As we all know, Ohio State now has 7 commitments in the 2014 class so far. I'm interested to hear what everybody thinks about the start to our class and how it compares to expectations. On a scale of 1 to 10, I would say that I am at a 7 in satisfaction at this point in time. The one thing about this post though is that it's still incredibly early in the cycle and who knows how some of the guys in our class will improve and perform in camps.
I would put my satisfaction at about a 7 (possibly 7&1/2) for a multitude of reasons. It hasn't exactly been the most glorious start but IMO we've secured some much needed early commitments at positions of need. I think all of our recruits with the exception of Damon Webb and Kyle Trout are the type of guys that aren't necessarily top ranked recruits nationally but all are guys that have huge upside. The potential in some of these guys is off the charts, and that is exciting going forward. The fact that we've already secured 2 LB's (Berger & Hubbard) and 2 OLineman (Jones & Trout) is very important because I think it will allow the staff to get a little bit more aggressive with the highly touted prospects because the foundation at both positions of need is set for this class. Now for the reasons that I didn't put my satisfaction at a 9 or 10. I honestly think it's safe to say that I'm not at a 9 or 10 because I was spoiled by our class last year. At this point in time last year, we had higher touted guys in the class (guys like Burrows, Marshall, Baugh, Price, soon to be Bosa, etc.). When you are spoiled with a start to a class that has that kind of fire power, I would be lying if this years start wasn't just a bit disappointing. I am definitely a perfectionist and it pains me to go on ESPN or Rivals right now and look at our 2014 class. On Rivals rankings, Last years class had only 6 commitments that were rated at a 3 star. This year on Rivals we already have 4 commitments that are 3 stars. That is 4 out of 7 compared to 6 out of 24 last year! Then don't even get me started with ESPN. Heck even Wilton Speight, Michigan's QB commit who isn't highly regarded by any sites except ESPN, is on the ESPN "Watch List". That is frustrating for me because out of our 7 commitments, only 2 of them are considered ESPN "Watch List" players (Damon Webb, Kyle Trout). In other words, ESPN only considers 2 out of 7 of our commitments to be top 300 caliber players. I do want to make it clear though, I really don't care all that much about rankings because I understand that rankings don't mean very much at all when these players actually hit campus. It only bothers me because the ego-maniac in me takes a little bit of a hit seeing us have 2 of 7 Watch Listers while Michigan has 4 of 4, Florida has 7 of 9, etc. I am just keeping in mind that rankings change and I would be shocked if most of our guys didn't get a bump when the rankings are updated. Overall though, I am still very happy with the start to our class and I think it's a very solid start. If the biggest thing holding me back from pure excitement is some stupid website rankings and the fact that last year we had higher ranked players committed, then I can live with that. That just goes to show how purely awesome the 2013 recruiting class really was.
Now, I'm curious to hear what others have to say about their thoughts on the start to our 2014 class!
