Ohio State recruiting: State Secrets, 3/18 - Truly March Madness (lghl)

Ohio State basketball made it as a number two seed in the West Region, which will only help both coaching staffs, football and basketball, when it comes to the recruiting front.
Throughout the course of the Big Ten Tournament, which began on Thursday and ended Sunday, head coach Urban Meyer and his coaching staff were keeping busy, continuing to pursue athletes across the country. With spring practice still going on, and as we near the 2013 version of Ohio State's spring game, more visits will be taking place in and around Columbus.
Speaking of visiting, '14 RB Joe Mixon released his top 15 favorite schools on Friday, a list that Ohio State made the cut in. The other schools that Mixon has cut down to are: California, Georgia, Oklahoma, Texas A&M, UCLA, Washington, Arizona State, Notre Dame, Oregon State, Wisconsin, Michigan, Arkansas, Clemson, Tennessee and USC. Mixon also has told the media he will visit Ohio State for sure, which is good news for the Buckeyes.
The 6'2", 195-pounder rushed for 1,443 yards on 201 attempts last year, scoring 20 times on the ground. Mixon also caught 18 passes for 383 yards and 6 touchdowns. If that wasn't enough, he also played both ways, garnering 23 tackles, one sack and two interceptions. He was simply all over the field throughout the entire season.

Chad Mavety, '14 4-star JUCO OL, talks Ohio State offer, future visits w/LGHL (lghl)

The 2013 recruiting class was a successful on every level, but coach Meyer made it clear he was disappointed at the lack of offensive linemen signed. The Buckeyes are trying harder to land the best linemen in the country in '14.
After making it clear to the media that coach Meyer and his staff weren't entirely pleased with how they recruited offensive linemen, Ohio State has made signing that particular position a focus point in the class of 2014. It started off quickly, with '14 OL commit Marcelys Jones and '14 OL commit Kyle Trout giving their verbal pledge to the Buckeyes and since then, coach Meyer hasn't taken his foot off of the gas.
While looking for new talent, there's no harm in taking a JUCO route, which is exactly what the staff may have in mind with '14 JUCO OL Chad Mavety. Ohio State offered Mavety recently, February 1st, and has since been in constant contact with the star lineman. Checking in at 6'6", 320-pounds, Mavety is rated a 4-star and the second best player in the country for the JUCO level. Mavety also holds an offer from perennial power Alabama, including just about the rest of the country: Florida State, Michigan State, Miami, Oklahoma, West Virginia and many more. Most recently, Mavety received an offer from Rutgers (March 15th) and Connecticut (March 6th).
We spoke with Mavety, to catch up on his latest updates on where schools stand, and in particular, what his interest level is with the Buckeyes:

Good to see with Damon Webb. I Really like that kid for the obvious reasons
I hope it is a sticky Webb so he can help snag a couple of these guys

Braden Smith is a MAN!
"You win with people." - Woody Hayes
+1 A grown ass man!
He is REALLY quick for being that big. Probably the best Guard in this class.
"if irony were made of strawberries, we' d all be drinking a lot of smoothies right now."
After reading the LGHL article and checking out highlights of 2014 QB Zach Darlington I really like this kid's highlight tape. It says in the article that he believes the staff is close to offering. I had never even heard his name up until this point. Alex or the staff is there any merit to what Darlington is saying?
Braden Smith. I want.
Braden Smith must be on Spring Break this week. From his profile on 247, looks like he's visiting OSU today, UM on Wednesday, and Notre Dame on Friday.
I would agree. He is scheduled to be in Ann Arbor, as mentioned.

Yes he is on spring break....he's just doing the same thing he has done at the other schools h has visited.
Braden Smith is a weight room freak, that's for sure. Obviously any one of our schools would love to have him. For those of you who read 247, there was an analyst who checked him out this past season and couldn't be more negative about his performance if he tried. The analyst said Braden Smith was as physically impressive as any high schooler he's seen, but was getting beat all game. That said, there have been good reports on him from camps, so the jury is still out IMO.
Just want to throw it out there that he may not be the 5* people are holding him to. A very good recruit nonetheless, but I just wanted to provide the alternate perspective on a recruit who appears too good to be true. Good luck in his recruitment btw. While, as a rival fan, it's nice to see you guys miss on some OL targets, it's the one position I don't mind who we land in the 2014 class and I'm more in favor of helping the B1G's talent overall than hating on my rivals.
While I wouldn't mind seeing you guys land Braden Smith, I hope you guys wouldn't mind us landing Da'Shawn Hand :)
He does have a lot of work to do on the field before becoming a great player at the next level. You can clearly see that when watching the short videos from camps. His short wingspan is a big knock.

Love hearing the news about Jayru! Hopefully Damon can work some magic for us

Find it kind of funny that the one commit who wants to actually come out and say he will be recruiting for the Buckeyes hard... is from Michigan.
Heard a few things on twitter recently:
*Kyle Berger plans visit OSU once again in the next week or two
*Jabrill Peppers top 3 is still: 1. Stanford, 2. OSU, 3. Michigan -- has plans to visit all three (and his 4. LSU) in the month of April iirc
*Heard Demarre Kitt plans to visit OSU again April 4-7th
*Elijah Hood is reconsidering his top 5 (it's ESPN insider info, so can't speak to how he's planning to change it; last I heard it was 1. ND 2. UNC 3.Michigan 4.OSU 5.Can't remember, but if he's reconsidering it those schools & their order could change)
^Apologize if any are Quick Bits repeats, just thought any casual readers who hadn't heard the following info would be curious
read that hood talked with his family and wants to be closer to home. won't completely drop northern schools, but will give preference to southern ones. i think this loss is biggest for ND, as he had been showing them a lot of love. he went to several schools after his notre dame visit (i believe) and still had them #1. don't think michigan or ohio state really had a great chance at landing him. just funny how he'd narrowed things down to a top 3 of ND, michigan, and osu, only to do a complete 180 and basically back off from all 3
Ahhh nice, thanks! Can't say I'm displeased by that (unless he ends up in SEC country). I didn't think he was going to end up at OSU anyway, so one less RB at ND or Michigan doesn't bother me a bit. If Hood ended up at UNC (and not ND/UM) and Hand ended up at VaTech (and not UM/Bama/FLA) I'd consider it a victory for the Buckeyes lol.
i could see unc grabbing him if they have a strong season. they shot up his list when he visited, and they're in his home state. will be interesting to see when he comes out with a new top list, who besides unc makes the cut
I don't think Michigan or OSU were strong players, anyway, with Hood, despite being in his top group. I think he is UNC bound.
Since you mentioned Hand, apparently he has changed/considering changing his program of study to Sports Management. Michigan is set with any of the three he's mentioned (Civil Engineering, Sports Management, or business), but if he turns to Sports Management, that could make Florida a bigger player (perhaps even replace VaTech).

Updated
It's weird and strange that Zach Darlington himself said that OSU is close to offering. I've never heard of the kid, and I'm curious to know what's really going on with the likes of Barker, Henderson and even Kyle Allen. I really don't understand why we're not offering one of these kids. Barker would be the biggest recruiter if he was on board. I have a feeling he's either go to South Carolina or Tennessee.
Any visit reaction from Braden Smith?
