Ohio State fell one spot to No. 7 after a solid win over Navy. Florida State maintained their grip on the No. spot.

Michigan State, at No. 6, is the Big Ten's highest ranked team. Nebraska is ranked No. 18, and Wisconsin fell to No. 19 after their loss to LSU.

Michigan, despite dismantling old nemesis Appalachian State, failed to make the rankings.

Here is the full table:

RANK SCHOOL POINTS FIRST PLACE VOTES

The only thing I can think of is if we dropped how Bama and FSU didn't drop one spot either....

Bama and FSU didn't lose one of the best players in the country two weeks before the season.

Although both came awfully close to losing to unranked opponents..

EDIT: I am not wearing goggles and do not think tOSU proved to be anything higher than what they are but I do think MSU and Texas A&M both should be up the list a little higher!

No, but Alabama did lose two starters for 2 and 4 weeks at least. Along with the questions at QB I don't think they should have maintained their spot. Then again, it (the poll) will sort itself out in the long run.

Mortc15's picture

Bama doesn't even have a legit starting option at qb right now. They lose 3+ games if the qb play isn't any better than it was Saturday.

Bama's quarterbacks isn't their problem.  The guy went 24/33 for 250yds and one interception.  That's with a 50-yd drop from a wide open Christion Jones that should have resulted in a TD.  Now, I'll agree that the stats look a little better than he did, but they do support my point that the QB isn't the problem.  Andy Vance alluded to it below somewhere:  the defense looked pedestrian.  If the linebackers and secondary don't play better (including getting in the right formation) then there are 2 losses on that schedule at least.  My guess is that those issues get worked out (at least markedly improved) by the Florida game.

On the bright side (for us Gumps, anyway), it looks like we found a kicker!  4-4 with 3 being well over 40yds.  Color me satisfied for now.

Oh, and I need to add that I'll agree with most of you:  Bama should have dropped a few notches, I'd have no problem with that.  Tamu and Georgia look like the teams to beat right now.

You're right, so what is the excuse for FSU and Bama playing down in week 1? Using that logic we are not judging based on performance but rather on who is not on the field.

Yeah, well…that’s just like, your opinion, man.

We didn't drop because we "struggled" with Navy. We dropped because Miller is injured.

+1 HS

We didn't drop because we "struggled" with Navy. We dropped because Miller is injured.

I agree. However, that doesn't mean this is the right answer. The correct way to look at this poll is not that we're a worse team without Miller, but rather something along the lines of "Is Michigan State better than Ohio State?" I'm not sure you can say yes to that question based on a pretty solid performance by a very young Ohio State squad, compared to a pretty dominant MSU performance over a completely overmatched opponent.

Likewise, Oklahoma should almost certainly be ranked higher than Alabama, both because they won their last meeting (oh, how quickly we forget when Alabama loses, eh coaches?), and because Bama looked pretty darn "meh" in their contest against a WVU squad that went FOUR AND EIGHT last season. Auburn gets a pass for beating a nobody in convincing fashion. Oh wait, they played Arkansas you say? Yeah, they get a pass for beating a nobody in convincing fashion.

+8 HS
buckeye4life050233's picture

Auburn only won convincingly because their coach decided to lift the full game suspension they had given the QB Nick Marshall after the 1st half because Arkansas was hanging with them

+5 HS

It didn't. Malzahn never revealed how long the suspension was. Most local media figured it was about a half.

I agree with this perspective.  I think a good loss is more telling than a pointless cupcake win.  If MSU loses close to Oregon, and you genuinely believe Oregon is the #4 team, then why not keep MSU at 6?  I mean, all that would have been proven is that Oregon is slightly better than MSU, so Oregon should remain ranked slightly higher.

Because they play Georgia in 2 weeks... #SEC

So once Georgia beats them, they can point to a win over a ranked opponent. Like they try to do with every SEC team. I'll be surprised if they drop out of the rankings wen after Georgia beats them because then they play Vandy who they should beat and then Mizzou two weeks after. Another "top 25" matchup.

To be fair, the Buckeyes almost never play great in their opener, especially the first half. Oddly enough I think the one exception that comes to mind is 2011.

...and Michigan still sucks.

