PREVIEW: #7 OSU vs Northwestern

O'Brien Awarded 2.4 Million For Cheating

obrien1.jpg "It was only 7 violations, your honor."

Despite giving recruit Aleksandar Radojevic $6000 in cash and failing to report it to Ohio State officials, an appeals court today awarded Jim O'Brien 2.4 million in damages. The court's logic is that OSU breached O'Brien's contract by firing him for an offense that didn't warrant termination. I know OB was trying to help the kid's family, but he knew the rules and hid the fact he broke them. If not for the allegations getting ready to be made public involving Boban Savovic, this violation would likely have never come to light. A minor win for the university is that the court did not award the additional 1.3 mil O'Brien was seeking for getting the boot before the NCAA officially deemed him a cheater.

So there it is. Crime does pay. O'Brien should have plenty of cheddar to hold him over while he waits for the ban on his coaching collegiate athletics to expire in 2009. Look on the bright side, O'Brien's firing paved the way to bring in a coach with a vision of being an elite program. OB caught lightning in a bottle with Redd, Scoonie and company and was a great X's and O's guy, but his reluctance to even attempt to chase big time recruits put limits on what the program could become. You think OB would've even attempted to pursue Oden, Conley or Cook?

Preview: #7 OSU vs. Northwestern

Ohio State Buckeyes #7 Ohio State 3-0, 0-0 Big Ten Roster | Schedule 3:30 PM ET ------ Ohio Stadium Columbus, OH Northwestern Northwestern 2-1, 0-0 Big Ten Roster | Schedule

After looking great in a convincing win in Seattle last weekend, Buckeye fans are sporting some swagger that even Johnny Drama would find envious. What looked like a trendy upset pick quickly turned into Ohio State establishing itself as front-runners in the Big Ten conference and a possible player for all of the marbles.

What better way to keep the momentum going than a visit from Northwestern in Ohio Stadium's 500th Buckeye game. This is not the normally hapless Wildcats of years past, mind you, but an even more miserable version that's fresh off of letting Duke end a national-best 22 game losing streak on their turf. Granted, the Wildcats were missing a huge weapon in Sutton, but losing to Duke? At home?

It's worth noting that as great as Tressel is, he holds the distinction of being the only Buckeye coach in the past 36 years to lose to the Wildcats. Not Earl. Not even the JHC - although he did have a 17-15 scare in 1994. Still, you can imagine the Vest has drilled the importance of conference play to the team and will have the Buckeyes prepared. After all, they can't possibly be caught looking ahead to the Gophers next week.

Opponent: Buckeye fans are very familiar with Tyrell Sutton (#19). The Akron Hoban product left high school after setting the state record for career rushing yards with a staggering 9,426. Sutton holds several other state records including most rushing touchdowns in a single game with 8 (twice). Ultimately, questions about his size (5-9/190) lead him to Evanston.

Tyrell SuttonOne that got away

An ankle injury suffered in the Wildcats' win over Nevada caused Sutton to have to sit out the Duke game, but luckily for Northwestern fans, all 38 of them, it appears as if he'll play against the Buckeyes. Sutton, the former Big Ten Freshman of the Year after breaking onto the scene with over 1,500 rushing yards and 16 touchdowns in 2005 is not only an excellent runner, but is also a very capable receiver out of the backfield. He definitely has the attention of the Ohio State defense.

Quarterback C.J. Bachér (#18), has been good at times over the last two seasons, but he's no Brett Basanez. He is, however, a huge Boyz II Men fan. Whether that has any impact on his performance in the Shoe is yet to be seen. What we do know is that he got on the board early against Ohio State last season by completing a 46 yard score in the first quarter -- right to the Buckeyes' Brandon Mitchell. Bachér threw another pick before being replaced in the 3rd quarter of the blowout loss.

Last week against the Blue Devils, Bachér completed 30 of 50 for 368 yards, much of that in the 2nd half as the Wildcats attempted to come back from a 20-7 halftime defecit. The yardage is gaudy, but he threw two costly interceptions without any touchdowns on the day. The beneficiary of his big day was 6-3 junior wide receiver Ross Lane (#9) as he hauled in 9 catches for 128 yards. All this coming after Lane only put up 2 catches for 19 yards a week earlier in the comeback victory over Nevada. The return of Sutton should limit Lane's looks, but the big game last week will keep balls coming his way.

