Any chance that this is how we make room for Bell, Clark and Wilson? Maybe there isn't enough attrition coming? Just thoughts
Satan trying to pull a fast one on us, because we got Bell.
"You win with people." - Woody Hayes
We get Bell and he ends up with a punter. I'm ok with that
I can see it now... Johnny has to punt in the national championship because Alabama went 3 and out once again. On the other end? None other than Vonn Bell. He breaks through and its only him and Johnny in the open field. I think we all know how this ends ;) GO BUCKS
I know --- I was LOLing when I made the initial comment.
Trade ya Vonn Bell for a punter? ok, bros
"You win with people." - Woody Hayes
Amazing on the day we land Clark AND Bell that the surprise of the day might be that Ohio State loses a punter... This is truly Bizarro world.
Basically we kicked a$$, yet might miss out on our Punter. Gotta love recruiting drama.
See ya later. I refuse to give an ounce of worry over a Kicker. Not gonna happen.
I'd upvote if I could.
Jim Tressel, upon hearing the news the Buckeyes lost a punter to 'Bama:
Beat me to it...barely.
I liked the other picture better. lol

You mean this classic?
Both perfectly appropriate for the angst The Vest must be feeling awaiting Johnny T's announcement...
Not sure how reputable the two twitter sources are but there's really nothing to gain by putting that information out there about a punter, so I'm gonna go ahead and assume this has legs. It always good to have a solid punter but this team isn't going to be punting much. Besides, Frank E from last year's class was recruited as a WR but is a P also. The way things are looking (and not to degrade Frank's ability as a WR; he was damn good in the all star games last year), but he might see more significant playing time in the punting dept.
I believe technically if we would have kept jacobs and gotten everyone else that would be "oversigning." There's a possibility townsend puts us over that number. Someone else may be able to explain the numbers game better.
We would be oversigning, if we appear to be doing so it's because the staff know of current players who won't be on the team next fall. There's another thread that outlines this.
Something must be amiss since he is a punter and his fax has not come in yet......
Peace... If there's one position where this truly doesn't bother me, it's kicker. If "SEC Leg" was a concern, maybe. Urban will either snatch someone great or bank the scholly for next year. The man is a machine and knows exactly what he's doing, my faith in him at this point is absolute.
Upvote for "SEC Leg", which caused an SEC spit take on this end.
If he goes, good luck to him.Never get really high or low on a special teams player!!
SCOTTC.
He was upset after Dontre Wilson was offered.
Wilson was going to eliminate the amount of punts per game he gets, so he decided to look elsewhere
Don't give up... Don't ever give up.
Would like to keep him but I'm sure we have a servicable punter on the roster. Worst case scenario we bank his scholarship for next year. I'm not worried.
Here is his explanation.
"I've been committed to the Ohio State University for the past six months and my relationship with Coach (Urban) Meyer and the entire coaching staff and the commits is perfect, there's just been some recent developments in the recruiting process that have caused some second thoughts in my decision with my family. I'm just choosing to push the signing time back a little bit to give it further thought."
I feel like the recent developments is the signing of Smith, Clark and Wilson = no need for this offense to ever punt the ball.
my guess is Alabama actually came through with an offer, before it was just preferred walk-on status.
Perhaps we are making room for Vonn Bell. Works for me. Hopefully Epitropolus is a good punter.
Frank E, get your kicking gear ready!
The South will NOT rise again!
Chance that maybe his preferred walk on spot at Bama became a full ride? I can't see Urban changing a 6 month commit's scholarship to a Grey Shirt, but if he does I'll have to say I'd be pretty disappointed in him.
Sorry Urban, Woody is still my favorite
I hear what you're saying but who would you rather have, Townsend or Bell? Also, I thought that Frank E was a pretty good punter in high school!
BOTH
Definitely Bell. And yes while Townsend would be very helpful, should he go elsewhere Basil, Frank E, or a walk on should be sufficient. Can't be too much worse than last year right?
Sorry Urban, Woody is still my favorite
Saban will need a good punter when they play us next year.
what is the "recent development in the recruiting process?"
He realized, after looking at the offense that Urban and staff have put together, that his services would never be needed. Good choice by him to flip to Bama where he'll get plenty of chances to punt.
Time and change will surely show how firm they friendship... O-HI-O.
Tressel will shed a tear if this is true.
"YOLO" = I'm about to do something extremely ignorant/stupid & I need an excuse to do it.
A tear? I'm guessing he is in full convulsions by now.
Tres would be scrambling to find a long snapper to take Townshend's place
Did you mean to say a "holder"?
"It's just another case of there you are". ~ Doc (1918-2012)
Nope.
"Bryce Haynes is the first long snapper in memory to be signed to a scholarship by the Buckeyes right out of high school."
http://buckeyextra.dispatch.com/content/stories/2012/10/05/gameday/meet-...
And you know what? He was a beast on special teams this year. Not only did he do a good job with the long snap, he blew up several returns with his speed and tenacity. He was the best gunner we had this year.
i iike Bryce Haynes and he is an asset, but it is not typical to use a scholarship on a LS. Doubt it we see it under Urban.
And as good as Bryce is, who would you trade in this class for him? Is it worth a scholarship?
I seriously doubt Townsend got his scholarship pulled by OSU because of room.
Agreed, more likely that he received another offer that he didn't have (ie Bama).
Wow. Not that anyone cares about losing a punter but these guys are such drama queens.
I agree with Peyton Manning regarding kickers..
Wild conspiracy theory... He's good friends with Zeke and wants to see what happens with him first ??? Nah, that's just dumb.

