Do you care about President Gee's latest off-color remark?

I said it yesterday and I'll say it again.  All this political correctness is getting way out of hand.

Amen to that! .. Oh, wait, was that not politically correct? I said Amen. Whoops.

Yeah, you're probably right that insulting people for their religion, race, sexuality, education or geographic locality is just fine and not a problem.

It's typical of our "Let's see what we can be offended by today" society we deal with. Gets really old. Hate to say the name but ESPN put it at the top on their site and within a couple hours had over 5000 responses and still going strong. OSU and anything of this nature is news.

My family is catholic, and a quarter of my family lives in Alabama. I am not offended at all. Stop being offended for other people, shut up and sit down.

Do I wish he hadn't said it, yeah maybe.  But I find it hilarious that he did.  Get back to being the best university president Mr. Gee and the rest of the world can continue to grasp at straws.

If this happened at Illinois or Indiana it wouldn't even make the news...

ESPN will grasp at anything OSU related and run with it.. I'm getting tired of them constantly trying to bring OSU down every chance they get.  It's almost as ESPN is run by a bunch of people like Mark May.

I (don't) care to watch BSPN and other sports "journalistic" types jump all over Gee/Ohio State, again.

Bucks43201's picture

You're spot on I say.
This reminds me of the media covering a politician. They pick and choose, and have their politicians they like to pile up on. Gee was clearly making a joke.
But the timing of the release -- what the hell's up with that? Seriously, this behind-closed-doors joke was from Dec. 5th, and somebody --- whoever gave it to the media, or the AP --- who had it and sat on it, waits until May 30th to release it...why? For what --- as an attempt to try to embarrass OSU because it's now the off-season. That's pretty sick. This is exactly how the corrupt media picks and chooses when it comes to their biased coverage of certain political candidates.
I really think it's the media who looks foolish here. Anybody who is genuinely butthurt about this needs to learn how to take a joke. So sick of the PC.

It's all part of the culture today.  Don't keep score, everyone gets a trophy, don't play war ball, don't say Merry Christmas and on and on and on.
Now you can't make jokes.  Well, I want everyone on SNL to apologize to me because I'm sure I can find something that will offend me this week (if I could stay up that late to even watch it that is).

It was a FOIA finding.  Since it was some kind of public body meeting, they probably had to document everything that was said and store it with someone at tOSU.  Once that happened, whoever sent out the next wide-ranging FOIA request and had time to go though it got it.  Now it's everywhere.

The comments themselves are overblown. Being a Catholic, I could care less and even laugh about what he's saying as a harmless joke. What's embarrassing is that he just keeps giving ammunition when it's very clear that people are out there waiting for him to say something off color and it's getting stupid. I love Gee and I hate to see him portrayed the way he is nationally, but at this point it's getting harder to defend him and it's really his own fault.

OSUs12-OH's picture

The thing that bothers me is this guy is portrayed to be above intelligence kind of person.  However even my own children know not to open their mouths in front of a room full of people and say things in a negative manner or especially in a bigotry style to boot (whether it was true or not).  There's a concept called a filter and Mr. Gordon Gee has missed the memo.  I'd say fire his ass trustees please...time for someone else to run OSU.  I'm personally tired of him.  It seems to be a yearly thing nowadays and I'm done with this pompous ass IMHO.
I seem to be in the minority on this one but screw it.  To say this is overblown gives segue to us feeling like anyone can say what they want or they're above the law, because it's the president of OSU or a Head Coach of football for instance (Tress situation).  Everyone needs to learn from their mistakes and thinking one can do and say what they want was exactly what got OSU in trouble in the first place.

"I want a hungry team. I want a team that can't wait to get out there. I want an angry team! You're the Ohio State Buckeyes. You're an angry football team. You're a hungry football team and I'm proud to be your coach." UFM

Idaho Helga's picture

Sticking with you on this one as on the other thread. Gee is an embarrassment.  When I can open my paper here in Idaho and tune in the local radio here and 100% think he is an ass, well, he is one.
What fun it is to have the only university prez who people know nationally (other than Donna S. at Miami) yet only because he has foot in the mouth disease.   Buckeyes can think he's cute all you want but outside of Ohio people are scratching their heads on why we keep this guy.
I understand his predecessor was horrific, but good lord, that doesn't justify keeping a guy who is in the national media REPEATEDLY for all the wrong reasons.   He keeps saying he doesn't know anything about sports then spouts off something stupid sports related.
He is making bulletin board material for foes everywhere.  He should be fired.

Crimson's picture

Just because you don't like hearing about someone doesn't mean they should be fired.  Nothing he has done devalues a degree from tOSU.

GoBucks713's picture

Can a little dorky guy in glasses and a bow tie really be a bully?
Nope.
The comment about Louisville could have easily been taken out of context. That could simply just be his comment on the fact that the B1G holds it's academic standards much higher than other conferences.
As far as the SEC learning to read and write, don't they kind of deserve the ribbing? It's a conference that dominates the ESPN landscape, they call themselves academic institutions. Shouldn't these schools be more worried about academics than Saturday ticket sales? I wonder if this also has something to do with him taking a shot at Vanderbilt too since he got jerked around there for not bringing in the big sports draw like OSU had, which really he had nothing to do with.

