The league is strong but the top teams are most certainly not elite.
He was very good but not elite? The Big Kat, AJ, and Chris never disappeared in big games but they didn't have Fickell calling the D nor a susceptible secondary behind them. On second thought, we might be begging for his return next especially early on next year.
Fickell and company have consistently struggled against the bubble screen from spread offenses. Saturday's screens were much more conventional which is of greater concern to me. The star defensive exposes the backside to one on one coverage and is prone to screens and throw backs. Let's give credit to scum, they were clearly watching OSU film the last few weeks instead of focusing on their opponents which was a Tressel philosophy in the weeks leading up to the big game. I watched the game again and I am concerned about the play of the linebackers and secondary. Grant appears to be too conservative while Roby plays with reckless abandon. Wouldn't it be great to have a balance of the two. Lot's of folks will praise Powell for his last play heroics but the rest of his play was no better than the others in the secondary. Withers blamed last years secondary play on the lack of challenge from the wideouts during practice. Maybe Kenny, Donte, and others should run more scout team and provide the look that big time players can. I know it sounds desperate but I am thirsty for another drink from the national championship cup!
Happy we are, satisfied we can not be!
The lack of a speed at safety and the star position does not permit us to play press man coverage. And as much as I hate to admit it, Fickell is from the Tressel era where bend but don't break thrived. His blitz call late in the game was so predictable that even the team up north new it was coming and they nearly scored. I am at a loss as to why the defense is so poor when we clearly dominate the line of scrimmage.
Sorry, relatively new to the site but passionate about the bucks. I'll stick to reading and let the others post.
After seeing TJ Logan and the Northern Guilford Nighthawks beat-up on Neal and his Wilson teammates in 3 consecutive state semi-final games, Lewis was the better choice without a doubt. He plays harder and has multiple state championship rings to show for his efforts. Speaking of TJ Logan, the one time Buckeye Recruit, he is a touchdown making machine with speed to die for. He won the 100m and 200m with far better times than Mitchell and EZ. Let's hope Lewis sees the field soon or I have a feeling the NC schools will be calling for his services.
I hope that Hall pans out this year. I truly believe that Hall taking another year cost us a player by the likes of TJ Logan from North Carolina who Withers had done an excellent job of recruiting even though he was an early commit to UNC. He scored 8 touchdowns and 510 yards in the state championship game alone, his third straight title. With over 140 touchdowns, legitimate 4.2 speed, incredible toughness, and great hands, he was a steal and ready to flip. Thanks Everett for spending time with us at Northern Guilford High School.
