Quarterbacks

As we all know the staff has been pretty picky about giving out offers to quarterbacks in this class, as Deshaun Watson is currently the only one really offered. However, the staff has already offered two 2015 qb prospects. Is that saying something about the talent in the next class compared to 2014, or does it have more to do with them zeroing in on Watson? Obviously we don't know all of the info, but I remember reading back in like December that the staff was going to be watching prospects' film and probably hand out an offer or two after, but now it seems that isn't exactly the case. Could another reason be that they want to watch the kids throw in person? Any information or opinions would be welcome!

I think they really like Watson and like their chances with him and they are holding back other offers until they feel otherwise.

Do you really feel you are koalafied to give such an opinion?

That was so cheesy it deserves an upvote.

What the Koala said. Plus I would imagine that most of the 2015 offers are non-committable and they just want to put in some ground work to start building a relationship.

Interesting question. I would not be shocked if staff is not panicked about taking a QB in 2014 since Brax will be a senior and we will have some legit backups able to step in after he leaves.

If we whiff on Watson in 2014, no doubt they will push hard for a top signal caller for 2015. That may be the thinking behind offering two 2015 QBs so early.

With JT Barrett most likely redshirting this year, he will be the 2014 QB. Urban and Co. can push to get Watson because they have nothing to worry about this year if they missed.

not to mention I think if they do miss on Watson, they will get another QB anyways. I can see Caleb Henderson, Deshone Kizer and a few others either waiting to go to OSU or decommitting if Urban comes a calling.

I'd like Will Ulmer to be a guy they get if they miss on Watson.

steensn's picture

I think they like their chances with Watson and feel they can get one of 4-5 "second tier guys" if the flop on Watson. They also gotta think jones or Barrett are sufficient to fill a role for a year if they don't work out and they need a 2015 kid. I'm not confident on that one myself...

Curious about why you're not confident in Barrett or Jones.  Barrett will be coming off surgery yes, but he should be pretty much full go by the fall, and will have had 3? springs to figure out the playbook, and Jones will have been in the system even longer.  Barrett plays like Miller (not saying he's Miller of course), and will have more experience than Brax had when he started.

steensn's picture

Jones has had some bumps so far and Barrett has had a major injury and surgery. They've certainly given reason to doubt them, more times than not guys don't come back from injury and guys who feel like transferring can't overcome. Hope they do, but it doesn't paint a rosey picture by any means.

I disagree about the Barrett injury only because more and more kids are coming back from those types of injuries on the regular.  Of course it may not work out but I'm more optimistic than I would have been 15 years ago.

OSU will get someone, just may not be a dynamic athlete at the QB position

steensn's picture
steensn on 17 Mar 2013 - 3:07pm #

I'd be ecstatic for Barrett to recover fully. I just don't have the most optimism post injury. Great thing is medicine is getting so much better that maybe I am tainted by years of lesser capability. I'd be happy if my confidence level was wrong on both fronts, but by anyone's opinion there is a case for concern, no matter ,how little.

I'm completely confident that he will be able to recover. It is not like a Derrick Rose situation where he will be pressured to return before he is ready either, as he will have a full year at least with Braxton still in the program and almost certainly another one before he can even compete for the starting job. While he might not be quite as quick as he was before the injury, he will be fully healed by that point, and the coaches have already praised his leadership abilities. Not being able to run for his first year on campus could actually help him become a pass first quarterback that gets the ball into the play makers hands, with the read option only used to keep defenses honest.

It's ACL surgery. 99% of people come back fully after doing their ACL in this day and age if they put in even a modicum of work.

This might be a better question..has the staff made any indication of who they might have as number 2 on the board? Or has any other qb recruit said that Ohio state was pursuing them the hardest?

Set your avi
Ludwig Yards on 17 Mar 2013 - 8:38am #

I don't read everything but I haven't heard any indication of who the coaches have at #2, if they have anyone in a pecking order yet. I know there was some belief that Barker was #2 but I'm not sure if that was just based on the fact that his name was on some whiteboard in that All Access show.

