How would everyone feel if I killed the "Recent Comments" pod on the top of the site? It's a relic from our early days to help visitors easily follow the 10 comments a day that would flow in, but I feel we may have outgrown it.
Thoughts?

up to you, I don't mind it though
It helps if you're in a discussion.

I still use it.
I use it.
I've used it 3 times already today.

I really like it. It's like a quick link to the conversation.
Its VERY useful. That's what keeps me "in the loop" when trying to follow at work.
Run_Fido's favorite word is strawman.
I say keep it. I use it pretty often

I use it all the time....like when my OCD checks the site every 10 minutes, I can check that to see if anything else has posted....yes, I need a life....
Yeah, for us OCD on it ever 10mins ppl, it comes in handy.

Interesting. I just assumed it was so fragmented right now with it displaying comments that may go to many sources (front page stories, forums, user blog posts) that it had outlived its value.
Even if all of the comments are pointing to the same source, you're probably missing about a dozen or so that precede the four shown since you last checked.
So, keep it because we hate change (that's a human condition that affects all of us to some degree) or keep it because it's genuinely useful?
Both

Or keep it and expand it to be able to view those otherwise skipped comments? Like a scroll option or something.
May I suggest an option that would only show quotes from threads you've commented on? Maybe a dropdown with options on what quotes you'd like to see?
I use it. Honestly, it could be bigger and go 20 comments deep and I'd use it even more.
I use it all the time.

No matter how sh*tty the tour is, it's always tough to leave.
I doubt we expand it because that's valuable real estate and the ads on this site are what keep it totally free for you guys. I'm still leaning towards killing it, but will think it over.
I want to kill it because the more money that we make the sooner we can hire a full-time beat writer to go to every event and honestly, I always cringe when I see an F-bomb in the recent comments. We don't want to censor comments, but I hate seeing those types of words at the top of the site.
Jason, heed Steve Jobs, don't do focus groups! We don't even know what we want! Just give it to us!
Anyway, I look at it and use it, but probably wouldn't miss it if it were gone.
Fair enough. Keep the site free and moving forward. I'll work on self-censoring the occaisional off color speech in the mean time. It's difficult because swearing is one of the great pleasures of my existence.
How much character filler do we need before we can 'bring tha ruckus'?
I use it, but not a whole lot - the jump-to-new comments feature is a bigger deal for me than the recent comments box.
Taquitos.
Ha. I think if you wait to bring the dirty words until about character 30 or so, you're good.
Will do my best to not sully the precious real estate as long as the recent comment box is still live.
Taquitos.
Appreciate it.
It's essential. You have a community, here. This device is a means for us to catch up.
I think I have changed my mind about this one so I decided to trace back and find this post. Due to the absolutely huge growth in the number of commenters on this site I find that the recent comments section can't really keep up so it is kind of rendered pointless anyway...a month ago I wasn't so convinced.
Maybe we push it down?
I regularly look at the recent comments and appreciate that I can click on a comment and go directly to read it in its entirety. My two cents is "keep it."
I use it all of the time. Maybe something better would be a "What's New" box keeping the conversation/s going and not trying to scroll threw old posts. But whatever is good for you guys will be fine with us. Just keep it free.
I still think we should keep it, and further expand on it by including a link at the bottom of the pod pointing to a larger list of recent comments.
Just my opinion.
Even how often I check on here now, because there are so many more ppl here and using the blog and forums more often, it's really out dated. So get rid of it, or at least expand it, maybe with a link to an expanded list. I know you want to at least move it down to get more ad space/revenue, so I'm cool with that.

I used it today, but expanding it through a link would be good.
Come on MAN!!!!!
I found this Section using it. I like it.

i use it a lot.

I love it. It helps me to quickly get into conversations without having to guess which article the comments were directed towards.
vacuuming sucks
Just an FYI: I use it on occassion but not nearly as much as "Recent Posts" link, which is just a much more comprehensive way to get an overview of where the "action" is and what you've missed.
Do what you guys gotta do-I'll give 11W all my support in this matter.
