He may be speculating on retiring, but naming Day, a man who has very little experience makes this seem like a real stretch. That being said, Gene Smith denies it for Urban... I think Urban is just tired of answering the questions. http://www.espn.com/college-football/story/_/id/25419820/ohio-state-ad-g...

Once again, everybody-that is the job of the media--TO STIR THE POT.  For the writer's outside of Columbus, anything to get the Buckeye's OFF FOCUS, so the hate will continue.  They don't want to see OSU win.  They don't want Urban to go out without tension/controversy.  I am behind you coach!  Thanks for all the wonderful years you have brought to the Buckeyes, if you are leaving.  AND-should you decide to stay, thanks for all the wonderful years you have brought to the Buckeyes, no matter how years you chose to continue.  Have been praying against the cyst.  That no matter what decision you make about football, you will be able to enjoy your wife and family MANY MORE YEARS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Go, Bucks, beat the CATS!

ROLL TIDE, beat the Dawgs, so you won't slide in the back door!

Go, Pitt, surprise the heck out of the fighting Dabo's.

Hook Em, Horns, put up 62 against Boomer, this time.  You know that same awesome number TTUN saw last week?

GO, UCF!  We Buckeye fans know it's rough losing a QB.  May your back-up excel like our CARDALE in '14.  Another conference champ, undefeated, who doesn't make the Final Four.  Thank you Knights, for playing for your American championship, while the Fighting Irish sit at home, already "sliding in the back door."  Make a decision, ND-join a conference or transfer to the FCS.

And, to you Huskies and Utes, I am not rooting 1 way or the other, and don't really care.  BUT- I assume you both are rooting for Oklahoma, so you won't have to face our beloved Buckeyes in Pasadena.  However, Washington, I am thankful you beat your rival, giving OSU a chance.

MICHIGAN STILL SUCKS

HS
CowCat's picture

What needs to happen for Urban to stay is for Drake to give him an apology.

Yes, there were allegations of domestic abuse, but none of that has turned out in the court of law much less the police department records. Urban was suspended not for lying, but just responding to a false assertion, "felony assault charges". It wasn't true in the first place, and he reacted truthfully but awkwardly.

Drake needs to grow a pair and realize that Urban is a coach you get maybe once in a generation.

The president needs to grow a pair because the football coach was offended? You might have those roles backwards.

HS
fear_the_nut70's picture

Can we stop with this stupid fanboy take?  Meyer brought Smith in despite the allegation in Florida and did not tell his employer.  He did NOT fill out the required Title IX paperwork (despite fact that this info originally came from Title IX officer, to Gene, then to Urban, they were still required to fill out the paperwork).  Gene told Urban to fire Zach after his performance declined and given knowledge of multiple DV allegations.  Urban refused.  Urban then mislead people, intentionally or otherwise, with his answers at Big Ten Media Days.  This cost the university a ton of embarrassment and money investigating this.  He was suspended for poor judgement, which it was.

Those fanboys that keep demanding that Drake apologize are people who only care about wins on the field. The only one that should be apologizing is YOU, for this bad take.

You are entitled to you own opinion, not your own facts.

HS
CowCat's picture

I'm not being a fanboy.

The truth of the matter is that there were allegations only, not convictions. Smith was arrested once for trespassing and was fired, even though that was dubious. His ex-wife didn't show up to the agreed meet-up point to pick up her kids.

Alleged this, alleged that. It's not the job of the head coach to be a police officer, judge, or marriage counselor. He can only react to the information and questions he's given.

Urban is a great and I wouldn’t want to trade him for Saban if I could, but that’s loyalty over logic.  Saban is objectively greater. His national championship ring count says so. With the exception of an outlier year (2011), OSU’s program was in much better shape than Bama when inherited.

HS
TakeitToEm's picture

UFM won everywhere he coached BG, Utah , UF and OSU.

Saban was mediocre at Toledo , Mediocre at MSU , bad in the NFL.

UFM forced a change in the SEC coaching to compete with him and forced a change in B1G to compete with him .

UFM averages less than 1 loss per year in conference and yet only won the B1G title 3 times to show how difficult to win this old conference now.

