St. Clairsville played against my alma mater, the Claymont Mustangs tonight, and I was there watching and doing some radio updates. I was specifically interested in seeing Ferns.
I am not a Division I college coach, not a talent scout, never coached high school, I'm just a guy who likes football. First off, Ferns is impressive physically. He stands out, especially in the group of players who were out there tonight. His speed is evident for his size.
However, he is not a very physical player. On defense the Claymont linemen, none of which should be mistaken for a future Division I lineman, were taking him out of most plays. I honestly only recall hearing his name called a handful of times, and none of those were behind the line of scrimmage.
In watching him play, he seems to lack instincts and aggressiveness. He has all the measureables you would want, but didn't necessarily seem to want to come up and hit anyone. He looks like the kind of kid who would be great in a combine setting, or even a 7 on 7. But, when lined up opposite an offensive lineman who isn't intimidated by him, he wasn't overly impressive.
Anyhow, those are just my thoughts and in 5 years when he is a 2x All-American, Butkus winner and first round draft pick I'll look like an idiot for posting this.
