I believe the :We need to get better" statement is just that, unless there is obvious improvement throughout the season.

Perfect example:

Dantonio tells the press in East Lansing ," ...we have to get better on offense"  week 1

(they were horrible the first 2-3 weeks of the year offensively)

8 weeks later they have a legitimate offense that is producing.  They made some drastic changes at running back, coached some guys up, threw in some unique passing plays to the TE and Running back and WOW!  Drastic times call for drastic measures.  Dantonio made the adjustments that he needed to make offensively.  If yo ask anyone on this post "Do you believe after watching MSU the first 3 games of the season with that pathetic offense, that they will challenge us, let alone beat Stanford in the Rose Bowl?  People would have laughed, they had no offense. They did something about it.

MSU offense week 1-5:   C- to  a D  (Grade)

MSU offense last 2 weeks of the season : A-  That is drastic improvement!

All I am saying is we have heard "we need to get better" when asked about our defensive scheme and defense in general, what has happened over the course of 13 weeks..? Nothing if anything most would agree we have regressed.

OSU defense week 1  (c-)

OSU Defense after 13 weeks  (c-)

Our defense is still in DRASTIC times!!!

I'll take high school kids and teach them better than Coombs; and they would had performed better against Clemson.  period!  They would have taken one of the WR screens to the house for 6 points and would not have been more than 2 yards from Sammy Watkins all night!!!

This is not saying we don't have the talent, because we definitely do, just has not been developed, and coached up right!

Comment 06 Jan 2014

I agree whole heartily, I love coombs as a person and motivator, but our DB's are some of the worst in the country, heck I watched B.C and North Carolina State DB's against Clemson, they looked leaps and bounds above our players.

WHY??

Because they have real DB coaches .

Urban in charge of QB development?  I mean if we look at Tebow , we all know he is not that accurate, and I am just beginning to wonder if we need a professional in here to teach our QB's to develop them into what they should be, and need to be!

**  I am a huge Tebow fan; and I do think very highly of him!  I believe he deserves more time to develop as well.

O-H-

Urban to start receiving blame ...for endorsing the defensive scheme, and game plans.

If he continues to endorse Fickell and Coombs, we are going to have great recruits; that can't play a lick of college D1 football, mark my words!

Comment 06 Jan 2014

If Urban decides to keep fickell, coombs and continue down this path of defense. He then puts his endorsement on them and their schemes; This is by far  one of the WORST OSU defenses in the History of Ohio State Football.

That being said at what point do you start to blame Urban for allowing them to stay aboard and continue this horrendous defensive plan.  It's very very simple it has not worked for over 2 years now, so fickell and coombs have had their chances. Some of the WORST defense I have ever , ever seen!!!!!

I believe something like this would work.

On 1 down and 10:  Noah, Bennett, Washington, Bosa

On 3rd down and more than 5 yards to go for a first:  Noah, Bennett, Bosa, Marcus

(this allows more pressure on the QB from 3 very good pass rushers on an obvious passing down.)

I would also rotate in on 2nd downs:     Miller, Hale, Shutt, & Holmes

( *these guys need to get playing time and will not hurt us when they are in the game.

This would give players the needed playing time and you could rotate different variations of the above on 2nd downs, depending on 2nd down and short or long.

I would do the same at LB: On passing downs I would have:

Johnson, Raekwon, Perry/ Booker

On running downs I would have: Perry, Grant, Tyquan Lewis  (Raekwon,Johnson,Mitchell)

As the season progress' I believe:  Holmes, Marcus, Spence, and Bosa are all standouts at getting to the QB.  The rest are run stoppers which can handle plugging the middle. I believe  Steve Miller is in one of those places where if he gains strength in the off season and loses 10 pounds he is a legitimate threat/force off the edge!

Defensive Backs:

CB: Eli Apple, Tyvis Powell, Doran Grant, Reeves, Webb.  & Safety: Bell.

I agree, I watched the games closely for someone to step up ,outside of themselves, and start beating on players helmets and trying to get some enthusiasm going on the defensive side of the ball, just was never there all year long!!!

Our DB's are playing in a soft zone coverage, and have been taught this style of play. It is a fact when DB's stay in this type of coverage over a long season they become soft and are not physical when it comes to tackling.

This is why we see so many missed open field tackles and guys looking around for someone else to make the tackle. soft zone breeds soft DB's

True Story:

I saw a 5'9" Defensive Back in a game against a 6'4" Wide Receiver. Completely out matched the WR weighed 215, and the DB weighed 170.  Not to mention the height advantage.  The WR was a top HS prospect went on to play D1;  the DB was a no name and was going to D3.  what I witnessed was simply a matter of will power!

The DB coach told him prior to the game that the WR he was going up against was going to hurt some of his family members and do specific bad things to them (the coach of course was using psycology to get the DB pumped up) and the coach made a bet with him, not to hurt the WR but to hit him every play as hard a s he could legally and try to take him off his game..

What do you think the result was ?

