Buckeye excellence is not exclusive to the football field or the basketball court. Around the Oval is our way of keeping you informed of the amazing things happening with the other 34 varsity sports on campus.

Women's golf against the world

Members of the Ohio State Women's Golf team competed at the U.S. Women's Amateur Sectional Qualifier in Dayton last weekend. Two Buckeyes, Jessica Porvasnik and Adeena Shears, qualified to move on to the U.S. Women's Amateur Championship. Porvasnik shot two under (70) to tie for first place. Shears found herself in an eight person playoff to fight for the final qualifying spot. She shot six straight pars to win the playoff, secure fifth place overall, and move on to the championship. The U.S. Women's Amateur Championship will be held August 1-7 at Rolling Green Golf Club in Springfield, Pennsylvania.

Another Ohio State golfer, Jaclyn Lee, claimed first place at the Alberta Ladies Amateur Championship in Canada. Lee led the way throughout the majority of the weekend and went into the final nine holes with an eleven stroke lead. She won the championship by a dominating nine strokes and finished two under. Lee won the Alberta Ladies Amateur Championship once before in 2014 when she was only seventeen years old. In over 80 years of the championship, Lee is the youngest golfer to ever take home the gold.

On top of all of this, five Buckeye golfers were named All-American Scholars by the Women's Golf Coaches Association. The recipients included Zoe-Beth Brake, Katja Pogacar, Jessica Porvasnik, Jaclyn Lee and Niki Schroeder. All-American Scholars are required to have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.5.

All of the Buckeyes that took home hardware last weekend will be returning to the team for the 2016-17 season. Playing in amateur championships is great experience and preparation for our team heading into the next season.

Women's basketball hires new assistant coach

Women's Basketball New Assistant Coach

Women's Basketball head coach Kevin McGuff announced on Tuesday the newest addition to his coaching staff, Carrie Banks. Banks will join McGuff and the rest of his team as an assistant coach for the 2016-17 season. McGuff believes that Banks will be a great asset to the staff because of her incredible work ethic and passion for developing young athletes. She is also known for her recruiting skills which McGuff says will help bring some new talent to the Buckeyes' roster.

Banks has coached in the great state of Ohio before at Dublin Jerome High School from 2004-2006. She also earned her master's degree in journalism from Kent State. Since then she has coached at Detroit Mercy and South Florida. She spent the last three years as an assistant coach at Northwestern where she helped lead the team to their first NCAA tournament appearance in 18 years.

MEN'S LACROSSE COMPETES IN U19 WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP
