H.S. buzz | Tigers-Titans tickets going fast (hampton roads)
Tickets sales have been brisk for Friday night's highly anticipated, nationally televised showdown between Oscar Smith and Lake Taylor. The game, scheduled to kick off at 8 p.m. at Lake Taylor, is the season opener for both teams and is expected to be a sellout.
Lake Taylor's stadium normally holds about 2,500, but additional bleachers are being brought in. Including a standing-room area, Lake Taylor athletic director Bobby Pannenbacker expects capacity to be about 5,000.
Alabama, one of the top three finalists for five-star Hinesville (Ga.) Liberty County linebacker Raekwon McMillan, has been trying to make up ground on the top team on his list, Ohio State.
Now it appears that the third team in his top three, Clemson, may be Ohio State's biggest competitor for his signature. McMillan visited Clemson last weekend and watched the Tigers' 38-35 win over Georgia, telling 247Sports after the trip that the Tigers had made "a big jump for me." "Clemson was on the come up when they first started recruiting me and now they are right there at the top," he said. "They have been telling me for a long time that I do not need to go to an SEC school to play for a good defense and beat good teams. They really showed what they have been teaching me throughout my recruitment there - that I can achieve all my dreams and get to the NFL at Clemson."
Inside look at Ohio State pledge Kyle Berger's life after his ACL tear: Buckeyes recruiting (cleveland)
CLEVELAND, Ohio – On the bright side, Kyle Berger is allowed to wear sweatpants to a school that has a very strict dress code. On this day, he wore them with Sperry’s Top-Sider boat shoes, his white socks exposed and all.
He smiles while gazing at his friends as he uses crutches to walk through the hallways at St. Ignatius, a private school that requires its students to wear a dress shirt, dress pants and a tie every day.
It’s the little things that are getting Berger through game week these days.
Ohio State attacks QB search early, offers New Jersey 4-star Brandon Wimbush: Buckeyes recruiting (cleveland)
COLUMBUS, Ohio - Urban Meyer opted to wait until rather late in the 2014 recruiting cycle before sending out scholarship offers to quarterbacks, the reasoning being that Ohio State's head coach puts such an onus on recruiting the right players at that position.
But when a dynamic talent comes around, sometimes waiting isn't always the best policy. That was specifically the case with 2015 quarterback Brandon Wimbush, a highly touted dual-threat prospect of Jersey City (N.J.) St. Peter's Prep.
Ohio State sent out two offers on Tuesday to Maurice Smitherman and Josh Sweat. Is Jacques Patrick starting to look like a more realistic possibility? Drew Richmond calls Ohio State his "childhood favorite" and receives attention from the staff and is LeBron James' locker a useful recruiting tool?
Starting off with a bang, 2015 cornerback Maurice Smitherman picked up an offer from Ohio State early on Tuesday. Smitherman checks in at 5'11", 178 pounds and currently holds offers from Miami (FL), Texas A&M, and Arkansas. Though we are a long way away from National Signing Day for 2015 prospects, the corner back position for this class with be interesting to watch as the Buckeyes are chasing several, as usual, and are already sitting pretty with Maryland native, Ashton White. Smitherman has not yet been ranked by 247Sports, but that should change soon. With the kind of speed Smitherman possesses, it's inevitable that big time plays will come and, when they do, the entire country will start to take note of the Buckeye recruit from Alabama. LGHL's Charles Doss caught up with Maurice after the offer; see what he had to say.
Earlier this afternoon, Rivals.com released its newest 2014 basketball rankings. Topping the list once again is Chicago big man Jahlil Okafor, an Ohio State target. Right behind Okafor is SMU commit Emmanuel Mudiay, followed by Stanley Johnson, Cliff Alexander and Tyus Jones. For Ohio State, three Buckeye targets crack the top 75. Lets take a look at each of them below.
D'Angelo Russell: No. 21
Committing to Thad Matta and Ohio State in June, Russell, a shooting guard from Montverde Academy, is the highest-ranked Buckeye commit. Finishing strong on the summer circuit with a Peach Jam championship, a second-place finish at the AAU Super Showcase, and a stellar showing Adidas Nations, Russell is a cant-miss prospect. With a deadly offensive skill set, Russell can from anywhere on the court, and did exactly that in Orlando at the Super Showcase. One of Russell's top performances came in the Final Four in Orlando, when Russell's 19 points and 11 rebounds lifted Each 1 Teach 1 over Ja'Quan Newton and Team Final out of Philadelphia. Russell's double-double came in front of Matta, who was visibly impressed with his 5-star prospect.