That's a load of bull.  OSU was on NCAA sanctions that cost Urban a year that we woulda played Alabama in the championship. It also cost a few scholarships a year. Alabama was not on those same terms, and Saban had felt out the boosters and knew that they could be used to take his recruiting thing to the next level. He positioned himself quite well. But he would not have left LSU for Alabama if they were held out of a bowl and held scholarships back.

Once the 2019 recruiting class is signed, Urban will announce that he’s retiring. After what happened this season and his health issues, he should call it a career.

HS
Sheridanclan11's picture

IMO, he is leaving after the season. In fact,  I believe that Coach Meyer would prefer not to be in the CFP because that would add another month of stress that he doesn't want or need. This game will be the end of the golden era of Buckeye football and it has been a fun ride.

HS
DefendYoungstown's picture

I think he would be OK with a trip to the CFP.  He would not be upset with a trip to Pasadena though either, he's never take the buckeyes to Pasadena as the head coach.  That wouldn't be a bad way to ride off into the sunset.

The part that scares me is he goes back into a role at ESPN for a year or two, the itch comes back and he lands at ND and sticks it to us in the future.

What we can't do in the air we'll do on the ground.

HS
BuckAlum09's picture

End of the golden era?? We’re the winningest program (by percentage) in the nation over the last 50 years. You’re saying that run ends when Urban leaves?

You need to head south for the holidays. Get some sunshine on that stormy disposition.

BA09, this guy is funny. He is either a troll or one of the worst OSU fans around. Check his posts before the TTUN game, he has a couple that said we wouldn’t score in double digits, talks bad about our QB. I thought all of those kind of posters had slithered back into their holes after last weekend, I guess not.

HS
Sheridanclan11's picture

It is not being a bad fan predicting a double digit loss, especially coming off the prior month. Only a completely bias, blinded fan would have called a victory, let alone the blow out. That was a different team last week. I don't know that it carries over to this week against a less conventional offense. As for Coach Meyer, the no comment, his wife's reaction after the game and, most importantly, his health condition is leading me to believe he needs to get away. I am fine with that. He has been a great coach and he should do what is best for him, his health, and his family.

HS
Sheridanclan11's picture

Yes, the end of the golden era. Coach Urban has averaged 12 wins a season. His winning percentage is unbelievable. You can't expect the next coach to come close to that. I don't even know if we can expect Coach Tressel-like success. Look at what Michigan, USC, Notre Dame, and others have gone through. I am simply happy to have been around to see this great run of success.

Before he accepted a job offer to coach the Buckeyes, his family made him sign a  contract with them first.

Shelley, daughters Nicki and Gigi and son Nate all had their terms, such as: My family will always come first. I will take care of myself and maintain good health. I will not go more than nine hours a day at the office. I will trust God’s plan and not be overanxious. I will eat three meals a day.

Nicki wrote it up on a now-famous page of pink notebook paper, and Urban signed.

This, I think, is the only contract that really matters in UFM's life. Best wishes to him, whatever his decision.

HS

Here’s the deal everyone. Urban wants to continue to coach. With his health issues it’s impossible for him to say with certainty how much longer he can. It may be five years or it may be one. People keep hounding him for a definitive answer. He obviously doesn’t feel comfortable giving one because he’s not even sure. Hence the reason he keeps saying he plans on coaching. And from OSU’s perspective they want Urban to continue to coach but they also recognize that with his health issues that there is some uncertainty. They love Day and would like him to be the next head coach if something was to happen so they are going to open their checkbooks to keep around. It’s really that simple.

Don't listen to Freddy P. Soft

HS
script-ohio's picture

We don't know that.  We really have no idea if Urban has a plan in mind or not, or whether that plan is subject to change based on how the next year or so goes.  It's possible he's already discussed it with his family and whatever he's decided is a done deal.  It's also possible he's planning on stepping down after this season, or next season, based on his headaches but if those subside...maybe he'd change his mind.  It's also possible he has no plans whatsoever to step down and hopes to coach here another 20 years.  We have no idea.

