During his five years as an assistant at Ohio State, Jeff Boals' name has been connected to numerous head-coaching jobs. The latest is Bowling Green, which announced Tuesday it would not renew the contract of Louis Orr.

Thad Matta's coaching tree includes names like Brad Stevens, Sean Miller, John Groce,  Archie Miller, Brandon Miller, Alan Major and Todd Lickliter. Inevitably, Boals' name will be added to that list.

In an article published today, Sports Illustrated's Pete Thamel and Brian Hamilton list the top 20 assistants ready to become head coaches. Appearing prominently is Jeff Boals.

Jeff Boals, Ohio State. Has been involved in numerous jobs, including a finalist a few years back. With the success Thad Matta’s tree has had, Boals will be snatched up soon.

Boals, a 1995 graduate of Ohio University, was a finalist for the Fresno State job in 2011 and a candidate for the head-coaching position at his alma mater in 2012. He's been an assistant at Ohio State, OU, University of Charleston, Marshall, Robert Morris and Akron.

He was a two-year captain in college, leading the Bobcats to the 1994 MAC tournament and regular-season championships and the Preseason NIT title.
