No player in college hockey had a bigger week than Ohio State goaltender Christian Frey. The Arlington, Texas native played a key role in the Buckeyes’ upset of two top 10 teams. He also recorded the first shutout of his collegiate career. Both the NCAA and Big Ten Hockey have recognized his outstanding performance by naming him their First Star of the Week.

The odds were stacked against OSU in the Florida College Hockey Classic as the team faced consecutive games against highly ranked opponents. However the Buckeyes, backed by Frey’s 30 saves, rallied to defeat then No. 4 Boston College. The team kept the momentum rolling with an 8-0 stomping of then No. 8 Cornell. Frey was once again integral to the team’s success, turning aside all 27 of Big Red’s shots. For his efforts, the junior netminder was named MVP of the tournament.

This marks the third time a Buckeye has been recognized by the conference in 2015-16. Frey is second Ohio State player to win the Big Ten’s top weekly star. He is also the first Buckeye to earn national honors.
