Ohio Preps Represent

Streak OverThe streak is over (Enquirer Photo)

Not to be forgotten amidst all of the hoopla surrounding the biggest upset in college football history or the Buckeyes season-opening victory over Youngstown State, the 3rd Herbstreit Challenge took place in Cincinnati and Canton over the weekend. In all, seven of the top 25 teams in the nation took the field in the classic.

Ohio teams did extremely well, but the big news out of the event was unranked Elder snapping #3 Charlotte Independence's 109 game winning streak. Elder defensive back Keith Hamberg ended the 41-34 overtime classic with an interception, thus also snapping the 2nd-longest high school football winning streak of all-time.

#4 Cincinnati St. Xavier also looked good overpowering #5 DeMatha (MD) 28-7 in front of a live ESPN audience. The win was even more impressive when you consider that stud St. X running back Darius Ashley did not dress because of a sprained ankle.

In other action, #25 Youngstown Cardinal Mooney defeated #10 Monroeville Gateway (PA) 27-6, #11 Long Beach Poly defeated Cleveland Glenville 21-13 and #23 Cincinnati Colerain defeated the Two-A-Day Crew.

BlogPoll Ballot: Week 1

The first weekend of the 2007 college football season is finally in the books, and oh what a weekend it was. Of course everyone knows what happened to the Wolverines and much of the nation is grateful for the thorough spanking Georgia Tech gave to Notre Dame but what's really significant is that we finally have some film to back our BlogPoll ballot. There was a lot of movement between the final preseason rankings released last week and what we came up for this week and it starts with Michigan.

We're not sure where the Wolverines will skid to in the AP or Coaches poll, but they're completely off of our ballot. They'll get a chance to get back in, but they also have just as much of a chance to go 1-2 over their next 3 unless Lloyd rights the ship. In the meantime, H20-3 needs a nickname for Armanti Edwards and fast. That guy is sick. Speaking of Appalachian State, we did want to vote them in -- perhaps even in the top 15, but were unable to find them on our ballot.

There are quite a few quality teams that are just on the cusp of getting on the ballot. Georgia Tech embarrased Notre Dame, but then again who doesn't these days. THC summed up the game pretty well: "Charlie Weis made Chan Gailey look like Vince Lombardi". Michigan State looked very un-Michigan State-like lighting up the scoreboard with 45 first half points on the way to a 55-18 victory over UAB and TCU could be a sleeper upset at Texas this week.

As always, you can check the ballots of every voter and the final version is due Wednesday morning, so get your thoughts in by Tuesday night if you think we got it wrong.

DROPPED OUT: Michigan (#4)

Wilson's Tibia Is One Again

Lawrence WilsonSee you soon

Lawrence Wilson had successful surgery earlier Sunday on the fracture in his right shin bone that he suffered in the 2nd quarter of the Buckeyes opener against Youngstown State. The break was clean and only involved one bone making the prognosis so good that his father thinks he'll be back in time for the Wisconsin game on November 3rd. Eugene Wilson told the Plain Dealer that there was even a chance of a return in six weeks:

"If it's good, it's six, if it lingers, it's eight. We're hoping by Wisconsin."

That's great news for Buckeye fans. I'm sure his father has a good case of optimism going, but to think the Bucks could have Wilson's services back after even 8 weeks is incredible, especially considering.. well, he broke his leg. Chris touched on how he knew it was a serious injury because of the way Wilson was writhing on the ground in agony, but can you imagine how painful breaking your shin bone must be? I once had a baseball hit me in the shin and started seeing a fuzzy white light at the end of a tunnel. Godspeed Lawrence Wilson, godspeed.

The GBU Report: Buckeyes 38, Penguins 6

With Jason doing most of the heavy lifting (previews/recaps) on the football coverage, I plan to offer up a few thoughts and facts after each game as a supplement. Think of it as a Flinstones vitamin after dinner, only far less good for you.

