GIF: Flyers Fan Would Like You to Know that Dayton Owns Ohio

Dayton upset Ohio State 60-59 in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament Thursday. That's shocking, but only if this is the first Ohio State basketball game you watched this year.

None of that mattered to one obnoxious Dayton fan, who rushed over to tell the Ohio State players that Ohio is, evidently, Dayton's state now.

It's like the Wright Brothers just demonstrated flight to this man.

In fairness, this is most likely the high point of UD basketball for the next 10 years so you know, douches gonna douche.

yeah, Who cares. Let him have it. If beating a bad OSU team gets him that psyched, that shows how good he thinks his Flyers really are.

In other news, many Dayton fans have large inferiority complexes.

bucknut3011's picture

UD fans have a huge case of Napolean complex.  I can't stand to hear them go on and on about how they should beat UC or Xavier each year, and then... don't.  The guy is clearly a douche in the gif, but unfortunately, I know many other like it.  I've turned my phone off.

I think this is the case with pretty much most of the Non-Ohio State Ohio teams.  I avoid things like my facebook after games like this.  I grew up in Dayton so I have some friends on Facebook that definitely call themselves "fans" but never once mentioned them during the year until tooday.  Lots of bandwagon "fans".

So what would he have done if the UD player missed with 3.8 seconds left? This attitude by fans is becoming a problem that is getting worse all the time. Must be all they have in their lives, too bad. Look at the grief AC has taken the last four years for being the most hated player, as labeled by some. And it is this type of fan that is happy to deliver that hate towards him and other opposing players by whatever means necessary.

In all fairness, Ohio State does make more money at their spring game than the entire UD Athletic Dept. makes in a decade.  That's an exaggeration, but probably fairly accurate. Totally unrelated, but as an OSU grad and fan, it's all I've got right now.

That was one of the happiest parts of the game for me-- Thad so pissed off at Amir and his "t-rexxing" rebounds and lack of effort he sat almost the whole second half. Good to know Thad seen that and acted properly.

I can't blame that guy for being excited. Bouncing undefeated and #1 seed Ohio State in the first round made history this afternoon! No #16 seed has ever advanced before!! I'm glad he showed restraint, actually.

Oh wait, it was a #6/#11 matchup and Dayton squeaked out a win against a mediocre buckeye team that struggled all year with FTs, turnovers, jump shots, rebounding, making layups, and getting dunks to go down with regularity?

Things in Dayton must be worse than I thought.

The amount of Bandwagon Dayton fans (or just people that want a reason to hate tOSU) coming out of the woodworks right now is unreal.  Their fanbase is non-existent 98% of the year, and now that they didn't lose, all of a sudden they're all "Huge Fans" and "Super Proud".  Where were they last year when they didn't make the dance?  Band. Wagon.

Full disclosure I'm Columbus born and raised and a UD alum. Love both schools and 99% of the time my fandom doesn't overlap. Games like yesterday are both win win and lose lose for the handful of people like me.

Just because you don't know any UD fans doesn't mean they don't exist. The city of Dayton is basketball crazy, which is why they continue to have the First 4 in Dayton each year. They put 12,000 in the arena for play in games.

Every team has d-bag fans, no matter how big or small. No reason to hate on the rational ones for the behavior of the 2%ers.

I root for Ohio State in 99.9% of games.  Today was the exception, since I graduated from of the University of Dayton.  To be honest, I feel exactly like this guy did.  Yeah it was a little over the top, but so what.  I watched OSU all season and was constantly frustrated. They never wanted it.  They didn't feel like a team.  Plain and simple, Dayton wanted it more today and I couldn't be happier for them.

For those of you claiming all the bandwagon fans are coming out this week, give us a break, we literally only get to root our team on in the big dance about once every four years!! We deserve to get pumped up over a NCAA tournament win.  With all that being said:

With all due respect, Billy Donovan is a heck of a coach. And that team the bucks lost to had plenty of NBA talent on the roster. Enough to win back to back titles. Just a complete team top to bottom. Much like Florida's team this year. Donovan does a great job recruiting, developing and coaching his players. Its no surprise they are a perennial contender. A lot to be said for going 10 deep. Although I wish I could punch Scotty Wilbekin in the face. He has a face that just screams hit me.

I'll be honest here - I am not at all surprised that Ohio State lost yesterday.  They looked so disjointed and disinterested the past few weeks that if you didn't see yesterday coming, then I don't know what to say to you.  But there is no call ever to confront someone in an irrational manner, especially the losing team itself, after your team wins a ball game.  I want to share with you guys something that happened to me after an Ohio State loss.

