I'll admit I haven't watched Buckeye football for more than 10 years but... The 06 game was one of the best games I've ever seen, period. Both teams hitting on all cylinders in a shootout, 1 vs 2, and wasn't without its fair share of drama.  The 06 squad fielded some of my favorite players to this day.

How does the '01 game get no love? That was the 313 days game, or wahtever. Bellisari goes out the day before with the DUI. In steps a young Craig Krenzel,(who?).  And I'll be damn, we go to Ann Arbor and beat those fuckers. I know we lost again to SCar in the Outback, but I believe that win set the tone for the 2002 magic carpet ride.

The 02 game would get my second vote. 12-0 heading into that game, everything in the world on the line, the late TD scamper by Mo hall set up by the big catch by Mo C. 14-9 baby Tempe bound!! 14 point dogs to the U and beat those fuckers too. I'll always remember the U's first touchdown and Keith Jackson saying "whoa nellie, Buckeye fans, hold your breath!" I did and didn't exhale for the next 3 days!!

It was "310 days", and Bellisari was actually suspended the day before the Illinois game.  We started Scott McMullen against Illinois, but played Krenzel in relief.  SB was dressed for the Michigan game, but did not play.  Krenzel started and went all the way for the win.  Krenzel also started the bowl game against the 'cocks, but was ineffective and so Tressell brought in Bellisari in relief.

2001 was the end of frustration for Ohio State, and a new era vs. TTUN. Tressel actually made good on his words.

loved the 2001 game. my buddies and i left campus and went to ann arbor and stayed with a friend from high school who was a student at the time at michigan. the evening before, we ran the keg at the worlds most pitiful keg party we'd ever seen (read: the greatest drinking session that school year at the saddest drinking school on the planet) and made every michigan student say "go bucks" every time they wanted a beer. as they are no-talent assclowns, they all said it with a smile on their poop-eating faces. pathetic.

the next day we watched as jonathan wells and some dude named krenzel led the buckeyes to victory in the big house. it was glorious. also, during the game, some guy kept throwing marshmellows at my buddy who was decked out in scarlet in the UM student section. my buddy eventually said to him, "if you hit me with one more marshmellow, i am going to punch you in the face." i guess that wasnt a clear enough message, as the dude again threw a marshmellow at him, and he calmly walked over and punched the guy directly in the grill. now im not a violent guy, and i dont like physical confrontation when its uncalled for, but if someone tells you not to do something, and tells you what will happen if you do, and you still do it - you deserve what you get.

go bucks, michigan sucks, help is on the way.

It's gotta be 2002, a game that had the flavor of a time warp back to games of ten years' war vintage.  Defense was a complete non-factor in 2006 and that's just not Big 10 football.  After charging the field in the wake of Will Allen's interception of Navarre, we unsuccessfully attempted to destroy the goal posts, only to be pepper sprayed by the Staties and corralled into the corner of the endzone exit via batons and brute force.  Later that night the riot police came out in full force and tear gassed all of off-campus east of High Street.  We had to place towels along the door cracks and window sills to keep the gas from seeping into apartments.  In other words, TWAS AWESOME.

Pam's picture

Wow, flashback to 1972 when we were protesting the Viet Nam war and against Nixon getting re-elected.  Tear gas is nasty.  Best sign of that time:

While it certainly wasn't a memorable game other than it was RR's first time in the 'Shoe, but the '08 game was my first UM game at home (you may remember that I received the tickets from JT).  It was senior day, so we said goodbye to Laurinitis, Boeckman and Jenkins as well as Beanie.  Tyson Gentry coming out last had the entire stadium in tears.  We froze our asses off, but that one will always be my favorite because I was there.

2006 gets my vote. Simply not because of how good we played (On offense) but because of what was on the line. Big Ten Championship and a trip to the National Championship. We broke the Wolverines hearts and haven't stopped stomping on them since. Everyone questions what college football's biggest rivalry is. If anyone says anything other than OHIO STATE vs. michigan then they are just wrong. When winning that game means more than Championships, be it Conference or National then you have yourself "THE GAME." I admit a National Championship comes a close second but tell me this, would you be able to enjoy it knowing you lost to Michigan that year. However unbelievable the scenario is, the Championship would be tarnished some in my eyes. Kind of like sharing the Big10 title this year with Wisconsin. Yeah Wisconsin lost a game this year just like we did. We lost head to head versus them and can't even hang our hat on the fact that we beat the team that beat them. Wisky should always be the most improtant game on our schedule next to Michigan. They are the only team to play us consistantly tough in recent years, moreso than PSU.

2005 Is next. Michigan could taste victory and we whipped that turkey leg out from between their gnashing teeth!

2002 third pick. No spoiler for Michigan. NC here we come!

