Literally your best work. I've had that pinned to my twitter since last year. You're masterclass, Barf
Make preparations in advance. You never have trouble if you are prepared for it.
It is true MJ! That is amazing!! What a cool talent and skill Barf!!!
Hate, really hate to see/hear this! But it is very easy to understand. At least at face value.
Best of luck and best of health in the future Coach!!!
Beat everyone, in every sport, all the time!!!
Speechless Barf, just speechless......
Priceless, Shelley, priceless!
The relief. Stand by your man.
And then later after singing Carmen Ohio... the famous gif tweet by Jordan Strack of Urban and Shelley in an intimate moment:
Ua Mau ke Ea o ka 'Aina I ka Pono. The life of the land is preserved in righteousness. (Hawai'i state motto) Aloha nui kakou.
Someone, somehow PLEASE make sure Meyer sees this GIF...that would make his day.

Can I steal this?
I already have ... after the Michigan game .... thank you.

MICHIGAN STILL SUCKS
This just in: reaction from Washington head coach Chris Petersen:
This gif is amazing.

This might be the most upvotes on a post I've ever seen!
Priority #1: Beat Michigan
Huh, I figured Urban as more of a Mac guy.
Can you please make a pic of Paul Finbaum bending over and kissing Urbs hind end. The guy is a doucebag.
No he’s not. There is no doubt that he plays to his crowd, but much of what he has said is true. I’m not a Meyer fan and never will be, but I know that he is a elite coach and he will be missed by All of College Football. I wish you well coach.
Couldnt resist could you, troll?

I wish I could upvote this more than once.
War is the remedy our enemies have chosen, and I say let us give them all they want.
Your wish could come true if you have a computer and a phone...
I expect the same from Ryan Day, I hope he understand what TTUM is for us, that's my only concern.
16-2 is SWEET!
Whoever downvoted this should be banned, permanently.
Thank you Urban. I choose to believe the one down vote here was sausage fingers and not a moron.
You are entitled to you own opinion, not your own facts.
This actually made me laugh pretty hard. That's a good gif.
Not here to troll...Go Blue
We need one of him riding off into the sunset! He's earned it.

That's a thing of beauty Barf!! If you don't mind, I'm gonna copy that and plaster it everywhere! This will make my FB meatchicken friends want to vomit! O - H I - O! Go Bucks!!
Thanks for everything Coach, it's been a fantastic 7 year ride!!
I remember posting in the forum back in late August or early September the rumor that Day was "a coach in waiting".
I'm sorry it turned out to be true.
Love this coach and all he's done for us.
Ryan Day will be great.
But I will always miss Urban.

My favorite GIF. I’m literally in tears. Ain’t getting shit done st work today.
Where the hell did seven years go? I still remember reading that he was hired and excitedly waking up my mom, a big Buckeye fan, in the middle of the night for that. I got an "Urban Era Begins" shirt that Christmas as well. I might be crying later today as well. He will always be my favorite coach.
Number 1 rule in life: always beat That Team Up North.
Amen. The excitement I felt when I watched his hiring announcement live in 2011 was palpable, and I still remember it.
Thanks for the memories Coach, you are the best. Godspeed.
Yep. And I officially upvote every positive comment here. Hell of a run.
He's still my coach! Congratulations to Coach Meyer. Screw Michigan.
I think his tenure at Ohio State was worth it for this moment alone.
The ride was wild. he put Ohio State on top of the world for a while. Only thing that sux about the story is that waaaaaaaaay too many people knew this was being cooked up throughout the season. I hate when dozens of early reports this happening, and we trot up in front of everyone and deny deny deny. You can’t say you haven’t had discussions about it, when you obviously have been. I guess when there’s smoke, there’s fire. But the show goes on. Ohio State will continue to stay near the top.
Thanks for everything. You took care of business. 7-0 baby #OH
Can we please get an 11W "7 and 0H" Urban shirt?!
I would like to pre-order
I'll private message you my address where you can mail the $50 check! I also accept cash, money orders, or beer! Haha
Is it OK to give you $50 worth of Burger Beer? When my grandpa passed, he had 434 cases stashed in his shed.
“The best executive is the one who has sense enough to pick good men to do what he wants done, and self-restraint enough to keep from meddling with them while they do it.” – Theodore Roosevelt
I begrudgingly accept and will give that beer a good home. Well...rental property, anyway! Haha
Ironically, 434 cases of Burger beer is worth exactly $50.
7-0 against TTUN, a national title, and an improved presence in the NFL is one hell of a legacy. Love you Urban, thanks for everything.
Legends never die.
Especially Urban Legends...
Thank you for everything.
Noooooooooooo! Thanks for the best years in Ohio State Football history coach!
Thanks for the great run coach! You are a Buckeye LEGEND!
Take care of yourself first.
Well that really is a nut punch
need to keep this class together
Stay golden, Ponyboy.
Thank you Urban for all you’ve done not only for the football program but for all the players lives you’ve impacted. You will be missed.
Just posting and hoping my comment isn’t deleted.
Thanks for the memories Coach Meyer. The next coach has huge shoes to fill.

I am sad.
Yeah. I was looking around all the other posts and was like "damn, I'm taking this harder than others"
"The hate of men will pass, and dictators die, and the power they took from the people will return to the people. And so long as men die, liberty will never perish" - Charlie Chaplin
I've criticized him and some of his methods a lot, but I find myself sad too. Wishing the best for him, and I hope he stays connected with the university as toward the end, the article mentions as a possibility. Thanks, Coach. Good luck to Coach Day.
We've already got Real Life Wednesdays. How about Urban Meyer Thursdays?
My favorite team? Whoever is playing TTUN.
Maybe when he is healthy and missing the athletes, he can come back as a recruiting assistant or even director of football recruiting.
What's round on the ends and high in the middle? Tell me if you know!

I believe the first in 73 years.
Football or basketball.
Winning is a habit. Unfortunately, so is losing.
Is he though, or was this the deal with the board from the beginning of the season?
GO BUCKS!!! *ichigan sucks!!!
Let Meatchicken Beat Meatchicken!!!!
Oh my God, fan obsession with the stupid fucking award.
I hate the offseason.
7-0 vs TTUN will hopefully be bested by Ryan Day!! Until that happens, Urban will forever wear the crown!!
Was a great 7 years, thank you Coach!! Hopefully the boys will send him out right.
Looking forward to seeing what Ryan Day can do with this program. Hopefully with his up-tempo, air raid type system... it doesn't turn our D into a Big 12/Pac 12 type. Keep the balance, baby! O-H
THANKS, KUDOS, UV'S...Coach & Shelley Meyer for pouring all your heart, mind, & soul into tOSU.
And for every "elite" example of MVP Div. 1 football to all your staff, & ballr's.
You kept Buckeye football for us diehards on Top against the skunk weasels 7-0.
Buck Nation has your back Coach Day !
Oh - I am pretty sure the team does. I already feel sorry for Washington. They just stepped into a hornet's nest.
Thos 4 points are looking pretty sweet right now
Very sad way to start off Tuesday. Appreciate all Coach Meyer has done for the university. Will throw my full support behind Coach Day. Here’s hoping he does great things. Go Bucks!!
If you’re lucky enough to be a Buckeye you’re lucky enough.
Damn..no words..thanks for everything!
Thank you, Urban! I’ve never enjoyed being a Buckeye fan more than these past seven years. Good luck in your future endeavors. Always a Buckeye!
"The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing." - Edmund Burke
Awesome ride. Now lets have Day pull a Lincoln Riley and unleash hell on college football
I worry that Ryan Day May be the wrong choice, not because he isn’t an outstanding coach but because he’s not an “Ohio Guy”. I remember the Cooper years all too well. He wasn’t an Ohio guy and couldn’t win against Michigan. And look at the coaches Michigan hired who weren’t Michigan men.
Harbaugh is a “Michigan man” and is 0-4 against OSU.
YOU SIT THERE AND YOU THUMP YOUR BIBLE AND YOU SAY YOUR PRAYERS AND IT DIDN'T GET YOU ANYWHERE!!! TALK ABOUT YOUR PSALMS TALK ABOUT JOHN 3:16.... AUSTIN 3:16 SAYS I JUST WHIPPED YOUR ASS!!!!!

But just like Bo (who never won a NC), he’s from Ohio. That’s what UM has never figured out.

