached again, it would be at ND. Long shot but you never know.

HS
andretolstoy's picture

The man literally said he's too sick to coach like he needs/wants too. I believe him.

He also said that he tried delegating and it didn't work. This may give us some answers as to why there were those frustrating inconsistencies in our play

If you die before you die, then you won't die when you die.

HS
CptBuckeye24's picture

I didn't say he was going to coach again. But rumors and endless speculation will always be there.

HS
MaxMermelstein's picture

Urban to ND makes no sense. He could have taken that job before he was hired at Florida, and he turned it down.

Shelly Meyer said there is no way in hell she's living in South Bend again. Happy wife, happy life.

HS

You can’t blame her. Ever been to South Bend?

He's called ND a dream job in the past. He had a provision in his Utah contract to go to ND without a buyout. He got more money from Florida, thought it was easier to win there and was more talented than ND. And he was right.

He's Catholic. He's talked about his affinity for ND. The speculation has been there and it won't go away until ND hires someone else after Kelly.

I think he is done. But the ND rumors will be there and they won't go away.

HS

Dunno. Weather is pretty nice in Miami or LA. And they liked the Florida climate.

HS
joeb69's picture

I think and I'm just spitballing here, if Meyer ever got back into coaching, the only scenario I could see is if Fickell leaves Cincinnati in the next couple of years. I could see Meyer go to Cincinnati, it's his Alma Mater, he played college ball there, his sister works there, his son goes there and he went to bat for the University a few years ago trying to get them accepted into the Big12. There would also be no pressure on him there because they know they have no chance at National titles

HS
Eph97's picture

I could see a situation where Day is wildly succesful and leaves for the NFL after 5 years. Urban, at age 59, bored, rested, and healthy gets the coaching bug again and comes back. That's the only scenario I see him coaching....unless the Browns come calling!

HS
BucksLover0214's picture

Saban is an exception, but all of football seems to be a young man's game.  I couldn't see Urban coming back unless Day flamed out in 2-3 years.  Then, maybe UFM would come back.  I think now that he's a grandfather, and he went out on such a high note, that I think he's actually done for good.

They hate us cuz they aint us!! ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

HS
IBLEEDSCARLETANDGRAY's picture

An ideal gig for Urban would be either an OSU's athletic department or an NFL front office gig where he has a set schedule, limited traveling, and freedom to be grandpa.

If his health makes a turn around and he feels the pull to come back to coaching, more power to him.

Urban Meyer left an incredible legacy. 12/4/18 Ryan Day begins his.

HS
buckeyepastor's picture

I don’t think he does return.  He recognized at UF that going like he did was too much for his health.  He adjusted and made some changes at least for a few years at OSU and it helped but has caught up with him again.  He has one way of doing things.  Could he return to coaching and be detached and let underlings run the whole operation?  His health could handle that.  But that’s not something he cares to do.  That’s what I take away from this retirement.

I've often wondered how TheOhioState would function with both Meyer and Tressel as part of the university somehow. Either Meyer as Coach, and Tressel as AD. Or, Meyer as AD and Tressel as President.

I think many people don't understand or appreciate what Gene Smith's job entails and what his own personal resume brings to that job.

http://buckeyeclub.org/letter-from-gene.php

The athletic department at OSU has an annual budget of over $170 M dollars that is managed and overseen by the AD.

Urban doesn't want to manage any of that. Nor do I believe he is remotely qualified to do so.  AD's need experience climbing the university ladder, with management, business, accounting degrees on their resumes.

HS
741's picture

Well stated. I do think that at some point Gene may end up running the B1G conference, but totally agree with the premise that Urban’s passion (impacting the lives of student athletes) is not truly aligned with the OSU AD job.

HS
Sail Buck's picture

I remembered Urban saying he would want to continue his relationship with Ohio State after his coaching years were over. I was afraid Ohio State had pissed him off and he was cutting ties. It sounds like Gene Smith is the tie that binds, and as long as Gene is around Urban May stay around.

Gene caught a lot of flack for the Urban situation, but I always felt like he fell on the sword for Urban by accepting a suspension of his own. Gene is a good man, a fantastic athletic director, and a great representative of Ohio State.

HS

And apparently the wild speculation that Gene and Urban have been at odds with each other for years is entirely untrue. Thank you Gene for being the bridge in this situation.

If he could coach, he would be coaching. He doesn't want to retire, but his issue is something that he's most likely going to have to deal with for the rest of his life & thus making him unable to make any long term commitment, which is why he stepped down as that affects the program on a variety of levels especially recruiting.

Call me cynical, but I have a funny feeling that we’re going to hear by the beginning of next football season that the Meyers are moving to Southern California so that Urban can take a job as Fox’s top college football analyst.  Connect the dots from there...

HS

Give him an office, a real office, in the WHAC. Make him an executive or associate AD, Football.  Charge him with developing culture, outreach to players and families, employment after graduation, some recruiting and let him mentor the coaches.

HS
clark15kent's picture

This is exactly my thought as well.  I see Gene asking him to expand real life Wednesdays for all OSU sports.  Would be a huge boost to all non revenue sports and raise the level of recruiting across the board.  Urban really seems to enjoy building the relationships and it would have to be a lot less stressful than coaching.

HS

They will NOT give him an office at WHAC. No way. Too much distraction and needs to keep him distanced to some extent from the day to day dealings.
