We'll miss you Coach Meyer - one of the best recruiters / closers that college football has ever seen.
Go get'em Cal Poppy - we are behind you !!
It's not a rivalry .............. it's a wreckoning.
It has been a "slow" recruiting cycle to this point, based on OSU's standards. With today's news, it is about to speed up very quickly!!
I am most interested to see Jordan Battle's reaction to the news..
Regardless of what happens with any one recruit let's please refrain from bashing as best we can. Jordan will be a battle to keep in the fold anyway :)
Classy comment. Let's hope everyone listens.
While it isn't what we wanted I will say it is very good news that both Marotti, Pantoni, and all support staff will be retained and staying on for the Ryan Day era. Cannot be understated how big a deal that is for our recruiting.
The other thing I'll say is there's never a great time to announce something like this there just isn't. However considering the potential of the 2020 class still looking great I am happy it happened now instead of next year. Mainly due for the 2019 class being not so great and top heavy compared to 2020.
Instead of being sad today I'm gonna be happy bc Urban can focus on family and health full time now and that's great news for his family which is what's important here. So I'd like to ask politely that instead of making this a negative situation that we support Coach Day who at 39 years old has a chance to be very good for a very long time.
Forgot to add that as much as I love Urban it will be nice to not have to worry about if our head coach is going to stay/retire/etc or have health problems on the recruiting front now.
And not to mention all the negative national media horseshit we would have continued to hear. I'm so saddened to see Urban go but I am really stoked for the future.
Fields of Dreams
Exactly! Will be nice to not hear rumors all year again. One thing that also cannot be understated is the fact that Day has a swagger and more importantly our out of conference schedule next year is a cake walk. Our schedule overall next year is extremely favorable to a new coach.
Plus the guy's the hand picked successor by Urban and that's telling. On a side note I plan to absolutely not get any work done today whatsoever.
I;m listening to a 2-hr corporate webcast on Year End crap right now, so yeah, I'm not really putting much effort into that. Gonna start perusing some twitter accounts to see if I can catch some tidbits from recruits.
Yeah, good luck negatively recruiting against us now Dabo! (although in hindsight he was right, dammit)
If Ann Arbor is a whore, what's Harbaugh for going back to her?
I love that we are keeping the continuity in place. I had to imaging that Coach LJ will remain, same for Coach Hartline. It will be interesting to see if Coach Wilson stays as the sole OC or if another offensive-minded coach is brought in. What a sad day, but I am really exciting for the future as well.
I see changes happening to the defensive side of the ball not named LJ, Grinch, and Taver.
LJ is the only one I dont want to lose. We could lose all our DL recruits and current defensive linemen if he retires too.
"You're the patron saint of the totally effed" - Hot Tub Time Machine
I should have also mentioned Tony Alford. He does a great job and the kids seem to love him. He is a 'must retain' as well.
So the defensive backfield coaching staff is going to be retained?
I think it's fair to say both Grinch and Taver will be kept on since they were recent hires. Think you may see Schiano and Davis going elsewhere.
What I would like to see is if what I said above happens, that we hire a young stud DL coach and make him the successor to LJ ......just in case over the next few years he rides off too. I'd rather be proactive than reactionary in that scenario.
I don't think Schiano is going elsewhere unless it's of his own volition.
I don’t. Day won’t do it. Won’t want to “mess up cohesion.”
Urban's toughest recruiting job just began for the next 2+ weeks - to convince kids to sign with OSU and play for a new coach. Guessing he will let Day and the position coaches take the lead but maybe he has a final trick up his sleeve too.
Probably, although from what I have gathered is that the position coaches do most of the recruiting. So it is relationships with them and the program. Not that Meyer is never involved, but he is part of the conversation and not the one drawing the kids in solo.
That said, having an elite coach like Meyer was probably the tie-breaker for quite a number of guys stuck between OSU and other schools.
Honestly, I wouldn't expect anything else from Garrett Wilson.
I imagine this means Jordan Battle is going to Alabama then?
I am also curious what impact this has on the 2020 class. There were a ton of bug fish that are very interested in OSU. How important was Meyer in their recruiting vs position coach vs interest in the program and how does this impact them. Success for any head coach is majorly impacted by the players you bring in.
I could be just wayyyyyy off on this but I'm not as worried about 2020 as I think some could be. I get that Urban is gone and there will be some impacts like Sherman who we could still land anyway.
But overall the foundation that's in place with the current commits is what keeps that class rolling IMO. Paris Johnson and company will be huge more so now than ever. But I do know had we not retained Day we would more than likely have been looking for a new QB for 2020 and Wilson wouldn't be all in as he's tweeted and that's not guessing.
I think the 2020 class will be fine. Jack miller loves day.
2019 was going to be a small class anyway but they need to keep it together. Hope recruits already were informed
Pantoni staying is massive
Stay golden, Ponyboy.
247 reported that Wilson was informed last night. If Wilson knew you'd think they told the rest of the class too.
Garrett Wilson said back in the Summer during the suspension that he was 100% to OSU as long as Urban or Day was coaching the Buckeyes.
I'd have to imagine that all recruits who happily and excitedly posted pics of their in-homes were notified last night. I don't think Jameson or Hickman would have looked as happy as they did if they planned on going elsewhere after hearing the news.
Greg McElroy said he called OSU games and met with Ryan Day one on one and he's going to be a hell of a recruiter. McElroy said Day is such a cool dude, he wanted to hug him and sign up to play for him right there. He is going to be a stud at Ohio State.

