Webb? You mean Harris I know, but may want to edit that. It's gonna be between OSU & UM for this kid...hope it's the good guys, have a feeling Hoke has his little meat hooks in him.

Definitely would be huge to pull him in.  Not expecting much, but that way I either will be pleasantly surprised or not too disappointed.  I also really didn't consider him committed after he said he was reopening and only considering football.  I guess this really is just a sign that he is fairly unlikely to end up at MSU.

Bollman have a high profile WR run away from a program that he coaches at.....not a chance.  Everyone knows the NFL is a Run first league and run blocking WR's are at a premium.

It's ok though Spartan fans he makes up for chasing play makers away with his excellent ability of molding lineman ....into undraftable free agents.....with BMIs of 50.

I did hear he's a really nice guy and everyone really likes him.  (No sarcasm here)

Drake Harris is the #1 receiver  in the Midwest. Just a question: what other WRs are we recruiting hard from Ohio or the rest of the country? I'm assuming were done with slots as Lattimore would be a good fit there if not at DB. 2014 will probably be going after big or fast outside receiving threats.

I see this one if a long way from over. I don't see him giving another verbal til close to signing day, if not on signing day. I think all of the UM visits (while never good news for us) were in large part because on the short distance and the chance to see some high profile basketball games. I do think UM is a major player for his services but I also think alot of ground can be made up w a visit to OSU and some face time w/ Urban. I also got to assume Coach Coombs might start to frequent his school.

Last I heard, Harris plans on enrolling early.  Most think the wants to decide before the start of his football season, but it certainly won't be a signing day decision.

While I appreciate your optimism, it's going to take a full press from Urban and staff to turn Harris.  Unfortunately, Urban has a track record of making these types of pulls happen.  Personally, though, I'm fairly confident he chooses Michigan.  If you connect the dots over the last few weeks, it's hard to think otherwise.

Yeah.  Three unofficials to Michigan in the space of about 4-5 weeks.  I think the decommitment with Sparty is his goodbye there.  I do think that there is merit to the notion that all of his visits to Ann Arbor are a matter of convenience.  But it's not like Drake is going to Ann Arbor Pioneer and just has to walk across the street.  He's in a different part of the state.  It's a drive to get there.  So his thing with Michigan is serious.

Hail is right; as an early-enrollee, Harris likely won't be a national signing day drama baby.  It's now being said that Harris wants to decide soon -- this spring.

It also will not surprise me one bit if he talks to Meyer, and gives OSU a good listen.  But the confidence factor for a Michigan commitment in this case has gotten very high.  It's a position of need for Michigan.

I have no doubt UM has a "lead" if you will, given all of his recent visits. However, Im sure Harris will get the full press from the staff and all it takes is one great visit. I would also expect him to explore a few other schools, FL, Bama, and maybe a few more. His recruitment will be fun to keep and eye on and should truly be a battle, as both schools appear to want him very badly.

Here's a question for you Hail/other UM fans on here: Are you more confident in getting Harris than you were about getting Treadwell last year?  I too think Harris looks to be going to the bad guys with the recent developments, but aren't you worried the same thing could happen with Harris that happened with Treadwell? Just curious to hear what you guys think.

In recruiting...anything can happen for sure

hail2victors9's picture
hail2victors9 on 12 Mar 2013 - 10:54am #

I've learned not to get comfortable following recruiting.  Through the Spring and Summer, I think most every Michigan fan had written Treadwell into the class; myself included.  I don't think Treadwell is a bad kid or anything, but I do think he craved the attention. Once Michigan lost those high profile games, I think he lost interest and started shopping around.  He fell in love with [something at] Ole Miss.

Harris seems to be very different.  A lot quieter, a little more humble, perhaps.  Harris hasn't declared Michigan as his #1, but has simply said they're at the top.  Lot's of positives coming from his visits and reactions, but (and maybe this is because of Treadwell) I'm reserved in saying I'm extremely confident he ends up at Michigan.  I think he will, but I wouldn't guarantee it.  Harris will take his visits.  Gardner and Morris both told him to take all of his visits and he'll see that Michigan is the place for him.  Almost implies, to me, that he wanted to commit but they told him to look around first to be sure, then commit.  We shall see.

I agree with what everyone else is saying.  You never know what is going to happen next in recruiting, especially with all the decommitting these days.  A verbal commitment just doesn't mean what it used to, on either side of that commitment (yes, I'm looking at you Saban and Kiffin)

I think at this point, much like Treadwell's recruitment to this point, it is easy to feel that Harris's recruitment is going to lead to Michigan, or at least feels like the odds are in their favor.  The problem is, like any early leader, the longer it drags out, the less likely it feels.  Hail is right.  Many of us Michigan fans had written Treadwell off by late summer.  By the time he committed, it wasn't the least bit surprising he didn't pick Michigan, it was kind of expected.  Even with all that, he was still able to produce a WTF moment for Michigan fans because up until near the end, nobody ever really thought Ole Miss was a realistic option.  Go figure.

