Can we make it so that Upvotes/Downvotes have to have a reason provided with them? I feel like there is a lot of downvoting going on because they don't agree with someone's opinion (which I don't believe is proper use of the system). Just my thoughts and I will probably get downvoted for it.

Once you have a certain number of helmet stickers you gain the ability to up or down vote a post. I think you have 11 right now so you have a ways to go.

Good luck changing the children's way of doing things around here...if ppl don't like you they will down vote you...no matter what your comment is. I wish they'd just get rid of it personally...been saying it since they started it. Too many immature ppl around to have it utilized correctly...

I agree with your overall idea of doing away with the whole voting system. To many people getting way to upset about being downvoted. Life is full of downvotes and up-votes just get used to it.

Seriously guys (and girls), its a downvote on an internet blog. Don't let it upset you, as it means absolutely nothing in the real world. The best thing to do is to just go about your business, don't even acknowledge the fact that you got a downvote. For one, when you complain about getting DV'ed theres a chance you will probably get a few more DVs. Just ignore them, a lot of people like me are out there who will upvote a post to counteract a downvote they believe was unjustified

Its not a matter of upvote or downvote. Basically each comment starts at 1 Normal. You can ascribe characteristics to each comment (Trolling, Normal, Funny, Informative, Interesting, Underrated, Overrated, FlameBait, Redundent, Offtopic, Insightful) if you have a 100 points. The things in bold make your number go down and unbolded go up. Not sure how it works when people select different titles to label a comment. I vote rarely but judiciously when I read comments on Mgoblog.

Why not just get rid of the downvote option? It's much more of a distraction than a help. I don't mind getting downvotes at all, but I can't even count the number of threads I've seen derailed into a downvote discussion over the last year or so. In that sense the downvote is a pain -- a thread on a football or recruiting topic suddenly becomes a topic discussing why someone got a downvote. This seems to happen to several threads a week.

I think keep the upvote option (that way people get credit for good posts), get rid of the downvote option. If the argument is that the downvote is needed to control troll posts, just slap a report flag on there like most forums have, if people are that averse to the post make them click the report flag, type out a legitimate reason for flagging the post, and let the mods decide if they want to deal with it.

While I don't think entering a reason for down-voting every single time is a good idea, you do bring up an interesting possibility:

There are always more positives votes to give than negative. If someone is voting down over a certain number of times per day (5, 10, 15, 215) maybe a prompt could pop up only then? With that being said, I don't know how possible that is with coding on the back end.

If it violates the commenting policy, downvote it (the staff has been vigilant at removing such posts recently). If it discusses politics, religion, is abusive towards other users (personal attacks), is unsubstantiated or doesn't add to the discussion/is otherwise ignorant and stupid (for instance, TP sucks and was never a good player), downvote it.

Downvotes should come based on content only, not based on whether you agree with a person or not.

I think the only way to fix this is for the staff to show how many upvotes/downvotes you have given. I don't know if it needs to show exactly who or what you downvoted but if you look on someone's profile and they have 1000 downvotes given they are probably one of the serial downvoters.

Also I wouldn't mind seeing the amount of times I have been downvoted/upvoted in my profile if that is possible.

Said it before and I'll say it again: Either a) Allow upvotes at 50 Helmet Stickers, downvotes at 150 or 200. That way people get a chance to get used to the community around here before they can get all downvote-happy.

b) Limit the amount of downvotes anyone can issue during a day.

Also, pet peeve- I get tempted to down vote when a person asks a question that can be easily discovered on their own. Have a question about recruiting, ask it. However, if you want to know the score of a game - look it up yourself.

I'm forced to downvote to compensate for Citrus's charity upvote. Basically, Citrus is responsible for all of my downvotes. How can I tell if it's a legitimate upvote for good content, or if it's Citrus feeling sorry for someone. Come on people, is this topic even Forum worthy. It is what it is. On this site, not everyone gets a trophy and sometimes members don't grade on a curve. Spirited debate is welcomed, but not everyone will agree with you. You disagree with a member on one topic, only to find that you agree with that same member on a different topic. Any member that grew up with a younger/older brother understands that one. Roll the dice, get involved, and let the the chips fall where they may.
