Breaking Bama: Why Urban Meyer's Ohio State, in recruiting and on the field, might be the best candidate to take down Nick Saban's Alabama (cleveland)
COLUMBUS, Ohio – Nick Saban knows what it's like to worry about Urban Meyer.
On Dec. 6, 2008, in his 26th game as the head coach at Alabama, Saban and the undefeated No. 1 Crimson Tide lost to Meyer and the Florida Gators, 31-20, in the SEC Championship game.
“Alabama spent the entire offseason with a burr under their saddles about that,” said Phil Savage, the former Browns general manager who now serves as a radio analyst for Alabama games. “They spent the whole summer studying and getting ready for Florida and the zone-read offense. I would say Nick has a healthy respect for Urban.”
On Jan. 6, 2014, five years and one month later, Saban and Meyer could meet again.
Ohio State recruiting: State Secrets, 10/9 - Payton Dastrup could be key for basketball class (LGHL)
With Ohio State losing out on another big man, Thad Matta is now turning to Arizona native Payton Dastrup. Four-star receiver Trevion Armstrong has began to hear from the Buckeyes and check out how Curtis Samuel is doing so far this season.
On a slow recruiting day, the biggest news of the day came when highly touted center Elbert Robinson made his decision to take his talents to LSU next year. There's no answer as to why the hardwood Bucks aren't having much success with the big men, but there's no doubt that Thad Matta and his staff will continue their search to find one for the 2014 class.
An emerging candidate could be four-star Payton Dastrup. At 6'9", Dastrup holds offers from BYU, Arizona, Arizona State, UNLV and obviously, the Buckeyes. Most importantly, the Arizona native is scheduled to be in Columbus on the weekend of October 18th, which he first told Land-Grant Holy Land last week. There's nothing more that coach Matta would want then a commitment from the big man. Currently, Dastrup is a crystal ball lock to BYU, according to 247Sports, but we all know the tide can change at anytime once a prospect sets foot an campus. Living on the west coast, the regional schools will be tough to beat, but given Matta's success on the recruiting trail, Ohio State will never be completely out of any race. This is a huge one to keep an eye on moving forward as things will start to heat up closer and closer to this visit date. Since summer, Dastrup has been on visits at Arizona, BYU, and Virginia last weekend.
To football, current New York commit Curtis Samuel has continued his terror, ripping through competition so far during his senior campaign. One of the most explosive athletes in the entire class of 2014, Samuel's elite speed has him primed for a huge career as a Buckeye. Check out his highlights as we are midway through the high school football season.
