Myles Autry committing tomorrow??

Not good news at all. Autry is wanting to commit on his birthday (tomorrow). His picture on twitter is him in a Tennessee uniform. Not good after we just lost out on Jalen Hurd.

Added Raekwon McMillan tweet.  Autry then goes on to say "oh yeah that's the move you already know."  Meyer needs to get these guys in for visits sooner!!!

I'm not sure where Autry will commit, but he named Ohio State his leader on December 28, 2012 and was supposed to visit in February (if not earlier).  I don't know exactly why his visit was delayed but it may have been due to his torn ACL and having to rehab it.

Oh let's lose Kitt to Tennessee too? I don't really care if he named Ohio State as his leader in December. That's so irrelevant now. Same thing happened with Hurd. That's rare to commit without a visit. Marcus Baugh was the one? Tennessee would be off to a fantastic start and who wouldn't want to go there? Todd Kelly Jr, Jalen Hurd, and then Myles Autry?? No doubt in my mind they would steal a lot more of our targets. If they grab Kitt too, we're going to have to completely change our top targets because everyone will follow.

As of right now he is still scheduled to visit Ohio State in early April.  He was asking Raekwon about it yesterday.  He may commit to Tennessee tomorrow and not visit Ohio State, but as of right now: he is supposed to visit 10 months before signing day, was supposed to visit a year before signing day and named Ohio State his leader a year before signing day.  I'm just not sure what else Urban was supposed to do.  Is there more up to this point you think he could of done, especially knowing that Autry likely delayed his visit due to an injury?  Rarely do classes fill out with most of their top targets from about a year (or more) before signing day...

It's hard reading what's going through these recruits' minds. Maybe when he saw Hurd commit, he wanted to come here.  But.. I do feel that if Ohio State was the school he wanted to commit to, he would know when he was going to visit. He wouldn't have to ask another recruit you know? Just my opinion though

Y'all are going crazy with this recruiting stuff haha. I do enjoy it too but man it has been taken to a whole nother level these days. But for what its worth, (as I see it anyways) Look at the dates they are talking about. Unless they have a spring break coming up at the same time they ain't coming on a Monday(a day for fools). They're having a great ol time laughing at everyone right now and everyone eats it right up.

This is exactly why McMillan needs to commit early and push kids to OSU.  He can't recruit for OSU if he isn't committed there.

P.S.  This is a strong start for UT, but I believe some kids rethink their commitment after a .500 season for UT.  They might even be below .500.

I just went on the tweeter & looked at McMillans tweets...seems like he's pretty much fully backing OSU. Would be great if he just did commit. Be nice to have a leader from down south to help with that area. As for Autry, seems like he's committing to UT, but does have some positive stuff about OSU on there...

When a top rated player in the country commits to the home state school that other top state prospects are a little cautions on committing to can lead to the recruits committing to the same school. College football has been that way before I was even born and will be when I am dead. Just the way it works.

If he commits to TN then I wish him the best. I would rather see them going to TN than Alabama - sorry, just tired of "every" elite recruit throwing Alabama at the top the second they get offered.

I don't want to get off of the subject, but does anyone know what Jones is selling potential recruits? I may be mistaken, but it seems to me that UT represents naught but a faint opportunity of some distant transitory success while Ohio State is expected to dominate for the foreseeable future. If a recruit's ultimate goal is to attain success in the NFL, it would seem to me that OSU presents a much better prospect.

Well for Hurd it is a chance to rebuild his favorite program.  Would you not want to do the same if OSU had a couple down years and you were a stud high schooler?  And once you get one or two studs it makes it easier to sell it to others, see Ole Miss.

BEREABUCKEYE's picture
BEREABUCKEYE on 17 Mar 2013 - 10:40am #

I would think that a player who places a much higher priority on getting to the nfl than on college championships would want to go to a school where there's a better chance for early playing time. UT would probably provide that better than OSU at this time. If he wants to win college championships, he would not go to UT and probably choose one of a handful of schools including OSU or Alabama.

