Ok so I have been debating writing something up about the East Texas area as far as football is concerned. I have to say that I am no writer so please bear with my poor grammar skills. It was not my best subject in school.
More specifically I was wanting to write something about the East Texas area as far as football recruits go. I had worked for the Gilmer ISD school district as an assistant network administrator and also helped out with the football team as well as helped out with coaching for the high school baseball and junior high girls basketball teams for Harmony ISD where my daughter currently plays for the high school basketball team. I had a house built in a very little town called Big Sandy where Lovie Smith was a star running back and they won the Texas State 2a State Championship back in the 70's I believe it was? So I am very familiar with the local football teams in the area. Gilmer ISD is a 3A school that has won 3 or 4 state championships in football in the last 10 years and sports alumni such as, G.J. Kinne who played for Texas but later transferred to Tulsa. G.J.'s dad was in national news when he was the head coach for the Canton Texas Eagles and a disgruntled parent went into the coach's office and shot Gary Joe Kinne! The man went to jail and the family of the man threatened G.J. with his life so G.J. had to transfer to Gilmer ISD where we had to keep round the clock security for G.J.'s safety. It caused a huge scandal because Gilmer was already nationally ranked in football and local schools accused them of cheating to get G.J. to go to Gilmer. It was huge mess. I mean this kid just wanted to play football and he's a really good kid and the guy who's family had shot him was threatening this boy. I'm sorry I'm off on a little bit of a tangent but here's part of the E60 interview http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G00JeOgvyEg
I wish Ohio State would take a look at Josh Walker a LB for Gilmer that just made it to the Army All-American Bowl
If it appears that I'm promoting Gilmer ISD, then thats because I am! Emanuel Johnson who played quarterback for the Gilmer Buckeyes and went on to play for Oklahoma and then the Dallas Cowboys, Curtis Brown was a wide receiver who went on top play cornerback for Texas and is now is playing for the Pittsburg Steelers, David Snow who now plays for the Buffalo Bills. Yeah in and year out, Gilmer fields a very good football team. I can post some links to their school as well as surrounding area's but sense I mostly dealt with Harmony and Gilmer, most of the information I have is pertaining to these two schools! Harmony is a 2a school that really is known for their baseball and not so much football. However they do have some very good baseball teams. Anyway, this is a couple links regarding the Gilmer Buckeyes as well as other area football schools. In East Texas they really do shut down entire towns for football on Friday night! There really isn't much of an Ohio State prescience in the area which is a shame because of obvious talent! Hopefully one day the coach's at Ohio State will catch wind of the talent in the area because I know there are quite a few kids that would be honored to play football for Ohio State and would do very well in the B1G conference!
Palestine is home of Adrian Peterson who Gilmer played one year and actually beat. I had the privilege of watching Peterson play and I can honestly tell you that he was even better in high school! The kid looked like Michael Jordan on the football field! It just happened that the year they played Gilmer, Gilmer won the state championship and had some amazing talent.
The Shreveport area is also considered part of East Texas.
Some of the surrounding schools such as John Tyler, and Tyler Lee produced guys like Matt Flynn, Brandon Pettigrew, TE, Lions, Marcus Jackson WR-Falcons Johnny Manziel was originally from Tyler Texas..
The Longview Lobos produced the likes of Chris Ivory (RB-Saints), Trent Williams (OL-Redskins), Robert Henson (LB-Redskins), Malcolm Kelly (WR-Redskins)
Even the Ohio State Buckeyes own Rickey Dudley is from Henderson and Dontre Wilson is from East Texas as well! In fact several of Ohio States past recruits are from the Dallas area but rarely does Ohio State go into the farther North East parts for Texas but as you can see, there have been several D1 recruits in the area! It's my hope that one day Ohio State will take notice of these small town schools where a lot of the top recruits in the country come from! Again, I'm how poorly this was written but I hope that it might help some of you fans take notice of the talent in this region of the United States! Thanks for your time!
