I posted this on another thread, but think it may be an idea worth discussion. I am not saying it should be done, just warrants consideration.
Instead of upvotes for comments, I propose that we change it to an upvote the poster. Once you vote on the poster it applies to every post they make, it just indicates how you feel about them. So it would always be up, down, or neutral. It would also be able to change depending on the ever changing nature of the interwebs. You may not like one thing they said, but they may be able to redeem themself with future comments and you can change their downvote to an upvote. The helmet stickers could still be tracked, but now it would just indicate how many people generally like what you have to say, and it would be a much better way of attributing that someone is a good and valuable poster rather than just sheer volume. Additionally, it would allow someone like me that forgets user names a way of tracking whether or not I like what someone has to say without having to remember everything everyone said and their usernames. Finally, it would eliminate serial downvoting, when someone says one thing you don't like, and then just downvote every additional comment they make in the thread.

It also can be done in addition to the current system. Just have the rewards be something else like Heismans or whatever. I could also see it being the decider on whether or not people get the right to vote themselves. Something like ten people must upvote you as a poster before you can vote yourself.
Oh yes, and please downvote if you don't like the idea. Intended consequence am I right?
Maybe the down votes were for creating a new thread for something you already stated in another thread. And it is not like there aren't already numerous threads on helmet sticker ideas.
but maybe you should start a new thread again complaining about down votes. We don't have enough of those.
Thought it might be a good idea. Appreciate the constructive criticism. Don't care about the down votes. Started it in the site stuff forum area and stated clearly what it was about in thread title, so if you don't want to read it don't open it?
The only really frustrating thing is, I know if I say what I want most of the time I will lose posting priveledges altogether, but at this point I guess I don't really care. Starting to feel the theozone/scout around here.
I don't think it really captures what the system should be. If one post is inappropriate, it should be downvoted, but it doesn't necessarily reflect the poster's norm. I think the issues with helmet stickers that exist now are inherent, but not necessarily detrimental, and are evened out by the normative structure that they impose.
Exactly. You. I like you.
Everyone vote more. There are very few idiots, and guess what, they vote a lot. The rest of us need to vote more often and they will matter less.