The Good

  • OSU finished 8 of 12 on 3rd down conversions.
  • 8 true freshmen saw action and 3 scored their first career TD. (Saine, Sanzenbacher, Washington)
  • Even though Mo Wells had a decent day (68 rush/rec yards) it's clear to me Saine is our 2nd best running back. He looks quick to the hole and combines power with a deceptive elusiveness.
  • Boeckman not only had a fine day passing (17/23, 225yd, 2TD), he also showed leadership controlling the huddle, stayed poised in the pocket and made smart decisions. Even with Robo snagging 9 balls, I didnt feel Boeckman was locked in on just one receiver. There were other occasions where he ran through his progressions and hit the secondary or check down receiver. We'll see what happens when the competition picks up but I see no reason to believe Boeckman can't be an above average quarterback that, at the very least, won't lose a game trying to do too much. It also looks like Tressel was right, he throws an accurate deep ball.

The Bad

  • As noted, the rushing attack was shaky as the O-line really didn't create much of a push up front. This is definitely a concern but I'm not going to panic just yet for a couple reasons. First, Beanie basically admitted after the game that he wasn't hitting the line with much gumption. Second, YSU put 8 in the box creating a numbers mismatch. Third, even with all those Penguins in the box, Tressel refused to call a sweep or option to get the RB's outside. Instead, he challenged the offense to open a hole between the tackles and that just didn't happen. In a real game against a real opponent, he would continue to throw over the top into the wide open 3 deep secondary and/or call more screens or sweeps to get wide instead of purposely running into a wall of defenders. All that said, the Buckeyes still should've opened a few more holes considering the weight mismatch in the trenches.
  • What's up with 9 penalties? I don't think I've ever seen that many illegal substitution flags in a game. I also can't recall a captain (Pepper's boy) being flagged for that many false starts. That said, those penalties are easily correctable. I just hope the coaches join the team when they run gassers as punishment for the mental mistakes.
  • I went to the game for the first time in years and I must admit it only served as a reminder for why I only go once a decade. My bro and I scored great seats in A deck on the 40 yard line and we were surrounded with folks who really are not passionate about OSU football. I had a very nice lady next to me but when her first question was "What's the name of our quarterback?", I knew I was in trouble. That thought was confirmed as I listened to the group of 4 behind me call a family friend on speakerphone to make dinner plans for after the game. I know it was just YSU, but its no secret why the 'Shoe only truly rocks once or twice a year.

The Ugly

  • Lawrence Wilson's injury happened right in front of me and I knew right away he had a broken leg. Wilson's a tough dude and he was rolling around in agony for at least 5 minutes before the air cast was applied. This paves the way for young guys like Cameron Heyward and Robert Rose to step up, but losing Wilson is a big loss. You can bet The Gun Show will face even more double teams if someone doesn't step up and force teams to account for another stud coming off the edge.

Bucks Roll, But Lose Wilson

Brandon SaineSaine scored in his Buckeye debut (AP Photo)

In a game that's surely to be forgotten pretty quickly due to the absolute madness that went down in Ann Arbor, the Buckeyes were able to put away Youngstown State 38-6 in their 2007 home opener. Ohio State got a solid contribution from new quarterback Todd Boeckman, while three true freshman saw the endzone on the day. The news was not all good as defensive end Lawrence Wilson suffered a fractured leg in the 2nd quarter and was carted off the field.

There were some things that fans have to be absolutely thrilled about: a few of the freshman can ball, the team has a clear-cut #1 quarterback, the defense is fast and athletic and special teams performed well.

There are also other things that have to be of some concern to Tressel's squad: the power running game was anemic and the team made a lot of mistakes leading to a lot of yellow flags. Youngstown state even managed to win the turnover and tie in the sack battle. To add insult to injury, one of the Buckeyes that recorded a sack was injured for potentially the season.

Unlike the injury to Wilson, the mental mistakes and running game problems are things that can be worked on and The Vest pointed out how vital it was to finally have some game tape to watch and work from.

