It comes with being a Buckeye. Keep them realistic and reserved, but always have them.
I'll take it one game at a time.
Expectations is a B1G word, maybe aspirations is more appropriate in July.
I hate to be rude, but, WELL DUH!
Do we act like Grady Hoke and just shoot for a 9-3 record?
There's a big difference between expecting a National Championship and believing your team has an excellent chance of winning one. I mean, if OSU loses mid-season are you guys going to give up on the rest of the season? I would be cautiously optimistic instead of arrogantly confident.
Those who stay will be CHAMPIONS!
There is also a difference between fan's expectations of a Brady Hoke led ttun and and an Urban Meyer led The Ohio State University.
"Anything less than flagrant is just playing grab ass!"
Excellent point that I just got done explaining to a TTUN fan from Carroll Ohio who visited me and my fam last night. It's not the fact that all or every OSU fan is "expecting" a NC this year. It's the concept that bc OSU went 12-0 when (lets face it) it really didn't matter what happened after TTUN game. That, from a coaching stand point, is very difficult to overcome and keep your players motivated and hungry if you can't earn a championship. That's the difference this year. Not to mention, OSU players are working together right now to get better. That may be the difference in not arrogantly expecting a championship or working your ass off to achieve it (may be a BIG reason why I think Johnny football and his team will not be that good this year. Shouldn't ole Johnny be working to get better???? Not to get off topic but it sort of coincides).
"I want a hungry team. I want a team that can't wait to get out there. I want an angry team! You're the Ohio State Buckeyes. You're an angry football team. You're a hungry football team and I'm proud to be your coach." UFM
It has nothing to do with Hoke or Meyer or Saban. I believe Michigan can win every game they play, but I certainly don't expect it. I'm hopeful for it, but, realistically, I'm pretty sure it's not going to happen. I'll be pissed off either way if they lose.
Hail: It won't be a wasted season if OSU losses a game. You can learn just as much from a lose as your team can from a win. With that being said, in the B1G, OSU or any team losses a game and you can kiss the NC good bye (ala 2006 and 2007 seasons). Unfortunately OSU kind of made that one loss B1G team a certainty not to be in the NC game at least for this season and possibly in the play off era too IMHO. It would take LOTS of variables to come into play in order for that to take place.
That is my expectation every year. Football season keeps me on the edge of my seat. Sure there are twists and turns, but damn it, this is Thee Ohio State University. With Urban and his recruiting, I am more excited than ever.
Remember to get your wolverine spade or neutered. TBDBITL
This program should always be in the discussion.....the tradition, the people, the excellence.
Not to mention the fanbase.
That being said, and having been a football and Buckeye fan all my life, I respect just how difficult it is to win one.
34 years between '68 and '02. So many teams so close - '73, '75, '79, '95, '96, '98, '06, '07...you get the point.
The heartbreaks make the triumphs that more special, and I wouldn't trade any of it. There's a fair share of football programs out there that would love to have what Ohio State has, to be where they are. Whether they'd admit it or not.
"Success - it's what you do with what you got" - Woody Hayes
Really great comment Hovenaut. Sums it up perfectly. I expect OSU to be able to compete for a NC pretty much every year...but I'm not sure I can say I ever expect a NC.
"Death created time to grow the things that it would kill" - Detective Rustin Cohle.
I'll be that guy.....
Technically, the school claims one from '70, and the '69 team was very close as well.... that's the same team that Woody said was his finest ever at OSU. The '74 team was even a few points from being undefeated.
But I get your point. Great post.
I agree....I didn't mention those teams as the ones I did list fell short without argument in my opinion.
The '74 team is probably the best 10-2 in history, four points from being undefeated...controversy in East Lansing, but they fell short in the Rose Bowl.
The '69 team, as much as it kills me to write it, were soundly beaten in their one loss.
The National Football Foundation awarded their NC upon Ohio State before the '71 Rose Bowl....which the Buckeyes lost to Jim Plunkett and Stanford, 27-17. The NFF award is a sore point to this day, even to former players from that team:
The 1961 team finished 8-0-1, and were awarded the NC by the Football Writer's Association of America but did not play in the Rose Bowl due the OSU Faculty Council voting against sending the Buckeyes. It was their opinion that athletics, football in particular, were overshadowing the academic standing of the university.