Not really big on this idea, but I feel like if a poster gets a certain amount of downvotes in 1 day they should be banned from posting for 24 hours. Usually when somebody gets on a roll they just continue to piss everyone in the thread off even more.
sorry, SEC, meant to downvote you. Slipped the finger and accidentally upvoted you.
:)
(anytime there's a thread about the upvoting/downvoting system - I find it funny to dv everyone. No hard feelings, it just cracks me up for fun)
#Joshy_Flex#
downvoting everyone for "fun" is an easy way to get the banhammer. It's a dangerous game you are playing there... Joshy.
~Because we couldn't go for three~
oh geeze, Jester --- don't get your panties in a bunch. Take a simple joke, man. Holy crap --- you're a little sensitive aren't you? And, the banhammer? Grade school threats? Get over it, dude...learn how to take a joke. You take yourself way to serious.
Maybe everyone should stop bitching about getting downvotes?
if only it were that simple
If you guys can't quit complaining every time you get a downvote or two, I swear. No one should complian if you get fewer than 5 downvotes. 5 idiots downvoting you is almost a compliment. If you get 10+ downvotes, you probably deserve them. And if someone is going around downvoting everything you say, send an email to the admins. We don't need a damn new thread everytime anyone gets butthurt over a couple of downvotes.
“Any time you give a man something he doesn't earn, you cheapen him. Our kids earn what they get, and that includes respect.” - Woody
This is basically what comes to mind in terms of up/down voting...
I wasn't specifically complaining about them. If you read my post completely, I also suggested maybe implementing this in addition to the current system. And the waaaah another thread about the voting system is a tired complaint. It is in the proper forum section, the title clearly states what it is about. If you don't want to read, just don't open?
Another way to accomplish something similar to what I am suggesting is just allowing us to ignore users. I think a lot of forums have this function and it should be easy to incorporate.
I think we should geat rid of the system altogether. When people put time into a post and get downvoted they get angry. And angry posts are bad posts. Tempers seem to flare a lot more often now than they used to.
I don't really care too much about it...but maybe just have upvoting only.
People are touchy about the voting hahaha
"You win with people." - Woody Hayes
I dont really care about it either. It just seems like people are being so whiney and combative. It gets old quick and I think the voting has a lot to do with it.
I think the whole thing is just really dymb... but you have to play along because if you don't you could be systematically banned from posting pretty quickly. Because there are consequences for having low numbers of helmet stickers you are forced to care, and that is stupid.
I get that this was a way for us to "self-mod" and works great when someone is legitamitely being a giant a-hole and trolling. But take what happened to me for example. I got in a debate with Alex and EVERY POST I made in that thread (even talking about other things) was downvoted. I lost something like 60 helmet stickers because I disagreed with Alex.
Dumb
Cause I couldn't go for three
You lost 60 stickers because you:
1. Were so into being right
2. You argued with the most popular and most knowledgeable person on the site
3. You were wrong
4. You were inarticulate
5. But you wouldn't shut up
6. And now you are continuing with posts explaining how you meant the same thing, how the system is bad etc.
I would have downvoted you more, but I skipped all your rigamoroll posts explaining how you and Alex are of one mind. The posts afterward were worse than being wrong in my opinion. It's not about anonymous me, and it's not about anonymous you.
1. He was right.
2. Popular? You in high school? Knowledgeable? You think doing little interviews and stealing information from the Scout premium board is knowledgeable? I would give that title to Ross.
3. Once again, he was correct.
4. Totally disagree.
5. Jealous of all the attention he was receiving?
6. Kind of agree, when the homer board that this place turned into turns on you, just move on.
Gotta give an up on the high school reference.
He might have been technically right (hard to dissect argument - it was dense and convoluted) but he said it to bolster the point that the scholarship limits don't affect the recruiting efforts, and that is plain wrong.
I do like attention, but not the kind he got.
Completely disagree with you. I understood what he was saying and he was merely passionate in his opinion while not being offensive. He was entirely correct on his point. If only we had more posters who wanted to come here and actually discuss things from different viewpoints. Instead, now that we have this voting system, we don't debate anymore and we down vote things and opinions we disagree with. Now there are more posts of garbage pictures and .gifs without any content to get upvotes. Finally, we also have more posts remarking on why one flipping person voted something down or how people are voting than we do about Ohio State, you know the whole reason we come here.
Good post and I agree with the points about the opinion nazis. Also agree about the off topic sensationalism, but think some of that is generational and some is from posters who don't differentiate what social media they are using at any given time.
I still disagree with you about the recruiting numbers post. After the first 2 or so posts, it ceased to be substantive and more to the point, an argument that less scholarships available does not affect recruiting fails the straight face test.
I still don't think you get what he was saying and then of course, when you know you're right yet no one comprehends or tries to comprehend your point, I think we both would do the same thing as he did. His basic point was that the years recruiting class is really no smaller than it would have been if we didn't have the reductions. His point is whether we have 85 or 82 scholarships, we already had a year where we got the roster to hit this number. Therefore being at "roster max," the only factor that determines the recruiting class is graduation and attrition. So as long as you assume that the staff tries to operate at max roster and does not bank scholarships, last year was the year where we reduced incoming scholarships via the recruiting class to get the roster to 82 and this year and the next will follow graduation and attrition as every other class. Alex and your point, which is also right, is that if we didn't have the reductions we'd have three more bodies on the roster or space for three more on the roster. But again, as long as you assume the staff is always trying to fill the roster to max, then the actual size of this years and next classes would be no different with or without reductions.
Stealling form Scout's premium board? Are you serious?
It's one thing for you to go around downvoting people for no reason whatsoever. We took away your voting privileges for that. But to imply that Alex is stealing information from the Scout board?
When I make an epic comment, I should be allowed to upvote by self.

I don't always comment, but when I do, I prefer to make epic comments.
Pretty sure you do already, you haven't had the chance to use it yet though have you?

Sometimes I down vote on accident - I'm usually on a tablet & the buttons are close together...that said - this was an interesting & fairly angry thread to read. Good bye angry thread.