OFFENSE
Surprisingly, we didn't see as much Tressel Ball as some of us had predicted. Although the team passed more often than anticipated, the sets and plays were kept pretty vanilla. We were concerned that the Bucks would employ a two (or more) headed QB monster for the first few weeks of the 2007 season, but Boeckman came out and siezed the team today. On OSU's first series, he went 4-4 for 67 yards, capped with a 3-yard precision strike to freshman Dane Sanzenbacher that brought back memories of Troy Smith's strike to Robo at Iowa last season. Boeckman played every series but one in the first three quarters and finished 17/23 for 225 yards and 2 TDs. His second touchdown, to seldom used FB Trever Robinson, came after he had checked off of the three primary receivers on the play.

Boeckman did a lot of his damage via throws to Brian Robiskie. Robo ended up with a monster day -- 9 receptions for 153 yards with a long of 41 (including an impressive 6 for 113 in the 1st half alone). Robo has all of the tools and definitely has a rapport with Boeckman, but you'd like to maybe see the quarterback spread the ball around a little bit more. Although 9 players caught balls overall, Boeckman only threw to about five of them when he was in. As more and more defenses catch a Robo clue, Boeckman will be forced to work the ball to his #2-4 options.

Taurian WashingtonFreshman Taurian Washington showed his jets (AP Photo)

Backup quarterback Rob Schoenhoft came in for his first series in the 2nd quarter but was mostly inneffective outside of a nifty 17-yard scramble on a 3rd and 10. Unfortunately he followed up his scamper by chucking a ball at the feet of Devon Torrence on the following play. On the day, he finished 3-6 but is clearly a backup at this point in time. What remains to be seen is whether he'll stick at #2 on the depth chart or fall to #3 after the electric performance freshman Antonio Henton turned in during his 4th quarter drive. Henton lead the team on an 85-yard scoring drive that culminated with a 37-yard touchdown strike to fellow frosh Taurian Washington. Total time of the drive? 1:05. Henton looked a lot better than he did at the Spring Game where he looked a little confused in the pocked. Washington showed the burners that have teammates so excited for him to see more playing time.

Sanzenbacher saw quite a bit of action and did have 3-yard TD reception, but also had a couple of drops. Granted, one was a laser from Henton, but if the ball hits your hands...

While the passing game looked great, the Buckeyes will definitely be putting some work in to improve the running game. Beanie Wells finished with a relatively meager 46 yards on 16 carries. Things were so bad for Beanie that at one point after he'd scored his lone touchdown, he had 6 carries for 2 yards. In fact, backup Mo Wells (8/45, 3 receptions) and freshman Brandon Saine (10/42 1 TD) both looked like better options throughout most of the afternoon. Saine, in particular, excited the crowd with his running. He had a nifty 16-yard touchdown run that was called back due to a holding penalty and generally displayed quickness hitting the hole. We expect the low production to be the exception, rather than the rule for Wells on the season, but it's good to know capable backups exist.

Wells can be forgiven for some of his numbers because the offensive line didn't have it going on power running plays. The line did a relatively good job (save for a blindside hit to Boeckman) pass protecting, but the power run blocking, particularly on the goal line, was pretty lousy. Even though 3 of the first 4 series yielded nice drives capped with touchdowns, the goal line running in each of those series was terrible. Aside from the two sacks given up, the line did a decent job with pass protection on the afternoon, so there's that, but the power running game looked nothing like a line returning 3 very capable starters. Jim Bollman, your hogs need some work.

DEFENSE
It's hard to get a real read on the defense against a team like these Penguins. On one hand, they played well and displayed a lot of speed and athleticism on the day. They shut down the YSU rushing and passing games, holding each to under 100 yards. However, it is Youngstown State, the defensive line only got to the quarterback twice and the unit didn't force any turnovers on the day.

Lawrence WilsonNot what you want to see when playing a "cupcake" (AP Photo)

The big story on the defensive side of the ball, however, was the injury to Wilson. The junior, making his first career start was eating the Penguin line up to the tune of 2 TFLs and 1 sack before he went down in the 2nd quarter. The early optimistic estimate for how long he'll be out is 6-8 weeks, but more details will spill it in the next couple of days. Sophomore Robert Rose and freshman Cameron Heyward will most definitely need to step up now. Both are capable players and the Heacock's revolving door approach to playing time on the line will help.