Interested to see if any new recruits pop up for the 2019 class that weren’t considering us before, or were worried about the uncertainty of the program. Day is a younger coach, he can relate to these kids differently. I think he’s going to work his ass off out there. I can’t wait to hear what he says. Hopefully he’s in it for the long haul and doesnf have eyes on the NFL. It’s time for him to get out and pound the pavement after the bowl game. Hes going to be shaking a lot of hands at Ohio high schools
Crootin'. Warp Speed edition.
Coach Day is going to bring the goods. Can't wait. Go Bucks!
If you want some entertainment, Clay Travis is popping off about Schiano probably getting fired now and how the Vols were right to avoid him. Well Joel Klatt is just ripping him a new one. LOL. Some good back and forth out there if you are so inclined.
Klatt has owned him for awhile now so that's nothing new.
What is refreshing is that Klatt and Gus Johnson are without a doubt the best commentary duo going right now. And Klatt is the most objective commentator in the biz bc he keeps it real all the time and plays no favorites whatsoever. So glad we have games on Fox now and not that other network for the most part.
The fact that most of Buckeye fans like this pair who both happen to be big Michigan fans really says something.
Klatt is a Michigan fan?! I had no idea. Speaks volumes. Usually Michigan fans can't help but be obnoxiously biased.
See Desmond Howard.
Marcus Crowley is staying with OSU. Such an underrated player.
I don't think most fans realize the talent were getting wth him. But provided he stays healthy they will.
He had 2+k yards in one of the toughest divisions in football, and had like 30 total TDs. He's vastly underrated by the recruiting services, but will probably get bumped to fringe top 10 at position in next set of rankings. Let's see where Rivals has him this week
Toughest division in football? TCA would be the equivalent of division 3 or 4 in Ohio. They don't play the "big boys" of the state.
“You know how they say we only use 10 percent of our brains? I think we only use 10 percent of our hearts.”
Not sure about this season, but they did play IMG (and hung with them fairly well) a couple of years ago. I'd have to imagine that their schedule is pretty respectable at the very least.
It was 34-21 IMG, Wade balled out but year Trinity isn't a joke and I bet there's over 100 schools in Florida that would be able to keep up with D1 in Ohio.
You're right, TCA isn't a joke. But to say Crowley played in one of the toughest divisions this year isn't correct. Check the schedule and see for yourself.
I'm not denying that they play a respectable schedule, many teams do. But to your original point about Crowley playing in the toughest division isn't true THIS YEAR. Check the schedule.
7A and 6A are actually tougher in FL. If you watch the playoffs you can see the difference in talent. I'd put 8A third.
Well I said one of. I would say it's top 10 probably behind the top 2-3 in Florida, Cali and Texas
I'm not familiar with CA, GA, PA, TX, or NJ football divisions.
CA has 3 main ones to pay attention Open, D1 and D1-AA. Open has the best schools
GA is 5A and 6A at the top and top divisions have the best schools
PA is goes up to 6A and that's where all the big boys play.
Texas moved up to 6A recently and most of the D1 talent comes from 4A-6A with 6A being the best.
NJ it's Non-public group 4 where all the private schools play each other and most have 5-10 D1 guys at a minimum.
Yeah you may need to get caught up on Florida HS football, those lower divisions are actually the toughest with Miami Central, Miami Northwestern, Booker T when Ice was there, Cocoa, list goes on. 7 and 8 A had more parity.
I'm quite aware, TCA didn't not one team you mentioned. Bulldog is talking about Crowley this year, right? Toughest team they played this year would be Braden River or Bolles. My point stands. Sorry, if this makes you upset.
Not upset about it, just pointing out that the equivalency of your Ohio divisions is way off.
I read somewhere that some think he is the best RB prospect in Florida. He just stopped doing camps, etc as he had been verballed to Miami for so long, so his rating suffered. The kid is a beast.
Bill Greene reporting OSU will be having a in-home with Battle tonight. Unsure at this time who will be representing OSU at the meeting.
I've got to imagine, that any In-Home Urban is on, that Day is with him. Let the kids and parents ask anything they want and be honest about the whole thing.
You're too stupid to have a good time. -Dalton
I would hope Meyer joins in on the key remaining in-homes for the class of 19. Battle & Harrison are two guys we don't want to let get away.
Miller to me is the big one. He could come in and challenge for the starting job ASAP
Miller seems about as rock solid to OSU as you can get. But at this point nothing seems to shock me. The one that worries me is Battle
I think we will be fine with Miller who I think is set to enroll early (could be wrong on that?). But Coach Day has a great relationship with the Millers.
I am rooting for the kid but we will see.
I can see that too. With Jordan shifting back over to LG.
I've maintained that Josh Myers or Miller will be the starting center next year. Jordan filled in admirably since no one else was ready, but needs to go back to guard.
Munford-Jordan-Myers-Davis-NPF would be a hell of an OL next year. Jones could also step up big in year 2.
That's the 5 I see out there. Though if Bowen returns that could shake things up. With Wray and Jones being the top subs.
100% Committed #GoBucks
— Jack Miller (@jackjamesmiller) December 4, 2018
I want a fall Saturday in Ohio Stadium..
Wrong Miller, but still great to see!
Scrolling got me - but still relevant!
Givler acknowledged today that Day was the biggest factor in landing Garrett Wilson, Mathis, Jack Miller, and Harry Miller.
I would be shocked if Harry didn't follow through with his commitment bc his and his family's relationship with Day is very strong.

Dwan Mathis still committed
Nice. Anxious to see what day does with him
I like Dwan Mathis-he has a real leader's attitude, not a corporate twitter captains version of #leadership
Per Birm, recruits who officially visited Ohio State can take another official visit due to new NCAA rules.