I attended the 1996 Citrus Bowl in Orlando following the '95 season, the bowl in which our beloved Buckeyes played the Volunteers from Tennessee.  Eddie had just won the Heisman, and the Buckeyes had an explosive offense that season, but they just couldn't get anything going that day (due in part, we all later found out, to the fact that Cheatin' Phil Fulmer and UT wore illegal cleats on a day where the rain was constant and steady).  As a result, Ohio State lost, 20-14.  Eddie rushed for "only" 99 yards in that game, and walking out of the stadium that day, dressed in all of my Ohio State gear, I heard from no shortage of people walking down the concourse that the Vols fans knew that "Peyton wouldn't let them down next year when he won the Heisman like Eddie did the Buckeyes this year."  I heard this more than once, but I wouldn't take the bait.  (Side note: from everything I can see, Peyton Manning is a great guy, but because of those loudmouthed braggarts, I hoped Peyton wouldn't win the Heisman, ever, which he didn't.  It obviously hasn't affected his professional career, so Peyton ultimately wins, I won, and the UT fans didn't get to see him hoist the trophy.  All good, lol.)  But as we exited the stadium, I got separated from my party and ended up having to walk around the entire stadium just to find where we were parked.  Let me remind you, it had rained all day, and I was dressed very obviously in Ohio State gear.  It was taking me so long to find where we parked that the stadium lot was practically empty.  As I was walking and trying to find where the car was, a big conversion van drove about two feet from me (I kid you not) and hit a puddle of water so hard that it drenched me.  Let me remind you again, the parking lot was EMPTY.  This van could've taken a wider berth around me or even dropped speed to avoid drenching me, but it hit the puddle full on, and I was SOAKED.  It was a van full of UT fans, and that moment right there sealed the deal for me.  (1)  I wish nothing but a pox on UT and their school for the poor treatment sent my way that day, and I have enjoyed the struggles their football team has endured the past few years, although you will never catch me rubbing a Vols fan's face in it.  (2)  I would never, EVER, resort to douchebag status in the face of a losing team's fans, players, or supporters, because I remember quite vividly how I was treated after that game.  Should the UT fans not have been excited that day?  Of course not.  They had just beaten the team that was a hiccup to scUM away from playing in the Rose Bowl and a potential national championship with the current Heisman trophy winner on it.  Had the situation been reversed, I'd have been pumped, too.  But there was ZERO excuse for what happened to me that day.  By the same token, should the kid in the GIF not be excited because of what happened yesterday?  Of course not.  His school just knocked off the biggest school in the state with the biggest budget, the highest profile, and the widest reputation.  I don't begrudge him excitement at all.  But you will never be able to convince me that he was justified in dashing to the railing and screaming like a petulant child in the face of the losing team as they exited the floor.  There is no excuse.

TossTrap's picture

blu.fan's picture

From my perspective, there have been a number of good arguments for and against the Dayton fan in the GIF. On the one hand, Dayton is a tier 2 school, and they just beat OSU, the flagship university in Ohio. Of course the fan is going to be exuberant, ecstatic, and happy. On the other hand, he was acting like a jerk, and rubbing it in the face of the losing team as they went to the locker room. Of course he was over the line. You can make an argument either way.

I have two observations.

  1. First is that you can't do anything about this, the fan's douchiness is done, and being Dayton's mortal enemy is a waste of your time. It will be a long time before the basketball team plays Dayton again. And if you play them in football, they're just an unsatisfying snackie cake in early September. Let it go . . . he had his 15 seconds of fame, and they'll probably lose on Saturday. Check:  there's absolutely no way they win against Syracuse.
  2. Second, remember this guy's behavior the next time OSU wins and you want to rub it in the face of the losing team's fans. Don't be that douche guy. Specifically, I know most of you hate Michigan. Fair enough. But whether you're in Ann Arbor or Columbus or your work place, and some other venue, don't be like the Dayton fan in the GIF. You should be better than that. I don't care whether you are a Buckeye fan or a Wolverine, you're at a big time, successful program, and being an obnoxious jerk is beneath you. Act like you've been there before. You have.

p.s.  I'll bet you a tub of wings that Michigan doesn't troll OSU at Crisler next year with a video of Craft missing the last shot (against either MIchigan in the Big 10 Tourney or against Dayton in the NCAA Tourney.) Just sayin'.

p.p.s. I'm annoyed by the different font sizes, but don't see how to edit on the tool bar. Mods?

One of my best friends is a big UD fan, and he did a few "douchie" things (i.e. kept insisting that Craft was traveling when he would drive to the rim) during the course of the game, but at the end of the game we shook hands and drank an Irish Carbomb. I really hated paying him the $20 I lost because of our whichever-team-makes-it farther bet, but being from the Dayton area, I'm actually a little proud of the Flyers. I hope they somehow beat 'Cuse, but I doubt it happens. UD does play power conference teams pretty tough most of the time.

I'm still pretty pissed about the loss because of the mental mistakes the Buckeyes made, but I don't think they were very long for March Madness this year win or lose.