On the defensive side of the ball, the Cats are lead by 6-3/240 linebacker Adam Kadela, the team's top tackler and former Dublin Coffman standout. So we know that there will be at least a few folks in Ohio rooting for a Northwestern upset. We also know that the Wildcat defense didn't record a sack against a relatively weak Duke offensive line and allowed Duke quarterback Thaddeus Lewis to look more like JaMarcus Russell than, well, a Dukie quarterback. That secondary should be ripe for the picking this weekend.

Pat Fitzgerald has done a decent job since taking over the head coach position under tragic circumstances prior to last season. There were questions about some of his coaching moves last weekend and the 13 penalties for 125 yards the Cats logged last weekend is pretty damn amazing when you think about it, but by all accounts, he's a guy that most fans of college football are pulling for to do well. He'll be overmatched this weekend, but his future could be bright. All things considered.

Notes: In Northwestern's last 14 games decided by 7 points or less, the Wildcats are 11-3... Ohio State has scored 102 points against Northwestern in their last two meetings... 2007 marks the first time in school history that all of Northwestern's football games will be televised... Duke's last victory over a major college team was in 2004 against Clemson - Master of karma Tommy Bowden's Clemson.

Buckeye Breakdown: The Buckeyes will look to come out and continue the solid play they displayed in the 2nd half in Seattle last weekend. This is a game that could get frustrating to watch at times because Tressel will want to work the fundamentals, even if they aren't working so well at first, but the return of the students should add an extra charge to the atmosphere in the stadium.

Both the passing and rushing game will have distinct advantages going against the Northwestern defense, but look for Beanie Wells to add to the 278 rushing yards he's put up the last two weeks. There are rumblings about a back injury, but Tressel indicated the tweak was nothing more than the dings a major college running back will take from time to time. Although I've grown to look forward to the awesome stiff-arm or two that Beanie unleashes each game, it's nearing the point where I'm equally excited when Saine is in. Is this the week that Saine passes Mo Wells on the depth chart?

Brandon SaineThe new #2 back?

Boeckman should have a chance to continue to grow and work on not forcing balls into coverage, but if the game gets out of hand early - which it may - will Henton hit the field first as his replacement? Schoenhoft's rather disastrous showing at Washington would seem to indicate that he may be the 3rd option on Saturday, although he's still listed as Boeckman's backup on the depth chart.

Against Washington, the Buckeye offensive line looked nothing like the unit we saw the first two games of the season. Sometimes all it takes is a good performance and a little confidence to get rolling and the unit should have the following goals this weekend: 125+ for Beanie and 0 quarterback sacks. That shouldn't be a problem because the Wildcat defensive front failed to even get to Duke's quarterback last weekend.

James Laurinaitis and the rest of the defense will appreciate the fact that they won't have to face the multi-dimensional beast that is Jake Locker this week. Sutton will prevent some challenges, but an early lead of any size will effectively take him out of the Cats' attack - at least from the rushing perspective. I think you'll see better tackling out of the unit this weekend and for the remainder of the season. Locker is that dynamic. Even though he needs to work on the passing game, it's doubtful that the Buckeyes will face anything like him in the near future. Unless the Bucks get another crack at Tebow in their bowl game.

Baby Ironhead continues to blossom in front of our own eyes. His hit on Locker last weekend almost earned him the team's "Jack Tatum Hit of the Week" award, but it went to Trevor Robinson instead for a play on kick coverage. Tressel had this to say:

"We needed to call for like three or four extra votes and it ended up being an executive decision by Darrell Hazell, and he picked Trev Robinson. And Cameron won't speak to him at this point, but Trev did a good job and made the big hit there."

The Northwestern game presents a unique opportunity each season. Because the result is not usually in doubt, fans have an opportunity to take care of things that require a Saturday, but would be impossible every other week leading up to Thanksgiving. Like getting married. Save the wedding for another weekend if you can. You don't want to miss a scary-young team continue its march to greatness.

Notes: Punter A.J. Trapasso has been added to the Ray Guy watch list... Larry Grant, who blocked a field goal attempt at Washington last weekend also blocked a punt last season against Northwestern... Todd Boeckman ranks 20th nationally in pass efficiency with a rating of 153.54... Ohio State is outrushing its opponents by an average of 4.7 to 2.6 yards per carry... Jack Arute will be doing the sideline work again this weekend and will no doubt point out the fact that the last time the Wildcats won in Columbus, Nixon was still considered an honest President.

