Ohio State put together a solid game tonight to defeat the Canisius Golden Griffins 4-2.

Unlike last night, the Buckeyes were ready from the first drop of the puck. Their effort and energy paid off. Following a faceoff scramble, Nick Oddo put a rebound past the Canisius goaltender.

OSU built on their early lead. The Bucks controlled much of the play over the final two frames. In the final forty minutes they outshot the Griffs by a 28-11 margin.

Darik Angeli found the back of the net at the 6:14 mark of the second period. The goal was his first tally of the season. Oddo added his second score of the night in the opening minutes of the third period.

A few seconds later Kevin Miller netted the Buckeyes’ fourth goal of the game. It was the freshman’s first collegiate goal. He also recorded an assist in the game.

Matt Tomkins started the game in net for the Buckeyes. He was a steady presence throughout the night, stopping 20 of the 21 shots he faced. Canisius nicked him for a shorthanded goal late in the third period to spoil his shutout bid.

Ohio State return to the Schott next week. The Bucks take on Nebraska-Omaha on Friday and Saturday. Both games are scheduled for 7pm starts.

Freshman Lauren Spring opened the scoring midway through the second period. The goal was her first as a Buckeye. That turned out to be all the support goalie Kassidy Sauve would need. Sauve turned aside all 18 shots she faced in the contest. It was her third shutout of the season.

Captain Sara Schmitt added a pair of insurance goals late in the third period. The first of these came on the power play which was nice to see given the team’s early struggles in that area. Schmitt put a bit more icing on the cake, hitting the empty net with six seconds left on the game clock.

The ladies move to 5-3-0 on the season and 3-3-0-0 in the conference. They are on the road next week to face Minnesota State.