We arent michigan.
I bleed scarlet...literally
Dude, Saban is from West Virginia, Swinney is from and played at Alabama, Riley is from TX. Just find a good coach who can recruit.
I would hope after being at OSU a few years Day has figured out the importance of The Game.
Bears...Buckeyes... Battlestar Galactica.
Day hasn't even been at OSU 2 full years. I hope he can step in and keep the train rolling but it's definitely high risk / high reward with Day
I'm a Buckeye born, I'm a Buckeye bred, and when I die I will be a Buckeye dead.
Yea but after Cooper every future HC knows he’ll get fired if he doesn’t beat Michigan often enough.
Well in a few years we will have Vrabel available if we need him :-)
"Captain, over here, I've found someth... AHHHH!!!!!!"
Eh. No thanks. NFL coach, yes! College coach.....no. Ask the kids who used to play for Vrabel. Next....
And a great thank you, to Urban Meyer!!! Not going to lie...it's going to be tough to focus at work today.
I don't know... our LB's played a hell of a lot better under him!
I thought V coached DL?
Then what did Larry Johnson do?
LJ didn't get here until 2014. He was under BOB at PSU when Urban first got here.
What did the kids who used to play for Vrabel say?
I think Fickel would be the guy in a few years if Day doesn’t work out, not Vrabel
Its good to have options :-)
Imagine if you were down to just Harbaugh and had no where else to go when that didn't work out for ya!
Matt Campbell will be the next Coach if Day doesn't work out.
"Woody is a God-fearing man. It's good to know that he's afraid of somebody."
You can say that again.
I was listening to 105.7 online and heard the news first there. Clicked over here and saw Day announced HC. I'm very unsure about that as well. Hopefully he shows worthy of being the HC at the Best Damn University in The Land. Ohio against the world!
"I love football. I think it is most wonderful game in world and I despise to lose."
Woody Hayes 1913 - 1987
Seriously right.....you're not even going to talk to anyone else?
I feel he showed his worthiness during the first three games this season. I believe in Mr. Day.
He’ll be fine. He’s an Ohio man now like it or not.
If you die before you die, then you won't die when you die.
Congratulations coach Day! Now gut the defensive staff!!
And don't hire buddies...hire great coaches.
"Great moments are born from great opportunities." - Herb Brooks
Yeah, be nice but it wouldn't surprise me if he retires. But, yes by all means it would be great if he stayed
Fred Flintstone was a Michigan Man. How did that work out.
Hire the best. Day understands the rivalry.
Hey Hoke had more success against OSU than rich rod or Harbaugh. Show some respect.
Hoke was born in Kettering.
Fred Flinstone worked out pretty great for Ohio State.
Is that why we now have Tuf "Barney Rubble" Borland at LB? I'm pretty sure it's those short little caveman legs that make him so slow.
My concern re: Day is actually very different. I think he’ll be successful, but he’s an NFL guy that will probably jump at the first chance he gets to be HC in the League.
"Always bear in mind that your own resolution to succeed, is more important than any other one thing." - Abraham Lincoln
He was actually the finalist and offered the offense of coordinators job for the Titans last year and turn it down
OC is very different from HC. He could have seen that his best path to NFL HC was staying at OSU was still his quickest path to HC.
Best path to an NFL HC was to turn down an NFL OC job and remain a co-OC at a college? Not sure I follow that logic.
They aren't naming him HC to watch him jump to the pros in a few years.
Maybe, maybe not. With what college coaches at the top programs are paid these days there is little financial incentive to go to the NFL. The pressure in the NFL is no less then at a top college program and the bar for what is expected is actually a bit lower in college than the NFL. Most NFL coaches eventually get fired for not winning Super Bowls, but college coaches do not get fired for not winning National Championships. There are expectations, but more along the lines of winning a respectable number of league championships and rivalry games. The real issue is how does he feel about recruiting. If he doesn't want to spend his time selling the program to teenagers and their parents then the NFL is where he belongs. If he likes recruiting and is successful at it college has many advantages.
Well he would have to have some stellar years at OSU to be considered for an NFL head coaching job...I'd take that.
But Ryan Day has been in the program for the past 2 seasons. He has seen how Meyer prepares for The Game. He knows how important it is.
IMHO Day is not Cooper. Unlike Coop, Day has been around Ohio State for a few years now, and has been indoctrinated into the rivalry and the utmost importance of The Game. He's seen first hand, up close how crucial that match-up is. And given what he got the offense to do this year in The Game, I'd say he understands it well enough.
the buckeyes are screwed
i logged in just to downvote this
I logged in just to upvote you....since his was downvoted into oblivion.
The down vote is a mighty tool. Use it on idiots, not differing opinions.
the buckeyes Washington Huskies are screwed
Cooper came directly in from coaching another program with no stops near Columbus. Day has been entrenched in buying into the program for 2 years under Meyer. His family absolutely loves Columbus and the OSU fans and support (know first hand). Two totally different situations.
Im with you 100%. Ohio guys with Ohio State ties has done the best against michigan. But im not Gene Smith so ill trust in his decision. Hopefully Coach Meyer stays around and is a part of the university.
Here we go. Welcome to the top, Coach Day. The guns are already aimed at ya.
Lol Ohio guy. Yes, let's subscribe to the exact thinking that has failed time and again for our rival. Great idea
Wow, downvoted into oblivion for expressing a concern? What has happened to the commentariat on this site? Jeez.
I mean, I didn't downvote the guy, but it is probably because the comment added nothing of value whatsoever.
"It all goes so fast, and character makes the difference when it's close."
Lol the guy you responded to was "the guy" with the original comment. And I agree with your comment.

You deserved more down votes for trying to make "Ohio guy" happen.
Day has been on the staff for two years......that makes him an 'Ohio Guy'
The pain of discipline or the pain of regret, take your pick
Who do you think called the plays for 62-39 ?
Well on the bright side, Bill Davis will be gone too.

Literally the most positive news of the morning!
Does his daughter babysit Ryan Day’s kids? If so, uh oh
Davis gone but what about Schiano, Grinch, Taver and Studs? Hopefully Hartline interim tag is removed. Keeping Larry Johnson is key.
So you think removing 5 Assistants for a first-time Head Coach is a good idea? That's a recipe for disaster.
I’m rooting for Day, but I’m a little nervous about a guy with so little HC experience.
Can't get better than undefeated...
I'd rather be an hour early than a minute late.
Three games. And he had the luxury of Nick Bosa on the defensive line.
"If you're not changing, you're falling behind."
FUUUUUUUUCK. Fucking McMurphy you know without that prick this wouldn't be happening.
We're losing one of the best coaches in history and replacing him with someone who has never been a HC for a full season, does that seem strange to anyone?
It’s a head scratcher, it might be to keep the recruiting class intact?
Day won’t even be able to make staff changes until after the season and I have no clue who he’d retain or replace, nor with whom.
Hopefully Schiano gets a new gig ASAP leaving before the bowl game and takes Davis with him
FUUUUUUUUCK. Fucking McMurphy you know without that prick this wouldn't be happening.
McMurphy sucks, but he didn't put a cyst on Urban's brain.
I don't believe in no-win scenarios
This..................^^^^^^^^^^^^............glad someone lives in the real world.
Saban on a cart eating cold pizza
You really think it's the cyst? Okay 2020 when UM is announced at ND remember you thought it was a cyst that is benign and can be drained/or removed by then.
I will be glad to recall that you ended up being wrong.......
Seeing as Brian Kelly has his team in the Playoffs, why would they hire Urban? He'd have to massively fail (which is possible) and then tank hilariously bad next season for that to happen.
Your signature will be publicly displayed at the end of your comments.
Considering he's about to get humiliated on a national stage, again. I'd say his seat will be a but warm. Keep in mind hot seats are affected by who is available to replace.
Jesus he is not going to ND...I'll throw $1000 on it now, we can exchange contact information, and in 2020 you can pay for my kids Christmas.
I wouldn’t be surprised to see Urban become an HC at ND in a couple of seasons.
Always and forever, Go Bucks!
I have family on the staff. Urban's health is actually pretty bad. Cyst is almost the size of a baseball. While the ZS deal didn't help matters I believe he would still be HC if not for possible brain surgery.
Directed at Kirok.
So, you’re a brain surgeon? Don’t talk about things you don’t understand.
I guess I missed the part where I claimed to be, it has been reported that it is benign and has already been drained in the past. Some peoples kids.
So let's say you are right, he has brain surgery and makes a full recovery and three years later he is fully recovered.
Guess what, he still won't even be 60. You really think ND doesn't give him a call?
The cyst is inoperable. It can not be drained again. The best prognosis is to manage it with medicine and avoid stress.
You never get a second chance to make the first impression
You don't know that
But he did add to UFM’s stress so, in general, I’m ok with the F*ck McMurphy sentiment
McMurphy put the cyst in Urban's brain? Man, I really hate that guy now!
Total dick move.
Now this is funny. Upvoted to counteract the DV that baffles me....
"They say, "these geeks come a dime a dozen. I'm lookin' for the guy who's supplyin' the dimes." -Classy Freddie Blassie
No, but McMurphy put some garbage in a lot of people’s brains. And that garbage made Urban’s last year at Ohio State highly stressful and anguishing. You know what McMurphy can go do . . .
Put a cyst in his own brain?
Obviously he didn't but you'd have to be brain dead to think that the pressure and stress that the McMurphy situation put on Urban didn't affect him. It could very well have caused it to get worse. Urban went through hell while the press spewed calumny after calumny towards him. Wouldn't wish that on my worst enemy.
Given what Oklahoma and Georgia did to fill their most recent vacancies, no, this does not seem strange. Sometimes internal promotions work out very well, sometimes not. Day knows the program and is ready to be a HC-he is certainly a better choice than Matt Campbell.
I'd remember some of the same things were said about Tressel when I was in college. Why are we taking a DII coach. Worked out alright. I'm not saying Day will be Urban Meyer but he performed well in the off season and got us through the first 4 games unscathed. I'm not sure of a better option at the moment.
Would anyone really prefer Matt Campbell to Ryan Day. I'd say that's a toss up and Day is already familiar with the program and recruits.
you did see what the offense did this year with ryan day in charge of it, didn't you? i have no issue with ryan day.
No way to know this. The man has a cyst from 1998 that is causing head aches, and health comes first.
I say it's more on the TOSU, they could have come out in support of coach Meyer instead of letting him twist in wind and allow the media to do what they did. TOSU is afraid of its own shadow. Like a bandage just rip it off and get it over with.
THANK YOU COACH! What a ride it was. Cue the national media screaming about him lying about coaching next year.
He will coach next year.
He never said how many he would coach, just that he intended to coach.
Buckeye born, Buckeye bred, and when I die, I'll be Buckeye dead.
Thank you, Urban.
I, as will the rest of Buckeye nation, will be forever grateful for everything you've done for us.
I hate to see him go, but there’s no one more deserving to see a career of success from the relaxation of home. Thanks for all you’ve done coach, once a Buckeye always a Buckeye.
Day is going to have some really big shoes to fill. Love his offense, but we likely lose Haskins to the draft. Not so certain about his game management, Oregon State - Rutgers - TCU aren’t exactly overflowing with talent and master-tactician coaches. Hope he’s ready to really commit and fully immerse himself in all things Ohio.
Hope the recruitment classes can stay more-or-less intact and there’s no program dropoff.
Coaching against Gary Patterson in Texas is a pretty big job interview.
Damn, that sucks.

