I'm actually contemplating making the trip out to Cal in September. Never been to Cali, but have checked on some plane tickets/hotels, etc.
Question for those who may know: hotel rates in Oakland seem much cheaper than SF. What type of area is downtown Oakland? Would I be better off paying extra to stay more in th San Fran area?

Do not stay in Oakland. And don't stay in Bezerkeley either. If you are spending the time and money to come, stay in SF. Much more to see and do. There is nothing in Berkeley worth seeing or doing and Oak-town is a hole. You can take the BART into Berkeley from SF, so don't need to worry about driving. And fly into OAK. Much easier & usually cheaper than SF and also has BART access.
I live in SoCal, but visit SF/Berkeley quite a bit for work/pleasure. Feel free to hit me up if you want any additional information like restaurants, clubs, bars, ect.

I'm a bay area native and my family has had this game marked on the calendar for as long as it was scheduled. Cal tickets aren't a high demand item with the local population so it'll be easy to get them. This guy's advice is very accurate. Not much in Berkeley for an out-of-towner except for food.

Use this site if you are looking for secondary market tickets. It will give you prices from all the major sites, and tell you how the deal is looking. Obviously you can try through 11w, but just a suggestion.
My crew will be driving up with an RV Thursday night from LA. #PlantingTheFlag early with some booze & Bay Area friends. We have a buddy from our under grad who graduated from Berkley Law that is making the flight out from Cleveland, as well as other friends from Columbus and other parts of this fine country! Look for a huge RV with a planted flag and stop by for a booze pop!!
