It's On

sec.gif

The pairings were just released and Buckeye Nation gets the game they wanted. A chance at redemption against the too-fast-for-human eyes SEC. And with all due respect to Georgia, the Buckeyes are getting the SEC's best.

Plenty of storylines in this one:

  • Tressel and Miles have recent bowl history
  • Miles is a Michigan man and enters the game angry at a Buckeye that is currently employed by ESPN
  • Miles turned down the Michigan job and if he manages to win this game, Wolverine fans will pine for the man until the end of time
  • The Tigers will enjoy home field advantage, but Buckeye fans will travel
Bup Shoutout

The Tigers now have a 3rd chance this season in which to prove themselves the best team in the nation, but they're taking on a Buckeye team with a giant chip on its shoulder.

Represent your school, conference and your fans, boys. Lord knows if we have a repeat of last season, we'll never hear the end of it.

Another Game, Another Collapse

mattaref.jpg Ref informs Matta his team is soft

Thad Matta must be feeling like Bill Murray in Groundhog's Day the way the early season is playing out for his Buckeyes. In what's becoming a disturbing trend, the team again failed to show up in the second half getting outscored 45-16 en route to a 65-46 ass whipping at the hands of Butler in historic Hinkle Fieldhouse.

No, that was not a misprint. OSU was outscored 45-16 in the second half wasting a 30-20 halftime lead.

The Buckeyes started strong continously feeding Kosta Koufos and Othello Hunter down low against the undersized Bulldogs. The two scored 14 of OSU's first 20 points as the Buckeyes built a 20-9 lead with 8 minutes left in the half. The lead would swell to 30-17 on a David Lighty jumper with 1:32 left.

OSU had a chance to increase the margin after getting the ball back with :23 but the Buckeyes continued their pathetic play out of timeouts as PJ Hill was called for carrying the ball leading to an AJ Graves 3 pointer at the buzzer trimming the Buckeye lead to 10. The three was Butler's first of the half after missing their first 15 attempts in a bit of foreshadowing for the second stanza.

Butler began the 2nd half by hitting 3/4 from downtown (finished 8/14) but the Buckeyes answered with 2 buckets apiece from Hunter and Koufos as Matta rightfully stressed the need to get the ball inside. The Butler threes got the crowd revved up but OSU still lead 38-31 with 13 minutes to play. Unfortunately for OSU, they would muster just 8 points over those final 13 minutes while surrendering 34 to provide the final margin.

Once again, ice cold shooting played a role in the collapse (29% FG in 2nd half) however a rash of turnovers proved just as costly. The Buckeyes committed a season high 24 miscues including 3 straight during Butler's 12-2 run that turned the 38-31 Buckeye lead into a 43-40 deficit with 8 minutes left.

The OSU backcourt was particularly useless as Jamar Butler took a season low 6 shots, making just 1 while John Diebler continued his poor shooting with a 1/6 effort. Worse yet, the duo combined for 10 turnovers against only 4 assists. Turnovers hadn't been a problem for OSU so far this season so playing their 5th game in 11 days might have finally caught up with this group, especially considering how short Matta's bench has been thus far.

On the positive front, Koufos was significantly more active finishing with 16 points, 7 boards and 3 blocks and David Lighty had a better night from the floor with a 5/9 effort, good for 12 points. Hunter chipped in with 10 and 7 but no other Buckeye managed double figures including Butler (5 pts) for the first time this season.

From my perspective, there are a few very troubling issues with this team. It seems they get absolutely zero easy baskets. The offense has to work for everything it gets and the inside game has only been fruitful against teams severely lacking in big bodies on the front line. Obviously, this is impacted by the wing players shooting poorly from the outside, particularly Diebler, allowing the defenses to sag on Koufos and Hunter. Another factor in the lack of easy hoops is the continuous zone defense look. It might limit some teams from the outside, protect Hunter and Koufos from fouls while helping hide our apparent lack of depth, but the set hasn't produced any breakaway layups to help boost the stagnant offense.

That said, I wonder if Matta might spend the next week of practice working on more man to man and look to incorporate the 3/4 court trapping defense used last season that helped create turnovers and/or force teams to initiate their offensive set with less time on the shot clock leading to lesser looks at the basket. The current matchup zone has been fairly effective considering just one opponent has broken the 70 point barrier but this team needs to find a way to score off the defense since the half court sets are so predictable.