Gholston didn't maim anyone, but he turned in a solid day, while James Laurinaitis, Austin Spitler and Anderson Russell shared the team lead with 7 total tackles. It was great to see Russell back on the field again, but he did let an interception get away from him in the 3rd quarter. Cut him a little slack, the ball hit him in the hands.

Freshman linebacker Thaddeus Gibson opened a lot of eyes with his performance, mostly on special teams. He had a partial punt block and was in on at least 3 huge stops on the kickoff team. Another freshman, defensive back Eugene Clifford also looked like he'll be earning more time as the season goes on.

SPECIAL TEAMS
The kicking game had to have pleased Tressel. Kicker Ryan Pretorius was good on his only field goal attempt of the day from 24 yards, while also banging in all 5 of his PATs. Pretorius did a decent job with the new kickoff rule as well, managing to put each of his kickoffs within the YSU 10 yard line and even booming a touchback in the 3rd quarter. Punter A.J. Trapasso was only called on to punt twice, but he showed up, hitting one for 44 yards and another for 48 yards.

NOTES
The Buckeyes have now won 19 consecutive regular season games and 29 straight home openers... Tressel is now 48-3 at OSU when leading at halftime... Robiskie has 16 catches for 242 yards in his last two games at the Shoe... Youngstown State had their 11 game winning streak snapped in openers... Basketball coach Thad Matta and Mike Conley Jr. were recognized at the game... Former Buckeye quarterback Justin Zwick was the sideline reporter for ONN... The new field looks funky at first in HD, but it's growing on me... Is there any doubt that although John Cooper would have won a game like this 72-0, he would have shown every play in his playbook in the process... Did anyone throw toilet paper?

Buster Douglas Has Just Left Ann Arbor

We've got a recap of the Buckeye game coming, but as they say, stop the (Word)Presses: I-AA Appalachian State has just knocked off Michigan in the Big House. They're already talking greatest upset in college football history on the WWL right now (because recent = great, right?). But, it is the FIRST FREAKIN' TIME IN HISTORY A RANKED TEAM HAS BEEN DEFEATED BY A LOWER DIVISION TEAM.

The whole thing has us slightly conflicted, though. On one hand, I'm hard pressed to think of anything cooler happening to the Wolverines. A loaded team getting beat by a non D-I team in their home opener. Amazing. On the other hand, Southern Football Man (apologies to Mr. Young) will be doing a lot of chest thumping over the next few weeks and that's slowly but surely creeping up the list of things that annoy me in life. It's still ranked behind all-things Michigan, but it just passed getting attacked by cobras if that tells you anything.

We were lucky enough to score some screen shots of the Mlive forums taken at various stages of the collapse:

21-14ASU goes up 21-14. First sign of trouble: fan notices announcers are being mean to his team.
28-14ASU is now up 28-14 and the "Fire Carr" chorus is firing up.
final.gifFinal. Recriminations.

Wow. Seriously. Wow. I just hope that Brian doesn't crawl into a hole and disappear for 4 months. Who will run the BlogPoll?

There's probably a downside for Buckeye fans as well though: this will probably be Lloyd's final season at the helm. So get your LLLLLOYD shirts now. They'll be collector's items!

UPDATE: Video goodness.

Preview: #11 OSU vs. Youngstown State

Tressel at YSUYSU: Not Vest Worthy
Ohio State Buckeyes #11 Ohio State 0-0, 0-0 Big Ten Roster | Schedule 12:00 PM ET ------ Ohio Stadium Columbus, OH Youngstown State Youngstown State 0-0, 0-0 Gateway Roster | Schedule

Opponent: First, let's get this out of there right away: there's no chance whatsoever that the Penguins will come into Columbus and shock Ohio State. It just won't happen. It's darn near impossible for a MAC school to leave the Shoe with a win, let alone an I-AA FCS squad. Stan Jackson has a better chance of not owning a Norelco T980, than Youngstown State has a chance to win in this one.

