Trevor Thompson's Appeal to Play Immediately for Ohio State Denied

Trevor Thompson’s appeal to play immediately for Thad Matta and Ohio State has been been denied, a source close to the team confirmed to Eleven Warriors Sunday.

Thompson, a sophomore transfer from Virginia Tech who filed a hardship waiver with the NCAA last spring, will have to wait until the 2015-16 season to help give the Buckeyes a much-needed inside presence.

The 6-foot-11 center tweeted this last night:

An Ohio State spokesman did not immediately respond to request for comment.

Yet DGB has a chance to play right away...

I think they flip a coin or do rock-paper-scissors (though that may be too complex for them).

The REAL reason this petition was rejected by the NCAA is that Ohio State and the Big Ten are major players in the eventual break up and/or diminishing powers of the great and mighty NCAA.

Then please explain how Oklahoma got DGB passed through waivers when they have every bit the status of OSU.

Honestly this is a good thing. We have 2 graduating seniors this upcoming year with Lee able to play the 5. Then after this year, Thompson can command the C spot for the next 3 years instead of 2 as he would have limited minutes this year.

Agreed, it's probably a good thing for the program but it may or may not be a good thing for Thompson himself.  However, he would be hard pressed to find a lot of meaningful minutes this year with Amir and Lee ahead of him for sure.

Endure, young man.

Hey, Patrick! Thanks for keep 11W readers informed about OSU hoops.

What was the basis of Trevor's appeal?

Our honor defend, we will fight to the end !

If you can't win your conference, just quietly accept your non-playoff bowl game.

Of course this was denied--the NCAA was too busy approving Devin Gardner's extra year after that phantom back injury of his.

At the very least, the NCAA is consistent....about being inconsistent.

Thompson denied for father health reasons, but Dorial Green-Beckham who was run out of Missouri for numerous arrests will likely get to play immediately for Oklahoma this year due with NCAA and their infinite wisdom

Same crap different day with the NCAA.  Mike Mitchell should be eligible to play for Texas Tech this year too.

Seriously?  Why does it seem every other school gets their medical and hardship requests granted and ours get f@#$ed by the NCAA.  Don't want to seem like I'm whining here but damn, give me a break!

DGB can play right away, but guys like Trevor and Mike Mitchell have to sit out? Christian Bryant can't get another year? Terrelle Pryor has to sit 5 games, Josh Gordon potentially sits a year, yet Ray Rice sits 2 games?

Not sure what Josh Gordon and Ray Rice have to do with the NCAA.

I wish we could downvote the NCAA.

However, we can look forward to Thompson, Bell and Giddens in 2015. That's a nice trio of post players.

I can't wait for Ty Isaac to get his waiver to play immediately at Michigan, because NCAA

Ohio State IS the NCAA. Along with the rest of the universities. NCAA was  invented to pay athletes below market wages and keep most of the profits for the universities. NCAA and the concept of amateurism it tries to peddle is a sham. I saw that 1 hour special on BTN in promotion of Dave Revsine's new book about the origins of college football and the panelists, one of whom was Stanley Jackson, said as much.

Scarlet_Lutefisk's picture

Well hell if Stanley Jackson said it, it must be true.

I think I will just wait for Joe Germaine to weigh in on the issue.

This waiver had little to no chance of being approved and Thompson and Thad new full well it would not be but hey they took a shot. With Lee added to the mix we hopefully will not need him this year.

I'm writing a paper on paying college athletes as I type this and in some research I found that only athletes in football, basketball, and hockey have to sit out a year if they transfer. In all other sports they can transfer once and not have to sit out, but if they transfer again then they must sit out. WHAT A JOKE

Someone  must be very sick. AND I.U. would have been much closer.

mtrotb's picture

Quite frankly getting sick of these kids regretting their decisions when they pick their first school and while they may be some family medical issue, it is usually minor.  Having surgery is not that big of a deal in most cases.  If Thompson truly wanted to be close to family, then go to Butler which has better basketball anyways.  If he wants to go here, then sit out just like all the other transfers have done every year at every school.

I don't quite understand all the negativity about this. It's a classic case of "let's give it a shot". If he wanted to be closer to family, there are a number of major universities closer than OSU. It would've been nice for it to get approved, but I don't think this is a great case to bash the NCAA.

Bummed that you didn't get the waiver, Trevor.

Maybe you can get on Amir's ##$# and force him to become the best basketball player he can be, too.