One thing's for sure, Matta needs to get this team's attention during the break from game action because it's not acceptable to show up for just 50-60% of a game. They simply don't respond to adversity which flies in the face of what we've seen from every Matta squad to date. I'm not saying they quit when they get down, but they're certainly the softest team Matta has put out there since he arrived on the scene.

The good news is the Buckeyes face three straight cupcakes before facing Florida on 12/22 and should be no worse than 8-4 when the conference season begins January 3rd at Illinois.

Dear Recruit

oface.jpgThe patented "O-Face"

Dear Recruit,

When you sign up to play for this guy, you get to play for a national championship every 2.3 years.

Regards,
Buckeye Nation

You Never Doubted It Did You?

finally.jpg

I've been harping all year on the fact that the Mountaineers don't like to take care of the ball and tonight, that bit them in the ass. Ouch. On the home field and all. To the Wannstache?

The Sooners are up double digits on the #1 ranked Tigers in the 4th, but that's just icing on the cake (especially for residents of Athens, GA).

Is the 2007 season, the BCS' "Harriet Miers" moment? I can already hear congressman starting to bark about dear old state U being left out of the mix this season. I mean, do any of us have a clue as to who the two best teams in the nation are?

Get dem rooms booked..

Spirits High

sooners.jpgC'mon baby!

The Sooners and Tigers are all knotted up in an affair that will quite possibly come down to who has the ball last. I thought the Sooners were going to begin taking the game over after they scored easily on their 2nd touchdown drive, but Daniel and Missouri answered. His rushing touchdown with time running out in the first half lead to a pretty slick two point conversion to tie it up.

Hope for the Sooners to have the ball on the last possession of the game.

I'd be a little more stressed if it weren't for the fact that the WVU/Pitt game is surprisingly in play and Pat White is banged up. Late 3rd and Wannstache's crew is up 10-7.

Chaos! It's like having two hands in play at a Blackjack and your playing on free money.

Gameday Preview: OSU vs. #16 Butler

HoosiersMy team is on the floor.
Ohio State Buckeyes Ohio State 4-2, 0-0 Big Ten Roster | Schedule 7:30 PM ET ------ Hinkle Fieldhouse Indianapolis, IN. Butler Butler 6-0, 0-0 Horizon Roster | Schedule

Opponent: Ohio State faced a daunting task against the top ranked Tar Heels this past Wednesday, but tonight's visit to historic Hinkle Fieldhouse might provide a stiffer test. Butler is fresh off a title at the Great Alaskan Shootout, taking down Michigan (79-65), Virginia Tech (84-78 OT) and Texas Tech (81-71), earning national team of the week. Forget the mid-major BS, Butler is good and they have 6 of their top 7 players returning from last year's Sweet 16 team, when they became another victim of the Gator's march to the National Title.

The Bulldogs come in averaging 73.5 points a contest and most of those are from behind the arc, leading the nation in three pointers making an astounding 12.8 per game. Butler doesn't need to heave them up at a rapid rate, because they shoot 47 percent from 3land, ranking 4th in the nation.

As expected, Butler takes care of the ball, committing less than 10 turnovers a game, but their lack of height is apparent in their negative 2 rebounding margin, as they only grab 26.7 a game. Then again, a team is not going to have many rebounds when they can stroke it like Butler, connecting on 49% from the field and 78% from the stripe.

Key Players: Butler starts five seniors and are lead by A.J. Graves (#4 6'1"), Mike Green (#10 6'1") and Pete Campbell (#34 6'7"). All three were named to the all-tournament team in Alaska, are the only players in double figures and all shoot over 50 percent from downtown. Graves scores 18.5 a game and has made 29 of 56 (51%) three pointers, including 6 of 8 against Texas Tech. Graves was voted as the preseason POY in the Horizon League and he enters this game having started 96 of 102 games.

Mike Green helps Graves form one of the best back courts in the country, coming in averaging 15.5 a game and leading the team in assists at 5 per victory. He does not look to shoot the three as much, hitting 8-14 (57%), acting as the floor general he is coming off a tournament performance that earned him National Player of the Week honors from the Sporting News.

