So I was looking for a refresher on how the helmet stickers work, and spent at least half an hour trying to find a link to that original post. I gave up and decided it was nowhere to be found. I then proceeded to spend another half an hour or so trying to prove myself wrong. I'm sure I probably just missed it, but I eventually went all of the way back to the Skull Session where this was announced.

Does anybody know if there is indeed already a link to this somewhere, in the commenting policy maybe? If not, is that something that might be worth adding to save others the trouble that I went through trying to find it?
It would make sense for Jason (et al) to pin the link you referenced above in the "Resources" section below to make it easy to find.
@Albino, you basically need to get to "fitty" helmet stickers to be able to up/down vote comments. I can't remember if you can even see them at your stage.
I think the general consensus around the site is, don't be a jerk, upvote if you like something or someone makes a good point. And dowvote the folks that post comments that violate the commenting policy or if they do something combative or disrespectful.
For the love of God, don't downvote someone just because you disagree with their comment or any dumb reason like that.
Also, downvoting trolls is encouraged. Good luck.

there needs to be more ppl like ONE BAD BUCKEYE on here!! People are always down voting just for disaggreing. Im not like that. If I like something ill upvote, but just because someone has a different opinion dosnt mean ill give you a downvote 4 it. Everyone is intitled to there own opinion. +1 for you OBB

741, it seems like many people have commented about accidentally down voting people, especially on mobile devices. So who knows, maybe that's it. That, or somebody just thinks you are an idiot. :)

As for voting philosophy, One Bad Buckeye pretty much has it down. One thing I'm starting to do is downvote gross spelling or grammatical errors (as in not a simple typo, but several in a comment). It just makes Buckeye fans look bad.

For one...I downvote every post I see that asks why they got downvoted. Just my opinion...swallow your downvotes and get over it. Its not that big of deal. I have been downvoted a lot of times cause i post whats on my mind. Which usually gets me some upvotes and some downvotes. If u are so afraid of some downvotes don't post, but if u are usually being constructive the upvotes will out weigh the downvotes!

In the grand scheme of things the helmet stickers aren't important at all, STU. What they have done has helped eliminate trolls, because you need 50 to upvote/downvote. It has also encouraged more commenting, keeping the site fluid and fun. I think they have been a welcomed added extra to an already superb site.

Not only that, but if a reader drops below -50, they are effectively shut out of posting anything—new forum topics, blog posts and comments—to the site. As Doc mentions, they're a great troll deterrent.