The world is yours
This, although minor in the grand scheme, could be part of the reason to announce now. Give time for recruits to come back for another paid visit before signing day.
Urban out here playing 5d Chinese checkers
Well that's interesting. I hope the kids take advantage of that opportunity.
Per Givler, Steele Chambers will be taking advantage and will be taking another official to Columbus.
To any school or just back to ohio State?
just back to ohio state
Just Ohio State, due to the coaching change.
Only recruits that are committed?
Since being committed isn't binding, I assume this would apply to anyone.
Not an expert but believe it applies to any players that have taken one of their five official visits to Ohio State prior to this coaching change.
Troy- This would make sense to me. But according to AL, it only applies to committed recruits. In a world of silent commits, and being “committed” comes from a twitter post, or a private conversation between player and coach, I have no idea how the NCAA can determine who is committed or not. Guess we’ll see how it plays out. I expect we’ll see a lot of returned visitors in the next couple of weeks.
I'm fairly certain Lind is off base with that tweet. "Committed" is not a term recognized by the NCAA, only signed and unsigned. I believe the rule is, if a player has taken an official visit to a school and that school has a coaching change, the player can take another official to that school (and only that school).
188.8.131.52.1 Exception—Additional Visit After Departure of Head Coach. After a new head coach is hired, an institution may finance one additional visit for a prospective student-athlete who previously received an official visit to the institution. Visits provided pursuant to this exception shall also be excluded from the limitations on the number of official visits set forth in Bylaws 184.108.40.206, 220.127.116.11.2, 18.104.22.168.3, 22.214.171.124.4 and 126.96.36.199.6. [D] (Adopted: 4/25/18, Revised: 5/11/18)
OSU is also permitted an additional 25% of the total allowed official visits (56, so an extra 14) per the bylaws:
188.8.131.52.6 Head Coaching Change. In baseball, basketball and football, an institution may provide additional official visits (up to 25 percent of the limitation for the particular sport) after a new head coach is hired, provided the previous head coach used 75 percent or more of the official visits permitted for that academic year. [D] (Adopted: 1/11/94 effective 8/1/94, Revised: 1/12/99 effective 8/1/99, 4/29/04, 11/1/07 effective 8/1/08, 10/29/09, 8/21/12, 5/11/18)
Sorry Urban, Woody is still my favorite
In case the news has you really bummed then think about this:
Urban won about 90% of his games here but now we're moving to a new coach who's won 100% of his games here.
Also the last coach that was hired under 40 years of age I believe was Woody so there's that
And neither was B1G COY...lol.
Apparently you have to salvage your season after losing to Akron in order to win that prestigious award.
Let the work begin! Excited to watch this new staff go to work like their hair is on fire. I love when this program has something to prove. Seems to bring out the best
Harry Miller's mom statement to the Athletic:
“Harry is at school and I’ve instructed him to turn off his phone. I do not want to comment on anything until we can speak in person. Urban and I had a long private conversation yesterday morning. You know we have more than a Coach/recruit relationship. Ryan is an elite-level coach and is going to do an incredible job. No doubt. He is an even better person and we are as close to him as we are to Urban.”
Seems like great news, this part confuses me though:
Harry is at school and I’ve instructed him to turn off his phone. I do not want to comment on anything until we can speak in person.
Maybe my brain just isn't working this morning?
Your brain is working, and this is not 100% done. Per BK he did fill out an application to Stanford just in case. Recruiting to be done on this one--the Millers LOVED Urban.
"and we are as close to him as we are to Urban."
I think that seems to sum it up. Also provided that she and Urban had a long talk makes it seem like he smoothed anything over with them so that Harry still shows up. Add in the contract language and rumbles that Urban will still be around the program in a different capacity lends itself to recruits staying.
News came out today, no reason for him to be at school bombarded with stuff.
Maybe they didn't know EXACTLY when this was going to go down
He's at school would you want dozens of reporters calling your child while at school to see if he's staying committed?
And yes the overall tone of the message is very positive and re-affirms that their relationship to Day is as strong as it was with Urban.
Yeah; I'm not sure I'd read too much into that. I wouldn't want my 17/18-year-old son being bombarded by the media, while at school, either. Especially when said media is really looking for an isolated soundbite that they can state in misleading fashion.
I think they knew but just maybe his mother doesn't want him bombarded and distracted by coaches from other schools calling and texting trying to take advantage of the situation.....
Lots of rumors going around Urban will stay on in an Admin role inside the WHAC. Would be some more good news if true
My thought was he would be like one of those consultants Saban has been hiring annually. He can mentor Day through his first couple years, then see if he wants to stay on as AD or do something with alumni
That would be a nuclear boom if it happens.
That is the news I would love to hear official. I thought that maybe the case prior to the all the drama this year. Hopefully, the rumors are not rumors.
Jameson Williams' dad told Bama 247 site his son is solid with tOSU.
Between Day and Hartline our QB/WR recruiting will have never been better. Add in Haskins + WR's for this draft and it should be fun times
Im Solid ! 100% #GoBucks
— juiceman (@1of1juiceman) December 4, 2018
Jameson Williams says he’s 100% committed
Slightly worried about Harry Miller. Day needs to recruit him hard going down the stretch. If we can hang on to him and Jordan Battle, it would go a long way to finishing 2019 recruiting up with some momentum.
Since Day has been named next Head Coach, do all his in-home visits now count as head coach in-homes? Or does that not start until Jan 2 when the retirement becomes effective?
