Buckeye Seedlings

Eteinne SabinoI hear Ohio ladies are easier.

Since the last installment of Buckeye Seedlings, Tressel and his coaching staff have landed another top rated player, bringing the total to 14 for next year's reload. Etienne Sabino is a 6'3" 223 lb inside linebacker from Miami Fl., who is rated by most as the top at his position. He will join his high school teammate, Travis Howard in snubbing all three Florida schools and playing for the Buckeyes. Ohio State could have a class upwards of 18, with the last commitments coming on and around February 2nd, national signing day.

Local Columbus products Jake Stoneburner and Mike Adams of Dublin Coffman continued their undefeated season with a 42-35 win over Hilliard Darby in state playoff action, setting up a semi-final with nationally ranked Cincinnati St. Xavier. Stoneburner used his size and speed to haul in 4 catches for 110 yards, including 2 touchdowns. Coming into the game, Jake had 67 catches for 1,159 yards and 13 touchdowns. His 6'6" 223 lb. frame is coupled with 4.46 speed and as long as he can keep his weight in this range, he should be able to continue playing WR at Ohio State.

Tressel was not the only Buckeye coach making recruiting waves recently. Thad Matta continued his recruiting success since arriving in Cbus and landed another top 5 class for 2008. The class is lead by 7 foot center, B.J. Mullens of Canal Winchester, who is ranked as the top center nationally. Mullens has impressed Matta from first sight and had a scholarship offer on the table before he even started high school.

William Buford is another 5 star recruit in this class. The 6'5" shooting guard out of Toledo is ranked amongst the top 5 shooting guards in the nation. Walter Ouffitt, 6'3" 180, is the defensive stopper of the group. Ouffitt becomes the third player Matta has been able to pluck out of Indiana and while he may not be the scorer Buford is, he has a defensive mentality and could defend multiple positions on the floor.

Rounding out the class is Anthony "Noopy" Crater, a 6'1" point guard, who is set to replace Jamar Butler. Crater is a top ten point guard who played on the King James AAU squad over the summer and may look to fit the mold of Mike Conley Jr. as a pass first guard.

Five Things: Michigan

Beanie WellsBarton knows.

The New King of A2 Dominates in Pain
As a freshman backup last season, Beanie popped a 52-yard touchdown run to give his Buckeyes the lead for good in the huge stakes battle in Columbus. After nearly being stopped in the backfield, Wells spun through a Shawn Crable tackle and outran the rest of the Michigan defenders to the endzone.

Yesterday in Ann Arbor, he iced the Wolverines again. Immediately after a Ray Small punt return touchdown was nullified, Wells got it right back by breaking a tackle at the line of scrimmage before juking the shit out of Michigan safety Brandon Englemon and finishing the 62 yard score. On the day: 39 for 222 and both of Ohio State's touchdowns. Money.

Going all the way back to the Washington game, Wells has been there to bail the team out all season. His 200+ and the way he ran out the end of the game against Michigan State, his 169 and 3 quick touchdowns to turn a close Wisconsin game into a rout and finally, when it mattered most, his performance against Michigan yesterday.

We've heaped love on the new receivers, given Boeckman his two weeks of crazy Heisman talk, but through it all, the Buckeyes have had one of the top running backs in the country chugging away through injuries and putting up monster numbers. His 1463 rushing yards on the season already put him at 7th on the OSU single season list. With a 100 yard performance in a bowl, he'll move into 5th behind Eddie, Byars and two Archie seasons. Not bad.

Defense Thankful to Just Get After It Again
Following the loss to Illinois, Gholston and Laurinaitis were critical of the defensive game plan used against Juice Williams and the read option. Give the coaches points for listening at least.

Several of the players expressed that the key to neutralizing Michigan's already limping attack was just lining up and playing with speed. Gholston expressed as much after the game:

"Sometimes, you run different schemes where you have to (lay back), do this and do that. This week, our game plan was just to go in there and play fast, and that's what we did today."

The Buckeyes will have to face an even better Juice-lead Illinois team next season in Champaign, so it will be interesting to see if the coaching staff learned their lesson from this season.

