Miami Valley Gaming Gets In On the Trolling-OSU Gravy Train

After the Dayton Daily News made headlines with its own trolling headline after Ohio State bowed out of March Madness against the Dayton Flyers, the Miami Valley Gaming company took about 72 hours to create this masterpiece:

Thanks, Michael, I hadn't noticed the buckeyes used to form "16."

I guess it's a form of free advertising at this point, but Miami Valley Gaming might end up taking the L in the long run. After all, there are a lot more Ohio State fans than Dayton ones.

i am happy for Flyers.  i grew up in Dayton in my childhood and hated the city but loved my Flyers.  Remember Roosevelt Chapman in the 80's?  prob too young to remember but i grew up watching that.  Then I became a Buckeye.  I hope Flyers beat Cardinals and reach elite 8 against (probably) the #1 seed.  That might be their last dance, but who knows...

More worried about OSU  next year and beyond.  This year, for the rest of the tourney, i am a fan  of Dayton

I berated Dayton a lot on here before the game against OSU, and I will always cheer for OSU if they play Dayton again, but it is cool to see them in the Sweet 16 since they pretty much sucked when I went to school there. The trolling is getting a little ridiculous but at the same time the fanbase hasn't had anything to be excited about in a long time.

gm3jones's picture

That is because they are a very passsionate bunch about there Flyers. My aunt lived right down the street from there and I would go to a few of there games (free tickets) and it was almost always full-- even when they was bad. It was actually a really good enviroment.

There is nothing more remarkable as learning to think better.

Its all cool because come the end of the week.....the will be sitting with 66 other NCAA teams. Home watching the Finals. It was a good run, handle it with class like you have been there before.

From the Treaty of Treason (currently pending before the Ohio General Assembly):

In penance for their uprising, the Board of Trustees of the University of Dayton shall offer up five males between the ages of 18-22 at a public "Reaping."

These Tributes will unite to form a "team," which shall be delivered to the custody of The Capitol (i.e, THE Ohio State University).  And then transferred to a public arena known as The Value City Arena at the Jerome Schottenstein Center, where they will play one game of "basketball" versus The Capitol's squad, assembled by Thad Matta, until a lone victor remains.

Henceforth and forever more this pagent shall be known as The Hunger Games--a yearly beatdown of the Dayton Flyers that will serve to remind the people of Dayton who the people of this State root for.

hodge's picture

This isn't a shot against OSU -- here's some insight from someone who lives here:

Miami Valley Gaming has had a running ad campaign in the area talking about the "Lucky Buckeye Co.", a company that's dedicated to manufacturing "lucky buckeyes" for the whole of the state, so that people can then use them to gamble at Miami Valley Gaming.  See below:

It's not a troll move towards OSU, it's marketing -- the connection is only there because Dayton beat the Buckeyes en route to their Sweet Sixteen berth.

+7 HS
DJ Byrnes's picture

The problem is the connection is too stark for marketing people to let this pass this underhanded. They knew what they were doing here.

Californian by birth, Marionaire by the Grace of President Warren G. Harding.

hodge's picture

Oh I'm sure that they knew it, but I don't think that it was a decision driven solely out of beating Ohio State; or really at all, for that matter.  I think that if they make it to the Sweet Sixteen without beating OSU, this same ad goes out -- because it's consistent with their branding strategy.  Beating Ohio State only improved the context, it didn't define it.

If anything, a shot at Ohio State would be out of context here, as the Flyers didn't advance to the Sweet Sixteen by beating Ohio State -- the "16" should have been written in oranges, while a separate ad should have gone out, congratulating the Flyers in "Making it to the Second Round", written in buckeyes.

Scarlet_Lutefisk's picture

The funny thing is that depending upon who printed the ad it could be taken as a gesture of support from the Buckeye nation.

Buckeye Knight's picture

I don't understand the short man syndrome in the SW part of the state (Cincy/Dayton).  I grew up in NW Ohio, we were under no impression that Toledo or Bowling Green were better in major sports than OSU.  Sure, they might have beaten an OSU team once in a blue moon, but to even compare the programs is a joke.  I personally cheer for any team from Ohio that makes in in bball or football (Dayton, Cincy, Toledo, BG, OSU, OU, whoever).  I think it's good for the state.

Dayton's little brother complex, ladies and gents. Gives em something to talk about now that they can't get all hot and bothered about playing Xavier a few times a year.

All that aside, congrats to UD for getting to the Sweet 16. Someone said it above: if you don't want to get trolled, don't lose the game. That being said (and I think I mentioned this in a post before the game was played) if you have UD friends, I strongly encourage you to cut contact with them for at least a year. You will probably never hear the end of this until the Flyers end up in the NIT next year.