I’m guessing it counts as a HC visit since it does if a there is a coach in waiting agreement in place.
"You can never pay back, but you can always pay forward."
I don't think you can have 2 HCs at once, so I would assume he's an Asst Coach until 1/2/19.
Does Day steal all our hearts by locking down ZH?
Maybe Henry Miller has been tod that Stud will not be kept around. I would hate to lose Miller but Ohio State needs a better OL coach.
Not sure why some are worrying about Harry. They are just as close to Day as they were with Urban. You don't say a comment like that then say see ya later lol. If you're thinking about leaving you'd say we need to talk about this as a family not give Coach Day a glowing review.
I'm not sure why you aren't taking this statement ("I do not want to comment on anything until we can speak in person") as anything other than this is not 100.0% one way or the other. It very well may be 99%, and I hope it is, but we don't know that. They gave Day a glowing review, but we all know how close they were with Urban. Yes, in her statement she says they are equally close with Day, but he applied to Stanford while being committed for a reason.
I am not sure anything is 100%, but I did not take that as super negative in the context of the rest of it. The next sentence was saying they were as close to Day as to Meyer. That they want to talk about it, seems logical. Given they have not had the chance if he is at school.
Per Givler, he's hearing from others LJ staying on staff.
HUGE! LJ was the one I was most concerned about. IMO he should be promoted to Associate HC once Day shitcans Gregory
He already is the associate HC
He's a rung below Schiano. He's Assistant Head Coach, Schiano is Associate. It's semantics, but give him a bit of a raise.
Assistant to the Head Coach*
Hahahaha *clapping emoji*
That would be huge. No better D-line coach in America IMO.
Edit: great minds think alike! ;)
You Got Barbecue Back There!?!?!?!
was Gilver saying this in response to BG hearing LJ goes to Maryland as DC if they hire Locksley?
No not a response to that since he created the thread himself. I get there could be a rumor of LJ to MD as DC but outside of that being an area he knows what sense does that make for either party? You're going to hire a guy who's never called a defensive play in what?.....all of the 20 or 30 years he's been coaching? I get it coukd make sense on some level but not on others. If anything he's likely to bring someone from Bama or retain and promote a guy like Aazaar Abdul-Rahim who btw would be a great recruiter to add to our own staff. Not saying that's happening though.
The Millers probably just don’t want to “react” to all the questions without catching their breath. That, and the kid is in school. It’s not the time or place for reporters to be contacting him.
I know Urban Meyer has been an absolute beast as a coach and a recruiter but these commits should look into the legacy and the tradition of this great university and stay to play for one of the best college football programs of all time.
What about Nester has anyone heard anything about him, absolutely do not want to loose him either.
Without giving out direct paid quotes, the tl;dr from some reputable rival recruiting experts is that the 2019 Buckeye class won't be impacted much with the quick turnaround. 2020 is where things will get interesting, especially in the DMV against Bama, Clemson and PSU.
I have seen varying opinions on it. Some guys have confirmed against, have not heard from all. It will be interesting to see what impact it has on guys OSU is after at the moment. Seems too early to know for sure.
It would be unrealistic to think that there would ever be no impact. OSU needs to make some waves in the 2020 class. Seems like Alabama, Clemson and PSU (and UM) are usually the teams OSU is fighting it out with anyway.
Michael Tarquin just decommitted from Da U. Wouldn't be shocked to see him taking visit in the near future.
Think he flipped to Florida when he decommitted, but maybe I'm wrong.
He committed to Florida yesterday
The funny thing is that Michigan is going to try to flip recruits telling them Urban is leaving
Ohio State is going to try to flip recruits telling them Harbaugh is staying

That tweet made my day a little better
That's nice. It brought a big smile to my face.

We would never stoop so low.
Per Gilver, Harry Miller's mother says it is now uncertain if he will sign early and they will discuss it more tonight.
Have to wait and see, although her initial quote was very high on Ryan Day.
oh man. They just need to talk to Coach Day a bit. To me, he's just like Urban but squeaky clean. How anyone cannot be drawn to him is beyond me. He killed it at the Press Conference IMO.
I am not sure that it was a knock on Day, she said they were all high on Day too, but if one of the things they wanted most was to play for Meyer than it will cause a re-evaluation. It may come up being the same and it may not. I hope it does, looks like a great player .
I know everyone talks about Garrett Wilson and rightly so, but to me, Harry Miller is the most important recruit of this class. I hope Day is on a plane to Georgia right now to have an in-home visit with him.
Pick up your feet, turn your corners square! And DRIVE DRIVE DRIVE!!!
Well, Day is going to 3-4 states tomorrow and I would guess that Georgia is on the list.
I don't think it's crazy for a recruit like Miller to say, you know, no harm in taking a few more weeks to think about it.
"I don't think you necessarily have to get a trophy to be a winner." - Nick Saban 1/2/15.
Yeah, really all you can do is go in and say that Meyer is leaving for health reasons, will still be involved in the athletic department and that the goal is to try and live up to his legacy. Not sure what more you can do.
If the main draw was Meyer for them than you are not going to get them at this point, sadly. However, Miller's mom did seem to be very high on Ryan Day too. So, I do not think this is freak out he is going somewhere else mode quite yet. That they want to talk it through as a family is not shocking. I doubt you talk to recruits all year that you may retire at the end of it.
I imagine for all of these guys, other schools are going to push even harder now that some guys are facing uncertainty. One does not envy Ryan Day.
Givler didn't say that and if he did I'm not seeing it. I had it wrong above Miller was not one of the early enrollees at any point.