It's my opinion that Watson is the only QB they are sure about and until they either get the stiff arm from Watson, and/or or see/learn something more from someone else on the board that we won't see any offers until maybe summer. And as someone else stated above, QB may not be as high of a priority to the staff as it is to some fans. So, they may have no problem waiting on someone until later in the process.

I think with the reduced scholarships for one more year the staff is being cautious on every single player they take this year.  With that, I think they want to either take the best QB they can get, or take another top tier player at a different position to fill that need for the following year. I also think they are ok with how the back-ups are looking and are willing to wait until 2015 before they feel the need to get another QB, and either see them as better, ore a better time to take a project.

IMO Drew Barker should be QB we are after. His offer list is only getting better   Right now it is South Carolina or UK but if tOSU wanted him I would think they would join the other 2 and possibly become his favorite.

I think they have offered guys in 2015 already because they don't want to be in a position where they are with the quarterbacks they like in 2014.

They are behind with quarterbacks in 2014 because they got a late start to establish relationships in comparison to other schools.

They had to expend a lot of resources and time to finish off the 2012 class and catch up with 2013 kids to enable a #1 class.

They have been playing catch up since kids decide earlier and earlier now. Watson and other QB's in 2014 have been committed for over a year already.

Heck, a 2015 QB is already committed to Florida State in DeAndre Johnson, and he's a stud as well.

Thanks Derek...sounds like we should all remain patient in regards to the 2014 class QB situation.  It's a marathon...not a sprint.  Worry about the QB situation after the season. If there isn't one solid verbal by then, I'd say may be worry at that point.  However...I'm not even going to then...Brax360 will be back for his Sr season at least at this point he is.  Viable back ups with JT and Jones...I'm good with them...add Barker, Watson, or may be Kizer...I'll be happy with or without them.

Edit* Check this kid out.  A buddy that frequents the paid sites just sent me this.  Thought I'd share.  Darius Wade from PA.  Lefty who's pretty darn good and definitely under the radar at the moment.

I like his skills just have to tighten that delivery up(common problem with lefty's) and he will be outstanding. Really has some zip on some of those passes.

Also Zach Darlington is reporting heavy interest from the staff and feels they are close to offering. Came out of left field considering I had never heard of the kid, but I really like his game as well.

Is Urban looking at who we (Nebraska) has offered as Dual Threat QBs and asking for their film? lol. I kid. But in all seriousness I expect we will see OSU and Nebraska going after some of the same QBs as both programs want a Dual QB from what I have seen....could be wrong.

The QB mentioned a couple of posts above isn't from PA. We offered him last week.

If OSU does not land Barker, let's hope we never face him.  He will grow to handle any defense  he faces....including OSU.  Looking at his highlights...man he is accurate, can make yardage on the ground, and makes it look easy.  A true dual threat.  Once again...this is based an his highlight. We need Barker.

Oh I hear you and no, not everyone is perfect. However, I would leave it up to the experts. i.e. the guy running the show with 2 undefeated seasons and 2 national championships. I keep hearing people are so high on him for his athletic ability and the fact he is a great leader. Well that's great when you're the best player on the field in a low talent laden football state. What happens when he can't crack the line up? Hard to be a great leader sitting on the bench. Ask Tim Tebow. I am not saying the kid won't be a fantastic college football player but you can't catch every fish in the ocean either.

Plus on the other side of it I think people are under estimating the effect of the Barrett red shirt. There is your 2014 qb technically.  So offer the kid you think is can't miss (Watson) and if he doesn't take then oh well your have a red shirt freshman with a year under his belt already. If OSU doesn't land Barker it's not a program breaker.

^^^couldn't agree more.. QB is deffinately not a must in the 2014 class.. But, then you gotta think what if barrett just isn't the same QB and doesn't fully recover, what is plan B? You should always have a good back up plan..

Dear 11w folk,

Look, this is Urban Meyer.  The actual Urban Meyer.  I have been hiding behind this moniker for a couple years now and lurking around Buckeye fan sites.  I am in love with DeShaun Watson.  Mostly in a platonic sense but sometimes I wonder.  If my love fest with Watson remains unfulfilled, I am going to offer Will Ulmer.  If you need any more insider info just ask.

You're welcome,

  Urban
