That team I saw today was pathetic.  Worst $80 I have spent in a while.  We have no second option on this team.
Our ceiling is Sweet 16.

Columbus to Pasadena: 35 hours.  We're on a road trip through the desert looking for strippers and cocaine... and Rose Bowl wins!

Whenever I see panic I think of that awesome scene in "semipro" when the bear escapes.

Not sure yet.

"YOLO" = I'm about to do something extremely ignorant/stupid & I need an excuse to do it.

It's hard to win on the road remember what happened to the last Buckeyes team that played @Illinois? I believe that's when they woke up and rallied as a team and had a pretty nice finish.

VHX7's picture

True, but that team was never down by 24 points in that game. This game was truly a pathetic effort. I don't remember us getting dominated that badly since at least 2009 at Wisconsin, and that was without Evan Turner.

tampa buckeye's picture

Pretty simple really they were making shots and we didn't.  If Ohio State doesn't shoot well they are a very avg. team due to the fact they refuse to take the ball to the basket with strenght.

GeneStarwind's picture

Unacceptable, not Big Dance worthy if they play like that against competition the rest of the way.

Jason Priestas's picture

They're definitely NCAA Tournament worthy. Just not sure we can expect much beyond the 2nd round until they get some things figured out.

Normal Buck's picture

Definitely?  Simply based on talent/potential?

chicagobuckeye's picture

They were ranked in the top 10, while preseason rankings don't mean much, they have lost 3 top 10 teams and they were up against Duke and couldn't close. Making the tournamet isn't an issue they are 11-3 and play 8 unranked teams so assuming they win those that makes them 19-3 and at that point most wins will be good wins, and any loss won't be a bad loss.

Normal Buck's picture

But at some point, won't they need a quality win?

buckeye76BHop's picture

Press Panic....they've lost to ever team that has been ranked this year.  Not a good sign for the B1G tourney nor the Big Dance...not a good sign what so ever.

They have lost to 3 top 10 teams. Do they need to get better? Yes but take UCONN a few years back you get hot at the right time and you win it all.

Nkohl13's picture

They need to pull it together because that game S.U.C.K. SUCKED

johnblairgobucks's picture

This year who knows, they may pull together and be a fun under dog to watch come NCAA time.  I'm more in panic mode for next year.  They'll lose Ravenel, and if Thomas goes Pro, they are going to be lucky to score 40 a game.  Chris Jent needs to start putting in 120hrs per week helping these guys shoot, or OSU will need to lower the basket to 8 foot for these guys to win against a solid team.

Buckeyefan52's picture

We'll have Ross who can score and Del Valle can shoot 3s and 2 scorers coming out of high school. Also craft and Scott will be better along with smith. We won't be THAT bad. Not saying we will be good but we won't be bad

johnblairgobucks's picture

Also craft and Scott will be better along with smith

just like this year?

Buckeye in Illini country's picture

Ross can't score based on what I saw today.

SPreston2001's picture

And what does Ravenel have to do with scoring?? Thomas will be missed but Ravenel never got me excited...

chicagobuckeye's picture

Who do you put down low to score? Williams? He needs to signifcantly work on his scoring before you can say losing Ravenel won't be missed. He's not exciting but he's the only big guy putting any through the hoop.

This question depends on what your personal expectations were coming into the season. I personally thought losing sullinger and buford would not hurt us this badly. A lot of stuff was bad today and Illinois was more than ready with a big time home crowd.

If they lose one like this at home then yes, PANIC. But they obviously played much better than this at Duke which is arguably a better team and should have been a tougher environment. I don't know, I think this team is much better and capable of beating Illinois but they came out flat and lacked a lot of hustle. From what I saw, the moment Illinois hit their first two shots to go up 5 the team was like "here we go again" and just sucked the rest of the time. Very deflating loss after such a good performance on Wednesday.

So like I said in the beginning, it depends on what your expectations were before the season. I'll hold off on the panic button and let Matta coach to this in film. If they come out like this again at Purdue? I think? Then yes panic button in full effect and 1st or 2nd round exit in the tourney.

kr66osu's picture

Coming in I predicted sweet 16 at best, at this point I struggle to see this team making it past the first weekend.
I see us going 0-4 against IU and Michigan, and probably only winning home games against the other good B1G teams (and that's if we're lucky). I'm extremely disappointed to see this team completely regressing rather than improving, that's not what this team typically does.

abrahajc's picture

cannot shoot. they aren't very fun to watch in these big games and its frustrating when they go through strretches like the 4-17 to start the game today.

Yamosu's picture

I pay 10 bucks a month for the big 10 network so I can watch these guys?  It would be better spent burning it.

SPreston2001's picture

Honestly I really didnt expect much other then maybe a sweet 16 exit for this years team. We depended on Sully so much these last few years so I knew once he left we would have some growing pains. We dont have a pure shooter or a dominate force in the middle to compliment Thomas. Amir has potential but he hasnt hit it full stride yet. Hell we dont even have a pure scoring machine! Never had my hopes up for this years team so its kinda what I expected...

allbucksallthetime's picture

The other top teams in the B1G can defend, too.  As much as I hate to say it, the lack of "O" has been and will most likely to be a large issue going forward.  There are NO easy goals for OSU anywhere on the floor...3-pt shooting is sub-par and there aren't many who do shoot it in with any degree of regularity, no big man who can score inside, no slasher who scores at the rim and/or gets to the FT line, little scoring on the "O" glass, and limited scoring in transtition.
This version of the Buckeyes will be close to .500 in conference play.  Go Bucks!

btalbert25's picture

Nothing is won the first weekend of January.  This team has hung tough at Duke and against a very good Kansas team.  There are problems sure, but it way way way way way too early to freak out about anything.  The B1G schedule could be a struggle, but all this team has to do is get hot the last 2 weeks of the season and they can make a run in the tournament.  Look at what 2011 Kentucky did.