This is not good.
"Right now it's a personal matter between the townsends and Ohio State and they are woking as fast as they can to make sure that any concerns they have is taken care of," Patterson said."They really want to hold off on a binding commitment until they feel 100 percent comfortable with everytihng from the University."
Ohio State gained somewhat of a surprise commitment from Dontre Wilson on Monday night. Wilson, a slot-reciever type out of DeSoto, Texas, flipped to the Buckeyes from Oregon on Monday and may have put Ohio State one scholarship over the edge.
That move could have caused the Buckeyes to pull Townsend's scholarship offer. Ohio State also received letters of acknowledgement of Buckeye intent today from New Smyrna Beach slot receiver James Clark and Rossville, Ga., safety Vonn Bell. The Buckeyes, however, do still stand at the legal limit of 25 scholarships, even with Townsend countin against the number
please don't pull the commitment...
Don't want to be Debbie Downer especially on a day like this where i'm estatic about how this class is finishing out, but saying Townsend is just a kicker isn't doing him justice. Even with the recruits we have on O if we're in a close game field position is going to matter. I was fortunate enough to see Townsend a few times this year and that boy can straight kill the ball. Complete gamechanger in that area of special teams, losing him wouldn't be a huge hit by any means but he is a pretty valuable member of this class and will likley be the first or one of the first to see the field out of these guys if he commits.
Even if we landed Elliott and Townsend we would only be at 83 I believe... There will be more attrition by fall camp.
Reading a lot on Twitter that his scholly may have been pulled. Don't think that is fair to the kid if it is the truth...
Certainly sounds like it. Or OSU changed his offer to preferred walk on status.
This, I think, is good news. Perhaps the family was concerned about the offer being pulled or had worries about a lack of attrition affecting Townsend's scholly down the road. Hopefully they get things smoothed out. If Urban's not worried, I'm not worried.
Obviously the whole story isn't out there, but - assuming the scholarship offer is as it currently appears - big ups to dad for making this vital point clear quickly.
Guys, are we sure that Townsend exist?
Are you saying we've all been catfished?

Was it really Ben Buchanan punting at the all- American game?
Leon Tressel perhaps?
Nothing like dancing on the field in 02...
Leon Sandcastle?
~Because we couldn't go for three~
dude is a PrimeTime player.
I heard he punts two balls at the same time!
He's worried about his scholarship being pulled, so he's possibly going to Alabama? Of all the places...
"YOLO" = I'm about to do something extremely ignorant/stupid & I need an excuse to do it.
I think we didnt have room for him,but UFM knows there are other players leaving hes just not allowed to say.So UFM had to give some reassurance there will be room.
I know that he was on for 4:00, then off for 4:00; I think this tweet suggests that the 4:00 time is on once again. Maybe.
Orlando Sentinel said that it was a "personal family matter" that cropped up. Usually when something like that pops up, at least in my experience, it indicates an unexpected issue within the faimly, like serious illness, divorce, bad stuff that wasn't originally on the horizon. Really hope that I am wrong, and that it is a simple flip, if it is a flip.
The quote from the Sentinel is "They really want to hold off on a binding commitment until they feel 100 percent comfortable with everything from the University." That doesn't sound like it's an issue within his family, but an issue with Ohio State. The only logical thing I can think of is that they offered him a Grayshirt Scholie.

that or a preferred walk on spot.
"We just have a family matter that has required extra consideration and he has not signed, but the status of his scholarship is the same."
Urban also said in his presser that OSU ahd not pulled a scholarship from any committed recruit.
It's after 4...

