Good for us embarrassing for the the rest of the B1G.. I"m one hoping for the rest of the league to step up their efforts in recruiting, as it's vital going in to that 4 teams playoff system..
Pardon my complete ignorance, but is there a hierarchy of camps listed someplace that indicates which recruits are the most desirable? Is The Opening the best one? What's the difference between it and other camps? Elite 11 for example?
The Elite 11 is for QBs only, whereas The Opening is for all positions, with the exception of special teams I believe. The Opening, hosted by Nike, is considered the most prestigious high school combine/camp.
The Opening is a pretty big deal, they only invite the top 150 performers from the Nike camps.
Though sometimes I do feel that they invite guys based on name recognition/ranking over camp performance at times. It does make for a more dramatic final event though
Be interesting to see how Collier fits in. None of the recruiting sites give him much credit, yet he was invited to The Opening and got a schollie to tOSU.
As far as camp prestige goes, NIKE gives out lots of cool swag to the kids. Everyone love free shit, especially NIKE free shit.
"all men are created equal, it's just that some are MORE equal than others"
Buck-I.8, used to feel the same way but it does seem like the Nike people really make an effort to reward kids based on their camp performances rather than stars, while I feel the opposite about the Rivals headline camp which does seem to value ranking over performance. That's not to say the rivals camp doesn't have a ton of talent, because it does, but the roster seems to be a bit more star heavy.
Just looking at the Ohio State commits attending in the last two years shows a bunch of kids who got invited over higher ranked kids. In 2012 we had Elliot, J. Thompson, and Tyquan Lewis attend, while we had others there as well, those three were not in the "top 200" when they first got invited. This year Trout, McLaurin, Collier, D. Thompson, all seem to have earned their way there with their camp performances rather than star ranking.
On a different note, the opening does put added emphasis on Sparq rating, which I find pretty encouraging that the OSU staff has been in on so many guys the last two classes who aren't ranked as high but are still getting invited based on their performance in quantifiable tests and through live in person competition at the regional camps.
Rivals 5-Star Challenge is a pretty big deal, too, but obviously not as hyped as a Nike event. I believe they had 104 attendees this year.
Those who stay will be CHAMPIONS!
Urban knows what he is doing people this class is looking like it'll be stellar if we get a few key guys
stark county football
Wonder who will be this year's Mike Mitchell and blow up at The Opening
I doubt anyone will come close to those numbers those were freakish numbers that you see once every 5-10 year's
What are the 8 commits going?
The 8 right now are:
Parris Campbell Jr.
When Terry McLaurin commits by Monday at the latest, that will make 9 out of 13 OSU commits going to "the opening". Pretty darn impressive. Hopefully those commits can get in some ears out there in Oregon and sway some top prospects into checking out OSU even with the class looking tight on space. I expect the Buckeye commits to show well at the opening.
amazing that some of the aforementioned prospects arent considered "elite" by recruiting services...goes to show how uncertain those sites are and how spot on coaching staffs are on kids
I happily put my trust in Urban & Co for the evaluation process. His goal is to have the best damn Buckeye Football Teams he can, while the recruiting sites and their "stars" have varied agendas.
At this pace, there might be a team of buckeyes vs a team of buckeyes! They will all be playing against each other.
I saw a UFO once.......it told me to have a goodyear!
I wish they took current commitments into consideration and made teams with as many commits from one team so they could see how they mesh.
wouldn't it be awesome if they did that! I would love to see teams of recruits from the same schools playing together plus right there would be the push to have recruits commit even earlier than they do now!
I would love to see Collier run an offense with Campbell, McLaurin. Fun!

I can't stop watching this!
Someone tell them to work on Samuel, Knox, McMillian, and Carter.
"YOLO" = I'm about to do something extremely ignorant/stupid & I need an excuse to do it.
A little tidbit of information. I heard Stephen Collier and Drew Barker were Pee Wee football team mates in N Kentucky when they were young.
I posted this in today's grey box but it's worth posting again:
RE: Buckeyes at The Opening
They can not only do the O-H-I-O but also spell out STATE.
Not to mention O-State targets: Lorenzo Carter, Meechy, McMillan, Mixon, Austin Roberts, Curtis Samuel, Artavis Scott, JuJu, Trevion Thompson, Quincy Wilson.
It really wouldn't be a surprise if by NSD we have 10-15 kids who were invited to The Opening.
15, wow. That would be 10% of campers.
Really impressive. I remember reading some Florida Gator banter, they were saying that Urban was notorious for going after the guys with high star rankings. But I think we are seeing that he gets in on some guys way before they blow up too. I expect Collier to be challenging for time behind center, Terry is a burner, EzE wasn't highly ranked when he committed to the good guys.
Barring catastrophe, I'd fully expect to see Collier and McLaurin as consensus 4* guys by NSD.