Mike Hart Goes Out Quiet
After saying the Buckeye defense was nothing last season and saying he'd rather lose another game to Appalachian State than lose a game to the Buckeyes earlier in the week, Mike Hart was relatively quiet after being held to his lowest rushing total of the season.

He had the following to say about the OSU defense:

"Give credit to the (Ohio State) defense. They came up with a great game and had a good scheme against us. The defense did a great job."

Huh? Where's the H20-4 we all know and who is this imposter? Mike's easy to despise, but he can ball when healthy and is one of those guys that makes the rivalry so great. He'll be missed.

Put on Your Favorite UConn Cap
With the Buckeye season over and the team needing some help to get back into the BCS Championship picture, we can look forward to a holiday weekend full of rooting for upsets. Lots and lots of upsets.

With Oklahoma expected to take care of the Kansas/Missouri winner in the Big 12 title game, and the very real possibility that if Georgia gets into the SEC Championship and dumps LSU, they could jump the Buckeyes in the BCS rankings, West Virginia is the team to actively root against. They have end the season with games against UConn (medium chance for an upset) and Pitt (near 0 chance for an upset).

If ever there was a time to get behind UConn football, it's right now. Go Huskies!

Speaking of Kings
He may be a Yankee fan, but there's no doubt where LeBron's college allegiance lies. I knew it was a great early sign when the celebrity introduction matchup was LeBron James against.. Braylon Edwards. Edwards is eating the NFL up this season, but seriously. Was Derek Jeter too busy?

Any chance LeBron's introductions planted a seed in a young stud hoopster's mind?

Beanie, Bullets Dominate Wolverines In Ann Arbor

beanierose.jpg Beanie's career day led OSU to at least a Rose Bowl berth (AP Photo: Paul Sancya)

Beanie Wells left no doubt as to who is the Big Ten's best back this season with a 39 carry, 222 yard, 2 TD performance leading Ohio State past an outmanned Michigan team in what was most assuredly Lloyd Carr's last beatdown at the hands of Jim Tressel.

Tressel became the first coach in OSU history to wax the Wolverines 6 times in 7 tries as the Buckeyes clinched the outright Big Ten title for the second consecutive season, winning at least a share of the conference crown three years running.

Even sweeter, the loss moved Mike Hart, Chad Henne, Jake Long and Shawn Crable to 0-4 against OSU, capping their careers in grand style while Lloyd dropped to 1-6 against The Vest.

Michigan looked like they might have a chance taking a 3-0 lead late in the first quarter capping a 49 yard drive with 33 yard FG behind Mike Hart's 5 carries for 31 yards but the Silver Bullets allowed just 42 yards of offense the rest of the afternoon behind a dominating defensive line that held Mike Hart to 44 yards on 18 carries while forcing Chad Henne into an 11/34 performance through the air.

With rain falling throughout the game and Todd Boeckman looking like a deer in headlights, Tressel opted to wear down the Michigan front with a steady dose of Beanie on the ground. Wells etched his name in the history of the rivalry chewing up the most yards by a Buckeye back in 104 years of The Game and put the game on ice with a 62 yard TD run giving OSU a 14-3 lead on their first offensive play of the 3rd quarter. Beanie's career day pushed his season total to 1,463 giving him a realistic shot at a 1,600 yard season.

The win secured at least a Rose Bowl bid although OSU still has an outside shot to get back into the national title hunt. Meanwhile, the Wolverines are left with a 4 loss regular season that began and ended with 2 game losing streaks. Most likely, they'll also be coachless with Carr expected to announce his retirement at a Monday news conference. See ya, Lloyd. It was fun kicking your ass while it lasted.

OFFENSE:

beanietd.jpg Beanie's 62 yd TD sealed the deal

Beanie Wells is a freaking madman. His 222 yards represented 80% of the Buckeye offense on a day where Tressel was not going to let Todd Boeckman have a hand in determining Ohio State's fate. With the big boys up front dominating the line of scrimmage in a steady rain Tressel called 59 running plays (229 yards) to just 13 pass plays, two in the second half. Even though Michigan knew the run was coming, they couldn't get a big play when they needed it allowing OSU control the ball for 38 minutes compared to just 22 for the Wolverines.