Jason: OSU 45, Northwestern 3
Chris: OSU 38, Nortwestern 6

UPDATE: Saine is out of the Northwestern game due to an injury he suffered last weekend at Washington. Nevermind that he scored a touchdown on the final play of the game, but evidently he won't be able to go this weekend. Ken Gordon thinks the specific injury news is is too much for the public to handle. Thanks Ken.

Against The Spread - Week 4

Mussy Like Drinky "Natty Light rules, pardner!"

Continuing our improbable runs both Jason and I went 4-0 against the spread in last week's games. That must be what happens when you don't actually have money riding on the outcome. Go figure. Anyway, Jason stands at 10-1 so far this year while I'm 9-2. This week's games will likely add a reality check to this here contest.

Since Northwestern's in town for their annual beatdown ('04 never happened), we've invited everybody's least favorite Wildcat, Brent Musburger to the 11W studios to offer up his picks. This move keeps our streak alive of inviting guests with their own drinking game although Muss is the first to apparently play his own game while cruising the streets of Lincoln. Undoubtedly, he's our first guest with his own action figure.

Now on to the picks:

S. Carolina (+16.5) @ LSU (CBS 3:30) The Old Ball Coach takes his Cocks to Baton Rouge seeking a huge upset. One things for sure, LSU will be without the services of freshman dumbass Derrick Odom who managed to get arrested for the second time in a month, this time for applying Rikishi's "Stinkface" maneuver on some dude's ride. Classic.

Chris: With a defense like that, I'll lay the points. LSU 31-10. Jason: I'm not convinced South Carolina is a great team, but their coach is crafty. LSU 31-24. Mussy: SEC Cocktail parties rule! I'm taking the OBC to cover. LSU 30-14

Penn State (-3) @ Michigan (ABC 3:30) The Michigan defense thinks they've got things figured out. I doubt that's the case but is PSU really as good as advertised? MgoBlog and Run Up The Score discuss.

Chris: I know I'll regret this but UM owns them lately. Michigan 20, PSU 17 Jason: I think Penn State breaks through finally. The first setback for the Wolverines will bring groans in the Big House. PSU 28-17. Mussy: Joe Pa and I used to chase skirts back during the depression so I'll take PSU 24-17.

Georgia (+3.5) @ Alabama (CBS 7:45) Bama online's got your short attention span breakdown. I'm curious to see if Slick Nick can back up last week's win over HousText Nutt's Razorbacks.

Chris: I really don't think either team is very good but I hate Georgia less so I'll take the points. Bama 24-21. Jason: Bear Saban can do no wrong in the eyes of the Bama faithful. And it's at night. Alabama 27, Georgia 20. Mussy: I only pay attention to this game when it's "between the hedges". Ooh la la. UGA 20-19.

Iowa (+7.5) @ Wisconsin (ABC 8:00) Assuming Iowa has enough players out of custody, they'll head to Madison for the prime time ABC game. Black Heart Gold Pants has had enough and wants to see his boys step up. Of course, all that's child's play compared to the antics of Master Chef Chad Alvarez, son of Wisky AD Barry Alvarez.

Chris: Wisky is 12-6-1 ATS when favored by 4 to 7.5 while Iowa is 7-10-1 ATS on the road in September. Wisky 28-20. Jason: Badgers big 20-3. Guest: Ferentz is no Hayden Fry. Badgers 23-14.

Blog Roundtable 3.2: Fable Session

Erin AndrewsNothing to do with this post, but who cares!

Peter at Burnt Orange Nation was tasked with providing this week's BlogPoll roundtable questions provide he did. Here's our take:

1. Handicap your team's chances to win your conference championship. If your team is not the favorite, who is?

Ohio State has emerged as the favorite, thanks to the defense, with Penn State and Wisconsin closely in tow. The conference has taken a hit nationally after the Michigan debacle and numerous stinky performances in early games. Penn State plays Michigan and Wisconsin in the first four weeks, while the Bucks get the teams in the last four weeks of the season. Each one of the three could easily have a loss before meeting Ohio State. Given Tress's ability to win big games, I give his boys about a 70% chance of winning the Big Ten.