To make a long story short the WR (who went on to a stellar D1 career) said to his coach in the 3 rd qtr that he needed to come out of the game, he was tired of being hammered all game by this DB. The coach I found out later had seen what was happening and was hoping the WR would have asked out sooner, he asked hi WR did you do something to that kid or one of his family members?  ironic.

He of course said no, which he had done nothing, but in the mind of that DB he had it coming and he never let up, the WR ended the game with 2 catches for 6 yards total.  He was hurt on a few plays and had to come out, he was manhandled from the first snap until the beginning of the 3rd quarter when he asked to come out.  The DB went on to play at D3 school.

Mental preparedness is 90% of the game!

I watched in disbelief and later found out what the coach had done to motivate the much smaller DB and it worked he destroyed the much larger kid, because in his mind this was beyond football this was family!!

I believe we have guys in our defensive Backfield that could do the same thing to any WR if they were motivated to do so!

I wish someone would have waxed Sammy Watkins on his 1st catch of the game and everyone of the catches after that, but I only saw him really take one hit all night long in the end of the 3rd qtr.

Will somebody please HIT someone, like you want to take their head off, this is football !!!!

Great post and love the stats, they paint a perfect picture of what is wrong with our team, it is not the Offense , which can only get better with time.  However, when you score 35 points you should always win. Defense is the cornerstone of every championship team, without it you will never be a champion!

I am intrigued at the 102 pass defense ranking, does that put us below Akron or toledo??

Enough said...

what happened to the way our defense attacked and was planned out for the Penn State game. If anyone has time re watch that game, we played completely different that night than any other all season, It was mixture of great blitz packages and a swarming to the ball mentality, not sure what created that, but it was nice to watch!!!  Our DB's even played close up and personal with their WR.

Should stick with that plan.

Comment 05 Jan 2014

we can get all the talent in the world but bad coaching will kill you in the end!!!

Please prove me to be wrong!

Get it done, get these kids in here and make it happen, work, work and work!!!

Comment 05 Jan 2014

I will say this:

With the amount of talent we have recruited to the Defensive side of the ball, there is NO excuse for this Defense not to reach the heights of the 2002 buckeyes D and beyond for that matter.

we are stacked Defensively!!!

Now let's set back and watch the coaching or the lack thereof.

I am hoping that our defense should be stout over the next 3 years and beyond.

Next year we return a lot of players that got a whole lot of experience, so I don't want to hear the whole " we are young argument" Great coaches make strides with young players to prepare them to play in year 1.

Simple: Get it done!

I really don't think anyone here is saying they are trying to put in their resume for head coaching job. However, this post is meant for the freedom of expression and the freedom to vent feelings and diverse ideas.

Many people on this post have played college football or a college sport and can recognize specifics within the game that are no brainer's.

It is a no brainer when you keep doing the same types of defensive play calling and expect a different result, that is not fictional that is a FACT!

Most of the people on here on making very valid points and I am sure the coaching staff is aware of the problems.  I do believe this is healthy football conversation and people who can't handle that probably have not played the game before.

Just sayin...

edit: the 2 losses came against the 2 ranked teams that we should have beaten; and now that we have not; our program is looked at as that much more of an exaggerated/ over rated entity.

Comment 05 Jan 2014

I agree 100% just not physical enough defensively and I saw the same thing with our DB and LB for that matter not being able to shed blocks and not physical enough on the perimeter that is for sure.  Clemson and Michigan, and MSU do their homework and attacked our weakness.

Definitely got manhandled WR versus our DB not even close/  Have to hit the weight room yesterday and work on upper body strength and leg strength.  I watched as they seemed to get physically man handled on every WR screen. We simply have to shed blocks and make better tackles in space!

Comment 05 Jan 2014

Exactly !  If we keep the current Defensive cooridnators , are we to believe they change their way of coaching and schemes overnight...no and no!

They will try some different wiggles and so forth but ultimately we are looking at the same bend don't break defense next year and we will get torched in the passing game!

New Top Notch proven D Coordinator pay him the money and get these kids and these fans what they deserve a #1 ranked Defense in passing and rushing, we definitely have the talented players!

Comment 05 Jan 2014

It is easy for us to make assumptions that the Coach's are even as mad or exasperated as we the fans.  I mean they fully believed prior to MSU that they had gotten things fixed. Obvious to everyone.....NOT!!!!  I personally believe that Meyer an Offensive minded coach, wants to believe and trust in Fickell more than he probably should.   Relationships are formed, friendships are created even between family members, much harder to see clearly when you have done this.   I know I have been in that position.  So I don't believe that they will be at each other's throat's and pointing fingers, they will say we need to do this or that, and that is the problem.  It is not working.

Things need to change from a Defensive Philosophy and schematic approach.  We need to go to a man to man, with over the top coverage's on specific players and disguise our Blitz packags much much better and speaking of blitz packages where were they all night long????

I mean come on Man...MSU would have been blitzing off the edge with CB and safeties from the first snap of the game to throw boyd off his rocker,.,, what did we do...?????  Once again a coaching from a scared and don't get burned mentality is holding this defense back and is looking horrible in the process!!!!

He definitely needs to work on his touch passing, that last ball should have been at minimum 10 feet in the air.