I knew about the loss to Stanford, but didn't know about the divisiveness in the locker room. Great article. Thanks for sharing that. Reminds me a little of the reported clashes between the under and upperclassmen on the '06 team before the blowout to Florida.
And I remember the '61 team not getting to go to the Rose Bowl. Woody flipped out, and I think the school administrators learned their lesson after that. Can you imagine a team trying to do that nowadays?
Everybody is chasing after something... even the guy out in front!
I think a program like OSU goes into each season with those expectations looming ahead, but it's best to take it one game at a time.
If we had a coach that wasn't after it every single day I'd be worried ... but we've got the head coach and the staff that can deliver one I think.
Unlike this former coach ...
Careful, this dude won a BCS bowl game (and our Ed Warriner was his OC).
Kansas must have gotten some great deal on oversize apparel. Nothing else can explain its coaching choices.

Poor Turner Gill didn't stand a chance there.
Here's a shot of him right before he got fired:
When you're predicted 0-1 losses for a regular season, wherein every game you're favored, that generally means you have title expectations.
Like most years, I expect us to compete for a title; but believing that any game is "in the bag" before it's been played is a fool's errand.
Every Fall. This is Ohio State, after all.

I certainly expect us to have a good shot at a MNC. I have thought that way leading up to almost every season that I've had the privilege of watching. When you are an elite program, you should have high expectations every year.
We don't give a damn for the whole state of Michigan, we're from O-HI-O!
When you are an elite program, you should have high expectations every year.
100% agree. What the hell is the point of being a fan of a historically elite program if you can't dream of a National Championship in July?
Nearly every major publication is predicting OSU to play in the NCG. Is it reasonable to expect Buckeye fans to have lower expectations?
We're Ohio State..... why would we expect anything less? Urbz didn't come here NOT to win national titles.
Ohio State should have National Championship aspirations each and every year.
Any top-notch program would have the same approach.
In old Ohio there's a team that's known throughout the land...
"Do you have national title expectations this fall?"
Well I'm not playing so I would have to say no, but if you were to ask if I expect the Bucks to win it all?
"Because I couldn't go for 3"
I definitely have National Title expectations going into this fall. However, I do not think that it will materialize with the 2013-2014 Buckeyes.
This year's team should be better than last year's. Probably even quite a bit better. It's just that going undefeated is so difficult and requires so many things to fall in your favor, and I think we may have gone to the "Good Luck Well" a few too many times last season. Something is bound to go against us this year like a key injury or that odd bounce that doesn't go our way during a close game.
I hope I'm wrong, but I don't think that any coach- even the great UFM- can start his career at OSU 26-0.
(Before anyone points out that you don't have to go undefeated to win the BCS Championship game, I would like to say that with our schedule this year, we do.)
I don't expect it, per se, because there are so many variable that have to fall just right. However, I do aspire and want it.
If they're giving out a National Championship for fan hijinks and shenanigans during a televised game at a drinking establishment; then yes, I expect to be in the game. If we're discussing the Buckeye's, I expect them to be in the conversation at the end of the year. I believe this team will give themselves the opportunity to be in the NC game. I think the desire, dedication, and the talent is there. It's tough to win them all, as we noticed last season. Think of the variables, fumbles ,interceptions, missed tackles, blown coverages, dropped passes, and God forbid, injuries. One game at a time. One beer, and one shot at time. I think that's really all we can ask.
An angry fan...rooting for an angry team...led by angry coaches
Well, of course! We've got a good shot to get there!
Absolutely! We definetly have national title hopes this year!!
Haven't been this excited for the season to start in all my years as an OSU fan. That's one bad ass team waiting to hit the field this year, and i think they can get it done baring any major injuries. Regardless of sanctions anybody and everybody would have loved to beat OSU last year and they didn't. #26-0
I voted yes, only to assume everyone that voted no, are the same folks who refuse to talk about a no hitter in case they jinx it.
With this teams talent and schedule it is certainly set up for a run at the crystal.
~Because we couldn't go for three~
I like football
I propose this question; "which game(s) do you expect The OHIO State Buckeyes to lose?" I don't expect them to lose one either. In that light I also have NC expectations. We manage expectations when we don't have faith that we will be able to manage a victory. Let's go Buckeyes, no matter the outcome OUR TEAM!