Hope the 11W servers had their Wheaties for breakfast.
Ring the f**king bell, you pansy
Lol, let's hope
I hope Jason sends the Mods Starbucks gift cards, stat. Gonna be a long day.
Thank you for everything Coach!
I hope he wears a 41-14 Florida T shirt and gives the Board of Trustees the bird on the way out
They deserve one....
Yep, Urban should go all Marcus Hall on them on the way out.
That'd be awesome. Too bad he's a class act. Lol
Pretty sure the majority of the BoT actually fought to keep Coach Meyer here.
We will never know the actual machinations of the whole ZS, UFM, BOT, and Drake saga. However my gut tells me the overriding background issue was who controlled the brand of the University: academics or football.
Too much time spent at the North Heidelberg rather than the classroom. SSD 68-72

"Anything easy ain't worth a damn!" -Woody Hayes
Thanks for everything coach. No matter what the naysayers believe, you did an amazing job not only on the field, but off of the field as well. Ohio is proud to have had you.
Not a shock to anyone who’s really watched him this year, especially after seeing him refuse to commit to a return so many times and watching Shelley just lose it after the UM game. He gave us a lot of great memories and killed it in recruiting, in the B1G, in The Game, and provided us with a storybook 2014 season. Hate to see it end like this, with McMurphy seemingly getting the W.
I hope he receives successful treatment for his cyst and is able to get fully healthy. Day is an NFL guy who could eventually bolt for an HC opportunity there, so I’ll remaun ridiculously optimistic that maybe Meyer can return to OSU then...(yes, I know that’s ridiculous!)
Most likely it is. And I hope Coach Day works out as a long term many, many national championship Coach.
But if not, bring back Coach Meyer, he will still be young. Also hoping they have a place for him in the AD office. If not, that likely speaks volumes!
Thanks Urban! I selfishly wanted him and Dwayne for next season to get another run at a title, but oh well.
"Ice! It's in my veins!" - D'Angelo Russell
On the bright side, Day has proven himself to be a QB guru. At least he’ll be around to train Dwayne’s replacement (probably Tate).
Hopefully someone else... been so nice watching a passing quarterback
Didn’t like Urban prior to being in Columbus. Thought he came off as an arrogant jerk. Did a total 180(especially during this last trial). Here is hoping he stays with the OSU family.
Lets see if Day is the next Lincoln Riley......he better be
In Antoine Winfield I trust
Here is hoping he stays with the OSU family.
I’m sure this won’t be popular, but I think there’s no way he stays off the sideline. He’ll be back to coaching (if I was a betting man, ND or USC) by 2020, maybe 2021 at the latest.
Nah. Hes goin fishin Micanopy.
Because ND is in a hurry to fire a coach who has had two undefeated regular seasons in this decade? That hasn’t happened since Leahy was coaching there in the 40’s or 50’s. The odds of them firing Kelly are slim and none.
I don’t see a college program with any notion of long-term success hire a 54 coach that has health issues. He literally keeled over on the sidelines guys.
I think there’s a better chance he takes over a pro team , which I believe would be a different sort of stress that could be more manageable
Right. It's not like this is the first time he has retired for health reasons either.
I’m not talking about ND firing Kelly. I’m talking about the interest that Kelly will draw from the NFL.
You realize he’s older than Meyer, right?
7-0 against our rival !!!!
Life long fan of... The!
Man. What a ride
Thanks coach. Sorry to see you leave so soon.
I know there's a game Saturday, and my ass will be there.
I Believe In Ohio State.
7-0 against the dark side!!!!!
What will the recruits think?
Garrett has said he wants to play for Day FWIW. Well see if they changes without Urban tho.
Will always love what Urban brought to our school....Great wonderful ride!
This will be the first orderly coaching transition in my lifetime....Woody was coaching when I was born.
O-H I-O !!!
He’s been a once in a lifetime coach. Thanks for the incredible ride, coach! Enjoy your family and look after your health, not under the impossible microscope that you have been. Cheers coach.
Braving the long dark of the offseason
Great ride despite all the negative attention and attitude towards our Bucks. Take care coach you will be sorely missed by this fan.
"Old minds are like old horses; you must exercise them if you wish to keep them in working order."
The hate towards OSU football has been there for as long as I can remember. It did intensity under Urban but that's because he was so good and elevated the program. OSU is college footballs villains and that's not going to change just because Urban is leaving. The only way that hate will lessen is if the program hits a slump and starts losing multiple games per season.
Urban Meyer >Jim Harbaugh for ever and ever, Amen. 0
Man. I thought he had a couple of years.
So grateful to have Tress followed by Meyer. We have no idea how blessed we are. Can’t lie I’m sad.
But why make ESPN prophets here? I don’t know. None of my business.
Ignoring the 1 Fickell year as an aberration due to his interim status and all the drama and lost players that year,
Since Tressel got hired, in those 17 season, we have beaten UM 16 times, won 2 National Titles, won 11 BIG Titles, had a 191-30 record over all and a 120-18 record in conference.
We played in 2 other national title games and made the playoffs another.
We had 2 undefeated seasons
If we win the Rose Bowl we will have 12 Top 5 AP rankings in those 17 years, another 2 in the top 10 and only 1 year unranked (Tressel's first)
We will have 11 post season wins against only 6 losses, in Big 6 bowls we will have a record of 10-5
Golden era indeed,,
Here is to Day carrying that tradition on!!!
Go Bucks and Good Luck in the future Coach Meyer!!!
As someone who started college when the vest took over, I'll forever be in awe of what THE Ohio State University has become in the football world. Growing up learning curse words from my dad yelling at Cooper and how horrible he was, we have been super lucky to have such an amazing run. Can't wait to see Day continue this tradition of refilling the great lakes with the tears from ttun fans
OSU has been a national power since the mid 20th century. They had a few rough stretches here and there but when you look at the historical data since post ww2, OSU is the top, or very near the top in just about every meaningful measurement of a football program.
We have all witnessed the golden era of OSU football. Poor Ryan Day has the job of replacing the greatest coach of all time. Here is to him doing just as well or even possibly getting more championships. The cupboards are full. Hopefully we don't lose too many commits.
Committee could've had the final Urban-Saban matchup, but Lincoln Riley is cool too.
Thanks Urban. You elevated this team, the Big Ten and college football in general. You also set us up with a successor that knows the importance of being a Buckeye. Now go out with a Rose Bowl win!
Best wishes and thank you for everything! Go Buckeyes.
Urban Meyer = Legend
It’s not 5 am on the West Coast. For some reason, I am wide awake, so I pickup my phone. I think I am far too vested in this sport, when the reverberations of the cosmos thrusts me awake like this!
Urban, you were too good for us. Buckeye Nation wishes you health and happiness, wherever life takes you.
Take you rightful place on Mount Rushmore, coach! Thank you so much for all you've done here.
Fields of Dreams
Now we know what Bosa must have known.
Bosa...tore his an muscle on purpose?
Godspeed, Coach. Riding off into the sunset with a national championship and 7-0 over TTUN. It's funny how time has a way of blending together, but when I think back, it's crazy how continuing excellence has become such a norm under Coach's leadership. Every Saturday the enemy would give us their very best shot, and usually it would end up not mattering. That's how you know a true winner.
Thanks, for everything.
-Ohio Against The World-
Thanks for everything, coach!
Ignorance isn't bliss for the rest of us.
During the Zach Smith debacle, the University likely told Meyer..."Look, we want to allow you to keep your legacy in tact. Rather than fire you, we will allow you to finish the season...but we expect that you'll step down at the end of the year". This explains his apparently anger/frustration at the press conference when his suspension was announced.
sorry, but I don't think that's even close to being accurate. My opinion.
Just speculation. I'm not trying to sound like a know-it-all. It's hard to believe that the Zach Smith situation doesn't have at least SOMETHING to do with this.
I am sure the Z Smith episode played a part in this decision but not likely this way.
Firing Smith, a family friend and possibly Davis this off season can weight heavy on someone, it is not easy to do.
His health certainly has played a part and I sure the stress this year has made that worse as we have visibly seen on the sidelines this year.
So sure it is a contributing factor but no way was there a "gentlemens agreement" between the board and President and Urban to resign
I think the anger and frustration was that he was getting suspended at all.
I have to wonder if he's as sick at they were trying to make him sound. If he has to undergo brain surgery more serious than just draining that cyst when draining the cyst is already very serious.
Well, he obviously isn’t leaving because he’s afraid of Jim Harbaugh (or Scott Frost, James Franklin, PJ Fleck, Jeff Brohm, etc). It is, however, more than a bit convenient that a serious chronic health condition about which none of us ever knew happened to arise when relations between Urban and OSU leadership became strained. I’m not saying that the cyst isn’t real, but I have a funny feeling that this departure is more about Urban’s perception of betrayal by Drake, Gene and the BoT over his suspension than it is his health. I’ll come out and say it: he decided to leave OSU the moment he that was suspended in August, but he finished out the year for the sake of his players. Don’t be surprised if he’s suddenly feeling much better in a year or two when USC or another high-profile coaching job opens up.