Jack Fu's picture

It's too early to write the team off for the season, but it is most definitely not too early to freak out. I hope they improve (and, um, massively) but this team looks bad all-around so far.

buckeyebart's picture

Still a lot of balling to be done. However, we are who we are. No big man presence to score, no second scorer, still not so great on three point defense ( we lose good shooters too often )
Thad will rally these youngins a little bit, but 8-9 seed is our best possible NCAA seed. Depending on draw, we may win one game, but no more.

I never saw what the big frickin deal was about Deshawn Thomas... hes ok but POY potential? Cmon man

At one point he had 20 of ohio state's 40 points.  He can light it up.  The problem is he has no one outside of #32 that can put the ball in the hoop.  #32 doesn't hit his shot and this team doesn't go.

Optimistic Buckeye Pessimist's picture

Maybe not panic, but there's too much to be improved before March for this team to be a contender.  I was hoping we'd have another team to run deep this year, so I'm disappointed because I don't think my high expectations will be met. So, I will lower these expectations and look forward to watching this team (hopefully) improve throughout the year and enjoy some good basketball from young, talented players.

Poison nuts's picture

Not sure about panic, but genuine cause for concern after this game - that was a poor performance & must be improved upon quickly. Hoping for the best.

CMON one game Thad will figure it out its not like we lost to Penn State.
No reason to think it was just one game and they will figure it out

I'm a friend of thunder is it any wonder lightning strikes me

Poison nuts's picture

Can't speak for others, but I'm still very optimistic, love our coach & team - just concerned about that particular performance. Definitely must be improved upon by March...

Kind of expected it. Hell, we lost 30+ points per game with Sully's and Buford's exit. Was hoping for Ross and Williams to emerge but they still look lost out there a good amount of the time.

Im panicking more about Thads ability to develop talent

He can't make them better shooters.  Problem is if 32 doesn't hit everything he hits nothing. Craft love his defense and toughness but his shot is a kmart blue light special jumper.  Amir plays too soft downlow not sure you can teach toughness you either have or you don't.

Brutus's picture

Turner, Diebler, Lighty, Buford, Sullinger...didn't all these guys get better over the years.  I gues Sullinger was just always good, but the other guys really improved from their Freshmen to Junior/Senior years.  Hell, Scott has really improved since last year.  I don't see how we can question Thad's ability to develop talent at this point.  Just because Williams and Ross aren't superstars yet? First, they are still very young and inexperienced. Second, maybe they just aren't that good.

Normal Buck's picture

Did Buford get better?  I think what gets some concerned is like you say, that guys like Ross and Amir are certainly inexperienced - despite the fact they've burned a year of eligibility.

Brutus's picture

According to his stat line, he improved every year but averaged the same ppg in his soph and junior years.  Yes, Buford got better despite all the hate he received on these boards last year.
I don't know enough about basketball to assess whether Ross and Williams are developing at an appropriate level. What I see are two sophomores who didn't play much last year and are struggling with more playing time this year. This seems natural to me. The problem is that we were talking about how great both guys were going to be before they even enrolled. The burning a year of eligibility is a catch 22. Matta could have played them more last year and they'd be more experienced now, but then we might not have made the Final Four. Or we're in the situation we are now.

tampa buckeye's picture

I liked what I saw when they actually pressured full court and thought Craft played his ass off in the second half.  They can build on that in the future full court pressure and get easy lay ups off turnovers.
When your shot isn't falling you have to get tough.  We have a great full court defense time to put that to use.  Matta needs to figure it out

Brutus's picture

I'm panicking, but i realize that I've had unrealistic expectations. We've been very spoiled by the bball team over the last few years.  We lost Turner and defied logic by being better the next year.  We lost Lighty and Diebler and defied logic by being better the next year.  Hell, we lost Oden and Conley, and while we were definitely not better, I still enjoyed watching them win the NIT the next year. I guess i figured we could possibly be better after losing Sullnger and Buford even, but that's obviously not the case.   I haven't seen a lot of improvement from this team since Duke which is concerning, but for me this season is now about getting the young guys in a better position to succeed for next year, which is probably what the expectation should have been a long.  If they take us for a ride in the tourney and have some big wins against the B10's best along the way, all the better.

ShowThemOhiosHere's picture

If OSU lost this game 74-72, I would've voted that it's tough to win on the road in the B1G.  But there's no reason in the world to get blown out by Illinois.  I get that they're a good team, but come on.  I will believe that this team is a real contender when I see it.

Class of 2010.

buckatron32's picture

I'm not panicking, but only because my expectations for this team dropped after the Duke and Kansas performances. They are having a down year, which is understandable given they lost Jared Sullinger and didn't have an impact low post player to step in for him. All programs have years like this, even the "blue bloods" that people on here are envious of. Just look at Kentucky and North Carolina this year, or UCLA the last few years. This team will still make the tournament and it will be interesting to see if they can adjust and grow in time to make a serious run. Amir Williams will be the key,and I'm hoping he takes a step forward with more playing time by the end of the year.