I don't always take names when I kick ass but when I do, they most often belong to a Wolverine.

I had to go with '05 and the catch. I can't really site any huge factors other than being an underdog and having a fear that scUM was going to claw their way back into the rivalry and Tress had them fight to come back and stop 'em. That scramble and catch will forever be scorched into my memory.  I'm also reminded of it on a daily basis as Gonzo's signature framed pic of that catch is hanging proudly on display in my house.

Other games had more on the line nationally but that game meant more to me as we were the underdog and a lot of people had us losing that game before it was even played. The fact that we were down and came back is even more impressive.

This was also the first game I ever watched with my future wife who had to tend to my drunken stupor and still married me after seeing it.

I really liked the 2002 game.  I was on campus for it watching it from the Game Day set.  When the game was clinched, but an INT I believe, you could hear the whole city yell at one time.  It was an amazing atmosphere.  Around the game day set people were shaking beers their beers and cracking them open  beer was raining down it was great.  I did forsee a lot of trouble coming though so my buddy and I went to the car and got out of dodge not long after the game.

I also liked Troy's first start against them.  I think it was his first one, where he had a huge day with his arm and legs and basically they just had no answer for him.  I can't remember the year, maybe 04.  It may not have even been his first start, I'm hazy on the details.

The 2006 game was unbelievable as well.

2006 with Bo passing, #1 vs. #2. Night game, which took a way from it a little bit for me, but still great. I throw a party for the game every year since I now live up here and have my friends from Ohio come up, we play a football game in my backyard at halftime, we still played in the dark that year. It went back and forth, Beanie Wells ran all over them, they had no answer for the stiff arm of justice. That is one of the greatest games of all time, let alone one of the greatest Games.

I love tem all, for different reasons....like Julius Erving said above, it's like picking which child you love the most.....2001 for the new era and a promise delivered......2002 for the feeling of playing for it all after a great win against a hated rival.....2005 for the amazing comeback and "the catch".....2006 for the awesome display of offenses and keeping alive a slim (at the time) chance to play for it all again......1998, well, gee, thanks Coop, too bad you only won one other time in 13 years and wasted some incredibly talented teams seasons along the way

BucksfanXC's picture

Your last point is what I key on, ppl keep saying the rivalry is lack luster since UofM sucks over the past few years, to which I say, I don't care, I still want to beat them, and it's like the early 1900's games where they used to own us (won 9 in a row from 1901-1909) and all my friends used and still do use that as argument material, "Well we still own you overall" and I'd say those years where we sucked didn't count. But it is the years where we were equal in the 60s that made it a rivalry, and the years where we were better with Cooper and yet still lost. I want to get to the point where they are good and still lose. I don't want them to be better, but they will have years where we are re-loading and they aren't so they will be. That's when we will get to pay them back for 2-10-1.

I'm with you Johnny.  Troy Smith absolutely went off.  Ted Ginn Jr. with that punt return.  The very begining when Smith bounced around the pocket I was screaming just run the football, then he hits Gonzo on the bomb.

aside from the TG punt return, troy doing that spin move of his on ALMOST EVERY PLAY was amazing, partly because it worked every single time and partly because it was so slow and looked like something i would do on the playground.

also i attended texas in 05, and michigan in 06 and i never, ever saw the crowd as insane, loud and furious as they were when OSU was down early

shout out to 2007 when we absolutly shut down that hart (so much for that second shot at us), henne, and jake long offense and beanie running wild

96 yards of total offense and 15 yards rushing for UM.  Beanie with 222 yards on the ground.  I think Tressel had a chubby the entire game long.

All of them have been fun in their own ways. 2002 mostly because of what it led to, 2005 because of a comeback and the making of a hero (Troy Smith), 2001 and 2004 because it was just hilarious to beat them, 2007 because it was an ugly smashmouth game that Woody would have loved, and even 2008 when we smashed the bastard's teeth in.

But 2006, boy oh boy. Never will there be a more emotional and great game than that one. Like Shakespeare, that game was not of an age, but for all time. Buckeye football could cease to exit from here on out and the smallest part of me would be happy to have that 2006 game a part of me for the rest of time.

"I can assure you, you will be proud of our young people in the classroom, in the community and, most especially, in 310 days in Ann Arbor, Mich., on the football field."

He backed it up and for the first time EVER (because Tress started the tradition) Carmen Ohio was sung by the team in Ann Arbor.

Our long, national nightmare was over. Yes, 2002 is so important for so many reasons (the Fiesta Bowl, the perfect season, the chance for TSUN to keep us from getting any momentum in the series),  but on that field that day in 2001 we had a coach who understood what it means and what it takes.

GO BUCKEYES!!
