Oh! The Places You Will Go!

The first OSU Spring Commencement post-Gordon Gee goes down Sunday in Ohio Stadium with Hardball's Chris Matthews delivering the commencement address.

Admission into the stadium will be $20 at the gate, or $12 in adva-hahaha just kidding; the athletic department had nothing to do with this. Admission is free for anyone who wishes to attend.

The stadium opens at 10am, seating is first-come first-served and the proceedings should be concluded within two hours.

You can watch the ceremonies streaming live here or just swing by Woody Hayes Drive if you're in the neighborhood. Temperatures are expected to be in the 60s with a slim chance of precipitation.

To all Buckeyes walking with their papers tomorrow: Congratulations! You may have finished school, but trust us - you'll never truly graduate.

I still have my tam from over 20 years ago.  I painted "Beer Me" in scarlet on top.  Sat next to a cool dude who snuck in a bottle of champagne ( I had my boda).  Good times!

Great job by the university choosing a non-divisive figure to close out the careers of its graduating student body.  I hear next year they are looking at Alex Jones.

Time and change will surely show how firm they friendship... O-HI-O.

I can understand when it's someone who may be seen as divisive when it's the President or Former Secretary of State, but Chris Matthews? Really? We can do better. But whatever, the speakers a footnote anyway, congrats to the grads! O-H!

Yeah, it would be sick to get a former Speaker of the House's Chief of Staff...

Oh wait.

I understand that people are upset, Chris Matthews is a pundit, and as such, he is hated by just about everyone who disagrees with his views. But this isn't a political speech, it's a graduation speech. It's going to be full of vague optimism, anecdotes about his life, and graduation cliches.

Let's not forget that, before his pundit career, he had a pretty interesting life. He was in Africa with the Peace Corps as a college student, then he was a cop in Washington DC. From there, he started volunteering for congressional campaigns, ran one of his own, lost, and settled in as a chief of staff, then he worked for the Speaker of the House during the Reagan years.

So, it'll be full of "Oh, you have to work with people you don't like" and "Don't be afraid to take risks" and "You are the future" and other cliches. These speeches never get political.

Again, I know that people hate his show and his views. That's fine. I don't think I've ever watched it, I tend to stay away from pundits, but he's got a cool backstory and it's a pretty inconsequential thing.

Also, this isn't Ohio State taking a political stand. I've seen people say that OSU is being biased by picking Obama and Matthews back-to-back. Well, in the last 15 years, we've also had John Boehner, George W Bush, John McCain and a bunch of other political figures. And media figures like Brian Williams.

When I walked in this morning and saw the flag was at half mast I thought, "Alright, another bureaucrat ate it." but then I saw it was Li'l Sebastian. Half mast is too high. Show some damn respect.

Prominent speakers since 2000

  • Bill Cosby
  • George W Bush
  • Christopher Reeve
  • John McCain
  • Bill Clinton
  • Brian Williams
  • John Boehner
  • Jack Hanna
  • Barack Obama
  • RL Stein

Again I say, political affiliation of the speaker does not matter, as the nature of the speech is not going to be political. I'm sure the higher-ups at OSU would be irate if any of their speakers used their speech to push political talking points.

They don't pick a political speaker and say "Oh yeah, go up there and talk about whatever you want." I'd imagine that the offer to come speak is contingent on following a set of guidelines.

It's OSU's job to find interesting and prominent speakers, and just looking at that list, I think they've done a good job.

I wanna see Chris Hansen. I used watch a lot of 'to catch a predator.' Sick people but it was funny as hell when he popped out and started talking to them. Someone walked into the set up one time wearing michigan garb.

And then I told her...i'm no weatherman, but tonight's forecast is calling for several inches!

Owl, thanks for providing that list: one thing we can all agree on, Ohio State is a pretty darn amazing place to pull three presidents of the Unites States and the current Speaker of the House over the course of the past decade. And anywhere that has Bill Cosby AND Jack Hannah is pretty much the best place on Earth.

Of the people on your list Bad Owl, I think Bill Cosby is the most conservative, ironically.

Anyway, back to football.

That is a pretty good list, and some huge names. But just judging by his ratings, I'd venture to say Matthews does not belong on that list. Few people really know who he even is and of thosethat do know him, half are gonna be pissed about it. Either way, congrats to those who graduated today you earned it. Wish they woulda got a better name you though, lord knows THE Ohio State University has the ability to make it happen.

+2 HS
TheBadOwl's picture

It's worth mentioning that those are only the prominent ones since 2000, I didn't recognize most of the names. Also, Matthews's speech was pretty fantastic today, he didn't use it to push political points, he gave a nice inspiring speech with some cool anecdotes about the backstories of Reagan, Obama, Teddy Roosevelt and Bill Clinton. Talked about how you need to go out there, not be afraid, and go take a chance.

When I walked in this morning and saw the flag was at half mast I thought, "Alright, another bureaucrat ate it." but then I saw it was Li'l Sebastian. Half mast is too high. Show some damn respect.

I wonder if he got a thrill up his leg when he was invited?

+9 HS

I could care less what his political views are I'd say the same thing if it were Bill O'Reilly, but it seems odd when Sinclair Community College in Dayton can get a better commencement speaker than The Ohio State University. And if you think little of Governor Kasich call former Governor Strickland.

Congrats grads and welcome to the real world!!!

It will be interesting to hear how Chris Mathews works out... Not a huge fan of his show but curious as to what he is like as a public speaker!

How hard is it not to bring politics into this thread? Here's a pro tip: If your'e going to type something political, erase it and type "Congratulations to all graduating," instead.

11W welcomes fans from every political party (especially the Jedi Party) and talking politics is honestly the quickest way to ruin any conversation, whether here, somewhere else or IRL.

nm_buck's picture

if say.... rush limbaugh would have done the speech (not bloody likely) would you expect 11W nation to refrain from political commentary about it?

I look at it this way -

Every single week we get at least one complaint that we don't carry XXXL, XXXXL or XXXXXL t-shirts (not a typo). I have a response that immediately comes into my head. Probably like the scorching hot ones that come into so many of your heads when you see "Chris Matthews."

But instead of making that comment, I remember I'm not five years old and I keep it sheathed. It's not difficult at all to bite one's tongue.

Your political comments are unwelcome and inappropriate. Always and forever. No one here gives a fuck about your hot political takes. I have zero patience with this very clear and long-standing rule and have no problem deleting accounts without warning.

My son graduated from the College of Optometry yesterday, and it was very cool...I thought Chris Matthews did a helluva job, and imo, he was one of the best keynote speakers I've heard in quite a while.