Someone on twitter said that Townsend's ceremony has been moved back again, no timeframe...

Oh for the love!!
I can't believe I am so frustrated by the announcment of a punter.... /sigh
Just shows how awesome today was outside of this.
I can't believe I am so frustrated by the announcment of a punter.... /sigh
Thats because we were conditioned to believe the punt was the most important play in football....just kidding and making light of the situation.

Hearing from sources close to Johnny Townsend the punter still has a full-ride scholarship offer on the table from OSU. *
Maybe we offered Leon Sandcastle last night as a punter.
Tom Skladany wants to upvote this.
"Success - it's what you do with what you got" - Woody Hayes
I do not think there is another school that he is deciding between. It is just up in the air if OSU will fit and the issue must be worked out first. The fact that Alabama is not dominating the rumors at the moment is a good thing.
I hope we get him, BUT
We don't need a punter.
We will not ever need to punt !
With the talent that we got at WR today, Frank Epitsomethingortheother should move to Punter.
Principal says it's personal matter between OSU and Townsend. Dad says it's a family matter. Who knows...
Funniest thing about this situation....If two days ago we would have been told we could have everyone we wanted/offered with the catch being we could not sign JT, we would have all hyperventilated getting the ok out of our throats too quickly. Now we're all puckered up over this? If this is our problem, I for one, will take it.
What else is there?
Today / this week has been a total sweep for Buckeye Nation with the one exception of losing Jacobs and really not that big of a deal with the adds we got.
I would have felt the same way. You commit to someone and they hold your spot. I don't care what last second surprises are thrown in. If this were my kid, then I would say that you knew for 6 months that my kid wanted to come here. The day he's supposed to sign you back out? Personally if there's not more to the story than this it causes me to lose a lot of respect for the coaching staff. That being said, its entirely possible that Townsend and OSU talked about this exact situation before today. I can only hope there's more to the story than this.
The only other school I see that offered him is Cincy. Did Bama actually offer this kid or has that all been speculation and hyperbole? I understand if you are a top player in the country and want to wait things out (i.e. TP) and then make your decision, but as a punter, I don't see your options being too splendid after NSD.
“You have to make decisions, ... I've never pretended that every decision I've made was right. And I've been reminded of that.”

i believe he was offered a preferred walk on position and not a full scholarship from Bama over the summer.
Still no word on Townsend....I'll keep you all posted
Is it possible that it will carry beyond today?
Thanks. Great work today.
"A guy from Ohio can make it in life if he works hard enough." - Wayne Woodrow Hayes
So we are at 82 scholly players with everyone signed... If it is true that Townsend's scholly was pulled due to numbers I really don't understand. We know there will be more attrition by the end of spring practice or before fall camp begins. It is hard for me to believe his scholly was pulled. His dad cited family issues being the reason for the delay.
Can definitely go beyond today
I hope things get straightened out, would hate to see Townsend not included in this class while being a commit the whole time, I say let him sign and things will sort out later.
He deserves his spot been committed for a long time would hate to see him lose out.
I take his dads word that the offer is in tact....family issue...he said it, why should I not believe him??
Dude I'm not trying to be mean, but dear god much time do you spend on twitter?
Sounds like he will be signing with Florida in the morning, bummer, sux when you can't find the room for the guy.
Damn it. I thought I would be able to get work done after NSD because I wouldn’t be frantically hitting F5.
This guy is not just a punter, he is a great punter. I want him in the class. Plus dude runs a 4.4 I imagine that at least once out of the 3 times we have to punt this year- Townsend pulls it down and picks up a first.
Also, it is conceivable that in the National Championship game we might be stopped a few times and field position will be important.
Florida? Sturgis is a JR and a top 5 punter.... No sense.
Rivals only shows offers from osu and cincy. This right?
He's a punter ... last time a team lost a national title to a punter or because of a punter? Please tell me ... I'm pretty sure we'll make due.