Also, who cares what the guy says? Is OSU one of the top univerisities in the Nation? The last time I checked, yes. It seems to me the guy may fire off at the gums a bit too much sometimes, but in my opinion, let him say what he thinks. Higher learning is brought on by debate, not sensorship.
And political correctness is the bane of humor. Just saying.

The SEC calls the B1G slow. Fair game.
Gee calls the SEC dumb.  Frothing-at-the-mouth OUTRAGE! How DARE you?!
Sounds about right.
Look, Gee is a phenomenal fund raiser, but the dude just needs to stick to that and drop his stand-up routine.  Not because I've been offended by anything he has said, but because most of it is such low-hanging fruit that even Larry the Cable Guy would consider it lowbrow humor.

OSUs12-OH's picture

I'm not going to defend someone who know's how to act. He's what age?  Stop defending him...he continues to make OSU look bad with his comments.  Personally...I think he should stick with being the universities president and keep his mouth shut. No one cares what his opinions are and he does nothing but hurt OSU's reputation when he speaks out like he has over the last five years.  Isn't his job to make the university look good?  Does this make OSU look good?  May be that will help some understand my point.
Edit: I don't care what he says about the SEC.  I think we're missing the point of why ppl were offended.  It wasn't the mighty SEC comments...it was the bigotry towards ND and catholics.  I used to practice....don't now and don't care what everyone's opinion is on them.  But do you really think saying this in front of a crowd was a good idea...???  Please stop guys...this makes us look worse.  What if it were something directed towards African Americans and all the racist things that come with that (fried chicken and all this and that)  I think this would be a TOTALLY different story.  Just saying...

To be clear this wasn't a "crowd" it was a closed meeting.  Probably not much more than 20-30 people in attendance.

I may get a lot of heat for this and it is not my intent to violate the commenting policy, this is just my general opinion regarding it all. I don't see the issue with poking fun or joking around regarding any affiliation, so long as it isn't malicious. Every single affiliation (race, religion, political party, etc.) has their quirks and I think it is fine to make a few wise cracks about them. For example, to me it is perfectly acceptable to make jokes about all black (african americans) people liking fried chicken and all white (caucasion/european americans) people liking mayonnaise. Neither statement is racist in my opinion, it is just a general observation that everyone should be able to get a little laugh out of, again so long as there is no malice behind the statements. I think if everyone would just lighten up a little bit about jokes regarding stereotypes it would actually bring us all closer together. Instead the uber-sensitivity drives a wedge between everyone.

this is a little off topic, but what do I see when I click on 11W this morning, next to the Gee poll?  An add for University of Louisville. LOL

themostbrian's picture

Yeah, all of you are probably right that insulting people for their religion, race, sexuality, education or geographic locality is just fine and not a problem.
There's probably no way for that to be an issue, right? I mean, who would be offended if their religion, race, sexuality, level of education or geographic locality was elevated to the central point of their personhood and then insulted? You're all probably right.
Yeah.
Oh, wait. I'm not a f*cking idiot.

Do you know what my biggest problem with Gee is?  It is that he is gumming up my 11W with a bunch of political/religious talk.

CentralFloridaBuckeye's picture

I love Gee, but really I'd like to see him stop making comments.  Just because of the recent past.  Things get blown way out of proportion.  I understand that he's just joking on some of those things and that a lot of people can't take a joke.  I live down here in Florida and today at the gym I heard a couple of Florida fans that couldn't stop talking about this for a good 5 to 10 minutes.
We just need to keep recruiting and hardening the football team.  Then unleash hell and destroy whoever we end up playing in a major bowl!  I do hope it is a Florida team and we annihilate them just for personal reasons.
Go Bucks!!

Geraffi's picture

I'm shocked and, honestly put off by the responses on this topic. I think so many of you are missing the point. The president of a damn fine university has once again insulted people in a public forum. He is an educated man and the leader of a great institution, and as such should know better than to make the stupid and inflammatory statements that he too frequently makes.
I understand that pc issues are completely overblown, but educational leaders need to be more mindful. He's not a 20 year old undergrad. He is the highest ranking official of one of the greatest universities in the country. The University deserves to be better represented.

Crimson's picture

Gee does what he does.  What he does is make funny, off-color remarks that rake in millions of dollars of donations.
If you think Gee is a bad president, then get to know any other university president.  They may be more PC and less "embarrassing" to their universities, but they don't do their job nearly as well as Gee does.  We hired him twice for a reason.

Geraffi's picture

Certainly true, but it doesn't justify his behavior.

WildMan Leather and Lace's picture

Why are we making national headlines because of dumb comments spoken by our university president?  This guy needs to remove the bow tie and shut his mouth.  Stop acting like a clown and embarrassing our fine university.
