if a comment on a forum thread/staff produced article produces more than 10 down votes, I believe that that comment should be pulled/blacked out from the thread/article. Each commenter with voting ability only gets one up vote or down vote per comment, and if a comment is judged down votable by 10 users, then it's pretty obvious that it is a non-productive/argumentative comment. There is really no need for certain comments to be left displayed that rack up 45 down votes. At some point, beating a dead horse is happening to posters that may have had a lapse in posting judgment.
If a poster feels that his comment is really important, even after it gets down vote removed, they can always re-post their opinion and give it a rip, or think about possibly rewording their opinion, so their point is better communicated/less argumentative.

By that same arugment, no comment should be left at ten but then again its a lot easier to get 10 downvotes for a forum topic versus 45. My solution, would be to set the number between 10 and 45. One that isn't too low (because its not hard to get -10) and one that is not as blatant as 45. Maybe 25? Moreover, why should 11W tell us this number? I could easily see someone abusing this and getting that last downvote, pushing that user thread over the cliff...
Good idea though.
Ohio State's band SLAUGHTERED Michigan's band. If this were a football game, it would have been Florida State vs. Savannah State. - SB Nation following OSU vs. UM 2012
You could do something like if it reaches a margin of 10 or 15 more downvotes than upvotes, then it's removed. I could see removing a comment with 10 downvotes and 0 upvotes, but not so much if the comment has 8 or 9 upvotes.
Class of 2010.
The downvoted comments are the best to lol at though. Removing them would be upsetting
I like leaving them as well. It serves as a reminder of things not to say, or how not to act.
Scorched earth style.

I dunno, are we talking net downvotes or gross downvotes? I recently had a post referencing "The Greatest Freakout Ever" video that I personally think is quite funny. 19 folks approved of the comment but 18 some odd people disagreed that it was funny and downvoted the same comment. Which simple math suggests the comment had a total of +1 votes. This kind of thing happens all the time....not just to me but lots of posters on here. I'm not whining about the downvotes or anything, I'm just using this as an example to pose a question. Is it fair to remove a post that has -10 downvotes but +25? Or any combination thereof.....where's the line drawn?
"I'm One Bad Buckeye, and I approve this message."
if up votes minus down votes = > - 10, remove
talking about net downvotes being 10 or so...
I also agree with the 'net' downvote score of -10... I try to upvote more than downvote as a general rule, but if someone posts multiple inflammatory messages (such as racism, etc.) it won't be long until the downvotes take care of the problem.
If a commenter wants to stop the bleeding, the answer is simple: Edit the comment and apologize or simply just remove the offending passage.

But if someone replies, editing is locked out, isn't it?
time to find out.
Usually, I downvote people that post about downvoting and/or the rules and responsibilities of downvoting someone that downvotes and/or the downvoting of a forum thread. However, JohnBlair gets a pass for posting the guy ringing that bell on the Va Tech game thread a few weeks back. If you pull the comments after -10, it's harder to swing the banhammer to -50. Giving the forum thread a +1, because I still laugh when I picture that dude ringing the bell.

ha....thanks cajun.
Just had an idea and wanted to share. The best place to share ideas is in the forum.
Unless you say something others don't like then you get downvoted and are forced to go sit in a corner for a time out or something! I like the system for what it is although sometimes you wonder why people are downvoting some comments when they're not a big deal either way.
lol @ the downvote troll on a thread about downvotes.
edit: I'll just upvote everyone to counteract him/her