2. Outline the (realistic) best case and worst-case scenarios for your team.

Best case: Ohio State’s offense continues to gel and utilizes all of their weapons, while the defense doesn’t slow down over the next 5 weeks. 8-0 is very conceivable going into the tricky 8pm start at Penn State. Get past the 107,000+ white-out of Beaver Stadium, take care of Wisky and Illinois at home and it should come down to the game in Ann Arbor.

Worst case: The surprise season starts to fall apart in a late drunken start at Purdue, October 6th. Every few seasons the Boilermaker offense gives the Buckeyes fits and an experienced group could start a derailment. Ohio St. continues with losses at Penn State and Michigan. The season ends with an Outback Bowl appearance and another month of SEC speed talk.

3. We're only three games in to the season, but teams and storylines are starting to take shape. Compare your team to a character or theme from a fable or children's tale.

The Buckeyes thus far have resembled Beauty and the Beast. The Beauty has been a prudish defense, ranking 1st in the Big Ten in total defense and allowing only 22 points on the season. The Beast has been an offense that has sputtered at times and a quarterback with an early tendency to throw balls into the waiting hands of enemy defenders. There are signs that the Beast is getting a makeover, though.

4. Imagine you're the coach of your team. Give three specific changes you'd implement immediately which you think would have the biggest impact on improving the team.

  1. Promote Brandon Saine to the #2 running back spot. You've got to appreciate the way that Mo Wells has gone about his business without bitching, but Saine is clearly the 2nd best running back on the team and needs 15 touches a game.
  2. Leave Malcolm Jenkins in as corner. He did snatch one against Washington coming from the safety spot, but as the team's top cover corner, can Tress afford to not having him on the opponent's best receiver one-on-one each week?
  3. Practice should be nothing but tackling and pursuit angles for a week. One complaint towards the defense from the Washington game is the number of missed tackles and bad angles. I know we're splitting hairs here and Locker's skill caused many of the missed tackles, but if the team doesn't address this, H20-3 could get loose late in the year.

5. USC, LSU/Florida, and Oklahoma have established themselves as the frontrunners in the early going. Which other team or teams are you eyeballing as potential BCS party crashers?

It's still so early, but the winner of the Big Ten or the Big East could be potential party crashers. Every year around mid-season, there are about 5 or 6 teams that look like they could finish unbeaten, but the reality is that one or two (sometimes three, LSU fans) end the season unbeaten. West Virginia may have the best chance to get into the mix assuming they can get by Rutgers, who also look pretty tough. I left out Louisville when mentioning WVU stumbling blocks because the Mountaineers could realistically hang 75 points on that defense.

This Is Reloading?

Silky SmoothRobo: Silky Smooth

Heading into the 2007 season, there were many questions about how the young Buckeye offense would respond after losing Troy Smith and two receivers taken in the 1st round of the NFL draft. While Todd Boeckman isn't putting up Troy numbers (yet), Brian Robiskie and Brian Hartline have more than eased any doubts about the receiving corps.

Robiskie has quietly (at least in terms of national exposure) already put up 17 catches for 342 yards and 2 touchdowns -- a healthy average of 20.1 yards per catch. His average of 114.0 yards per game, good for 11th in the nation, extrapolated out over the 12 game season is 1,368 yards, good enough for 3rd all-time in Buckeye history. Only David Boston's 1,435 yards in 1998 and Terry Glenn's 1,411 yards in 1995 rank higher. (A bowl appearance would put him at the top with 1,482.)

In fact, should Robo break 1,000 he'll be the first Buckeye receiver to do so since Jenkins cracked the mark in 2002. It may be unrealistic to think that Robo will continue to put up these numbers going forward. After all, he'll be going against Big Ten secondaries from here on out. Then again, we've already seen some of these Big Ten secondaries and they may be just as bad as what the Bucks have faced. And while folks want to talk about Saine and Small's speed, Robiskie showed a little of his afterburners on the bomb against the Huskies.

Robo is blowing up, but he's not the only bright spot. Brian Hartline is quickly making a name for himself as the new Gonzo. At his current pace, he's projected to go for 600+ on the season. To put that into perspective, Gonzo ended last season with 734 receiving yards. The emergence of Hartline as a possession guy and someone that Boeckman looks to other than Robo is a big key to setting up everything else in the offense.

