The #15 for Bama is referencing the 15 national championships that the university recognizes, so it's their default number for things like this, helmet logos, etc.
I understand that no one is intending to directly compare the struggle of a game to the hell that is war, but I've always been uncomfortable describing a football game as a war. I'm sure it's useful in getting players into the right mindset for a game like this, but it seems to trivialize the actual horrors of war.
