The Buckeyes improved some aspects of their game tonight, but the result was the same. Miami won the game 2-1 and swept their second straight series against Ohio State.

OSU 1 0 0 1
MIA 0 2 0 2

The game began well enough. The Bucks got on the board first when Anthony Greco scored his fourth goal of the season. Tanner Fritz took a shot on the power play. A rebound was coughed by Miami goalie Jay Williams and Greco put it home. Darik Angeli also recorded an assist on the play.

The RedHawks took control of the game early in the second period. Miami outshot the Buckeyes by a wide margin over the final two stanzas, registering 48 shots to Ohio State’s 11.The RedHawks struck twice in the middle frame. The goals came in a span of a minute and a half from Louie Belpedio and Alex Wideman. Wideman’s goal was his second in as many games against the Buckeyes.

OSU goalie Christian Frey did his best to keep his team in contention. He stood on his head in net, stopping a career high total of 60 shots in the game. The Bucks mustered some pressure on the Miami net in the waning minutes of the contest. Unfortunately they weren’t able to solve Williams a second time.

At first glance this game may not look like much of an improvement, but Ohio State did cut their penalty count down. The Buckeyes allowed Miami just one power play opportunity. They also blocked a ton of shots, 27 to the RedHawks’ 6, which you could take as a positive. (Though you could also take it as OSU never having the puck. That would also be accurate.)

Small victories notwithstanding, this was a bad weekend for Ohio State. The Buckeye goalies were under heavy fire throughout both games of the series and the team had buckets of trouble gaining and maintaining puck possession.

The Bucks have a bye next week. They’ll work some things out and be back at it on October 31 when they visit Canisius.

The Ohio State women completed a sweep of Bemidji State this afternoon. Danielle Gagne tallied her second goal of the season with assists from Melani Moylan and Cara Zubko. It was all the goal support Kassidy Sauve would need. The freshman goalie recorded 15 saves in her second shutout of the season.  The ladies also have a bye next week. They return to the ice on Halloween night when they face St. Cloud State at the Schott.