That cyst draining procedure was talked about prior to this year. JBook brought this up on Twitter when this surfaced again this season.
It is, however, more than a bit convenient that a serious chronic health condition about which none of us ever knew happened to arise when relations between Urban and OSU leadership became strained
except for this from 2014: https://bleacherreport.com/articles/1980142-urban-meyer-underwent-medica...
We'll find out the whole story this afternoon. Sure it could be the non-sense from the pre-season.
But going with his health. You don't take a leave of absence from a job like Head Coach at OSU. If he's looking at needing the cyst removed or if it isn't the sort of growth they thought it was there could be significant complications and recovery time for that. He could make a full recovery and go back to coaching as you say but you don't take a year off from a place like OSU and come back.
My sentiments EXACTLY. This is a classy way to exit, yet still sport the middle finger to those that deserve it on the way out.
Except if stepped down in July he could have negotiated a large piece of his $38m buyout to bring with him. He’s technically not entitled to anything now.
Yea, it seemed fairly likely it would play out like this.
We will never know but that scenario is one of the plausible ways this could have gone down.
I don’t think the President and board wanted him to leave, but I do think the shitty way he was treated by them played a huge role in this decision.
This is a great discussion for another time and another place.
Nah. I do think that Urban was possibly planning on stepping down at the end of this season anyway and when the McDickbag scandal broke he had to fight to keep his job so it didn't look like the scandal was the reason he was stepping down. Legacy
Well that's one way to avoid firing Billy Davis. :-\
Never before in the history of man have lives less lived been more chronicled. - Dennis Miller
Needed that one, thanks!
Is there a reason LF, didn't get a look?
I am with you here, man. Just chatting with a co-worker about being so quick to anoint Day without looking at Fickell or Vrabel for that matter - or much of a search at all, as it would seem.
Fick will get his chance. I don’t think Day is a lifer .
So because he stood there when everyone else ran he's forever dog shit? If Michigan fires harbaugh next year (my theory) we might regret blowing fickell off he's seems to have grown and learned quite a bit since then.
I was mostly joking. But I think they want to keep the recruiting classes intact as much as possible.
Let's not forget that our starting qb left, and we had 6 other players suspended, one of which was our star receiver who missed like 12 games (for less than $10 of being overpaid for summer work). Fickell also didn't have the luxury of being able to hire/fire coaches during that span, so don't think he would have retained Bollman and company had he been the actual head coach. And yet we still almost beat Michigan that year.
What he is doing in Cincinnati is impressive and I believe he would have tremendous success if he were brought back.
Because Ryan Day is a better candidate for the job and has a better chance of keeping our recruits on board. I don’t doubt Luke’s Buckeye bona fides or his love for the university, but his ceiling as a head coach is Pat Narduzzi. We can do better than that, IMO.
Pat Narduzzi best season is 8 wins. Luke's best is 10 wins. WTF are you talking about saying Pat is Luke's "ceiling" when he is already above him?
Who is blue, fast and likes rangs? The Dankey Kang.
All of Narduzzi's seasons as head coach have been at Pitt. It's considerably tougher to get 10 wins in the ACC than in the AAC. I have nothing against Luke personally, but if you take the scarlet-colored glasses off for a minute, he's a great DC who isn't anything special as a HC. That's what I meant with the Narduzzi comparison.
No one is special until they do something special and Luke has been a HC for 1 full year. I may be wearing S&G glasses but you are declaring him to be "nothing special" based on what? He didn't take the mess Tuberville left behind to a 13-0 record last year? He didn't win the Natty during the interregnum at Ohio State? I don't see what you are seeing because there are NO DATA POINTS to see at all. The facts are this, Fickle has UC trending up while Narduzzi has Pitt flat. Based on this I find your claim that Narduzzi is Fickle's ceiling to be unfounded because he is already producing better results.
As for saying it's tougher in the ACC than the AAC? Sounds a lot like the naysaying that discounted Tressel's coaching experience.
One of us is right... time will tell.
Agreed Littlefinger knows that chaos is a ladder, but he's to vulnerable when it comes to young ladies.
*Cues Goodbye My Lover*
Forever and always, Go Bucks!
Thank you Urban.
Thamel article says Day plans to keep Coach Mick, Stamper, Pantoni etc so that the infrastructure stays consistent. Hopefully that eases the transition and recruiting.
I want a fall Saturday in Ohio Stadium..
Seeing he's going to keep Marotti, Pantoni and the others definitely makes me feel better about avoiding regression.
Please hire Urban Meyer as your Recruiting Director.
I hope to god we can hold onto Coach Larry J too!
Of all the position coaches this is the one that needs to stay!
Words fail me on this one. Wow. Just wow. I guess Coach Meyer is actually as sick as they've been making him out to be?
The man is a straight up Legend. Thanks for everything, Mr Meyer.
I'm not going to lie, I'm totally heart broken. Coach Meyer was nothing short of the most perfect coach to replace Jim Tressel when he stepped down. Man, this is a tough one.
And this is in no way a bemoaning of the selection of Coach Day, quite the opposite, I was impressed with him during his 3 game run this year.
Coach Meyer was the only guy that could've taken this team over in 2012. Much respect, much love, and much gratitude to you coach Meyer. Go Buckeyes!
Urban Meyer left an incredible legacy. 12/4/18 Ryan Day begins his.
Why Coach?! I didn’t want to believe it all season.
I hope you are going out on your own terms!
Thanks for making the great state of Ohio proud!
I season my simple food with hunger
It’s been an amazing run. Thank you for everything. 7-0 against Michigan. Unparalleled recruiting of high caliber players. And as a guy stuck in SEC country, thank you most of all for 85 Yards Through the Heart of the South. You and your family have our thanks.
How firm thy friendship
Day is in the unenviable position of replacing (let's face it) a legend. That almost never works out well. Here's hoping the team will galvanize around him, that recruits will see his successes and want to be a part of the future at Ohio State, and that Michigan will continue to be snake-bitten against us.
Thank you, Coach Meyer. Thank you for everything.
I aim to misbehave.
Lincoln Riley has done ok replacing Stoops. Let’s hope we have that same fortune.
And the Sooners had little to no warning about Stoops leaving at the beginning of that season, if I recall correctly. At least we know now instead of August.
Thanks for your best coach.
Go for 3.
I'm literally choked up right now. Good luck Coach. Thank you so much for your years. You are a legend. O ! H !
Thank you Coach Meyer
Beat Michigan 7 years in a row
Go Buckeyes Beat Michigan
Thanks, Urban! It's been a great run. I think Day hits the ground running and we don't skip a beat. It will be interesting to see who we retain on the staff.
Must of been love, but its oooooooover nooowww......
"Life is not about how hard you can hit, it's about how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward. THATS HOW WINNING IS DONE!!" - Rocky Ballboa
Thanks Urban, what a run. When the only real complaint we have as a fanbase is that we didn't win even MORE national titles, that's a job well done. The Buckeyes need to send him out a winner and keep those losses in the single digits as the coach of OSU.
I'm pretty devastated over here to be honest. But as always...
Thanks 7 great years. The best span in school history. A great coach and regardless of what the media says he ran the program with class. Best wishes and I hope the boys send you out on top!
Wow. I knew it was probably coming after the Michigan game when Shelley lost it but damn I'm still speechless
My mind said it was over too. But my heart will never accept it. Urban Meyer weasel slayer, recruit whisperer, and greatest buckeye coach ever.
E+R=O Great coach, great culture, Brotherhood. Thanks coach. Welcome Ryan Day. Go Bucks. Haters and BM are loving this. Ohio against the world.
Urban, thanks for 7 great years. Go take care of yourself and your family.
Thank you Urban. You deserve all the best in retirement.
The only coach that could follow the man that ended our Cooper misery. Thank you coach for the great run.
All the best to Urban and his family. He has more important things to deal with now, like his health. Shame to hear and shame to have it come to an end. It was bound to happen, might as well be now. Thanks Coach!
It's not a lie if YOU believe it
Don’t like the replacement. Hope I’m proved wrong
Why don't you like Ryan Day?
Probably because he's not Urban Meyer......
Sorry, Ohio State is not a place for “on the job training.” This is a high profile place to coach and three games he coached isn’t enough to know if he is the right option. Open the job up and get a high profile coach.
Yeah we could get this great guy from up in Michigan, Him Jarbaugh I think is his name... good fellow, a little mercurial, sleeps with recruits... but solid guy!
can't believe you were overlooked by the hiring committee!
Great Coach and many great wins over ttun…..
Enjoying daily the 62-39 ttun beatdown.
Thank you Coach for the memories and years of domination. Took us to new heights and now it is time to see what Day can do with the keys. Good luck and I hope you remain around the program and university in some capacity.
Earle’s target practice
Thanks Coach!! You'll always be a Buckeye!!
The juice is worth the squeeze
An unbelievable run.
Harbaugh when he realizes most of the staff and team will still be here next year.
He’s probably excited to be 0-0 against the OSU coach now.
Coach Day says hold my beer.
Thanks for everything, Urban!
Screw the media.
i am crushed

