Ohio State recruiting: State Secrets, 2/22 - Two big visits scheduled (lghl)

Two visits scheduled for Ohio State, two recent Buckeye offers speak about their offer, and Drew Basil now handling two positions on the field? Might be 'two' much to handle in February 22nd's edition of State Secrets.

Recruiting analysts constantly debate different prospects' ever-changing interests in numerous schools, trying to disseminate between legitimate "interest" and feigned "interest." Few would argue against the premise that the most important tactic to recruit an athlete is to get him on campus. Fortunately for Buckeye fans, young or old, Coach Urban Meyer is bringing in stud after stud to Columbus and churning out stellar reviews of visits to Ohio's capital.

Yesterday, our very own Charles Doss caught up with Maurice Ways, a 2014 receiver from Franklin, Michigan (Detroit Country Day School). Doss was told that Ways plans on visiting Ohio State on March 30th. Currently, Ways does not have a star rating according to most of the recruiting websites, but holds offers from Bowling Green and Toledo and has garnered attention from Michigan, Michigan State, and Pittsburgh. It never hurts to get recruits on campus, no matter how high or low the recruiting rankings indicate of their ability. We'll see if the 6-3, 175-pound receiver blows up during the summer camp circuit and his senior season.

Bob Hunter commentary | Rumblings: Crimson Tide barge into Ohio for football recruits (dispatch)

Marcelys Jones couldn’t wait to tweet this week that Alabama had offered him a scholarship. The same went for Marshon Lattimore, and both let the world know that their teammate Erick Smith had been offered, as well. The news wasn’t that Alabama had made offers to three more football prospects; it was that all play for Cleveland Glenville, a talent pipeline to Ohio State for more than a decade. Jones, an offensive lineman, was the first player to commit to the Ohio State 2014 recruiting class on Dec. 25. Lattimore, an all-purpose athlete, and Smith, a safety, hold offers from the Buckeyes.

It’s not the first time Alabama coach Nick Saban has stepped into Ohio State territory — the Tide signed linebacker Trey DePriest out of Springfield two years ago — but now Saban and Urban Meyer might be running into each other in the halls of Glenville.

Jones just tweeted that he got off the phone w/ Saban. Maybe its just odd timing or perhaps coincidence that Saban seems to be making alot of contact w/ these kids while Urban is away at the Buckeye Cruise for Cancer. I think we are going to see Urban hit the recruiting trail pretty hard on his return.

Glenville kids traditionally use the recruiting time for visits anyway, so I'm no more concerned for Bama offering in February than I would be in November. I like our chances with the Ohio kids that we want.

Alabama has won 3 of the last 4 championships. They are a player for any prospect they offer, including Glenville kids.

Agreed. They are a very serious threat & not to be taken lightly...

I agree with you. At the same time, I don't see a realistic chance that we lose more than 1 of that 3 (Jones, Lattimore and Smith) if we genuinely want them -- which I do think staff does (especially Jones and Lattimore). Our success rate with getting commitments from Glenville players is just too high (something like 18 out of the 22-23ish we've offered over the last 11 years). And not to get political, but OSU has taken some marginal (mid-range 3*s) over the years just to keep that pipeline flowing and that relationship strong imo. You'd have to think the pressure is too strong for players at Glenville to commit to OSU for any more than 1 or so a year to go elsewhere--especially the high profile guys.

I agree in the sense that Alabama is appealing, and that pipelines aren't promised though, as Damon Webb could tell us. But Glenville is as close to a lock as you can get. I could see them stealing 1 of that 3, but no more than that. Just my humble opinion.

Jones is doing what Glenville does. Play off the recruitment to let the teamates get noticed, ala Erick Smith

This is all good for T OSU... Let the rest of the Country's elite recruits know that yes, we have plenty of talent in our area but we will search hard and far for the best...

Gene, theres an article Bill Greene did on Scout about a DT from SC named Poona Ford. Said hes coming up to FNL. Watched his tape on Hudl and this kid is very similar to Michael Hill very explosive off the ball. He's 6'1" 290 lbs and also play fullback (actually gets carries there) and they even split him out wide its really something to watch. Btw his name is awesome and I feel very bad for the kid who tried to take on his block at the goal line on the third play of the film. Greene said this is a kid to watch out for def SEC caliber after seeing that film.

Poona is his nickname. Kaylon Ford. He'll get at least 5 more offers within the next week. Bout to blow up. Wisconsin, Arkansas & Arizona seem to be close to offering him. He'll be playing in the Semper Fi All-American Bowl. Coaches really like his film.

Man Gene just when I think I got some new news you are already miles ahead lol! Be interested to get your take on this kid esp in comparison to Chris Williams the DT from GA. Greene did also say the head coach for Ford's team is an Ohio guy fwiw.

Yeah, BJ Payne is the head coach, he grew up in Massillon.

I honestly believe they are very similar, but Ford looks a little better on film. Williams and Ford both recorded 11 sacks in their junior year, but Ford got to the ball more, recording 154 tackles. Williams had about 78.