HS

Given the circumstances, the melodrama is to be expected.

Disagree. Coach has said he's staying.  If he's not, he's not going to announce likely until after the bowl game so I kinda wish everyone would just STFU about it.  His decision is out of our control.  Hyping it and foaming at the mouth non stop until January serves no purpose.

He has the luxury of doing that. Most folks wouldn't be able to quit their job so they could spend more time with their family... Everyone would LOVE to be able to do that but we haven't been paid multi millions per year either. Hopefully he's has a good market man because with the lifestyle he and Shelley are used to, the money would start drying up real quick if he chose to step down and spend 100% of his time at home.

So, what are we telling recruits when they ask if Urban's going to be around for their time at tOSU?   I'd really like to know how Urban's answering that question.  Because he can't blatantly lie to recruits and their parents.

Responses I Dreamed of hearing...

for Urban's enjoyment, to intrepid reporters of their feelings:

I don't get the criticism of Day. He is an offensive focused coach who is great with quarterbacks and recruited Miller, wilson and Olave. Keeping him keeps recruiting stable which is more important than coaching and in 2000, offense is more important than defense in both college and NFL. Everyone shoots their wad on experience or Matt Campbell, but Day has connection with kids and will be least volatile transition. All the up and coming programs, Georgia, Oklahoma, Clemson, bet on assistants they were comfortable with who could recruit. Fickel recruits ohio, not nationally..if we want to keep what we have or close to it, we can't go back to mostly recruiting Ohio

HS
BrutusB's picture

I don’t think it’s anything personal against Day. But he still only has three games experience and OSU is one of the best jobs in CFB so it seems weird to not at least open the job for everyone rather than just appointing him the successor.

Tampatom....

Sooooo... we "can't go back to mostly...?"

then...

why do we keep on doing, in fair whether or foul...

precisely what we 'just can't do'?

Just mebbe, it could be potentially possible, that a very few "don't get it".   Not you & I, of course....   ;-{)}

Ain't it grand, though?  While we keep on serving our S.O.S. on whoever 'happens' to be 'in range'... our 'kids' are preparing to excel in the Arena, TONIGHT... in front of our very eyeballs so short on sight.

TIC... hmmmm.... go back to those vid clips where our players 'thank' us, the 'greatest fans'... for our 'support'.  Could there possibly 'be' ... a 'faint smile' with the words delivery?  For how, in Die-Ver City... could 1 size possibly fit all?

Circle gets the Square?

Maybe Urb should just refer hard questions to McMurphy, who seems to know everything.

HS

Mr. Know-It-All?  You refer of course, to [ref cartoon series w/Professor Peabody, Sherman, and the Claimant in question....]?

Well, one was once [in The WayBack Machine, no doubt] 'lifestyle tested' for veracity... so it seems, that it seems, the same test 'is available' for Mister McMurphy... for Fairness and Balance, ya know.  Now we know as our education tells, that you can't pass the course until you pass the test... so it could potentially 'be'...

...that Mister McMurphy...

will silence himself in the bargain.

Just like we all would.

Which suggests why, the only One Who Can...did...in full...for all.

===and therein is 'The Answer'... to which we all can 'recognize', then "refer".

I hope if he does leave after next year that he goes for 70 against the skunk weasels. Won’t that be a heckuva way to finish the rivalry with crazy khaki pants!

So, you are saying khaki pants is back next year?  Do you think our next coach would still be coaching here if he lost his first 4 games to TTUN?

I think Ryan Day will make an excellent head coach. I wish he were from Ohio (more ingrained respected for OSU and the rivalry) but he's going to be a good regardless.

I hope Urban Meyer gets another Championship.  Coach Day will be a great coach if Coach Meyer decides to step down in the future.  I know coach Day can run a good offense.  I think another year or two under Urban he will even be better.  Go BUcks!!

All of you doing so, stop reading into this BS. The media will do everything to distract this team as was proven at the beginning of the year and every week since. Stop helping them.

Here are a few things we know definitively... Urban loves Ohio State. Urban has health issues. Urban will not coach forever. Urban's honesty has been called into question and he is purposefully clear to affirm his honesty.