So with all that said, I feel good about Michigan's recruitment of Harris, but I'm not going to get attached just yet.   That also doesn't mean I will still feel that way an hour from now.  I still have to check the price of eggs in Denmark mostly because in this modern era of recruiting, it seems to be playing some sort of role, I just haven't figured it out yet.

Per 247, ND is the only one, but that's when he was looking to play basketball, too.  He is scheduled to visit Florida on 3/22 and just received an offer from FSU, so I wouldn't be shocked if he visited both.  Though he has received a lot of interest from the SEC, most think he stays in the Midwest.

He has not visited tOSU yet and has not had a chance to sit down with Meyer and the staff.  He plans on committing sometime in October, so the early part of the season could have an impact on him.  I want to refer everyone to Mr. Vonn Bell.  He took visit after visit to Alabama and most everyone said he was a lock through and through.  Then UFM goes to his title game, sits with his parents and all of the sudden he has three OV's scheduled, well we all know how that one turned out.  Meyer is an alpha dog recruiter and should never be counted out.  Harris lives close to UM so it is not hard to see why he would drive over there to see some great Bball games.  If he was driving hours to go visit a school it would be another story.  I have no doubt in my mind that Meyer will get him on campus and turn this into an even race before it is all over.  He is so far from a UM lock at this point, just like Bell.  These kids change there minds so often it is incredible.  Wait until Harris sees the offense in action this fall, he will understand where he fits in.  If he wants to play for Natyional titles, tOSU is in the best position to help him achieve that goal based off of recent history.  The staff is running a marathon not a sprint and they arent even on the second leg.  Things will begin to heat up as we move along, but the fact the Meyer and his crew have had more time to build relationships with these kids then previous classes allows them to slow down a bit.  I am not saying Harris will go here or there, but I think everyone needs to take a step back as it is only March.

I agree with you that Michigan is a convenient drive for him that allowed him to see some good basketball games the last couple weekends.  I think the most telling part of his visits is the fact that he had to drive by East Lansing and the school he was committed to while they also had some home games.  He didn't visit their campus once during that time despite driving by EL six times.  This fact, more than him visiting Michigan, seemed to make his decommitment just a matter of time.

I've felt for awhile that it was a matter of time before Harris decommitted. He's getting courted by the best teams in college football, while I definitely think he's interested in Michigan (and OSU, Florida, Alabama, etc), logically you have to think his family is telling him to take a step back and consider all of his opportunities. The Florida visit is a good example of that. The MSU commitment was about basketball, and his new choice is going to have to be about football.

Question for the masses (including the TSUN people): Has OSU cooled a little on Harris? It seemed like Urban was hard in pursuit around the time he opened up his recruitment and that interest was reciprocated but word has been very quiet on him in regards to OSU since (from both sides). When does he plan on visiting? Seems like it would be an easier trip than Florida (one that he does have scheduled)

hail2victors9's picture

No, Urban has not cooled on Harris.  Drake had a visit scheduled (two weekends ago, IIRC) but canceled because the staff was not going to be on campus.  He will visit within the next month, IMO, but nothing has been announced.

Harris clearly loves him some m****%@* and if he does choose them I wouldn't be upset I mean we are in on some pretty good receivers Dallis Todd,Blacknall,Thompson,Scott although I'm not sure how high Scott would be on our board with him being the slot type.

I have to give Hoke credit when it comes recruiting. He's doing very well in that regard. Not sure I'm all that impressed with his game coaching but the jury is definitely still out. We'll have to see what he does with his recruits to really judge him there. I'd take Urban any day over him though

Ahh Saturday's picture
Ahh Saturday on 12 Mar 2013 - 4:01pm #

I give Hoke credit as well, but he's also had a strange and beneficial start to his Michigan tenure.  Starting out during Tat-gate absolutely helped his recruiting and gave him a jump start. In his first year, Michigan played well enough to take advantage of a weak schedule and a few nice breaks and finish with a Sugar Bowl win.  That earned him enough good will to ride through last year's mediocre performance.  Imo, 2013 is critical for Hoke.  He's been recruiting smartly and successfully by reminding prospects of Michigan's past glory and his vision of their future glory.  2013 is the time for present glory, and if it looks more like '12 than '11, Hoke might find himself losing traction with recruits.

