During his five years as an assistant at Ohio State, Jeff Boals' name has been connected to numerous head-coaching jobs. The latest is Bowling Green, which announced Tuesday it would not renew the contract of Louis Orr.

Thad Matta's coaching tree includes names like Brad Stevens, Sean Miller, John Groce,  Archie Miller, Brandon Miller, Alan Major and Todd Lickliter. Inevitably, Boals' name will be added to that list.

In an article published today, Sports Illustrated's Pete Thamel and Brian Hamilton list the top 20 assistants ready to become head coaches. Appearing prominently is Jeff Boals.

Jeff Boals, Ohio State. Has been involved in numerous jobs, including a finalist a few years back. With the success Thad Matta’s tree has had, Boals will be snatched up soon.

Boals, a 1995 graduate of Ohio University, was a finalist for the Fresno State job in 2011 and a candidate for the head-coaching position at his alma mater in 2012. He's been an assistant at Ohio State, OU, University of Charleston, Marshall, Robert Morris and Akron.

He was a two-year captain in college, leading the Bobcats to the 1994 MAC tournament and regular-season championships and the Preseason NIT title.

Too bad he didn't land the job at his alma mater. But it may be better to have HC experience and success before returning home.

Every time I see Boals, I think back to Titus' book and the prank letter he wrote Boals. The opening line, "Listen here, you four-eyed f*ck". Pretty hilarious, but I also have a sophomoric sense of humor.

This would be a huge loss for the program, but he definitely deserves the opportunity.  And, I think he will do great there.  I worry if Paulus is ready to slide over and take lead assistant duties.  I would think Matta would bring somebody in from outside with more experience to jump in front of him in the pecking order.

If your top asst coaches aren't being mentioned as potential head coaches then you have a weak staff or are running a weak program. It is also pretty obvious that when MAtta loses a good coach he finds another that is equal or better as a replacement. It is also mighty obvious why you would want to coach with Matta if you wish to ascend in the profession.

Great point, Matta has been good with that.

Greg is the crown jewel of this coaching staff. Greg Paulus will be the next head coach of The Ohio State University Basketball Team. Make it so number one!