I got it from the link he tweeted with recruit reactions. The quote is "There is a lot to think about but Ryan Day is elite, and an even better person. It is uncertain if Harry will sign early, we will talk about this more tonight."
Ah saw it in the actual article. Didn't realize he was updating it there. Still not all too worried about Harry since Day was instrumental in landing him.
Maybe Meyer can stay on as recruiting coordinator.
Based on what I saw in the press conference, I think he might be.
It's a beautiful day in Columbus, Ohio... and TTUN still sucks.
Anyone else kind of feel like along with Lejond, Battle may be out sooner than later...hopefully not, but if so I hope Day can get another solid DB in this class
Honestly, the fact that he’s not already decommitted is a win. As long as we can keep him from signing on signing day (because it will be to Bama if he does), then I think we have a legit shot
To judge a recruiting class simply add up how many players they have in the top 50 and then how many they have in the top 100. This will be Meyer's worst recruiting class if this holds as is. I think the bad press made things hard to recruit this year. But with the momentum at the end of the season I'm thinking they could have picked up another linemen or elite defensive back or two.
Still would fall short of other classes
Moreover, after recent updates the top of Michigan's 2019 class is better than the top of OSU's. And that's before the possible decommittment of Harry Miller.
Day has his job cut out for him. With the pieces in place -- specifically with the best two-year crop of recruits in the nation between the 2017 and 2018 classes -- he needs to have a VERY good year next year. I believe he will.
If Day can’t figure out how to piece together a top 10 class in 2019 and a top 5 class in 2020, he took the wrong job. He’ll be out in 3 years. So we are gonna find out real soon if he’s the right guy. Real soon.
Are you negative about absolutely everything you post? Day basically has two weeks to finalize the 2019 class, who are prob shocked Urban just retired. He's also the biggest reason the guys on the offense side of the ball in 2019 will stay in the class. Day already deserved the most credit for a 2019 class that, outside of his contributions, frankly isn't one of the better Buckeye classes as of now. Even Saban's first Bama class was outside of the top 10, because it's almost impossible to have a top class during a coaching change. Think it's a coincidence Stoops retired during the summer?
That is not even clsoe to how you judge a recruiting class. I get everybody is panicking but this class currently is third in average recruit rankings. It is going to be hard to close with a new coach but all he needs to do is hold on to commits and fill it out with solid developmental guys. will still be a top 10 class and better than 2015
Pretty sure they always planned for this to be small because they redshirted more players than they thought they would and have been in a numbers crunch the last few years. Regardless, the ratings per player are still high, which I would take any day over a whole slew of guys that you’re just taking a flyer on
Ohio State will close strong in recruiting. The uncertainty is now gone. Give it time. We're fine.
I think there will be some clear attrition for recruiting but it’s not going to be something to burn the program to ashes. Cavazos has already decommited for 2020. I expect that Luke Wypler will probably also decommit. Both could wind up coming back eventually if everything works out. I expect Paris to stay in the fold and for this recruiting class I think Jordan Battle is as good as gone and Steele Chambers and Harry Miller are two to watch who may waver a bit. Other than that, I think it won’t be too bad.
i would hope recruits would commit because of the school. The Ohio State University is bigger than Woody, Earl, Tress and Urban. I would hope to think that we would keep them all. If we loose one or two so be it. We will pick up 3-4 just like the kid!!! Go Bucks!!
This class is falling apart already.... going to see a massive drop off in talent this year and years to come. You can’t tell me Day goes down to Florida and gets guys like the Bosas. He may be a cool hip guy but those smoke and mirrors fade. I’m sure Day will pick up some local Ohio kids who wouldn’t have gotten offers from urban because he was frying bigger fish. Guys like urban and Saban get recruits by reputation and championships. All those recruiting edges walked out the door today.
final word: Ryan Day = mark helfrich of oregon
Since you have the Ryan Day era already written, can you please tell me the lottery numbers?
Actually Day is more chip kelly. I would suggest taking some meds and relaxing
We don’t know what Day is. Anyone saying they do is full of it. The same things being said about Day are the same things said about Helfrich at the time of his hire. It’s way to early to tell either way.
Cool story.......go make our own thread on it then Ms. Cleo :)
I was pretty gloom yesterday, but even so, the class is hardly falling apart. I got some time and distance between yesterday and today. We gonna be alright.
Even if we aren't going to be alright we don't know that yet so no need to get all worked up.
Birm had a run down of who was solid in this 2019 class. Had nester as solid, battle was a toss up and miller was a little bit of a concern.
Ryan Day hitting the trail - in Springfield, Illinois tonight, watching Nick Broeker hooping it up.
Per Michigan247, Michigan will have an inhome visit this Thursday that includes Harbaugh. Also Harrison has apparently said that “he can’t go to Michigan if he’s always going to lose to Ohio State”.
Also Harrison has apparently said that “he can’t go to Michigan if he’s always going to lose to Ohio State”.
Sounds like he wants to go to Michigan but is just worried about being embarrassed. Honestly, fuck that. If you don't want to be a Buckeye then that's it for me
I took it that way too. It's definitely the opposite of 'If I go to Ohio State I could beat Michigan every year'
Did he not watch the battle of the Chase's during the game ??
I’m so over this recruitment. Day needs to go in there and tell him to jump on this train, or get ran over by it. Things in recruiting may get a little worse before they get better. As long as we don’t lose guys like Johnson and Miller, we should be ok. I haven’t heard anything but it seems likely that Jordan Battle will probably go to Bama. Salvage this class, and get ready for a great 2020 class. I think Day is going to be a great recruiter. He isn’t the rock star Urban was (yet). But he’s younger and I think he will relate with recruits in a different way
Watch him end up at Penn State just so he isn't as embarrassed losing to Ohio State every year.
