Welcome to another edition of the Ohio State football recruiting notebook. There has been quite a bit of major news on the Buckeye recruiting front since last Friday and we're here to tell you all about it.
The biggest news of the week came last Friday, Saturday, and Thursday when the Urban Meyer and the Bucks scored their 12th, 13th, and 14th commitments of the their 2014 recruiting class.
Leesburg (GA) Lee County quarterback Stephen Collier started this week's string of commitments last Friday. Indianapolis (IN) Cathedral wide receiver Terry McLaurin followed by committing to the OSU last Sunday. Finally Chicago (IL) De La Salle Institution offensive tackle Jamarco Jones ended the week with a bang by committing to the Bucks yesterday.
Trout has been active helping OSU recruit football players (Lancaster Gazette)
LANCASTER — On Feb. 10, when Lancaster offensive lineman Kyle Trout verbally committed to play football for Ohio State, his title immediately changed from recruit to recruiter.
When Trout told Buckeyes coach Urban Meyer he would join the 2014 class, he added he wanted to make it the best in the country.
“You could say it was my time because I had just committed,” he said, “but I just figured that if I could start recruiting right away it would overall help the team in the end.”
Since his commitment, Trout has been active in recruiting other football players who are entering their senior season to join him in Columbus in 2014. That class currently has 13 committed players and Trout said he thinks he has had a hand in some of those players’ decisions, specifically Cleveland St. Ignatius linebacker Kyle Berger.
Michigan on right track with Cleveland Glenville stars Marshon Lattimore, Erick Smith (Detroit News)
For as long as he could remember, Ted Ginn Sr. had made a habit of putting others before himself. Then last year the longtime Cleveland Glenville football coach was forced to change that mindset. After being suddenly stricken with pancreatic cancer, the man at the head of one of the country’s most talent-laden programs had to step away from it. But now six months removed from treatments and with a clean bill of health, he has retaken the helm for the Tarblooders.
“It’s an honor and a blessing to be back,” Ginn said. “God gave me another chance. It definitely was hard. When you lay down for about 60 days, that’s tough. I think what really got me through it was what I do for a living -- having love and passion for children, having my school, and having my programs. If I was a selfish man I would be a dead man. Just having the kids and wanting to get back to them and my family, it saved my life.”
The much anticipated wait for '14 OL Jamarco Jones' decision is finally over, and the Scarlet and Gray came out on top after Jones chose the Buckeyes over Michigan and Michigan State. Jones hails from the state of Illinois and checks in at 6'5", 290-pounds and had offers from some of the top programs in the country, including Notre Dame, Florida, Florida State, and many others beyond his finalists. Jones joins an already loaded Ohio State class of 2014.
There are still linemen on the board for Ohio State, including '14 OL Jermaine Eluemunor, '14 OL Chad Mavety and '14 OL Demetrius Knox (although Knox didn't seem too thrilled about Jones making it three linemen commitments for Ohio State), so the recruiting efforts don't appear to be slowing down on that front. Also of interest, is that Ohio State jumped 13 spots in the 247 football recruiting team rankings from 16th all the way to the third best recruiting class in the country. With still plenty of time left for teams to recruit, it might not mean much, but we'll see how it all plays out these next few months.