I think all the off field circus forced a situation where Urban/OSU had to be proactive and plan ahead. Urban probably planned on coaching until 2021/2022 and reassess if he wants to continue before this past off season. What this off season showed was that Day has the respect of his peers, he has the respect of the recruits who will affirm their pledge to OSU without Urban, and the continuity of the program is in good hands with Day. If Day goes elsewhere because he is in high demand, it could cause a hiccup in the program. So there might be a plan to give Urban an official "senior season" to finish off his career honoring him while helping Day learn the experience with a mentor helping Day build his own new assistant coaches and integrate them. (Schiano, Stud, Davis out the door.. maybe even Wilson)

The other part that makes me feel inclined to believe next year will be his final year is the recruiting. We are sitting at 16 with mostly 3*s while all the other major programs are sitting at 23. Urban might be honest with those kids that he's not going to be here for their 4 years which is slowing down some of the commitments. There would probably be a harder push for the top recruits once he's solidify Day for 2020.

Of course Meyer has a psych degree.... this might be his mind game to motivate his players that love him to want to send him out this year with a National Championship.

But Ohio State is not dependent on one person, its a program... Go Bucks!

I appreciate Urban forward planning. He knows Ryan Day is special and Urban knows he is close to the end maybe not this year but who knows. He obviously cares enough about Ohio State to leave it in good hands. Every time someone stirring shit it’s the media holding the spoon.

All you d*cks who wanted him gone or called for his head in the third quarter of nearly every close game, congratulations, wish granted. The way he was railroaded by the administration this summer was bullsh*t. Same sanctimonious journalists and pundits trying to dirty his name over Zach Smith soap opera were the same ones that were insinuating his indirect guilt in the Hernandez murders. The way his integrity and character were called into question and everyone that mattered basically sat on there hands while it happened, shameful. I would leave too if I were him. That said I hope he stays but if he leaves, he deserved better than what he got.

Urban misses the mark by... THAT MUCH... just like we all do.

this example is in big bold letters, capitalized:

"SPECULATION HAS NOT DISTRACTED...."

In order to claim the negative... you must first recognize & judge by naming whatever "it" was/is that 'stimulated' your particular response.  Science Says So....  So does reason.

Simply... 'refer' to Mr. Perfect... and you... will... never... be... wrong.

Because you [your ego, 'yours'] are 'doing' a 'cc' on the message you received, not telling/claiming you 'know what it means'.

Ok, so just speculating, suppose Meyer does announce both that he is returning next year but due to reasons it will be his last season as a coach, he's retiring, whatever.

So if the rumors are true to that extent then suppose further that they are also true about Day being anointed as Meyer's successor starting in 2020.

Bear with me, my question is what would you expect Day to do coming in as the new boss in 2020? Who on his staff does he replace? Gotta figure if Meyer exits then several of his assistants would likely follow some retiring and others moving on.

Wahoo! Wahoo! Rip, Zip, Bazoo! I Yell. I Yell. For O.S.U.

HS
WildBear Buckeye's picture

Davis had better be already gone by then. Day should have no trouble at all finding an upgrade over Studrawa. Unless CBs make a big leap next season, same can be said of Taver Johnson.

I can't imagine Schiano would be willing to stay under Day, but even if he is, I'm just not convinced he is the kind of top-notch DC OSU needs. I think he's best suited for an HC position at a program with ... let's say "reasonable" aspirations.

I'm really not sure what to think of Grinch at this point. In part because I'm not sure what exactly he does. It's possible he wants to run a very different defense from Schiano but just doesn't have a say. It's also possible he's just not good enough. I'd be willing to give him a shot at DC for a season, but at the end of that season I'd want to have a clear picture of how he plans to get the Silver Bullets back to elite, even if he doesn't get there yet.

I'm willing to go with Day's decision on Kevin Wilson. As with Grinch, I'm not really sure what he does right now. Since he's been outstanding at other stops, so I'd like to see what he would do on a restructured staff.

LJ Sr, Alford, and Hartline are the three people I would absolutely like to see Day bring back.