I think this speaks for itself.
This reminds me of an article a year or so ago mentioning that the lowest Urban has ever finished in conference is a tie for 1st place in division. That's ridiculous.
I like to bet on horse races every now and then. The above chart reminds me of the past performances you will see from elite, super stud, graded stakes racing champions that finish every race in the money. If this horse were running again in the next race, I would have plunked some money down on him. Sad to see this champ retire.
Not surprised. Dont think most people believed him when he said he'd return next year, especially with all the speculation going around.
What a ride though. Thank you Coach for everything, you made the great state of Ohio proud for sure. Refreshing to see a Buckeye coach leave on his terms for once.
Refreshing to see a Buckeye coach leave on his terms for once.
I get what you are saying, but I am not sure it is true. I don't believe these are really the terms Meyer would prefer to go out on.
Dear Coach; after sitting here listening to all the cheers coming from the state of Michigan (Best Part of Michigan is still under water), I just heard the news, and my heart sank, just as it did all those years ago, at the ludicrous way the Coach Earle Bruce was fired, and in the same lines, I feel Drake has something to do with this, BUT due to all the secrecy of this season, I cannot help but believe facts that have been thrown around all season...…… and I have to believe had you made this announcement on Saturday night, the Buckeyes would have been in the playoffs !
But all in all it has been a great few years ! and I will cry tomorrow, for what we will miss today !
You have been a great recruiter, an outstanding father, and a proud grandpa, our loss is your families gain..... as my heart is broken, as a Buckeye, for the years you have given us...……. THANK YOU FROM MY SOUL
End of an Era?!
He left the program better than he found it, despite the nearly impossible odds to do so. Here's hoping the staff is able to keep the momentum going on and off the field.
Trust me! I'm an Engineer.
In before the zach smith conspiracy theorists take over.
Enjoy your retirement Coach Meyer, and focus on your health and family. Grateful to him for restoring the football program to a lofty position and his domination of our rival. Coach Day has learned from a master, but he immediately needs to make some difficult decisions about the coaching staff.....especially on defense.
Thank you for everything you have done for this University coach.
Mark May is a mental midget
Many thanks to Coach Meyer for all that you have done for Ohio State.
Gene Smith and the OSU president should be shown the door for accelerating this timeline.
Guess Herman got his wish when he started all the ZS crap last Summer.
I was still hurting from the CFP snub putting in nd over TOSU. And now this. If the cyst is the reason I wish him well and God Speed. If it was this ZS and BM shit, I blame that pos drake and the bot. Drake and the bot screwed Coach over. Rather than stand up for him and have his back, they stuck a knife in it. No matter, drake and the bot need to be replaced ASAP. Day will probably be okay but he needs to surround himself with Ohio Men. By the time Day is ready to jump to the NFL an Ohio Man should ready to take over.
This was not even close to a discussion in July.
I definitely put part of this on Drake. He did not show appropriate support for Urban through the Zach Smith deal, and I disagreed with the additional week and 3 game suspension based on the stated findings in the report.
I want Drake gone, and believe alums should withhold donating to the university until he leaves.
Careful anything other than the cyst is deemed conspiratorial here. When not if but when he coaches again I'll be here to watch a couple of smug jerks on this site eat crow.
Thank you for everything Coach. It was a wild ride with (mostly) ups and (very few) downs but you came away with 7 winning seasons, several B1G titles, several bowl wins, a natty, and undefeated against Michigan. Thrashing Notre Dame, Alabama, Oregon, and Michigan over the years made for some amazing experiences. I only hope we can avenge you against Clemson some day soon.
Fighting the good fight in SEC country. "Our honor defend"
Good for him, ride off into the sunset knowing you left the program in better shape than you found it.
Hoping we have Coach Day for 20 yrs.
The offseason is the longest season.
This spineless bastard should be next
A true and honorable man. Made mistakes? Sure. Just like EVERYONE else has. But he is fighter and a competitor. We were so fortunate to have him at THE Ohio State. He deserves to go out on his own and take care of family.
And screw the haters.
OOops...hit it twice I gues. But Urban deserves it !
Please pay LJ as a head coach and do anything to keep him!
Washington, you're going to have a very bad day on Jan. 1st...
The Washington coaching staff after they heard the news:
Also, thanks Coach, and best of luck in whatever comes next.
But the truth is, the world is so much stranger than that. So much darker. And so much madder. And so much better. -Dr. Who, "Love and Monsters"
i am not a doomsday guy but Day sure has some shoes to fill. Tween Tress and Urbs we have finished no worse than tied for our division 13 straight seasons. I am also not a National championship or bust kind of guy. i am a lets win every Saturday guy and man have we had a boat load of happy Saturdays. NEXT MAN UP!
Keep Larry Johnson!!!!!!
Hey Lou Holts! Take a good look at Ryan Day! That’s what a man with a backbone looks like!! (Just hope he’s not a 9-3 Earle...)
Thanks for everything, Coach!
"Because the rules won't let you go for three." - Woody Hayes
THE Ohio State University
For the love of god please throw $1m at Larry Johnson and convince him to stay.
And throw $1m at Kerry Coombs to come back!
I am 1000% committed to Ohio State University. Much love @OSUCoachMeyer
— Garrett Wilson (@GarrettWilson_V) December 4, 2018
Awesome.. more tweets from commits and players please..
Marcus Crowley responded to Garrett's tweet with a '100 100'. I think they all already knew what was happening. Or had a good sense that Day was taking over sooner than later.
100% Committed #GoBucks
— Jack Miller (@jackjamesmiller) December 4, 2018
1000%? Great he's gone
Thank you Coach Meyer. You will be greatly missed. My favorite coach of all time... Looking forward to what the future holds with Day!
Thank you Coach Meyer for all you have done for the program, and this community. Now relax, and get healthy.
Thank the Maker that I was born in Ohio, cradle of coaches, US Presidents, confederate-stomping Generals, and home of The Ohio State University Football Buckeyes- 2014 UNDISPUTED National Champions!
New Chapter! Love Coach Meyer. Bring on Coach Day!
Godspeed. Go enjoy those grandbabies.
Pray for potatoes with a hoe in your hand.
i know my emotions are raging right now. sad... angry...confused... proud...worried...selfish... i'm certainly mindful of coach's health concerns...but what part did drake play in this?
Drake didnt implant a cyst into his brain. So none.
no, of course not, but you have to admit...the way that debacle this fall went down was a humiliating urban meyer beatdown....led by drake.
The person most responsible was Urban Meyer.
False. The media hacks can do this to almost anyone if it fits particular agendas and they have a pretext to work off of. And then you’ll be standing by, ready to condemn their latest target.
No media member made him keep his grandson's mentor on staff despite bad behavior and bad results. No media member made him say what he said at Big Ten Media days in Chicago. No media member made Urban never mention previous accusations of domestic abuse against Smith to his superiors when he was hired or even when he was accused again. Urban and OSU actually handled the abuse accusations pretty well when it happened (thank god), but just about everything else he screwed up.
Everybody makes mistakes. The media selectively report on which mistakes are supposedly "newsworthy", how to frame the narratives, whether to keep trying to destroy the target that inevitably made some mistake at some point in his/her life/career (because the target is always human), etc.
Stunning. Thank you coach for the glorious ride, and making us proud of the Buckeyes. Get healthy, stay close.
I hope this transitions for him into a program “ambassador” (future AD?) or some athletic dept role.
I always thought Woody should have done this prior to the Rose Bowl following his 1975 Big Ten Title.
“I intend to make Georgia howl.” General William Tecumseh Sherman
Great run for Coach Meyer, and great era of OSUFB. Ready for a new era to begin under Ryan Day and excited about it!
My heart is filled with nothing but gratitude, thank you Coach!
Retain Hartline full time, obviously LJ, then explore other options at OL, definitely LB, and secondary for coaches.
I bet he keeps Grinch and Taver Johnson through at least next year.
Stomp TTUN and earn a trip to THE Rose Bowl (where Urbs has never coached). Perfect Buckeye ending.
Long live King Ryan!
OH-IO living in SEC! SEC! Ville
Meyer said he plans to coach next year. Could he be going to the NFL? Something else?
I am not convinced he is finished coaching.
Thanks for a great ride, Coach Meyer!
People were right when they questioned his phrasing. Plans change.
When I was in Dallas in 2014 watching Urban raise the national title trophy I thought I was watching the beginning of something, not the only time that would happen. It's amazing how fast the Urban era flew by.
Great head coach, I hate to see you go. I just hope you don’t wind up at that depressing espn, Thanks again, for giving us some great football to watch.
HE should end up on the CFP Committee... show those ass hats what to look for...
Thank you, Coach Meyer! Buckeye nation has been blessed to have you as a leader. I'm sad, but I respect the fact that this is the right decision for Urban and his family. Get healthy and enjoy your grandsons!
I can hardly believe it when I heard the news today.
Tell me how am I suppose to live without you.
"If you take it to em and you keep takin it to em , hell there's no question whose gonna win" W.W.H
So I guess we now know what those Shelley Meyer tears after The Game meant. Make it a very more touching moment.
Hope his last address after the bowl game will resemble George Washington's farewell to his officers. Held in Fraunces Tavern, New York, he asked his men to come up to and take his hand. He already had tears rolling down his cheeks. Henry Knox was the first and took Washington's hand but could not restrain his emotions. Embraced him with tears flowing. Each officer after repeated Knox's actions. Not a dry eye in the place.
I'm grateful that he was our coach, for the program he has built.
I'd be very proud to meet and greet him someday in the same manner.
Born and bred a Buckeye - Buckeye 'til I die
Jalen Hurts transferring to OSU?? I think we should make a play.
Wow--a shock to the system this morning. Like many others, I had hoped the rumors were unfounded. Thanks for everything coach.
Coach Day--it's your time. Take the ball and run with it.
You Got Barbecue Back There!?!?!?!
Gonna be some new assistant coaches I suspect...
Because I couldn’t go for three
Thanks for the ride Urban! Truly one of the all-time great Buckeye coaches.
THANKS COACH. Don’t go too far Urban. With Archie retired from the University we need a new face of the Athletic Department.
Born and raised Buckeye - happily living in Orlando now!!!
He's not really the type to glad-hand with alumni though. But I wouldn't be surprised if he starts teaching a leadership class or something like that.
Not much different from recruiting if you think about it... I take your point though.
Not sure why he said he planned on coaching in 2019 but it is a sad time for sure. This will have a big impact on recruiting. No way around that I am afraid.
But it was a great run. Shame between his health and the extra stress to start the year.
It's all about recruiting. He didn't want to confirm anything during the season and before all the details were sorted but now that they are it's best to be open and honest with the recruits with that assistants going back on the road and early signing day approaching. Even worse than losing a few recruit would be the perception that OSU lied just to keep them. This way Meyer and Day can recruit together and let the families know their plans for the future.
Maybe he coaches a pee wee team?
Well, Garrett Wilson already re-affirmed his commitment today so you're 0 for 1.
If anything, this move prevents assholes like Dabo Sweeney or Jim Harbaugh or James Franklin from negative recruiting Urban and trying to raise doubts about how long he'll stick around. To the offensive recruits, Day is already a known factor. There's no mystery. There's no doubt, there's no period of uncertainty because the future is already here.
That is a great point.
Add Jack Miller to the list... So that's our top QB prospect and our top WR prospect that just said "I'm still here" on the same day of the coaching change announcement. The notion that people don't think this whole thing was calculated and planned and communicated for the smoothest transition possible is nuts.
Because he did, do you think the notoriously stubborn Meyer was any less stubborn about the end of his career? He does not want to retire, he believes the program's best years are ahead of it. He just had to accept the situation for what it was. I think something happened during the practice week of the B1G Championship that made him comfortable with stepping away, because a week ago he was back to weighing his options as opposed to planning an exit.
"Because I couldn't go for three"
What a great run by a great guy. Thank you for 7 great years. Coach.
Damn...wasn't expecting this to happen so soon.
Thank you, Urban Meyer, for your service.
Welcome, Ryan Day, may your domination of Michigan be as complete.
"porque las estirpes condenadas a cien años de soledad no tenían una segunda oportunidad sobre la tierra."
Thank you Coach Meyer for the wonderful things you have done for The Ohio State University, our football program, our young athletes, and the state of Ohio. You raised the play of the whole Big Ten conference. The excellence you have brought and enhanced to the program have given me great pleasure and great pride. I wish you a long, healthy, happy, prosperous life. Our thanks and prayers go with you.