Inferiority complexes!  Inferiority complexes everywhere!  I just have to laugh at these little guys - one win over OSU in something (an OSU team that wasn't even all that good, really) and they beat their chests like they just won it all.  Even though it makes them no more relevant than they were before and nobody will remember it by next year.  When OSU beats someone like Dayton, we forget about them and move on.

I am fine with it.  Ohio State doesn't want to lose to Dayton, then with superior talent, come out and play hard for 40 full minutes rather than go into "amir mode."  Dayton wanted the game more so they got it.  If this stings a bit, it should.

ibuck's picture

Dayton "fans" may well be the reason OSU rarely/never schedules them in men's hoops. A friend from Xavier says they hate Xavier and will show up to root against XU even if Dayton is not their opponent. Why would any school want to schedule a non-conference opponent whose fans' behavior is troublesome?

Let them enjoy their 2 wins and having Archie as their coach. It may not last very long.

Our honor defend, we will fight to the end !

If you can't win your conference, just quietly accept your non-playoff bowl game.

Well..I wish we would play them more often now and maybe that's what they are trying to encourage. I was cheering for Dayton to move on but some of this is getting on my nerves and I'd be fine with them losing. As someone stated..the more suprised/gloat you act by the accomplishment the more it says about what your expectations are. If we had beaten Dayton it would have been forgotten about rathery quickly. We've beaten Cincy, Xavier, Ohio..ect in various sporting events and I don't recall much chest thumping.  Like someone else here said..act like you've been there. Well we have..they have not.

Their (collective Flyer Nation) reaction to the win tells the story...beating the big dog is a big deal. I doubt much of the Flyer fanbase thinks Dayton would beat OSU consistently if they played more often. So they get to enjoy their win, we can wait until next year, and hopefully UD or another B1G team wins the whole dealio. Well, maybe not one particular B1G team...

Alright look you guys...I said above that I cheered for Ohio State last Thursday even though I went to Dayton. My fandom overtook my loyalty for my alma mater, and if they ever play again of course I'm rooting for the Buckeyes. And yes, I said some harsh things about the Flyers (and I was completely wrong about everything I said), but man you guys need to calm down. Flyer fans can be delusional as hell but they are also loyal and as crazy about the Flyers as most of us are about the Buckeyes. It's their first time being to the Sweet 16 in 30 years and they beat the king school of the state to get there. Gosh, how dare they rub it in a little. It's not classless, it's the same thing we do to Michigan and their fans on an almost daily basis. The city of Dayton is pretty much a wasteland that will hopefully one day recover, Flyer basketball is a fricken huge deal there. The entire community rallies around it. My friends from UD gave me shit about the game but it's in the past and I'm hoping Dayton can shock the wold. Just a bunch of sour grapes right now. We all (including myself) glorify Marcus Hall's gesture, but THIS is what is unforgiveable? Give me a bleeping break.

This banner has nothing to do with OSU anyway. It is the casino company which has out of state ownership, trying to promote their Golden Buckeye promotion. OSU is completely irrelevant to the ad and it would have been done no matter who UD beat to go to the sweet 16.  People are just way too sensitive. If people look for a reason to be offended, they are sure to find it.

Unky Buck's picture

Eh, couldn't care less. We lost to a team now in the Sweet 16. This wasn't a good OSU team and we likely would've lost to someone in this tournament anyway. Not a big deal if we're being trolled.

I don't think it is an inferiority complex. UD is a school of about 6,000 students compared to us with about 50,000? UD has great academics and good basketball. They are taking their moment to shine when they should. Everyone getting so upset should take a step back and relax. The city of Dayton lives and dies with basketball. Anyone thinking trolling us will hurt UD is very wrong. UD is a proud school that is on a different level than UC (saw that comparison) in terms of alumni support.

I agree with you, the Dayton media seems to be concentrating their efforts on downgrading the Buckeyes, which makes no sense for two reasons:

As you point out, why are they not talking about how great the UD season has been, more than the former negative focus on OSU?

For what it is worth the Miami Valley Gaming ad with the 16 Buckeyes is nothing to do with Ohio State, nor is it trolling OSU. Their "brand" or tagline is the "Golden Buckeye" since after all, Ohio is the Buckeye State. They are running a promotion giving away a Golden Buckeye to a progressive slot winner. Congratulating Dayton with Buckeyes, has absolutely nothing to do with beating OSU but solely meant to draw attention to their promotion. If OSU and Dayton never met and OSU were also in the Sweet 16, Miami Valley would have done the same thing....... Don't take it personal, it is not about OSU>

markymark69's picture

It was a one-point win in the last few seconds, in which OSU's shot rolled off the rim. Let's not make it like Dayton wiped up the floor with them, because they didn't it. It was two even teams and Dayton made one more play - be happy, but don't make it more than it is.  If it is a jab, that's fine, but remember "be careful how you plow someone else's field, because yours will be plowed one day."
