Ohio State wrestler Kyle Snyder and Catherine Shields of the Buckeyes' rowing team were named 2015-16 Ohio State Male and Female Athletes of the Year, respectively, the school announced Monday.

Snyder and Shields will now be placed on the ballots for Big Ten Male and Female Athletes of the Year award.

Snyder — a sophomore from Woodbine, Maryland — was the Big Ten and NCAA champion at heavyweight in 2016 for the Buckeyes. He finished the season 11-0 overall after burning his redshirt midway through the season in hopes of winning a NCAA title after finishing runner-up as a true freshman. In the NCAA championship match, Snyder defeated two-time defending champion Nick Gwiazdowski of N.C. State in overtime.

Prior to his NCAA title, Snyder became the youngest world champion in United States history last fall by taking gold at the world championships. This summer, Snyder defeated 2012 Olympic gold medalist Jake Varner twice to earn a spot on the 2016 United States Olympic team that will compete in Rio.

A member of the Buckeyes' wrestling team has been named Ohio State's Male Athlete of the Year each of the last three seasons with Logan Stieber winning in 2014 and 2015.

Shields is the two-time Big Ten Rowing Athlete of the Year and was also the 2014 Ohio State Female Athlete of the Year. She is the sixth two-time winner in school history. Shields won four individual national titles and four Big Ten titles as a Buckeye throughout her career, according to a school release.