Early footing problems for Beanie combined with Boeckman's panic stricken play (slips, 2 fumbles, INT) stalled 6 of OSU's 7 first half drives but Beanie's 1 yard TD plunge capped a 44 yard drive giving OSU a 7-3 lead with 10 minutes left in the 2nd quarter.

After the Buckeye defense forced a 3-and-out to start the second half, Beanie took OSU's first offensive play of the 3rd quarter 62 yards to paydirt providing a 14-3 lead paving the way for another methodical Tresselball win.

With the defense shutting down the helpless Michigan offense, Tressel called 30 runs and 2 passes the rest of the way chewing up 19 of the last 27 minutes including 12 of the final 15. It wasn't pretty but it got the job done and that's all that matters against Michigan.

DEFENSE:

The Silver Bullets proved too much for Michigan's beat up offense allowing just 15 yards rushing amongst 91 total yards.

As usual, Mike Hart was stricken with diarrhea of the mouth in pregame and during the opening quarter as he rushed for 37 yards on his first 6 carries but became increasingly quiet as his final 12 carries produced just 7 yards. His 44 yards marked a career low for a game in which he had at least 17 carries complementing a horrific passing attack that connected on just 12 of 37 attempts.

hartgholstonfreeman.jpg Mouthy Mike averaged a gaudy 2.4 ypc

Like Boeckman, Henne struggled with grip under consistent pressure from the Buckeye front four. Vern Baby, Vern was unstoppable registering 5 tackles (4 TFL) and 3 sacks while linemates Dexter Larimore (sack), Cameron Heyward (3 tackles, 1 TFL) and Todd Denlinger (sack) helped dominate the Michigan offensive line without the aid of many blitzes.

With the big boys clogging the line of scrimmage, the linebackers were able to roam free. Marcus Freeman led the Buckeyes with 9 stops while fellow LB James Laurinaitis recorded 6 tackles.

The secondary did their part however they didn't need to do much with a banged up Henne floating ugly incompletions on half his passes with WR Mario Manningham dropping the other half.

Overall, the defense held Michigan to just 3-18 on third down and forced 12 punts. The 3 points allowed marked the 4th best defensive effort ever by the Buckeyes against the Maize and Blue and the 91 yards allowed was the worst performance by a Michigan offense since 1962. Sure, the Wolverines were banged up but today's effort is firmly entrenched in the record books.

One more quick nugget - Vern's 3 sacks gave him 13 to tie Mike Vrabel's single season record set back in 1995.

SPECIAL TEAMS:

A.J. Trapasso booted a career high 11 punts but put just 2 inside the 20 averaging only 37.4 yards per kick. That said, the punting unit should be commended for getting off all 11 punts without a low or bobbled snap and holding Michigan to 5.3 yards per punt return.

The Buckeye return game showed signs of life for the first time this season with Ray Small contributing several nice returns including a touchdown off a Michigan punt to start the 3rd quarter, although the play was negated due to a blocking penalty.

NOTES:

The outright title gives OSU 32 conference crowns including back to back outright titles for the first time since '54-'55...The Buckeyes are now 57-3 when leading at the half under Tressel...OSU has now beaten Michigan 4 straight times marking the 3rd time that's happened in school history...Robo has at least one catch in 24 consecutive games.

Like Clockwork

beanie1.jpgThere's a new King of Ann Arbor (AP Photo/Tony Ding)
Mike Hart 18 Carries 42 Yards 0 Touchdowns 0-4 in The Game
Chris Wells 39 Carries 222 Yards 2 Touchdowns 2-0 in The Game

Just when Michigan fan thought he was in the clear with the departure of Troy Smith, a new Wolverine destroyer has emerged. And he's only a sophomore. Eagerly awaiting H20-4's postgame comments.

The notion about a talent gap was proven true. Michigan couldn't block, run, tackle, catch or throw.

If the Gun Show is gone after this, his junior season, he went out with a bang. The defense as a whole -- 91 yards of total offense for Michigan -- wow.

That's also three straight Big Ten championships if you're keeping track.

Time to cheer for some upsets.

Opal McAlister Says Take OSU -4

opal.jpg

Props to WBNS for their piece on 103 year old Buckeye fan Opal McAlister and her recent meeting with Jim Tressel and the OSU football team. (Check the video segment on the story link)

Opal used her time at practice to preach clean living to the players and to get cozy with Coach Tressel. She said Tressel is the "third most important" person she's ever met behind FDR and war hero George Marshall. Love it.