lljjgg's picture
lljjgg on 17 Mar 2013 - 5:51pm #

I think it has much less to do with Tennessee, and more to do with building hype. Ole Miss is a very fine school, but you'd have to do a lot of work to make me understand why they have a GREATER appeal than Michigan to Treadwell, or a GREATER appeal to Laremy Tunsil than FSU/Alabama. To me it's not that TENN is a bad school, it's a perfectly good school, but what people are buying into is the hype of rebuilding a school with a history and a shallow depth-chart. These guys want to be the group that changes things -- which is great for them, and I wish them the best. As others have said, hey, at least it's not Alabama. But I think it's not really TENN-specific, it's that every year there's a new school with hype. 2013 was Ole Miss, 2012 you could argue it was Stanford (top 5-6 class most places), 2011 was Clemson, etc. There are a lot of programs that maintain temporary hype (about a month ago it seemed like every recruit was trending Clemson), we'll see if TENN can be one that maintains it. I get a sense that they won't. They'll likely end up with a nice top 10-15 2014 class before it's all said and done, but that's about as far as they go imo.

I still think 8-4 is about the best he'll be able to do at Tennessee though. I just don't exactly see Tennessee taking the nation by storm with a guy like Butch Jones. I think he'll make them solid and at least somewhat competitive in the SEC but that's all IMO.

Buckabroad's picture
Buckabroad on 17 Mar 2013 - 10:44am #

Hi all,

thanks for the insight which does make sense to me. The only thing that bothers me with Hurd is that he seemed a clear lean towards OSU. I may not have full information, but the commitment to UT seemed rash to me. I felt like I had been punched in the gut when I heard of it. Also, UT does have a resurgent program and fan base, but our fan base is even greater still (or am I a homer?) and while UT only has a chance of success, our 12-0 season and two straight top 5 recruiting classes prove we are having success right now. We are not in the SEC, but is it really so appealing for recruits to attend a school where they likely will be trounced every other weekend until they graduate? Or maybe I am looking at it inaccurately? Or maybe we can flip him?

"The minute we stop expecting greatness, we become Wisconsin."

rdubs's picture
rdubs on 17 Mar 2013 - 11:01am #

Well there was at least study that put OSU as having the biggest fanbase in the country.  Also if it was a rash decision then it is much likelier that he will flip.  However he is planning on enrolling early so there is a bit less time to get him to switch than there would be otherwise.

Poison nuts's picture
Poison nuts on 17 Mar 2013 - 11:39am #

All that success & great recruiting classes equate to tremendous depth at OSU. Some kids want a chance to shine early & a school like UT offers that. After the class we just got, don't be surprised to see some kids want to go where they can play right away. Plenty of kids will be concerned about the depth...

And it won't hurt OSU either. I said some kids will be intimidated by the competition, not that recruiting will suffer. I expect another great class this year, but the sell against OSU will be, "you'll have a tough time seeing the field" & some of them will buy it.

Re: What's Butch selling, don't let the past 10 years cloud the tradition that existed at Tennessee prior to the resurgence of the 'Bama dynasty. They are the 9th-winningest program in history and the 2nd-winningest in the SEC. Neyland stadium is the fourth-largest stadium south of the Mason-Dixon line, and the Vols have won six national championships, one fewer than the Buckeyes, with their most recent following the 1998 season.

Also, having great players like Peyton Manning and Reggie White in your alumni directory probably doesn't hurt any. Tennessee isn't Purdue, guys, it's a legit program with some history - it's just been through the mill thanks to nitwits like Kiffin and Dooley.

Agreed Andy, looks like they're all in to revive the program - I mean before Saban, Alabama was nothing to write home about either, though they still had all of what you said previously about Tennessee. All it takes is the right coaching staff & a few great recruiting classes to get them back into the swing of things.

They have to say stuff like that about them being in the SEC and blah blah bc they wouldn't be able to sleep at night otherwise. When your team can't even go 500 you become desperate lol. Tennessee fans are definitely desperate, which is why they are going bananas over a couple commitments and talking about rising to the top now all of a sudden. I'm just glad I'm not a Tennessee fan because they are in for more disappointment if they think they're going to be winning any championships any time soon. As I said above 8 to 9 wins is the best I can envision under Butch Jones. Now if they got a big time coach there then I'd say watch out. As it stands, they have a good coach but not somebody that will lead them to National Titles.

This tweet actually makes me very confident.  When McMillan saw Autry's tweet about committing, he had to shoot him a phone call because they've been talking about playing together.  So for McMillan to tweet that he's his future teammate the next day, makes me a little more confident.  Autry either must not be committing today or he's going to wait until early April when he takes his visit to Columbus with Raekwon.  Who knows, they may commit together and try to bring in the rest of Georgia.