on the flip side. I hope Brett McMurphy, Paul Finebaum, and the Espn joke troll chorus, are justly recognized for the lies and poisonous vitriol that they spread and they are despised for what they have unjustly done to this good man. President Drake should also bow in utter shame for not having the courage and decency to stand up for Urban when it was completely proven that he was under false and slanderous attack. Drake is a simpering, coward who has hurt Urban, hurt Ohio State, and hurtBuckeye Nation. It is a crime that Drake will still be here when Urban, who did his job with honor, is gone. Hopefully, Drake will be terminated, and don’t let the door hit you on the way out.
Spot on perfect comment - thanks!
My feelings precisely. Unfortunately, Urban isn't the first good man Drake has tried to ruin and probably won't be the last. I hope that they can find a replacement for him before there's even more damage done.
Pick up your feet, turn your corners square! And DRIVE DRIVE DRIVE!!!
Wow.. this came sooner than I thought. Best wishes to Coach Meyer and his family. Ryan Day, say goodbye to your black hair. Is a guy with no head coaching experience ready for this job?
I do not at all have the mind of a bully... in my mind bullies are intolerant of contrary opinion, domineering and rather cowardly.
I just said last night, this could be his last year. It’s all about his health, he wouldn’t have suffered the humiliation he did just to retire afterwards if he had not other choice.
Exactly! I told my son this was it for him the day the pain brought him down to all fours on the sideline during a game knowing the camera would show the world the degree of his problem.
Thankful for the last 7 years. I hope he gets his health in order and stays in the football department at some capacity. Hope our recruiting doesn't take a big hit. It all starts there. Happy for 7-0. Legend !
Rose Bowl or Bust
Thank You Urban! Your name will hang proudly in the shoe right along side Woody! You'll always be my favorite OSU coach. Wish you nothing but the best. Enjoy the grand kids.
Thank you for an incredible run Urban!
Thanks for the memories, Coach!
Was in shock most of the season as so many OSU "fans" were calling for him to go. Well, they got what they wanted. One problem, all those blue-chip players don't just flock to Ohio State because it's Ohio State. They were coming here for Urban. Day could be the greatest football coach in the country, but if he can't continue that recruiting success--and with the exception of Saban I'm not sure who could--don't be surprised if we come back down to earth soon. We've become a very spoiled fanbase, and I would not want to be the one replacing UFM.
I felt we were blessed to be Buckeyes when Coach Hayes was here.
i have had the same feelings with Coach Meyer.
We have received a remarkable gift in his tenure, and we should not take the level of excellence that Coach Meyer brought for granted.
Thank you Coach Meyer (and those who gave so much to and for this program, university and state).
Wish all the best for you and your family.
Highest winning percentage in modern history. Thank you, Coach Meyer. You will be missed.
Thanks for 7 great years coach!
Undefeated against Michigan, what a legacy!
I am going to hate all the Just speculation threads and National reports. I know that's what threads are for and that's what talking heads do but he has earned the right to do whatever he wants whenever he wants for whatever reason he has. Out will come all the "pretending to know why people" I dont care why. If its his decision, i am happy for him.
EsecN just put out a rag report on him. My gosh, these media scumbags are really passing me off. Talking about what really is his legacy. I find myself wanting something bad to happen to them. But that is not the Urban way, so I won’t think it.
As far as you know.
He did something the last 5 OSU football coaches could not do: retire by his own choice.
Great run Urban. Thanks for all of your hard work.
Thank you for leaving this Program in a better place. We are set up for great success going forward thanks to your efforts. On to the Ryan Day Era!
1st coach in forever not fired
That was exactly this guy's point:
Thank you Coach Meyer, you have left an incredible legacy at Ohio State, one that will continue to carry the program forward in good stead.
Time to put yourself, and your family first.
7-0 versus TTUN. Stuff of legends!
Out of darkness cometh light
Buckeye Knight wins! Down with Drake! How this clown stays, i’ll never know.
82-9!!!!! HE WAS 82-9!!!!!!!!
I love coach and hope he is going out on his own terms. I also hope that he stays retired I don't want him taking another job because to me that says he was forced out. On Day, I think he will be fine as long as he keeps certain staff members and by that I mean Larry Johnson, Hartline, and Wilson. He understands what The Game means and he is now part of the Urban tree so he will do just fine.
I saw this coming but man does this hurt. Thank you for everything Urban, you made these last 7 years unforgettable. I can't wait to tell my grandkids about watching the Urban Meyer teams and when the bucks did the unthinkable winning it all in 2014.
"Life's a garden, dig it." -Joe Dirt
Keep Larry Johnson!
Get this man a damn statute. In my opinion he will go down as the second best coach in OSU history and this is coming from someone who absolutely adored Jim Tressel.
I'd probably put Tressel at 2, but it's a good problem to have that we can't sort them easily.
This is so sad. I'm going to miss coach Meyer so much. Hopefully he hangs around the complex next year to have a hand in consulting them some.
Wonder why they didn't do a full search for his replacement? Realize there's not another Urban Meyer to come in and help us win, but wonder why they decided to give it to Day without a hiring process?
There is nothing more remarkable as learning to think better.
Well, my Tuesday sucks now.... Hate to see Urban go but WOW what a ride!!!!!! Best of luck to him! Bet there are 13 fan bases in the BIG that are all smiling right now!
This is all on Drake. Urban won't say it, but he's not going to sit around and wait for that incompetent #metoo joke to snag him in another issue he had zero to do with.
Amazing career only wish we would’ve won at least one more championship! If Day can retain these recruiting classes that will be a strong statement moving forward!
This really freaking hurts. Only seven years of that man’s greatness. I’m sad.
This is definitely where I parked my car.
Thank you Urban, we love you and all you have done for this program. Wish you all the best in you next adventures!
I'm going to miss Shelly and Urban. Thank you Urban.
I'm a lot angrier about this than I expected. Mad at Zach Smith. Sad that Urban hired him.
Sad we only got 7 years. I really hope he sticks around like other past coaches have. I know Bruce and Cooper spent a lot of time at the Woody.
Thanks, Urban. Once a Buckeye, always a Buckeye, which is corny as hell but also true.
It's been an incredible run!!! Thanks Coach!!!
7-0 vs TTUN - enough said
I believe he is the first coach to not get fired.
I saw this coming. I had a source: My best friend’s sister’s boyfriend’s brother’s girlfriend heard from this guy who knows this kid who’s going with a girl who saw Coach pass-out at 31 Flavors last night. I guess it’s pretty serious.
Thank you Coach! I wish, with all my might, you could stay on in some capacity (AD?) or something but thank you Coach for everything you did for tOSU, it was an amazing run. I'm sorry the slimy bastards tried to soil your name. I think Coach Meyer is one of the best coaches to ever coach at this university. God speed Coach, God speed!
Has anyone thought of Washington? I mean....they are about to get destroyed. Urban’s last game, Haskins possibly leaving....hope the score board can show 100
I enjoy reading all of the positive comments. Living in Florida all I have heard about Urban are negative comments concerning his departure from the U of F. The OSU fans are showing far more class than those surrounding me here in Florida.
Herbstreit on Sports Center talking about he knows more details about the situation 'he won't talk about'
So obviously there is smoke to the 'he was forced out' theory, which I happen to believe.
I truly hope he is retiring to focus on his health and take care of himself.
It will be a true punch to the gut if we see him at another big-time program in a couple years.
I HAVE to imagine the crap from this summer, the media, the Board and Drake took at least SOME toll and factored in.
Sad that Coach has to make this move, but he’s done enough for all of us. Thank you for everything Urban! OSU will always be home and we will always love you in Buckeye Nation!
Congratulations Coach Day! It’s a tough spot that you’re in. But if you can do what your predecessors did against TTUN, you’ll join their ranks as legends. We’re with you!
Just watched an interview with Herbstreit . Herbie says he’ll be shocked if Urban coaches anywhere else in the future. He believes as Urban’s friend who knows more about him than others in the media that he will be retired completely from coaching. He may help out in administration. He said what people don’t understand in the media is that Urban is an Ohio State guy through and through this was his dream job.He said the cyst problem is real and the only way to address that is to reduce the stress level significantly which means retiring from coaching.
Very sorry Urban has the health issue but hope that's the real reason for him stepping aside and not some BS from the top and others. "The cyst problem is real and the only way to address that is to reduce the stress level significantly which means retiring from coaching." If this is the reason, fully understand it, and it's good Urban is retiring for his and his family's sake and probably best for the Buckeye team, too. Still sad, though. Good luck, Coach Meyer.
I love knowing that Michigan will have some renewed hope now. It will make next year's win sooooooooo good. If this year didn't crush their souls, next year.... Just wait.
Bless you Coach and thanks.
Nothing cleanses the soul like a no call pass interference.
Thank you Coach and Shelley for the high standards you set for your team in terms of loyalty, examples of family, opportunity for these players after football. You are a good man. Hopefully you will never have to meet with the maggots of society again.
According to Thamel, "all indications point to Day planning to keep veteran strength coach Mickey Marotti, director of operations Brian Voltolini, respected personnel director Mark Pantoni and player development director Ryan Stamper."
This may be Day's most important first move.. making sure ALL of those listed above are retained.
I'm proud of what Coach Meyer did for this University and Football Program.. Outside of a National Championship, what better way to go out than with a Gatorade bath in the Pasadena setting sun...
What an amazing run! National Championship, 4 B1G titles, 7 B1G Division Titles, and of course 7-0 vs ttun. When he was hired, I figured we'd get 6 years, but absolutely no more than 10. Would have loved to have him here longer, but I'm not at all surprised or bothered by this news. He leaves the program in excellent shape, and hands the reins over to a guy that appears to be ready for the job. Hopefully he stays at OSU in some capacity. He will always be a legend in Columbus and we have finally broken that 90 year streak of not having a coach leave of his own volition.
Thanks for everything, Urban, and enjoy the stress free life after getting one last win on Jan. 1. And starting Jan. 2 we are all rooting for Coach Day to keep this thing rolling, which I am confident will happen.
Good Luck Coach Meyer wishing you and your family nothing rainbow's and sunshine...Go Coach Meyer ...Go Bucks
Fuck scUm...Fuck Drake...Fuck Herman...Fuck the little bitch McMurphy
Simply unreal. I’m a supporter of the Meyer family for life. Coach Meyer is a buckeye for life. He’s family. What a journey he took us on and you know what I can promise you not omen of you would say “ well I’m glad that’s over I never want to do that again”. This has been amazing. With that the page has to turn. The shift of focus is changing. This is when we know about our program. Are we going to drop a bit or will we remain constant. I’m a full supporter of Ryan Day and I have since I heard he was coming to OSU. Buckle up guys it’s going to Be fun
The Future is Bright at Ohio State
This is a death blow. Hell, might as well have brought back Fickell.
Oh well. There will be plenty of seats available. High ticket prices and now a worsening product. This is an all around collapse here. I'm surprised people aren't seeing it.
Replaced a legend with some kid. OSU football will be finesse under this guy. He will do damage that will take years to undo once he gets fired. This is total disaster.
Day did great the first 3 games, I'm going to give him a chance. Also, who is the next Urban Meyer out there to hire right now?
Whatever the thing below "Debbie Downer" is called, this is it...
Apparently, next rung is "Miss Walker"
Thank you coach! Never waived in support for you through all of the lies and outside noise this past season. You are a class act and legend! Best of luck to you and your family, hope to see you around the program in some capacity in the future. O-H-
Run the ball over TTUN until fubar!
I will always believe the media forced him to retire. I wonder who they sink their teeth into next? It was a great run,but I do not want to go back to Earle Bruce and 9-3 every year or Cooper who couldn't win any big games. Please keep recruiting nationally and not just Ohio. I am sure coach Day already has plans who he wants to keep and let go. It was so good these last 7 years.
Hes gonna be 55 this summer.
He followed proper protocol and got thrown under the bus.
I don't begrudge his decision at all.
We love you, coach!
It. Is. Time.
Not that he owes the university anything after the way he was treated at the beginning of the season, but what are the odds he consults as an "advisor" to the program or something of that sort that (assuming he retires and doesn't take another coaching gig) they can bring in when recruits are on the fence about playing at OSU to give them a phone call or pay them a visit? I'm not sure how much weight that would even carry since they wouldn't actually be playing for him, but as I've heard numerous recruits say before "When Urban Meyer calls, you listen."