Campbell is a dynamic shooter, scoring 15.2 a game and hitting 26 of 49 (53%) threes. He is the single season record holder for 3 point accuracy at 52 percent last year and won't do much besides shoot from beyond the arc, attempting only 2 free throws and dishing out only 5 assists this year.

These three are joined in the starting lineup by Julian Betko (#1 6'5") and Drew Streicher (#32 6'7"), neither player seems to be a scoring threat, but will hound Ohio State's scorers on the defensive side. Betko is a Slovakian and has played in 75 straight games, but comes in only scoring 5.5 points a game and shooting a putrid 37 percent from the floor. Streicher is a former walk on done good and his coming off a 10 point, 3 assists game against Texas Tech. He is only pouring in 5.2 a game and surprisingly is not a rebounding threat, grabbing only 14 all year.

Butler will have 2 significant players coming in off the bench, Matt Howard (#54 6'7" Fr.) and Zach Hahn (#3 6'0" Fr.), but Willie Veasley (#21 6'3" So.) is coming off a knee injury and may see more time tonight. Howard scores 8.8 a game and is second on the team with 4.7 boards a game. He has scored double digits in 2 of Butler's games thus far, getting 12 against Michigan and 11 against Bobby Knight's team. Hahn probably won't see too many minutes tonight and hasn't scored in the last two games. Veasley gets a special shout out, as he is from my high school in Freeport, Illinois, home of the Pretzels, yes that is right, the high school mascot is a pretzel. He played in 35 games as a freshman last year and averaged 8 minutes over the last two games.

Notes: Butler set a Great Alaskan Shootout record by hitting 47 three pointers in three games... Head coach, Brad Stevens, is in his first year at the age of 31... Butler is 2-3 against Ohio State in the last five, including a 69-79 overtime loss two years ago.

Buckeye Breakdown: A wise man once told me that the rim is 10 feet off the floor and the free throw line is 15 feet away from the basket at Hinkle Filedhouse and unfortunately Ohio State has had trouble gauging those dimensions lately. Thad's team is capping off a run of 5 games in 11 days, playing against 4 ranked teams and in 3 historic venues. After their trip to Hinkle, Ohio State will get some needed time off, playing only twice in the next two weeks.

Ohio State has continued to stick with a zone defense and will probably continue that trend until they have time to practice over the next couple of weeks. I have been impressed with the level of intensity on the defensive side lately and this young team will need to cover the perimeter even more tonight. The Buckeyes should be able to pound the ball inside and get their scoring in the paint back on track after the UNC game.

Thad's boys are still struggling from the floor, shooting only 42 percent, while averaging 72 points a game. Ohio State relied too much on the threeball Wednesday night and while they are making over 7 per game, they are shooting only 33 percent from that range. With the dismal rebounding effort against North Carolina, Ohio State enters this game with a slight negative rebounding margin (-.5) and will have an excellent chance of turning that back around tonight. Ohio State has taken good care of the ball this year, turning it over only 11.2 times a game.

Key Players: I am not down on this team one bit, I knew this would be a tough stretch of games for this young team and they will continue to improve, but Ohio State needs more than just Jamar Butler showing up every game. Kosta Koufos had his second disappointing game this year against UNC, scoring only 4 points and grabbing 3 boards in 27 minutes. His average is down to 16.2 points per game, but still leads the team with 7.7 boards. He will have a huge advantage inside tonight and I will be shocked if he doesn't take at least 15 shots tonight.

Butler continues to play at an All Conference level, scoring 15.8 a game, while leading the Bucks in assists (29), 3 pointers made (21), free throw percentage (10-10) and assists to TO margin (29-8). He put this team on his back Wednesday night, taking a career high 22 shots and I know he will continue to be the leader this young talent needs.

John Diebler and Othello Hunter will look to build off their performances against UNC. Diebler broke out of his season long slump by hitting 5 threes and leading Ohio State with 19 points, while Hunter took on Tyler Hansbrough and finished with 10 rebounds and a career high 6 blocks.

David Lighty is still averaging in double digits with 10 a game and also leads the team in steals, but he continues to shoot poorly and needs to make a few more layups per contest. Evan Turner will be key tonight, as he turned in a goose egg against the Tar Heels. His length on defense needs to cause problems for Butler and his size should allow him to score at least a point.

