Get caught up with Reid Worstell, Qadree Ollison and all the other news from another eventful Monday in Ohio State recruiting.
Over the last few days, we have brought you many spring game visit updates from some talented recruits; today is no different. I had the opportunity to catch up with 2013 Buckeye preferred walk-on commit Reid Worstell. The Canton Glen Oak quarterback, who picked OSU over Akron and walk-on opportunities at Penn State and Michigan, really liked watching his future teammates in action "It was great to be around the team during a game like atmosphere," Worstell stated. You can see what Reid brings to the table in these highlights.
After his weekend visit to the Spring Game 2014 Gary, Indiana baller Lonnie Johnson told multiple media outlets that the Buckeyes are his top team. The 6-3 190 pounder could play either wide receiver or defensive back at the college level has Ohio State leading over programs such as Cincinnati, Illinois, Kentucky and Purdue to name a few. Last season the talented Johnson put up 31 catches for 777 yards and 13 touchdowns on offense while also having 29 tackles and 6 interceptions on defense. Even though Ohio State might lead for his services, many scouts feel that Johnson has some work to do in the classroom before Urban Meyer and staff take his commitment.
Some recruiting days are just too big for one recap. We check in with a pair of top recruits, plus highlight the best of the rest on the first full day of recruiting post-quiet period.
With the NCAA's quiet period ending Monday, cell phones were blowing up en masse accordingly all day Monday for the elite recruits across the country. While staffs like Ohio State's elite group of recruiters are limited to just one call per recruit per day, you can bet the targets they're trying to keep interested will be hearing from them in the days to come.
One such player Ohio State's recruiting early and often is 2015 RB Jacques Patrick. We caught up with Jacques on Monday after he got the call from Ohio State (and head coach Urban Meyer in particular). "He told me I could play as a true freshman and they're gonna recruit me really hard and how I can be the next Eddie George for them," Patrick told Land-Grant Holy Land. With a summer visit to Ohio State likely in the cards for the high ceilinged, must watch prospect, you have to thing the Buckeyes will continue the full court press on the highly touted back.
Is Versatile 4-Star Lonnie Johnson a Lock to Ohio State? (bleacher report)
4-star recruit Lonnie Johnson appears like he could be close to becoming an Ohio State lean, but don't consider him a lock to the Buckeyes just yet.
For all intents and purposes, though, it sure looks like Johnson is strongly considering Ohio State. Brad Bournival of ESPN.com reports the latest:
The 6-foot-2, 180-pound Johnson tweeted that he saw everything from Ohio State that he needed to see.
“They showed me a lot,” said Johnson, who picked up an Ohio State offer in December. “I really needed to see if they passed the ball a lot. They showed me that they did, so that made them jump really high on my list. They passed the ball a lot, so that made them a favorite.”
That the Buckeyes are one of his favorites is good news for fans. They appeared to be a leader when they originally offered Johnson, but he saw his recruitment take off as Bowling Green, Illinois, Kentucky, Nebraska, Notre Dame and Purdue came calling.
Here's the Tweet from Johnson that Bournival is referencing:
I've been speaking to Coach Warinner and Coach Meyer a lot, Coach Warinner is coming to see me on Friday. We just talk about how things are, Ohio State, and how I can make a big impact there. I plan on visiting in May.
Coach Warinner, the offensive line coach, sends me Facebook messages almost everyday. This week he has just said keep working hard and we are thinking about you at OSU.
I talk to Coach Meyer and Coach Warinner everyday but Coach Warinner said he's coming to see me Thursday. I'll be the first recruit he sees, he said he will be here all day so I'm excited to spend a lot of time with him. I'll be visiting in early June because that's when Coach Meyer will be there. Coach will be traveling a lot in May, so he doesn't want me coming down when he's not there.