I think that's actually forbidden under NCAA rules. You can only have on-staff coaches do recruiting.
Well in that case, as long as the Meyer family stays in Columbus, give him an office in the Woody and keep him on the payroll with the understanding that he won't be in the office every day?
Well this sucks. Chalk up reason #2,345 this season was so unenjoyable. I can’t help but think of all the glee the sicko sports media must feel right now. They most certainly think they got another scalp. Man I’m gonna miss Urban Meyer.
Round on the ends and "HI" in the middle. O-HI-O.
It was a great run. It would have been nice if he could have only won one more NC, but it wasn’t to be. The Meyer era of recruiting is over, and the Meyer era of games is down to one more. Whether you want to see Day take his place or not, let’s hope that in a few years we’re talking about how fortunate we are to have gone from Tressel, to Meyer, to Day.
Good all around, for Meyer, for Day and for Buckeye Nation
Incredibly sad day for Buckeye Nation to learn that we will soon lose one of the greatest coaches to ever step foot on the gridiron. Urban is a living legend and will always be revered by Buckeye fans...just like Woody and Tressel. I hope Columbus organizes a parade in his honor when he and our boys come home after curb stomping Washington in the Rose Bowl. Ryan Day has some massive shoes to fill! But I know he is up to the task. Next man up! Go Bucks!
Kellen Winslow - Where can I get a sweater vest like yours?
Jim Tressel - Hit the weight room and you can borrow one of mine.
Selfishly I'm very sad.
Unselfishly I'm happy for Urban and his family.
From the bottom of my heart Thank You Urban for everything you did for OSU and this state that you love. It was an honor having you as our coach.
Buckeye Legend !!
"I don't want to be around average, why be around average!" -UFM
Hey Urban, the Bengals (should) be looking for a new head coach. You can bring Haskins with you. Please...
Finally. A Buckeye football coach who went out on his own terms.
Thanks for leading the Buckeyes, Urban Frank Meyer. I shall miss you.
Win the Roses.
I am not very smart, but I recognize that I'm not very smart. --- W.W. Hayes
Ha, that didn't even occur to me Thefter! Thanks for pointing that out.
While I fully appreciate where you are coming from, having to retire because of failing health doesn't quite qualify for leaving on ones own terms. No one would chose that option. It is fair to say however finally an OSU coach who wasn't fired.
May I quote Lou Gehrig?
"Today I consider myself the luckiest man on the face of the earth."
Just saw that the last coach to step away on his own terms prior to Urban happened after the 1950 season. 1950....
Mr. Trotwood (above) has a good point also, NH. And who knows if BOT internal politics had anything to do with UFM's final decision?
Yet, I'd like to think that Urban (and his family) chose free will. And that's a hard thing to come by these days.
Give a listen to that youtube link that is posted in 'Cris Cater talks Urbans Retirement' thread. It is very insightful and quite powerful.
Ryan Day is a lying, cheating scumbag.
(Just trying to get out in front of the national media.)
CFP Committee screwed him out of one last title run ... Thanks for everything, Coach. It would be wonderful if he could actually speak his mind now without worrying about repercussions.
Going back to what I’ve said before, the top 100 recruit that I know really likes Ryan Day. His father thinks there won’t be a letdown under Day’s guidance. I’m selfishly hoping for a late flip here on said recruit.
Thank you Urban. When you signed your extension a year ago I seriously doubt you thought this would happen and that breaks my heart. You wanted to continue but couldn't. Thank you for everything. We will miss you.
Fuck you McMurphy. Now I really hate you.
This is a sad day for me. This whole thing has put alot of un needed pressure on coach and his family. Man I knew this might be coming but man. It's a tough pill to swallow. I know its his health but man deep down I blame the media. I just cant help but feel that way. This was the golden era at The Ohio State University. No matter what anybody say I believe that. Im grateful to be able to witness it. We got screwed outta 2 (12, 15 ) championships and won one. Dominated ScUM!!!! And the players represented OSU proudly. I can say proudly that that Urban backed up alot of my Sh@t I was talking to my fellow vet and active Army buddies when needed. I will miss seeing Urban Freaking Meyer on that sideline. I hope that Ryan Day can continue this dominance of the bigten that Tressel began and Urban took to another level.
As if Washington's ass kicking wasn't going to be bad enough.
The past 7 years have been truly amazing to be a buckeye fan. Words cannot express what he did for this program and university and he will missed especially 7-0 against ttun, one national championship and 3 big ten titles. He will always be a buckeye legend and am happy that I got to experience the ride as a fan. I will obviously support Day but I am (maybe a little surprised) that we didn't look around or interview other candidates. This is TOSU and anyone not named Nick Saban would be interested in this job. Of all the positions I truly hope we keep Larry Johnson.
If you don’t have good health you really have nothing, so Urban needs to take care of Urban. We are fortunate to have had him and I will miss the laser focus he had toward excellence. As he often said of his players who bought into what he was trying to do, “love that guy”.
Hate to see a great career ended prematurely due to health reasson, but such is life. Best wishes Coach, thanks for the memories and my your health issues find a resolution that will allow to enjoy a long and happy time spent with your family and friends.
Based on the in-game forum this past season, I’m surprised no one is popping champagne on this thread. Last I heard, Urban had completely lost his mojo and needed to go ASAP.
On a serious note, so bummed to see coach Meyer go. These last 7 years have been a golden era for Buckeye football. Here’s hoping Coach Day can keep us flying high.
Many many thanks for all the amazing memories the past 7 years. Hell of a run!
“Things may come to those who wait, but only the things left by those who hustle.”
He'll be coaching USC in 2020.
It's hilarious that people think he's going to coaching USC.
I hope Urban is healthy. I hope he coaches again if he so chooses. I hope he and his family continue to be happy outside of the spotlight. The man did his job, and he did it in exceptional fashion. I'm really disappointed we're here, but I've been ready for this since the suspension - and hoping it wouldn't happen the whole time.
I took a photo of him in Indy because I had a feeling. I'm keeping that one.
1. Oklahoma made the template with Lincoln Riley.
2. It is amazing how the coaching change has evolved. After Woody, Earle, and Cooper, there was an extensive search opening involving a minority coach as a sort of Rooney Rule. Even after Fickell, there was a fig leaf of a search. IIRC, there was something about posting the position in the Chronicle of Higher Education. Guess times have changed.
People can say what they want about his health,TOSU drug him through the mud,I seen this coming when they suspended him for 3 games FUCK drake and Gene Smith there scumbags. On the other side i think Day is good but hell never be like Urban:Best 7 years of TOSU football for me im 37 other then Trussel.Urban will always be one of my favorite #TYURBANFOREVERYTHING
"Nobody despises to lose more than I do"
Hell yeah. Thanks Urban for the last national title I'm going to see in my lifetime.
Even years like this will be sorely missed. Ready to enter a malaise filled run of Citrus Bowls. Michigan and Penn State just took a big step forward today. Still, they won't win national titles either.
Family has had season tickets for 40+ years ... My father has some strong ties to the University / Urban. He has been telling me that Urban is stepping down after this year, and even called me last night to tell me. I told him that there was no way, and that he would probably be gone after NEXT year. Egg on my face ... Wish it wasn't true, but it has been a hell of a ride.
The real measure of Urban Meyer won't be Wins, Conference Titles, or National Championships. It will be the thousands of players, assistant coaches, staffers, and others that learned from him: Dedication, seeking and working toward excellence, not accepting average, the importance of team, and attention to detail. The majority of Buckeyes who don't go pro and we never hear from again we be: better citizens, employees, fathers, and community members. That's a real legacy.
Coach Meyer - thank you for putting Ohio State as an Elite Program! Hands down one of the greatest coaches in College Football. I hope he enjoys retirement but I fee like it's going to be shortcoming. I think he will have an itch to come back.
If I'm Brian Kelly, I'd be worried. I can see Urban being the next HC for Notre Dame in the next 2 years. It just so happens that we play Nortre Dame in 2023.
Anyways - THANK YOU COACH! YOU WILL BE MISSED!
Good bye sir, it has been a privilege to watch and read about your team and our program under your watch! I do wish this would have been announced Saturday, I wish to have witnessed one last fight between you and Saban for it all!
Thank you to Coach Mick, as well as the structure for staying. We will not be here again, we will not do this again! Rejoice with your family and I hope that your time here has brought you even more happiness than it has all of us!
I would rather be on hand with 10 men then elsewhere with 10,000 - Timur Lenk
This honestly is no surprise here..and it begins with that disaster of a presser in August when Urban was suspended. The "thrown under the bus" look on his face when Prez Drake announced it. Several members of the Board of Trustees/BOT who stated that the suspension was never on the table..just to time already served by Urban. ESPN already heard from that idiot Finebaum who literally said "Urban does not get it". And when I see former ESPN voice Jay Crawford state the following on his Twitter feed this morning..
"The Urban resignation surprises me not at all. You could see on his face and sense in his body language he was done with the Buckeyes when Prez Drake caved to the social warrior twitter mob in August. Can’t blame him."
FINALLY...someone who understands the truth as to what happened.
With that said above. Urban's record stands for itself. Best wishes with your retirement. Have fun with your grandchild and your family. We will miss you, but the keys to the team are being placed in the good hands of Ryan Day.
"Just remember one thing. I can do your job, but you can't do mine." - Woody Hayes to an OSU professor
Right on MightyMac, every damn word.
Not surprised, sad to see it come to fruition. It was a hell of a ride. One more to go before a well deserved rest.
On another note, can you even imagine the pressure on one Jimbo Harbaugh when he hosts rookie HC Ryan Day's Buckeyes next year? (giggles)
Having grown up during the Cooper years, UFM has stacked vengeance on top of vengeance. 7 and 0 and 85 yards through the heart of the south.
At first I was skeptical of Day but I'm going to give him a shot. He is clearly respected by Urban and was on radar of NFL teams. Programs have been successful hiring young guys with no head coaching experience. Lincoln Riley immediately comes to mind. I'd much rather have the up-and-coming hotshot than a retread. Us landing someone of Urban's caliber in 2011 was pure luck in timing.
Has the Washington line started moving yet? Didn't it open at -4 or something ridiculous?
I gotta admit reading these posts and thinking about all the enjoyment OSU football has brought me over the past 7 years got me a little teary eyed.
Congrats Coach Meyer on a successful career and a successful tenure at OSU!
I gotta think the coaches and many of the players knew this was happening and wouldn't doubt Meyer discussed the possibility with recruits. The outside media wants you to think Urban is a snake, but I have found him to be sincere and a good mentor to these young men. Day has a solid template to follow.
One other thing, Urban seemed to have hand-picked Day. And for that we should buy into Day.
Thank you Coach Meyer for everything you have done for the Ohio State program. We wish you the best and you surely will be missed.
Thank you for everything you have done for the program Urban; enjoy retirement and time with Shelley
Thank you Urban
Well FUCK that was not the news I wanted to read with my morning coffee.. sigh
The best thing about Pastafarianism? It is not only acceptable, but advisable, to be heavily sauced
Can the BoT fire Drake and replace him with Urban?
That would be BEAUTIFUL
Not sure I'm all in with Ryan Day, not to say there is upside in terms on staff and recruiting continuity and do not respect him. No real head coaching experience is not ideal. Hope I am wrong!
Connection to Paul Brown with this move by OSU, hopefully will produce a NC like that did.
Urban Meyer is the first OSU coach to NOT get fired since Paul Brown
Ryan Day is the first head coach to be hired with no college HC experience (Sorry I am not counting 3 game interim with 2 lay up games)
Best wishes UM, good luck Ryan Day!
You win with people
Wes Fesler resigned in 1950 citing "excessive pressure to win football games".
Created the opening for a guy named Wayne Woodrow Hayes.
Happy for Urban and his family. But I'm upset at the circumstances. The man deserved to go out on his own terms, not under the cloud and stress of a fake scandal. I feel like somewhere McMurphy and Finebaum are high-fiving with cigars in their mouths.
AKA the Horseshoe, the Shoe, and the House That Harley Built
You win with people.
Thanks Coach Meyer and his family. Great times, great ride! Best of luck wherever life takes you! Good luck to Coach Day as the new head Coach. A word of warning though, Urban could no longer trust his bosses who failed to have his back. Maybe a more experienced candidate would be hard pressed to take that job after what happened to a coaching legend. When your bosses throw you under the bus for the sake of political correctness, I would leave too.