Notes: Thad Matta is returning home to his Alma Mater, playing for Butler from 1988-1990 and coaching as an assistant and head coach from 1998-2001... Ohio State is playing 4 ranked teams over a 5 game stretch in the regular season for the first time since 1993... Ohio State has held their opponents under 70 points in 36 of their last 44 games.

11W Mix Tape: Sam Bradford Is The Shizzy Edition

11W Mix Tape

36 Hours and Counting.. Can you remember a game you were more hyped for that didn't involve the Buckeyes? I know I can't.

Here are five reasons why the Sooners will get it done and Bob Stoops/Sam Bradford/Allen Patrick/Juaquin Iglesias will be remembered with the same fondness that the OBC and Gator fans have for Tai Streets and Brian Griese:

  • Outside of their two losses (one without Sam Bradford), the Sooners have absolutely punked their opponents this season by an average score of 47.5 - 15.8.
  • For all the pub Chase Daniels has earned, Bradford has nearly idenical numbers on the season. In fact, Bradford will be looking to build on his NCAA freshman mark for TD passes in a season.
  • Sure DeMarco Murray is out this week, but backup running back Allen Patrick enters the game on the heels of a 200+ yard effort last week.
  • Bob Stoops vs. Gary Pinkel. And Stoops has him some bulletin board material.
  • The Vest has done his best to swing things back to good times, but it's not even yet. I am calling in this game for the three ruined national championship seasons of the mid to late 1990s.

Award Time
It's award season and several Buckeyes are in contention to be honored or have already been honored. In the "already honored" group is Brian Robiskie, as he was recently named an Academic All-American. Props to Robo for getting the hard work done on the field and in the classroom.

Of course Laurinaitis is a finalist for both the Nagurski and Butkus awards, but he was named a finalist for the Lott Trophy earlier this week as well. The 4th year award, named for Ronnie Lott, claims to be the only award that is based on personal character as well as on the field play.

Elsewhere, the Gun Show has been named a finalist for the Hendricks Award and defensive coordinator Jim Heacock is among five finalists for the Broyles Award, which goes out to the nation's top assistant coach. He'll have a tough time knocking off Missouri's Dave Christensen (barring a disaster this weekend), but he'll at least have bragging rights on his brother over the holidays.

Five Months and It's Escalade Time
The Dispatch's Ken Gordon believes that Jenkins and Gholston are a lock to declare for the draft, while putting the odds of Laurinaitis coming back at around 20%. He thinks Boone and Freeman will come back, but doesn't have any feelings one way or another on Robo.

His take is pretty much where we sit -- assume all of the good ones are gone and if a few come back, it's a bonus. It's 2007 and Buckeye fans know that kids tend to opt out early when given the chance to make some money. We'll never begrudge them of that, but we'd sure love for all of them to come back for one more run.

HulkamaniaLike Pryor Mania, but with trailer

Pryor Mania
Super recruit Terrelle Pryor continues his march through the Pennsylvania state playoffs and two weeks after he rushed for 331 yards and accounted for 5 touchdowns in a wild 70-48 victory, the hysteria surrounding Pryor is reaching critical mass.

There's the ESPN the Magazine photoshoot, online photo and video galleries and the parade of recruiters coming to pay tribute.

Tressel and Matta hopped a private jet to visit the stud a few weeks ago and Buckeye assistant Joe Daniels was in town Tuesday night to check on what could be the capstone of an incredible 2008 class.

Not wanting to be left out, Buckeye fans are are doing their part as well. "Right here. Come on!"

Paterno's Salary is Out
After a five year legal fight, Joe Pa's salary is a matter of public record and your hunch is confirmed. He makes more than you do.

The Ayers Era
For some of you younger cats that don't remember what Buckeye basketball was like towards the tail-end of the Randy Ayers era, this about sums it up.

Unverified Voracity Has Web Server Problems
You may have noticed the little BlogPoll widget in the bottom right acting up lately. Evidently the web server running the BlogPoll was a Carr fan and is now on a hunger strike, but Brian was able to pull together the composite, and it looks like the voters agree with some of you that thought we had the Gators too high.

Danny Sheridan Is No Fan Of Northern Football

Danny Sheridan, fuzzy like thatThere is but one fuzzy picture of me on
the internets. Biotch.