Besides celebrating her 103rd by hanging with the Buckeyes, this legendary lady celebrated her 100th by cruising in a hot air baloon before taking a 135mph spin in a Laborghini on her 102nd.

Is it weird for me to say I've now got a crush on a 103rd year old?

Have A Great Weekend

Bleacher Bloggers Interview On The Game

bbloggers.jpg

The fine folks at Bleacher Bloggers conducted a quick interview about The Game with yours truly earlier this week and it's running on their site.

Check it out if you want to know what line of work Lloyd will get into after he's done in Ann Arbor.

So You're Telling Me There's A Chance..

We've tried to stay away from the hypothetical scenarios that had the Buckeyes getting back into the hunt for the big one, but things keep happening to get us thinking those crazy thoughts.

First and foremost, Ohio State must take care of business in Ann Arbor this weekend, but assuming they can do that, there's really no telling what's going to happen over the next few weeks.

Buckle up and ready yourself to root for teams you've never even given a passing consideration to in the past.

So, here we are. Michigan week. The 2007 edition of the greatest rivalry in sports definitely lacks the hype of the epic battle waged last season in Columbus, especially when you consider the fact that the two schools are both entering The Game on the heels of a loss -- something that hasn't happened since 1959.

Michigan, of course, was the favorite to win the league heading into the season. And that dream lasted all of about 59 minutes.

The Buckeyes, on the other hand, were considered to be rebuilding, but after the team raced out to a 10-0 record and a #1 ranking in the BCS, fans had much higher hopes until the Illini came to town last weekend.

Not quite last year's battle of the unbeatens with a national championship trip on the line. But, it's The Game. It's moves faster, hits harder and has the intensity of no other game on the schedule. The Game is what these kids go to these schools to play in.

There are the gold pants, with seniors like Kirk Barton going for his fourth pair of what was so elusive only a decade ago.

There are the talented Wolverine triplets that passed on NFL loot to come back for their senior seasons and one more run at the Buckeyes, the team they've never beaten. Hart put this best:

"How can I go down as one of the best running backs in Michigan history if I haven't beaten Ohio State? You just can't do that."

There's the rampant speculation that this will be Carr's final game at the Big House and his chance to go out a winner against a nemesis that has pretty much owned him since he arrived in Columbus.

And then there's the outright Big Ten title on the line -- the 43rd time that The Game will determine the winner of the conference. As hard as it is to believe, the Buckeyes have only been to Pasadena once in the last 22 years (that's what JHC's Michigan troubles and Tressel's BCS run will do to Rose Bowl plans).

If you're still having trouble getting up for it, consider the quote Rex Kern shared on the HBO documentary, of a tearful Woody prior to the 1970 battle:

"Don't you know who we play this week? Don't you know who it is? My God, it's Michigan! It's Miiiiichigan!"

Amen.

Opponent
After their disastrous start to the season, the Wolverines seemed to have righted the ship by reeling off eight consecutive victories. They were climbing back up the rankings and BCS murmurs were starting to emanate from A2, but a setback last week in Madison killed the march.

Still, they have a lot riding on the outcome this weekend. Should they win, they can send Carr, Hart, Long and Henne out with an outright Big Ten title. By sitting Henne and Hart against Wisconsin, Carr essentially traded a win for a better shot of getting over on the Buckeyes.

H20-3Win or lose, Hart will have something to say

Though Carr and the press have done their best to tease us with "will they or won't they play" stories all week, both Henne and Hart will play. You'll see Beth Burns flirting with guys before you'll see those two miss this game.

Hart, better known around here as H20-3, has already missed a few games this season and was completely held out of last week's game to rest his bum ankle. I don't need to say it, but he's a warrior and has had success against the Buckeyes in the past (3 touchdowns last year).

As much as he talked after the Wolverine's defeat in Columbus last season, he knows he has to bring it. Injured or not, he will give everything he has for 60 minutes on Saturday and stopping him will be a tall order for a suddenly run-weak Buckeye defense. No team has held Hart to under 100 yards this season.

