Thought we had a thread recently on why people upvote/downvote; but I have noticed lots of dvs lately for comments that seemed pretty benign. I upvote things that have a good point, are clever, or make me laugh. I downvote trolls and nonsense.

I think so too, MN. He's got an in your face type humor, which I like, and has taken the downvotes for it, but has done so like a champ. As I said over the weekend, though, it seems like he may have a stalker.

I see a lot of down votes when someone disagrees with a comment. Doesn't really make a friendly environment for discussion.
The downvotes tend to rain down not for disagreement so much as for disagreement that questions authority. I love that we scored Urban Meyer as a head coach and think that he is the best out there. Any criticism of Meyer tends to draw scores of downvotes. Same, though to a lesser degree with Matta.
I like the patriotism/loyalty inculcated by growing up and going to school in Ohio, but think that it is sometimes extended to the point where it becomes an ideological straightjacket.
Case in point is if someone criticizes (for example) the linebacker play of 2012. Downvotes are coming .... and "they're just kids for pete's sake"
I like that we support our own, but how can otherwise rational, intelligent people say that Luke Fickell was a good head coach???

I could not agree more. Any criticism of a fan favorite brings out the down voters in droves. Just because Craft plays great D doesn't mean criticism of his should be banned. We're not here for an awards ceremony, were here to "discuss" our opinions.

Not true. I attacked John Simon for the better part of 14 weeks this year and seldom got down voted. I will tell you why I didn't.
When I said "John Simon isn't a first round pick"-I gave reasons why I felt this way. Now, Squirrel Master, BuckeyeJason, and a few others met my comments with legit reasons of their own as to why I was wrong-but the point both sides were making had reason and substance to it. I didn't say "John Simon Sucks" and they didn't say "John Simon is awesome". What both of us said made sense and was backed up with opinions based on observations.
People critical of fan favorites-hell of any players-need to give reasons. If they do, more often times than not they won't be hit with as many down votes as they would if they come out and say something not without an explanation.
There is also the 'lead off theory' I have. If you lead off with something immature like, say "Aaron Craft is the most over rated player in OSU history" and leave it at that, nothing you say beyond that will get met with anything but venom and down votes. My point-say something of substance first and you will be just fine.

It all comes down to how you present your argument, really. If you're reasoned and stay away from hyperbole, while stating facts/observations, you're typically good.

I believe the 11W staff is supposed to take care of people who have trends in downvoting certain people all the time. I think this thread is kind of silly. I've downloaded a lot of people for what I thought were moronic comments and I've upvoted a lot people for what I thought were very intelligent comments. Don't worry about downvotes... I don't think we are in a contest to see who can get the most. I don't believe any Dry Goods are rewarded for votes. Just speak your mind and who cares about the downvotes/upvotes you get.

I saw a thread recently that was started a while back on making the voting history of members view-able to everyone. There was more than one user who admitted that they ONLY downvote and never upvote, and that they were afraid that this was going to create some animosity towards them. Well, I thought it definitely should. Upvoting should be your default. If all you're doing is taking people's stickers away, you should find another site.
But all that said, 11W can see who votes on posts and how they voted. They can identify these downvote trolls if we make them aware of a thread in which it's happening.

Down votes should require a reason, not a name, but at least the rationale for the DV. That would end the pettiness and encourage give and take conversations.
The reason could even be a checklist option;
Why did you DV this post;
Check all that apply;
01. Profanity
02. Racists/sexist
03. Repeat offender, same topic over and over.
04. OP thread content, misleading extreme.
Personally I rarely DV someone and it is usually because of their reaction, rude tone to a reasonable post, or question. Name calling is fairly immature, and lends no quality to the conversation. Opinions are why we are here. Fighting over anothers opinion by responding with anything other than a rationalized rebuttal demeans the responder and dilutes the content.
Having said that I enjoy the quality of give and take and the humorous twists. If I want insults , profanity, derision, well heck I can just call up the ex for that.
