Today is the last of the three day Nike point guard skills academy and big man skills academy going on at Kean University in Union, New Jersey. Most of the nation's top high school and college ball players are in attendance, including Buckeyes guard Aaron Craft and current verbal commit D'Angelo Russell. The 6-4 180 pound left handed Russell committed to Ohio State earlier this month over the likes of Louisville and Michigan State and was a key part of a Montverde Academy squad that went 27-2.
Class of 2015 point guard Isaiah Briscoe is also attending the point guard academy. Hall of Fame basketball writer Frank Burlinson recently told Land-Grant Holy Land that the 6-3 210 pound five star prospect is one of the best scorers in high school basketball regardless of class and plays as physically as you will see at that level. Isaiah has a offer list to back it up, The Buckeyes, Arizona, Syracuse and Indiana are just a few of the schools trying to add his skill set to the mix. Phil Booth, former Mount St. Joes (MD) teammate and good friend of incoming freshman guard Kam Williams, is also on hand at the camp.
BRADENTON, Fla.-- The IMG 7-on-7 National Championships usually brings out some of the most talented prospects from all over the country. Local standout Vincent Jackson, of Tampa (Fla.) Jesuit, was in attendance once again, and he also helped lead Team Tampa to its second straight national championship.
The class of 2014 linebacker/defensive end knows that 7-on-7 events are not exactly set up for prospects who play his position to succeed, but he also knows that colleges are impressed with his ability to play that style football.
"I'm just trying to get better with covering people," Jackson said. "This really isn't an event where a linebacker shines; it's really a wide receiver/defensive back event. I'm just here to help my team on both sides of the ball. I've been playing 7-on-7 for a while now and, I mean, colleges are always impressed with that type of stuff."
Carmel High School senior receiver Austin Roberts hasn’t narrowed his college list yet. But there are four schools that might be a little ahead. Those four are University of Miami, Florida, Ohio State and USC.
“Those are the schools that I’ve had the best relationship with at this point,” Roberts said. “But nobody has been ruled out.”
Roberts’ father Alfredo Roberts, the Indianapolis Colts’ tight ends coach, was a member of two national championship teams at Miami, the second one under then-coach Jimmy Johnson. The elder Roberts later played for two Super Bowl champions with Dallas under Johnson.
Roberts will be competing in The Opening in Beaverton, Ore., June 30 through July 3. After that, Roberts will take a visit to USC. His only other visit came as a freshman before he was being recruited. Roberts is considering a career in broadcasting.
The Michigan football coaching staff seems to have narrowed its focus on offensive linemen in the 2014 class to one player: Chicago De La Salle tackle Jamarco Jones.
The Wolverines have already landed two prospects – Tarpon Springs (Fla.) East Lake four-star Mason Cole and Paramus (N.J.) Catholic three-star Juwann Bushell-Beatty – at that position. Jones is next up.
Jones will announce his college commitment Thursday afternoon at his high school. Michigan, Michigan State, and Ohio State are the three schools remaining in the hunt.
"It's tough picking between these schools, but I am ready to get this over with and go back to being a normal kid," Jones said. "It was made a little easier once I decided to stay in the Midwest."
The state’s No. 1 prospect hasn’t gotten around to narrowing down to a list of his 10 favorite colleges just yet.
UGA fans can relax, though, because Lorenzo Carter has already said that the Bulldogs, along with Alabama, will definitely be among his finalists.
After touring five of the country’s top football programs this month, the 5-star defensive end from Norcross High School has indicated another school will secure a spot – the Florida Gators.
The 6-foot-5, 240-pound Carter toured both Florida and Florida State a couple of weeks ago.