+1 HS
Bucksfan's picture

I'm not going to get all bent out of shape.  I'm just going to say that the Week 1 poll is only slightly less ridiculous than the preseason poll.  Texas A&M should probably be the #1 team in the country, and they got zero first place votes.  Michigan State jumped Ohio State, despite beating FCS Jacksonville State compared to a 17-point win over a Navy team that might win out.  Whatever Gary Andersen is doing up there in Madison, it has absolutely nothing to do with winning football games, so Wisconsin shouldn't even be ranked...and neither should LSU.

It's as if the coaches that vote in this poll didn't actually watch any football.  Imagine that!

At this point rankings mean nothing. I'm not even sure why there are polls this early. We all watched some good stuff, some bad stuff, and some what in the wide wide world of sports was that, stuff this weekend. I'm not sure where any team should be ranked right now. To me right now these rankings should have asterisks next to each school with the footnote "More information needed."

If polls are going to exist this early in the season, they should be volatile. UGA and TAMU showed in week one that they are teams to take seriously. In week two, the big showdown between Oregon/MSU, and the Stanford/USC game will provide a little more clarity for the top ten. Week by week, we'll get a better picture of how good or bad these teams are. No point in worrying now.

OSU dropping one spot is fair. I was surprised that that was all they fell, because national media tends to hate the Buckeyes – though, USA Today's poll is always a bit fonder than the AP.

steveoz49's picture

It's so early to even worry about rankings.  We just have to take care of our business and the rest should sort itself out.  I'm more concerned about VT than I am where or how far we fell after week 1.  Oregon and MSU, one of those teams will fall behind us as long as we take care of VT.

Not worried one bit.... yet.

HENRYJONESJR's picture

The only reason we probably did not drop more was b/c of the poor showing of the other teams.  Can only control one thing and that is win your games.

The Rill Dill's picture

We DID control our 'one thing'---we WON.........and dropped.  Until we start SMASHING teams, this will continue.  I don't agree with it, but that doesn't change it.

mrspray's picture

I'm ok with a small drop this week - solely because Miller was still part of the picture when the rankings initially came out. Either way, if the Buckeyes keep taking care of business, this should sort itself out in the end.

THEOSUfan's picture

The guy who should be most offended is Braxton Miller.  Ohio State is ranked 6th with him and 7th without him.  More evidence that polls, especially the coach's poll, has some strange twists and turns.  But it does all mostly square up at the end.

ShowThemOhiosHere's picture

This is probably generous to OSU just because I don't think OSU is a top 5 team without Braxton until they show otherwise.  Though I will say that MSU beating up a cupcake shouldn't put them ahead of OSU.  OSU would get dropped last year for shit like that.

Class of 2010.

+1 HS
buckeye phi's picture

Realistically, it's hard to argue with being ranked behind Michigan Sate right now.  The last time the two teams met - at a neutral site - Sparty won by ten points.  OSU had a veteran offensive line, a bruising NFL calibur running back and the B1G Player of the Year at quarterback.  As everyone knows they're all gone, now.  This year's new bunch didn't do much in week one to impress the voters.

An argument can be made, though, that none of that really matters.  First of all - this year's team will have an entirely different look.  There will be no speed demon with a cannon for an arm at quarterback - but the Buckeye faithful had to like what they saw from J.T. Barrett in the opener - calm, cool and collected - only one glaring error.

The new o-line started out rather shakily as many expected it would, but seemed to play better as the second half progressed.  Because of the inconsistent line play, Barrett was not able to put the speed he's surrounded by on full display - but there were flashes of it.

The major weakness of last year's team - that awful pass defense - has, hopefully, been addressed.  If so, this team could be very special - because it seems to truly be a team.  The players' reaction to Miller's injury was quite impressive.  It appears to have helped them pull together.

In that regard, perhaps the lower the expectations are from the pollsters - the better - at least, in the early going.  They still have to be in the top four at the end of the season, after all.

But if Michigan State beats Oregon saturday - and if both MSU and OSU keep winning - the Buckeye's will have the opportunity to impress the voters when it really counts - in November.

Let 'em disrespect us now.

BHT's picture

The only problem I have is the fact that we dropped. I know the first rankings came out with Braxton, and we don't have him this season, but we played like a team that should have stayed where they were. That being said, I think that we are the rank that we are supposed to be. This poll looks a lot better (more fair) than the AP poll.