Oddsmaker Danny Sheridan recently shared his opinion of the BCS with the New York Times. The verdict -- he no likey:

"The two most important things to have are a good schedule and no conference playoff. It’s very uneven. It’s not a fair playing field.”

And:

"West Virginia and Missouri are not the two best teams in the country. I think it’s safe to say when the final two teams have emerged, it’s not a fair playing field.”

No beef with the guy there. Heading into Glendale last season, I was a huge proponent of a playoff system. This year, with the Buckeyes on the cusp of getting back into the championship game, I feel the same way. No fan on the outside whining here -- instead, a fan of a team that's has it good, but is still advocating change.

It's worth pointing out that the conference title games came about not so much in an effort to pick a champ, but more so to pad some wallets. The SEC and Big 12 innovated in this space and I believe the other three major conferences will follow suit eventually, but the powers that be at these conferences can't have it both ways.

They essentially changed the dynamics of the game for their conferences in a money grab and now they don't like the way it's working out.

Alabama resident Sheridan also thinks that UConn would be defeated by "a high school team in Alabama." To be fair, he did call the SEC Championship game back in August, but statements like that make him sound like, well, an Alabamian.

Against The Spread - Week 14

sooners.jpg

Another week, another loss as Jason went 3-1 to better my 2-2 mark in last week's action. For the year, Jason stands at an eye-popping 32-19 while I'm holding down "2nd place" at 23-28.

With the regular season coming to a close we've got numerous conference championship games on tap including the one in San Antonio that's supremely important to Buckeye Nation. It's almost like Michigan week around Columbus - everyone at the water cooler is talking Sooners v. Tigers.

Since I've been suffering from "Just Got A New Plasma" syndrome, I was too lazy to line up a guest picker so we're on our own this week. Reader Wil's picks will undoubtedly be in the comments section so let's just say he's this week's guest.

Now on to the picks:

Oklahoma (-3) vs. Missouri (ABC 78:00) The Sooners beat Mizzou in the first matchup outscoring the Tigers 18-7 in the 4th quarter to prevail 41-31 in Norman. In that one, the Sooner's forced 4 turnovers but to hear the Tigers tell it, they gave the game away. That fact isn't lost on the Sooners who are playing up the comments in the press. Talking aside, the Sooners need to contain studs Chase Daniel and Jeremy Maclin if they're going to send the Buckeyes to New Orleans.

Chris: No reason not to bet with my heart at this point...Sooners 31-30. Jason: Echo that. Oklahoma 55, Missouri 17.

Pitt (+28) @ West Virginia (ESPN 7:45) With Dave Wannstedt at the helm, not even Mrs. Wannstedt thinks Pitt has a chance in the 100th episode of the Backyard Brawl. Maybe that's a good thing in a season that's seen its share of straight up craziness but it's hard to fathom the Pitt defense hanging with the WVU-O. Hopefully, a drunken Mountaineer fan will misfire and hit Slaton or White with a car battery instead of an intended Pitt target sending OSU to Da Suga.

Chris: Wann'stache caps 3rd straight bowl-less season in style. WVU 48-17. Jason: Absolutely no hope in this one, but for some reason, I think Pitt keeps it somewhat close before losing 38-14.

Tennessee (+7.5) vs. LSU (CBS 4:00) Let's see if the best team in the history of college football from the best conference in the history of college football can salvage their season by winning the SEC title. That shouldn't be too much to ask since they also have the best defensive lineman in the history of college football. Hell, Tennessee might just forfeit considering how dominant this LSU team is.

Chris: I just hope the Vols can make it out alive against this juggernaut. LSU 28-20. Jason: Tennessee doesn't have a chance -- they'll lose in triple OT 31-30.

Boston College (+4.5) vs. Virginia Tech (ABC 1:00) The ACC title is on the line as the Eagles and Hokies do battle for the 2nd time this season. The first matchup saw BC hang on to their then #2 ranking scoring 14 points in the final 4 minutes to pull out a 14-10 win in rainy Blacksburg. As a result, the Hokies are eager for a shot at redemption. PSA: This is your next to last chance to hear the announcers rave about those Hokie special teams so don't miss it.

Chris: BC can't beat 'em twice but will get the cover. Va Tech 27-24. Jason: Neutral field helps the Eagles this time as they win by 28-21.