I find it very funny that a a very very quiet kid like Zach, who mind you hates doing interviews to the point where there's like a maybe handful of them he's done. Idk I just find it funny that there's apparently all these quotes of his out there. For a kid who chooses to basically not talk to anyone about recruiting that seems strange to me.
Okay I hate to be that guy, but apparently Harrison didn’t have a good connection with Meyer, so do you think Meyer retiring and Day taking over helps Ohio State land Harrison now???
Hate to ask that. But if that was a key factor in his decision not to come to Ohio State, then Meyer retiring would help you would think.
Posted in the previous part that the head coaches have not mattered in his recruitment. This is a battle between LJ and Washington. As long as LJ stays, and Givler said he has bullet proof sources he is, then we can win this one despite Urbz retirement.
I have also read inconsistent things about the relationship with Meyer. Birm and others, more recently, have said that they have a good relationship.
Yeah Givler flat out denied there was any bad relationship between the two and that contrary to reports they had been talking very recently.
1st recruit...new LB coach
If you have nothing to hide you have nothing to fear.
Marcus Freeman- Linebackers and Co-DC
Is Dwan Mathis an early enrollee for this cycle ?
Clemson student. GO BUCKS!
I will try and find a link to early enrollees but I recall reading yesterday that he was.
If you take a step back to look at everything that I unfolded yesterday from a recruiting perspective I believe it went about as well as we could have hoped for. We suffered 1 knee jerk decommitment from a 2020 verbal and that was really the only damage to this point.
Now fully acknowledging that things change on a dime in the recruiting world, but we went from a legend to a less proven albeit rising star at head coach. Considering the reactions yesterday I'd say the positives definitely outweighed the negatives IMO. It could have been much worse and again IMO would have been had we made an outside hire. Now we're not through the woods yet but all things considered it was a positive first day for our new coach.
Losing Wray stinks. I'm hoping during his visit Friday that Paris Johnson gets the answers he needs from Day and remains in the class. It would be unbelievable to lose him as well
Well considering our OL commits have no relationship with Stud it appears (Givler confirmed btw) it's not shocking that the OL guys are the one position group across both classes freaking out right now. Need to cut ties with his ass ASAP IMO.
Premium content so won't reveal too much, but Kurelic is very confident on many of the guys we were potentially worried about (Miller, Nester, Hickman, Wypler, Paris). Based on no concerns about Hickman and Wypler I think he must think Day will keep Schiano. In his Wypler comment he basically said it was a strong contingency on Schiano being retained.
His only up in the air guys between the two classes: Battle, Hubbard, Cavazos
Hubbard? That's interesting. I wonder why that is. Hubbard had said he can't wait to 'get back home'.
Would love to have him but he is the one we could probably most afford to lose- ‘20 RB class is loaded with plenty of guys interested.
Totally concur with your take. I'm just shocked that he is considered on the fence.
Well just read a piece from Birm and it said that OSU has had little contact with Hubbard. Seems like maybe they are freezing him out. Similar to what happened with Sampson James.
not mad at this. we are close to the top of the list for a good number of backs that are better.
Even in his state!
Was a fan of Hubbard earlier in the process, however just like most classes, many talented kids start sprouting out around their jr. season and this kid is a prime ex.
Guess he wasn’t thinking Wray as a possible one :/
I expect his brother to transfer at some point
Only my personal guess, but I presume most people thought he would be solid just based on his brother alone. I actually started to get a little worried when he made a big deal out of his QB Bailey picking Tennessee over TTUN. I wondered then if that opened his interest to Tennessee even then...
Jake was the ringleader of the 2020 class and recruiting other guys. This one will hurt.
I have to disagree. Paris Johnson is the key leader to this class.
Honestly Battle was already a toss up so this really isn't going poorly. Wray will likely end up back in the class
Just asking, what makes you think Jake recommits?
His brother Max is currently a freshmen and would be a junior when Jake is a freshmen. They could have 2 if not 3 years together here. Spooner also just posted a link from Givler in the 2020 thread about Stud having 0 relationship with the Oline commits. So basically their relationship was only Urban since Stud didn't talk to them, once Stud is replaced and Ryan Day forms that relationship I would imagine it won't be too challenging to get him back. He also just moved schools this year so his relationships with Harrison Bailey and Arik Gilbert are concerning but it's not like he grew up with those guys. His relationship with his brother and age proximity will easily beat those relationships.
Didn't say Stud didn't talk to them but it was implied it was probably very little of no true relationship existed. Either way that's bs
Thx spartan and spoon!
A local newspaper is reporting that Nester is no longer enrolling early...Birm just quote tweeted it
His quotes aren't encouraging either. He is going to take officials to other schools and heavily evaluate his options. Still committed at the moment, but can't see that sticking.
Here is some info just posted by Bill Kurelic. Nester is taking his Official to Ohio State this coming weekend, which is great! He is not confirmed to take any other officials at this point. Also, it says that he is not enrolling early because he is not graduating early. It is not tied to any uncertainty with the coaching change. Hopefully the staff can lock this kid down this weekend.
Positive news if BK is going out on that limb.
Yeah for sure. It conflicts a little bit with what was recently posted on the front page of 11W (where he does say he wants to take a step back and assess). But regardless, I love the fact that he's gonna visit this weekend. Paris Johnson is visiting on Friday as well.
I mean it is not ideal, but it is not the end of the world either.