Saying that, and if you'll allow me to morph into Holth mode, this is a darn good FCS-level team. In Tom Zetts, the Penquins have a proven senior quarterback that has thrown for 300+ in the division playoffs and already ranks 2nd in school history for touchdown passes. Automatic turf-cred for wearing #24, Zetts is an Academic All-American and lands bonus points for the Boardman thing. In 2006, Youngstown State went 11-3 including a tough 37-3 loss in Happy Valley early in the season. In that game, the Penguins were able to hold the Penn State offense scoreless for the first 20 minutes (a 49 yard field goal finally got them on the board) before size, strength, genetics and other factors took over. After losing to eventual champion Appalachian State in the national semifinals, Youngstown State looks poised to make another run in their division. They'll enter the season a top 10 team and the program appears to be in good hands with coach Jon Heacock, younger brother of OSU defensive coordinator Jim Heacock and the guy that took over the show when Tressel got the big call-up.

Has driven Bernie's CamaroHas driven Bernie's Camaro

Which brings us to the whole Tress as the Godfather of YSU athletics thing. Head football coach for 15 years and athletic director for his final 6, the pre-vest Tressel brought a winning tradition to a region of the country that, after the bad luck the steel industry saw in the early 80s, desperately needed something to look forward to. Within two seasons, the Penguins were playoff bound under Tressel's guidance. He would eventually go on to win 4 national titles, making the playoffs during 10 of his seasons. If Ohio State is his son, YSU is his favorite cousin.

You can look for the Penguins to come out like a scrappy MAC squad - a chip on the shoulder and excited to be playing against some kids they may have played with or against in high school. YSU may hold the Buckeyes scoreless for a while or - gasp - get a quick field goal, but the final score will describe a game that was never really in doubt. Much like when the Penguins played PSU last season, superior talent will prevail over the course of the game - especially late when the size factor starts taking its toll. Regardless, because of Tressels strong affinity to Youngstown State, the Bucks will not be piling on points for the sake of the polls.

Notes: There's an interesting sort of symmetry in that Michigan will be playing two-time defending I-AA champions Appalachian State this weekend... 4 of the top 5 games in YSU history (as voted by fans) are Tressel victories... In 1994 Tressel's Penguins defeated Boise State 28-14 to win their 3rd national title in 4 years... YSU coach Jon Heacock was Tressel's defensive coordinator for 6 seasons.

Buckeye Breakdown: Have you heard the one about this season feeling a lot like 2002? That comparison is getting old, but there's definitely a sense of deja vu and Tressel Ball will be the rage, at least in the early going. Fans, myself included, are not very stoked about the out-of-conference schedule this season, but this weekend's feast on Youngstown State is just what the doctor ordered for a team with so many question marks on offense. Defensive units always come together faster because it's more of an instinct thing on that side of the ball. Throw in the fact that Ohio State has an All-American candidate at each of the three levels in the defense and the Buckeye faithful is rightfully feeling good about the 2007 Silver Bullets. Offenses, however, need game-speed repitition to hone their timing and the Penguins will provide that.

It’s TimeIt's time

A ton of Buckeyes will see the field as Tressel will try his best to keep the score respectable. We already know that at least two of the quarterbacks will be seeing snaps, but as we previously discussed, it's crucial that Boeckman comes out and has some early success and develops a chemistry with the new receiving corps. The storyline for this team from week to week cannot be about who is going to start at quarterback. The last time a Tressel-coached Ohio State team had this problem, they were squeeking by Marshall, losing to Northwestern and getting waxed by the Hawkeyes. Not fun.