It's definitely early, but these guys are putting up numbers in a handcuffed offense. Last season the team was in 4 wide receiver sets for about 25% of their plays and have yet to even feature that formation this season. The Vest has been digging the 2 tight end set with Jake Ballard in as the 2nd tight end, but he conceded he'd like to open it up a little more at his presser yesterday:

"You do what your personnel dictates. I like having Ballard in the game some, so I like the two tight ends, although I love being in three wides."

Even Boeckman has had his moments. Through his first three career starts, he has two games of 200 yards or more of passing. That's the same number of 200 yard games Craig Krenzel had all season in 2002. Imagine what these guys will do next season (IF Robo comes back).

Small update on the BlogPoll: our week 3 ballot remains unchanged since we published the initial draft on Monday. Either you all really like our selections, or the picture of Archie's fro has you hypnotized. We're not sure.

At any rate, one of the cooler aspects of the BlogPoll is the data visualizations Brian built into it. The view of voter distribution for OSU this week is kind of cool, not only because the little squares project a giant middle finger back to the football collective, but because you can quickly see who is insane by clicking one of the squares in the middle teen range.

Elsewhere in the Big Ten universe, Mike Hart is keeping his mouth shut ahead of the Wolverine's matchup with Penn State.

NDSPN: The Worldwide Leader in Undeserved Hype

NDSPN

The Wiz caught this earlier when it was known as JCSPN, but just hours later, it's cousin NDSPN was dropped.

With a profile on Jimmy Clausen's first NFL game four years out to Demetrius Jones saying he transfered to NIU because "I want to play for a winning team", we finally have a media outlet that's willing to give the Irish a little bit of exposure.

While we're talking Notre Dame, be sure to check out Brian taking the Genius Crewcut to the woodshed.

Buckeye NFLer Of The Week - 2

Joey Galloway

This week's Buckeye NFLer award goes out to the ageless Joey Galloway of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Galloway had 4 catches for 135 yards and 2 touchdowns at home against New Orleans. Joey torched the Saints' secondary for a 69 yard TD and a 24 yard TD, both in the 2nd quarter of the Bucs' 31-14 spanking of the Saints. Although Galloway will turn 36 this November, he can still dust most NFL DBs. His legendary 4.28 second 40-yard dashes at Ohio State might be a thing of the past, but Joey's wheels are still a thing of beauty.

Nate Clements of the San Francisco 49ers came in a close second. Nasty Nate had a team high 6 solo tackles, a QB sack & a forced fumble as the Niners went on the road to beat the Rams 17-16.

This week was a near toss-up, but Galloway gets the because of his four years of service in the 'Bus.

And The Winner Of The Guess The Score Contest Is..

hat-rack-vertical.jpg Looks like TLB's cleared a spot for his new lid

The first contest in the storied history of 11W was a success as we received over 40 predictions from across the globe. Nobody predicted the exact score, but two readers got within 3 collective points. TLB forecasted a 34-12 romp while GoBucks89 envisioned a 31-13 outcome. I know I don't need to tell you, but just in case you were grounded, OSU defeated the Huskies 33-14.

We weren't smart enough to publish the tiebreaker rules but we had decided to go with the approach used in the hoops brackets, aka total points. TLB's score totaled 46 points while GoBucks89's score totaled 44 points against a game score totaling 47 points so TLB wins the Grand Prize in the closest contest in 11W history.

Be on the lookout down the line for another chance to show off your prognostication skills. We're looking to overtake Oprah in philanthropical donations by season's end. Feel our reader love.

BlogPoll Ballot: Week 3

The top five in our ballot went unchanged after a wild weekend of football. You could even pretty much make the argument that these five have separated themselves from the rest of the pack, but there's still a lot of ball to be played.

Texas took a tumble due to their narrow escape from Central Florida while Wisconsin gets dinged for their Citadel performance. They get a stunned Iowa team this week, so they should continue to pile up victories, but this team remains hard to read.

Newcomers include Boston College (#15), Clemson (#18), Kentucky (#24) and Cincinnati (#25).

As always, you can check the ballots of every voter and the final version is due Wednesday morning, so get your thoughts in by Tuesday night if you think we got it wrong.