Frost just got his Rondale Moore.
I do like Day a lot but if I could have any young coach in the country it’d be Frost. Would have interesting if Urban retired last year if we would have went after him.
Ryan Jacoby reaffirmed via twitter.
He also captioned it "Great home visit with my future coaches!!" with Day and Stud in the pic. I thought it was interesting he said coaches, anyone think they told him Stud is for sure coming back?
Based on the context of the tweet Stud will be back
I wouldn't be so sure. Everett Withers was still on the trail till January so him being on the trail now means nothing.
I seriously hope Day doesn't consider retaining him. I mean he couldn't build a solid relationship with Paris Johnson and he visits every weekend and lives an hour from campus from christ sake.
I hope you are right
I hope so too. Looking at the pic though looks like Day is standing close and comfortable next to Jacoby. Then look over at Stud and see how he's standing further away from Jacoby than Day is. Even gives minimal effort on taking pics with recruits too smh...
BREAKING: Spring Valley's Doug Nester not enrolling early at Ohio State following coaching transition. @GrantTraylor @SWiltfong247 https://t.co/y2afzvGutz
— The Herald-Dispatch (@heralddispatch) December 5, 2018
With both Wray and Nester being unsure in light of the transition, I really have to wonder if they know something about Studrawa.
If you scroll up BK reported that it has to do with not graduating early as opposed to the coaching transition. He is not decommitting or anything.
Huntington, WV isnt necessarily a bastion of relevant sports news so they are going to spin this story however they can to generate page views.
Did everyone hear my bff @ryandaytime just became Head Coach of @OhioStateFB?! Wow! He is going to be extraordinary! Elite Coach, even better person. On the shoulders of giants, on his own way 2 greatness. Congrats my friend, Nina & kids too! See U 2morrow #LegendInTheMaking pic.twitter.com/OZ2zxiVObE

Well thank god Ryan Day is able to establish relationships with OL commits lol
This seems pretty pretty pretty good.
Well this seems promising
Awesome! Glad he's still on board!
Those who say they can and those who say they can't are both right. Which one are you?
More importantly, glad momma is still on board. He's a momma's boy for sure.
Way to piss on the chicken littles recruiting pity party!!!!!!!!!!!!
With everyone and their brothers out on the recruiting trail attacking our situation, it's only natural things will be a little dicey until things settle down a bit.
I don't think there is much to the Harbaugh leaving for the NFL rumors but oh the irony of OSU being negatively recruited over Urban potentially leaving and now it is flipped on to Michigan in the span of two days.
Any Jordan Battle update? Wasn't someone from the staff supposed to visit him last night, or did that get moved back to next week?
Believe Grinch, Schiano, and LJ were. Not sure when Day is expected but I'm sure he will visit soon as well. Have not heard any details.
Has anyone heard when our in home visit with ZH is? I know they said it was supposed to be sometimes this week
Not sure but Givler would be the one to release the details on our visit schedule. Think he's waiting to release the details on it though. It also may be next week for all staff but I think LJ may have seen Zach once this week.
So, if assistants can have unlimited home visits and head coaches only one, could Day visit ZH many times before Jan 2 as long as Urban only goes once?
No bc he's the acting head coach since he signed the 5 year $20 million deal this week.
It also appears Noah Potter reaffirmed via twitter as well.

That's a big 1 to me. His senior film looks great. Uses his hands very good. Add some strength and he's ready to roll. Big time underrated.
Time to make the journey to old Cade Stover’s house
Yup. Ones we can't lose this class, Stover, Miller and Wilson!
Per rivals Jacobs taking an official to osu this weekend
Good next step is to lockdown Eichenberg
Flip flip flip flip!
He already decommitted
Nicholas l Ernst
Jestin Jacobs did? Not sure you're correct, I know Eichenberg decommitted.
I was just speaking about Eichenberg.. but all my Hawkeye buddies are siren jestin is just a matter of time at this point
Well how about this flip, flip, flip (Jacobs) and commit, commit, commit (Eichenberg).
Boom problem solved and no misunderstanding!
Awesome news! Sounds very promising.
Awesome news. I’m pumped. I think other than stover him, stover and Eichenberg would be a hell of a linebackers class. Plus there’s Craig young and maybe chambers moves over. Think Jacobs has a little darron lee in him with how athletic he is. His highlight tape is fun to watch. There’s a reason his ranking has skyrocketed.
I’m impressed by Day’s ability to hit the ground running on recruiting. Quick out of the gate. Hope it yields positive results. It’s hard in today rockstar world of college basketball and football recruiting. Given time, Day can be that rockstar as well.
Has no choice he's making up for the shortcomings of others. Also heard today Taver hasn't exactly been lighting it up on the trail. If that's the case then he can get the boot as well. This is a first time head coach and he needs to make sure he has everyone all in on the recruiting trail busting their ass day in and day out to bring the best to Cbus.
I've said before that the I thought the Taver hire was pretty meh. He didn't exactly light it up recruiting the first time around. If he can't recruit based on the current talent and recent history then it isn't going to happen.
Bring back Coombs, or at least try, I have no idea if Coombs is happy or not in his current position.
No way he’s leaving the nfl for a parallel move. He’d have to be a DC.
Is he happy? I’m not arguing with you just asking. I have no clue as I really don’t follow the NFL.
Titans are in the hunt for an AFC wildcard spot. Vrabel will have at least another season maybe two to get them in the playoffs. Unless we offer Coombs a ton of money and a better gig he isnt going anywhere short of Vrabel losing his job.