The Buckeye coaching staff will be looking to get a solid win in which a lot of the youngsters see action and most importantly, the team escapes without injuries. That could mean a relatively quick hook for the player most fans are anxious to see perform, Beanie Wells. This is especially true if the team jumps out to a big early lead, but don't fret. He could still get his 100 in the first quarter. How much of a look will Brandon Saine get? Folks are fond of throwing out "Ginn speed", but I'm not suer I've ever seen anyone as fast as Ginn on the field. If he's almost-as-fast, that's just as good.

The Buckeye defense should have its way with the Youngstown State offense. Expect Gholston to be in the Penguin backfield early and often, but he too will see about a half-game worth of action as the coaches get looks from unproven youngsters like Cameron Heyward. Call it blasphemy, but include me in the group that thinks Laurinaitis was the beneficiary of a decent season combined with the hype of the program and the famous dad factor. Don't get me wrong, he had a great season in 2006. I'm just not so sure it was Nagurski-worthy. No fear, though, because he should set the tone for an excellent season this weekend. The game slows down a little each year and the swagger he's accumulated will help (unless the swagger is fueled by In-N-Out burgers).

Honestly, it's hard to get hyped for a game like this. You do have the benefit of watching a relatively stress-free game -- maybe tying one on without the fear of a nail-biter because the only thing fans should be worried about are where they're going to watch the game and who's going to drive them home. Other than that, get the "W", escape injury-free and get ready for Akron.

Against The Spread - Week 1

Irizarry Irizarry's other 'uniform'

I'm sure none of our morally sound readers ever gamble, but Jason and I thought it would be fun to take a peek at the week's biggest games and offer our picks against the spread. We'll track our results as the season goes on to see which of us would've been homeless first if this weren't just a simulation.

To spice it up a little, we'll bring in a famous guest picker each week to see how they stack up. Since Louis Irizarry's in town, we've got him the fold as our first guest. Feel free to offer your picks in the comments if you think you've got a lock that the 11W community must be aware of.

Now on to the picks:

Thursday: LSU (-17 1/2) @ Mississippi State (ESPN 8:00) The Tigers head to Starkville looking to continue their domination of MSU. In the last 6 contests, LSU is 6-0 outscoring the Bulldogs 250-43 including 48-17 last year and a 51-0 whuppin' in 2004. Which reminds me...How in the world does Sylvester Croom keep his job? Wait. Don't answer that.

Chris: I'll take LSU to cover, 31-13. Jason: I think the Tigers will sputter a little, but still cover 27-6. Irizarry: Anybody seen my glock?, er, I mean I'll take LSU and give the points.

Friday: Washington (-3) @ Syracuse (ESPN 8:00) This contest features two young quarterbacks who have been given the keys to some janky offenses. Jake Locker is the Husky phenom that many, including ASU coach Dennis Erickson, are saying will turn around the stagnant program while sophomore Andrew Robinson is being counted on to revive a Syracuse program that's been on life support longer than Terri Schaivo. Honestly, we really only put this game on the list since we'll likely tune in to get a little advanced scouting on the Huskies.

Chris: Huskies 27, 'Cuse 21. No way I'm betting on Syracuse unless Boeheim's got the 2-3 zone working. Jason: The Huskies will be looking two weeks ahead and the Dome will be rocking. I like Syracuse to win outright 31-28. Irizarry: I stole a phat Syracuse hoodie and Starter jacket from Meijer back in middle school so I'm taking the 'Cuse, baby!

Saturday: Georgia Tech (+3) @ Notre Dame (NBC 3:30) Just typing about the Irish gives me dookie cramps. We all know why, but it's tiresome seeing such a mediocre program grab so many headlines. I guess I'll pay attention just so I can truly enjoy watching this team end up with a losing record. Good luck to Weis as he attempts to install new players at every offensive skill position and most of his offensive line. That said, the Irish still might have enough to beat the always overrated Jackets.

Chris: Tech 24, Irish 2 Jason: This is Tashard Choice's coming out party for the '07 Heisman race. The Irish pull it out, but it will be close: 21-20. Irizarry: I'll take Notre Dame because I like how Charlie Weis looks like he's had the munchies since '65. That reminds me, anybody wanna buy some weed?