Which leads me to this question for Hail or any of our other Michigan visitors.  What is the minimum standard you have for a successful 2013?

10 wins and an appearance in the B1G Championship Game.  Can't lose more than two between ND, Nebraska, OSU and @MSU and @PSU (and win the rest, of course).

i think that's doable for michigan.  i don't think they'll have a problem with PSU (lost a few graduating linebackers and mcgloin) or MSU (no. weapons. whatsoever.  plus a few big losses on defense).

Nebraska could put up a fight, but i think had gardner played after robinson got hurt last year, they would have won.  mattison's defense held nebraska in check until almost the 4th quarter, by which time michigan's defense got 30 seconds of rest while bellomy threw a pick and ran back out onto the field.  they still held nebraska to season lows in many offensive categories, i believe.

ND is a similar game to Nebraska.  Michigan handed them the game and they still barely won.  They lose the heart of their run defense in Te'o, as well as a few offensive playmakers.  I think michigan wins in their second night game.

By november, michigan will also likely be playing strong enough on both sides of the ball to play osu close at home.  the days of 30 point blowouts are over, and those that still maintain urban will put up 70+ points on michigan should try looking at things without scarlet tinted glasses.

One game you could be overlooking, hail, is northwestern.  michigan was extremely lucky to beat them this year, but played good defense when it mattered.  northwestern with mark and colter back is a dangerous backfield.

shouldn't have trouble with anybody else (sorry iowa, minnesota, and anybody else irrelavent enough that i'm forgetting to name)

Harris is playing his cards well. I'd say we have a good shot at him, given his comments about Urban and meeting with Urban while committed to MSU. I still think Michigan is the front runner, but they should be at this point...

I so hope he commits to tTUN...then they have a season in which OSU beats them twice and whatever happens in the Bowl game happens.  Either way...win or lose in that bowl game...and Harris flips (all these kids want to play for the winners...even Derrick Green and DeVeon Smith would have been all OSU if they would have mutually recruited them due to lack of room for RBs).  I'm sure I'll get two or three DVs for this, but I know this will happen if OSU continues to beat them.  Just look at Conley from last year...it could very well happen again.  Way too early to get excited about where Harris is going.  Only 265 days till a nice visit up north;-)

I don't see Harris flipping, whatsoever.  I don't really even consider him decommitting from MSU a "flip."  He switched sports which is a legitimate reason and not a flip, in my eyes.  Anyway, I don't see it happening after following the kid for the last month.  He'll take the time and figure it out and then stay solid to that school.

You can't compare him to Conley.  Conley was a matter of not having an OSU offer for 3 or 4 months after he committed to Michigan.  He would never have committed to UofM had he received an offer from OSU sooner.  I think Michigan's W/L record had little, if anything, to do with his flip.

I think Harris's visit to Florida will be huge, because that's just the beginning of the wining and dining he's going to get from the SEC. Schools like UF, Bama and (maybe even A&M and Ole Miss, despite getting big name WRs last class) are going to put the full-court press on him. Treadwell couldn't resist it, maybe didn't want to. It's one thing to be in the Midwest and get the letters from SEC schools, but another to actually visit SEC country and resist it. I do think his personality is different than Treadwell and Foster's though, but that UF visit could be eye-opening to the point that it throws the door open to any and everyone.

I agree with this entirely. I do not think wins and losses for a team has a polarizing effect on recruits, unless a team with very high expectations finishes below .500, or vice-versa. For some recruits, it's certainly important. However, coaches for rebuilding programs (such as Michigan these past few years) sell the future as much as possible. They are able to tell these kids "look at the recruiting classes coming in before you and with you. This will be a nationally contending team by the time you're playing for our program." It's a smart tactic for teams that don't have the luxury of double-digit wins every year, and for the past 3 years it has worked wonders for Coach Hoke.

I was actually kidding about everything above....next time I'll put it in italics so everyone knows that I'm kidding.  Well, except the part about 264 days till TTUN game.

In all seriousness...I can see Harris ending up at tTUN.  I'm not so sure where he'll end up as of now due to what LLJJGG said about tSEC.  That could make a big difference where he ends up...tSEC is the sexy pick right now (TX A&M, Bama, FL and so on).

i think one big draw for michigan, besides being so close to home, is that he could be a starter there pretty much the second he got on campus.  not sure how many WR florida signed last year, but bama has amari cooper and robert foster, and a&m signed like 7 WR in the last class.  out of all the schools harris has shown interest in, his fastest route to playing time is undoubtedly michigan.  not sure how important that is for him.  some guys are content to redshirt, develop, and earn their time