Henne is a go as well, but may be more limited in what he can do or how long he plays due to the nature of his injury (shoulder). Last week against the Badgers, he was limited to two series worth of action before leaving the game after throwing a 1st quarter interception.

Should Henne's partially separated shoulder send him to the bench, Michigan will turn to freshman Ryan Mallet (#15). Despite decent numbers for a frosh, Mallet has earned the wrath of Michigan fans for his play, including some shaky work against the Badgers last weekend. The fans aren't the only ones upset -- playmaker Mario Manningham, frustrated with Mallet's play, was filmed engaging in a sideline confrontation.

We're going to take Manningham's side in that one considering he consistently makes plays that few other wide receivers in the college game can make. The junior from Warren will probably be playing in his last game at the Big House and his ability on the edge keeps defenses from loading up on Hart. He's averaging over 130 yards receiving and has a very Nintendo-like 10 touchdowns over his past six games. That's good.

Senior Adrian Arrington (#16) is having a decent season in his own right (716 yards and 6 touchdowns) and will receive looks as they Buckeye attempt to contain Manningham.

On the line, the Wolverines have future 1st-round NFL draft pick Jake Long (#77) holding down one side. Despite being a pretty good run-blocking group, the Michigan line has given up its fair share of sacks this season. After being neutralized by scheme last weekend, the Buckeyes will be anxious to get back after it a little on the pass rush and Michigan's two rather stationary quarterbacks could be in for a little bit of trouble.

The Wolverine defense is lead by yet two more seniors in linebacker Shawn Crable (#2) and Jamar Adams (#22). If you're keeping score and thankfully the HBO doc did a good job of this, Crable (Massillon) is yet another Ohio product, but considering his helmet shot on Smith last season and the way he's been racking up roughing penalties as of late, he may just be one the Bucks didn't want.

In the trenches, junior Terrance Taylor (#67) has been coming on as of late and has helped Michigan solidify their run defense. Crable and sophomore Brandon Graham (#55) are still the sack threats, but Taylor's ability to take on blockers frees them up to do their things.

Overall, the defense is not quite as stout as the unit put forth last season, but expect the home crowd to aid their effort.

Finally, there's the aforementioned Carr scenario. If his departure is, in fact, known within the organization, you can expect his kids to give everything they have for a guy that they seem to really care for. There's also something to be said for knowing it's one of your final few games. Perhaps the pressure isn't as great and you'll call a trick play (or two) or go for it on 4th down once or twice when you probably wouldn't if you were expecting to return for another season. Some may disagree, but I'd argue that there's a little less pressure for Carr if he's on his way out. Let loose. Have some fun. That kind of thing.

Notes: Michigan leads the all-time series against Ohio State, 57-40-6... Mike Hart needs 133 rushing yards to become the fourth back in Big Ten history with 5,000 career yards... has compiled a 17-8 mark against top 10 opponents and is 40-23 overall against nationally ranked teams... Carr’s only blemishes against top 10 squads have come against Ohio State or in bowl games.

Buckeye Breakdown There's a part of me that believes the Buckeyes will be an angry bunch in Ann Arbor this weekend -- out to prove that last week's loss to the Illini was not indicative of their level of play. I still hold firm in my belief that this OSU team is a great squad and can play with any team in the nation. They were picked off by a good team playing a perfect game last weekend, after having previously blitzed the rest of their competition. I mean, no game was really close before the loss.

The players seem to understand the gravity of the situation. Hartline had this to say:

"After losing on Saturday, we all apologized to the seniors. Now, this is the Michigan game and it is make or break. This game can't get any more important than this."

Barton is probably a pretty angry dude right about now, but the best way to cheer him up would be a 4th win against the Wolverines.

I want to believe it will happen. I want to think that as bad as Boeckman looked last week and as bad as he's looked at times this season, he's still sporting a 10-1 career record as a starter. I keep thinking about the defense that manhandled opponents all season instead of the unit that couldn't get off the field during the 4th quarter Saturday.

BeanieBeanie knows Michigan

But, I have to admit, for the first time all season, I'm pretty worried heading into a game. There's no question which squad has the better talent, the better coach, the better schemes and gameplans -- all that. But there are also so many things working against the Buckeyes.