That I don't know. Seen a few clips of him at practice and he seems to be the same guy. But who knows.
I think we're making a lot of assumptions about Coombs. He's ~55 years old and coaching his 1st year in the NFL and outside of Ohio. Does he even want to be a DC? Does he like the NFL or does he prefer college? Does he like living outside Ohio? I admit Nashville is pretty great but you never know what someone prefers. My point is, the guy is 55 years old and could want to come back to coach CBs at Ohio St because he loves developing kids and is passionate about it. God knows we could use the Juice he brings everyday.
Well...if he liked it so much why did he leave?
Maybe he wanted the challenge of the NFL? Maybe he knew Urban was thinking of retiring and thought if someone from the outside came to OSU, that he'd be out? Or maybe absence made the heart grow fonder or the grass wasn't necessarily greener. Anyway, If Day isn't happy with Taver, a phone call to Coombs and $750k/year is worth a shot.
Maybe he wanted the challenge of the NFL?
I think that's exactly what he said upon leaving. He's won a championship at the HS level and then won a NC at Ohio State (college). Wanted to try and win a SB in the NFL. I doubt he gives up on that after one year, unless he hates the NFL. Which I don't see just yet.
He might be willing to come back in another year or two, if Tennessee isn't getting better and/or he doesn't think he'll win a SB (or he hates the NFL).
Titans need to ditch Mariota if they are going to win it all.
That job may be available... hmmm
Yep. We already know that Day can game-prep and game-coach, and that he is a good recruiter as a #2. Remaining questions:
- can he be a hard ass on firing the low performers?
- can he manage a large scale recruitment effort?
People keep comparing Day to Riley, as a young OC taking over. But I want to see him be a Kirby Smart and bring in a top 3 class in 2020 and set the tone for how recruitment will work.
I think Tavar can be replaced... I was not impressed with the hire in the first place.
Urban wasn’t lying when he said “you better be in 4 states recruiting tomorrow”
The best thing about Ryan Day getting the job is he learned everything under Coach Meyer. He knows what it takes to run this business, and he knows he's going to need to recruit at the same level.
Not only that but he has arguably Urbans top two guys at his side in Pantoni and Marotti. Pantoni knows what he’s doing
Yeah, retaining those two was a massive plus.

He got bumped to a 4* on rivals, although I'm not sure the 23rd ranked back in the country makes sense based on that award
Dude is a horse. Can't wait to see him in the Scarlet and Gray.
This is more staff-related than recruiting-related, but per Bucknuts guys, Stud is out. "Mark it down with a sharpie".
BG also said Davis is "walking the plank" lol. So hoping he's right about that.
I'd be shocked if Stud or Davis came back. David: easily replaceable. Stud: he's been a B-minus, but A-level line coaches don't grow on trees.
The big question is Schiano. It's a two way question: does Day want him? And does he want to work for Day?
Great news! Be interesting to see who Day brings in. Has to be a good recruiter and good at teaching obviously.
Another name that makes sense outside of Eric Wolford at South Carolina is Justin Frye who's currently at UCLA and coached at BC with Day.
In the event Schiano or Grinch leave then Anthony Campanile at BC makes a lot of sense. Former Don Bosco head coach that Day follows on Twitter. Would be a big boost to east coast recruiting bc he's very well respected in that region.
I remember Campanile's name being thrown around for Coombs replacement if I'm not mistaken. This should be a very exciting off season.
Correction Campanile was a coordinator for Bosco not HC.
Im on BN and haven’t seen this. Where at?
I believe it was in yesterday’s boarding house
That is glorious news. Cut the deadweight
Per BG, Eichenberg has his official visit set for next weekend. Also said he thinks he's a done deal to tOSU. Unless Broecker or Jacobs beat him Tommy may end being the first verbal of the Day era.
He also said he isn't confident about Jacobs at all which is a bit confusing since all along we've been hearing that if he takes an official there is a really good chance of a flip. Would be huge to get both of them.
Yeah situation where despite making an official it's not a guarantee. Our staff will have to work to get him on board.
I think the pull of playing at Ohio State will be too much for Jacob to pass on
Much of recruiting is about relationships. He has one with Iowa and has for a long time. Getting him in for an official is big in terms of trying to sell him on OSU, but he could very easily stick with what he knows better.
Yes, certainly. But the reality is we've been told multiple times if he officials it's pretty likely he'll flip (regardless of relationship deficiency vs. Iowa). BG is saying he isn't confident of a flip at all, so it's worth noting.
I thought Iowa had a no-official visit policy with their commits?
Like all things there are people the rules apply to and those to whom they don’t.
Steve Wiltfong and Sam Webb Crystal balled Trevor Keegan to Michigan who announces in a few days. Their most glaring weakness on offense is OT. This will put them within 1 point of Clemson for fifth. Zach Harrison is the only other high profile recruit I could find that they have a serious shot at. This is a really solid pick up for them.
AE, is that a friendly hello to all of us or is this some secret sign that good news is coming? Not that we aren't glad to see you :-P
Where you going Andrew?
Billy is trapped in a cave in at the old mine?
"Life's a garden, dig it." -Joe Dirt
Love it. We could really use some good news. Renardo Green is my guess.
Harrison in home today with TTUN?
Cross Renardo Green off the list. Without Urban, he’s sticking with his FSU pledge
Well there goes my guess. LOL
Ugh. Can’t imagine playing for willie Taggert
Still 2 weeks to talk to him.
FSU is such a dumpster fire, even with good players they're going to mess it up.
Maybe he just wants to have a practice free winter break when in college?
Free crab legs.