BINGO..............!!.....I suspected this would happen back in August. Meyer doesn't like being p***** on.............
I agree, but who does like being p***** on?
I hope nobody answers this question, it was rhetorical, RIGHT?
hopefully those below R Kelly's beltline
Thank you Coach. We will miss you more than some would care to admit. Enjoy your next phase!
"I don't apologize for anything. When I make a mistake, I take the blame and go on from there." - Woody Hayes
Welp. I did not expect to see this news today, but I get it. He has done everything he could, and then some, to take care of, and drastically improve on everything associated with the football program. Hell. More like the whole athletic program!! Now it’s time for him to take care of him! I remember 8 years or so ago being devastated about Tressel being let go and thinking “well damn. There goes everything!” Somehow this seems more devastating, yet oddly satisfying since he did it his way.
"Play for Ohio State or get beat by Ohio State. That simple." - Kirk Barton
Thanks Coach Meyer!! We’ll be there in Pasadena to ensure you know how much Buckeye Nation appreciates you! A great 7 year run, so happy you were able to come back home.
Still one of my favorite pics... he was ready to run through a wall here...
36-24-36? Ha ha, only if she's 5'3"
He looks quite a bit younger in that picture. Hard to believe it is only 4 years ago.
After listening to both Herbie and Cris Carter, I'm pretty certain this is due to health reasons. Carter especially was compelling.
I saw thousands of xichigan fans dancing in the streets this morning. Washington fans, not so much
If Urban supports Ryan Day as head coach that’s all I need to know.
Thought for sure he would come back for one more year with Haskins and make a run at a title. Thanks for everything coach Meyer it was a hell of a run!!
Hate to see him hang it up but I understand. His tenure was a big time success and he’s leaving the program in great shape.
Is there something else going behind the scenes that we don't know about or did OSU/Gene Smith botch this completely?
If I was the Athletic Director, this is what I would have done. Meyer, I know you have health issues exaserbated by stress of being the CEO of the football program. With the NCAA letting us having an extra coach on the staff, lets transition you from "CEO" to "Chairman of the Board" type role as that "extra coach" and return the offense/defense coaching numbers back to before. You will take a pay cut to about $2M/yr with much less demand. Day, we want you to run the program. You will effectively take over the head coach position and be the "CEO" of the program. Meyer will mentor and guide you but its your program to run. You will make $4M/yr to start. Now go build/transition your supporting coaches.
Recruits have Meyer there next year or two, Day for the future... Meyer will have his cake and eat it too... Day will have the best transition into the job that anyone has ever had... The players will have continuity... Harbaugh, will need to buy more khakis to change into...
But hey, what do I know, I'm just a fan.
All I can say is Great Job coach! You will be missed. Hope we see you at some games as a spectator, we would love to have you! I know this team will play their hearts out ! #Buckeyeforlife
Almost swerved off of the road getting the notification this morning but as a Buckeye nothing you can do but be thankful for 7 years of sad *ichigan fans and a Natty. Wish Urban was one of those coaches that are coaching into their 70s but oh well next man up coach Day!! LGB!
First - thanks to Coach Meyer for putting his heart and soul into OSU for the last seven years and making a great program even better.
I’m wondering if this transition wasn’t planned for a while – maybe 18 months (or so). Hindsight is always easier but here is what I remember that seemed a little weird at the time.
We recruited a passing quarterback in Matthew Baldwin and the next quarterback recruit (Dwan Mathis) is also a pro style quarterback (vs dual threat). This seemed very un-Urban like, at the time.
I read somewhere (11W) that one of the quarterback recruits was told by the OSU coaching staff that we are going to be more of a passing team and less of a running team. This struck me as odd, particularly to RB recruits.
The timing of Urban original cyst diagnosis – 2 years ago +/- could have been the catalyst for a transition discussion.
The fact that Day was named interim head coach during Urban’s suspension surprised a lot of people, who thought Schiano or Wilson would be a natural fit.
I am not saying January 2, 2019 was ever discussed. However, I would not have been surprised if January 2020 was a potential date and it was accelerated by his current health status and the suspension bullshit (read lack of support by administration).
Anything else that seemed weird over the last 18-24 months?
Thanks for the memories, coach, including these two
You will be missed
That's a Buckeye touchdown!
I normally rail against worshipping celebrities, but there is something different about today. We just saw the Golden Era of Buckeye Football and I'm so blessed that the stars aligned for me to transfer into OSU the year we won the natty in '14 and to be witness to all of this. Many thanks to Urban and his family. Will always be my favorite college coach of all time.
"Urban Meyer just retired?! are you sure?! don't mess with me, boy!"...."honey, Urban just retired! HOO HOO!!" - Jim Harbaugh.
I knew when I saw Shelly crying DURING the 4th Quarter of The Game it was over.......
Dammit. He has looked haggard on the sidelines this year so it's not entirely surprising. I am thankful for the last seven years and look forward to HC Ryan Day and what he can bring to the program. Agreed with the others who said it's better to have a hotshot than a retread. The coach is dead, long live the coach. Here's to ya Urbz.
Wouldn't it be funny if this was the ultimate troll job ... reporters breaking stuff before the real news comes out. Then Urban comes out for the presser saying "You can't believe everything you hear!". Wishful thinking?
Two things I thought of this morning:
I can imagine the national press saying Urban lied again when asked about next year when he said "I'm coaching." However, this was actually a true statement. He knew he'd be coaching in the Rose Bowl which is on Jan. 1, 2019.
Also, it is always important for OSU to beat _ichigan, but just think how much more important it was this year. Had we lost, the national media would say his health wasn't the real issue in his retirement, it was really because Harbaugh ran him out. He saw _ichigan ascending past us while we were dedcending. At least they can't use this crappy narrative now!
Thanks Urban for 7 great years. I pray your health improves and you have a great retirement!
Thought about this ... but I think he said "I plan on coaching." To me that leaves a little door of uncertainty in any capacity. Always best to not speak in absolutes.
I guess both sides took a breath after the scandal that never was and worked on a amicable parting. Is it ever a good time when a hall fame coach moves on?
Is there any other kind of coach at Ohio State?
Fire Gene Smith. Hire Urban Meyer as new AD.
You're up Asian Fickell
I'll tell you one thing. I wouldn't to be Washington. The Buckeyes aren't sending UFM out with an L
Thank you Coach Meyer for the memories. The undefeated 2012 season, multiple Conference championships, the greatest game I ever watched as a Buckeye (Sugar Bowl vs Bama), the Natty that I finally got to see Ohio State win in person......and I get to cross the last thing off my college football bucket list before you leave (the granddaddy of them all). Oh and most importantly, 7-0 vs Michigan! Thank you Coach Meyer!!
"I love football. I think its the most wonderful game in the world and I despise to lose" - Woody Hayes
THANK YOU URBAN, FOR SIX AWESOME YEARS!!!!! I WISH YOU AND YOUR FAMILY THE BEST OF LUCK!!!!! GOD BLESS YOU AND YOUR FAMILY!!!!!
UP IN ANN ARBOR, THEY ARE CELEBRATING!!!!!!!
First thing that came to mind was OMG he will be a legend.
Second thought was thank you Urban for some great football
Third was Shit! No one can recruit like Urban.
First and goal at the five and Arch is getting the ball.
Huh, say what? I thought he'd just recently said he planned on coaching? What happened? Health reasons, pressure from above, etc?
I guess this isn't a positive for Haskins returning next season, not that I thought that was likely, anyway.
Oh, well, best wishes Coach Meyer. Stay tuned for further coaching changes, especially with the D. Good luck, Coach Day. Go Buckeyes!
We'll miss him. I'm here for an
shirt. Make it happen Dry Goods!
"Well-prepared players make plays. I have yet to be in a game where the most prepared team didn't win.” - Urban
Get busy living.
Thank you, coach. This is a bit of a surreal moment for me, even if somewhat expected. Thank you for everything.
I know what you mean. I expected UFM wouldn't be around for long but I'm still shocked, especially for it happening this soon, so soon after he said he planned on coaching. Hmmmm.
Thank you, Coach. The streak of OSU coaches being fired ends, but the win streak versus Michigan shan't.
Don Brown must've attended night school, because he got owned by Day.
Urban...I love you
I would like to see him stay on at the university in some capacity. If nothing else, just to ensure the Real Life Wednesday program keeps going. Add in some fundraising on the side.
Of course the real a-hole in me, would hope that he takes another job at ESPN, so all of the folks there who have bad mouthed him on twitter would have to face him on a regular basis.
not gonna happen but I hope meyer says...
"I love Ohio State and I made this decision to retire because I want the Buckeyes to be eligible for the College Playoffs when they are one of the 4 best teams. It is clear that the Committee has decided that OSU will no longer be eligible as long as I am coach here. So I'm going to what is best for the university and my players and retire to give them a chance to be successful next year."
He gave it all, worsening his health in the process. The greatest coach in OSU history. Think Day will do great. All media who have interviewed him or spent time with him (McElroy, Rutledge, etc.) say he will be a superstar.
Thank you Urban Meyer. A Champion who left it all on the field fighting for Ohio State.
No thanks Michael Drake. A flake who left a good man hanging and pretended to be for Ohio State.
You've earned it coach. Miss you already!
Enjoy your grandchildren, Urban. You have earned it. &n