Carr, the Michigan seniors playing at home for the last time, the fact that OSU has had their number so many times as of late -- they've got to find that proverbial nut every now and then -- even the JHC managed to get a couple.

Throw in the fact that the Vest will need to do the motivational job of his life getting the Buckeyes ready to go after having their BCS hopes dashed last weekend and you have letdown stew boiling pretty hard.

Oh yeah. Don't forget about the three dinged-up running backs.

How effective will Beanie be? How well will the Buckeye run defense perform now that the book is out on how to run on them? What does it say that two defensive stars are questioning the gameplan used against Illinois? Has Todd discovered what double-coverage looks like yet?

That's a lot of "how's", "what's" and "ifs". Despite all of that, I think the Buckeyes pull through. If there's anything the last 6 years have shown us, it's that Lloyd Carr can not matchup with Jim Tressel in these games. The Bucks have their anti-Cooper and that will be the difference once again.

The Vest will have something special in store for the Wolverines, like he always does and the talent gap will provide the final edge for the margin of victory.

Notes: Ohio State has won 29 of its last 31 games... Eight OSU players are in the hunt for national postseason awards... Ohio State has scored on its opening drive in nine games this season, the last seven in a row.

Against The Spread - Week 12

chris-webber-prn-008089.jpg Nas and Mars Blackmon, Erkel, Chris Webber

It's time to wave the white flag.

Last week, I posted a paltry 1-3 mark while Jason went 3-1 to move his season record to 23-17 against my rancid 19-24 tally.

Logic says I should retire to the Indian casino Clark W. Griswald visited in Vegas Vacation and try my hand at "Heads or Tails" or "Pick A Number Between 1 And 10" but I'll soldier on through the end of the season.

Since we're headed north 'til we smell it and west 'til we step in it, we reached out to Chris Webber to be this week's guest. It wasn't easy as C-Webb charged us his standard fee of 280k and a handful of prostitutes before agreeing to join our elite guest picker fraternity.

To his credit, C-Webb didn't lie to us like he did the grand jury and came through with his picks. Let's see how he stacks up.

Now on to the picks:

West Virginia (-6.5) @ Cincinnati (ESPN 7:45) UC's hopes for an upset rely on their ability to stop the nation's third best rushing attack. Past history says that might not be possible as Slaton and White have combined for 240 yards rushing in the last two meetings between the schools.

Chris: I never learn. WVU 31-23. Jason: The Mountaineers are shaky. The Bearcats win outright 28-17 (sorry Corey). C-Webb: Timeout! I mean, er, nevermind. Bearcats 21-20.

Kentucky (+7.5) @ Georgia (ESPNGP 12:30) GeorgiaSportsBlog says getting hyped for Kentucky won't be an issue following last year's game in which Georgia QB Matt Stafford was hit after his helmet had come off. Last year's 24-21 victory is considered the game that got Wildcat football back on the map. Okay, if you say so.

Chris: Georgia's on a roll behind Knowshon. 'Dogs cover 30-20. Jason: I agree. The Dawgs are looking tough right now. Georgia 31-14. C-Webb: Can I buy an ounce of Kentucky Bluegrass? Wildcats 23-20.

Boston College (+7.5) @ Clemson (ESPN2 7:45) Clemson has it sights set on earning a trip to the ACC title game but needs to win at home against BC to clinch. The teams are heading in opposite directions as BC has lost two straight while the Tigers are on a 4 game win streak.

Chris: I don't trust the Bowden clan. Clemson wins but doesn't cover, 27-21. Jason: Maybe wacky picks like this are what have helped me this season, but I think BC wins a close one, 20-17. C-Webb: This is one of the week's best games?!? Sad. Tigers 30-21.

Oklahoma (-8) @ Texas Tech (ABC 8:00) Tech coach Mike Leach was fined 10k for his comments regarding the refs in last week's loss to Texas and now his Red Raiders must face the Sooners in Oklahoma. I didn't see the game and don't doubt the refs were horrid considering the state of officiating in college football but at least it happened to a jerk like Leach this time around.

Chris: Eight's a lot of points but no way Tech stops the Sooner offense. OU 34-24. Jason: Sooners big 45-20. C-Webb: You think Stoops can get me a job at local car dealership? I got's court costs! OU 42-23.
